Saw someone on fb talking about how the new trails were awesome! If I can find cheap flights I may make this ride. Really hoping to. If not it'll have to be Jan ride. I'm not flying in for Blk moose lol

definitely interested, and now that i have the new lift in i feel a little more confident about being off road.  I noticed the map has a lot of (what they call) beginner trails.  How does the difficulty increase from the beginner to the moderate?

I think i could throw the boys in the jeep and make a day of it.

It really just depends on the trail. But there are plenty at this park to get your feet wet and build some confidence.

Keep in mind ANY trail level of difficulty goes up if it is wet.
The bunny slopes are still passable though.

Night rides usually result in “less desirable results due to increased activity of certain substances” Stick to the day rides if you’re new.....

Never done a night ride at AOP. River Rock gets my vote as favorite for night rides. Much less mountain to roll off of and much more red necks for your spectating pleasure. Never done a night ride there without a spectacular break.

Will did you go on the night ride from hell in Harlan that one year. Turned into a multiple tree winch fest. Got back to the cabins at like 2 or 3 in the morning?

I vaguely remember that one. Was it the same trip that “Moon Shine” from West Virginia passed around all the free moonshine?

I'm yet in the market to buy the new rig but would be a pleasure to meet the people from this group and help someone riding alone.

Cheers.

HAHAHA maybe i will feel some confidence to get off the bunny slopes after i get a warm up trail under my belt.

I see there is a fee per person, will that fee be needed for my two young sons? No problem if it is just making sure before i get there.  Just like to plan ahead.

I Just got off the phone with Karen, i believe was her name, and she confirmed 12 and under are free

She also told me the new fee is 20 per person, and wanted me to let the admin know of the change.

Someone may need to call them for updates and new pricing media to add to the thread.

To be honest it was a mistake on our part.
We just copied and pasted from last years
AOP ride thread. Surprised nobody caught
that it originally said 2018 in the title.
Sorry for any inconvenience but I think the
price has probably been at $20 for a while.

Every GATR starts with a drivers meeting @ 9:00 am local time.
Their web page has changed. A lot of info at the beginning of this
thread has changed. Go to the web site for a map but there is no
sign of the waiver. When you check in at the gate they will take
care of everything.

My wife only goes to (future???) CFR & Jeep Fest. She used to go to Tellico almost every time.
A few years back we were watching a episode of Trucks & they were doing a shakedown run in their Cherokee at Harlan. She said she wanted to go. Maybe next October?

I am always early when i go places, just a pet peev of mine to be late, so when i say we will be there at 9 i will be ready for the mtg at 9  [spectator2]

I now have a question about my ability to ride on Saturday.
I have read through the other thread that says what i must have to ride with the GATR group, I do not have most of that stuff.  Should i cancel my plans to attend, even though i will be on the "bunny trails"?

No need to cancel. We'll figure it out. The more you ride, the more you learn and acquire what you need. We will put you between jeeps that have winches and ropes to pull you off things if needed. If anything I would say CB or hand held radio is really nice to have for communication purposes.

I have read through the other thread that says what i must have to ride with the GATR group, I do not have most of that stuff.  Should i cancel my plans to attend, even though i will be on the "bunny trails"?

I'll probably be on bunny trails with you. We basically break into 2 groups. The "Bunny Trail Group"  [slammin] and the "Fordy-Two's what did I break now?" group [rolleyes]. If enough people show up we'll have 3 groups.

You are never forced or cajoled into doing any trails you are not up to. There are often by passes and or you can back out. And if you need a spotter we are all, always willing to help.  We stop often enough that if you don't have a cb or race radio, we will direct you or you can follow someone.

The riding gear guide is a suggestion, Something to work towards.

I would have to disagree on the "no peer pressure " part.
I also need to thank Kevin for it.  That was the best day of wheeling.....EVER. It just so happened to be at AOP.

People will get you through, but I highly recommend you get a winch.

A winch (and a way to safely mount/attach it) should be the first purchase after getting a vehicle intended for off-road use...period.

There are 2 or 3 hotels very close to the park.

The Holiday Inn Express is not the cheapest, but it is clean and comfortable.  They also give AOP discounts if you call in rather than book online.

There is also a Hampton Inn and a Super 8

google hotels in Kimball, Tn

Thanks man. Found some options in the area you mentioned, what is only 9-10min of the park.
I would love to camp but I don't have any equipment yet here in the US.

Thanks for the congrats. I really appreciated it.

Please don't worry about being "rescued" or "winched", that's part of the fun and the learning process. And most of the times is better to be winched than insisting and breaking your Rig.
When I started in the off-roading 20y ago I lost good 2ys of nonsense insistence on some obstacles and breaking my jeeps, what really bothered others as it could be avoided accepting to use the winch after the 2nd or 3rd tentative... :-)
After this I turned on a total diff driver, I always accept guidance and will always avoid some risk of breaking my rig if we have the options available.

Cheers.

you won't bother anyone, everyone wheeling has been where you are, watching people spot, and learning is a big part of the fun.  what you see on the forms and hear with the stories are the highlights, we all enjoy each others company and are there to help anyone to learn and understand the sport.  remember, its YOUR rig, if your not comfortable,. dont do it.

I wish i could make this, i am going to try and make the Dec event , its more social but still fun.

Hey BigMike.

I bought it from Sean Vanderwall, a cop that lives in Thurmont, MD. He was a great guy during all buying process.

Well the D44's are trussed, gusset, Yukon 5.38 gears and Chromoly shafts, so I will start using it gently with the 39's, but I don't see it breaking easily. The driveshafts are OEM, what I expect to be the "fuse" of the system...

I'm planning to upgrade the shafts to RCVs in the future, as some friends in Brazil are using this same setup with 40's (Trepador) without problems...

Cheers.

to be fair , it isn't out of the question to run such a massive diameter but in the KM3.
If they're anything like the KO2 , the things are lighter than most.

yup, I checked.  the 39x13.50R17/C KM3 it looks like the guy has is sitting at around 88lbs per tire. A Nitto 37 D carcass is heavier than that , I'm pretty sure.
Now, those creeper BLs weigh a lot more , heh.

my point being , if judicious with that jk skinny pedal , our friend will prolly be ok. I'd still want rcvs and suitable housings if I was gonna sling that much wheel. I'd go w a 37 and lighten my wheel choice if staying on the built 44s.

I ran 39 red labels on the pr44 with RCV for a while. To be fair, a 39 red is really a 37" tire.  I was nervous a lot though, and took it very easy most of the time!

Hi Jeffery,
Thanks you did a very fair assessment of my Rubi's current setup, I fully agree.

The ex-owner built this setup and did only 2 difficult trails on 37's end of life w/ these Creeper BLs without problems. He decided to sell it and got a great deal on these 5x 39's KM3 and installed it to help the sell.

My plan is to return to the trails with a "gentle approach" and if I see some risk, I will use that thing some are reluctant: Winch!
My next year bonus in April is already "budgeted" for the RCVs, anyway I know it won't be risk free from breakages,
If I start to have problems after the RCVs, my plan is to reduce to the 37's w/ lighter wheels.

I handled without breakages for 3 years doing lots of difficult trails w/ my last TJ with D30/D35 trussed, gusseted, G2 shafts, 4.56 G2 and 35's Creepy Crawler and BLs, so I learned to push that skinny pedal only when strictly needed. :-)

The guy that currently owns the TJ is much less gentle (and maybe luckier!) as the TJ stills there surviving without breakages...I almost had a heart attack with some videos he sent me. hahahaha

Cheers.

those radial Treps can be at 15psi & barely bulge. Biggest gripe I've read is their stiff carcass.

now, I'm thinking a wee bit of spotting coulda prevented that layover...

I'm in Saturday and Sunday camping.

I'll probably be on the bunny slopes with my driving problems.

Shouldn't be as many rattlesnakes as cold as it's getting. They may come out to sun on the rocks though.

Hi Guys,
I'm not sure I will be free from work on Friday. Are you planning something after the trail on Friday? Fire w/ barbecue? Dinner at some restaurant near AOP?

Just wondering with worth going on Friday evening after work to meet you there, or only going on Saturday early morning.

Cheers.

Typically everyone is on their own for dinner but we do a campfire. Speaking of, if anyone has firewood I'll gladly chip in

I’ll have a campfire going. I had planned on calling local guy that delivers there.  Good amount of wood for $20 or $30

I'm thinking on buying a cheap foldable carchoal grill and some special Brazilian cut (Picanha) to do a typical Brazilian Barbecue.

Would need to know how many people on Friday to calculate the amount of meat.

Who is in?

I'll pitch in $20 for some firewood!

I would be in for some of that BBQ as well. There's 3 of us. I can pitch in $ also, just let me know. So, is Brazilian BBQ the same as from Argentina? We had some friends in Miami from Argentina and the food was amazing.

It's similar but not the same.
We use a cut that is not very valuable in the US or Argentina, named Picanha, what is very smooth and juicy.

Also on a typical Brazilian Barbecue we do on the grill:
- A salty sausage of porch named "Linguiça Toscana"
- Garlic Bread
- Chicken's hearts
- A brazilian cheese named "Coalho"

I found already Picanha, Sausage Toscana and Chicken's heart in Marietta, the cheese Coalho is very expensive here so some friends bring it from Brazil when they come (I have some at home).

The Garlic bread is a Brazilian bread that I buy on a Brazilian Bakery and I do the garlic paste.

Enjoy some pics of some recent ones...

@Carlos LOBO  you'll fit right in sir. This is definitely a Eating Club with a wheeling problem. Last time I had some Brazilian BBQ it was cooked vertically on a spit around a big camp fire for about 4 hours.

I wasn't planning on coming up Friday night...I may need to rethink that.

I feel like home! :-)

This Brazilian BBW cooked vertically is very typical of the south of Brazil, I know how to do it, but it is not so "practical", the grill is much quicker! :-)

Well, a typical Brazilian BBQ we usually don't cook all the meat together, stop, do a plate and it's done. We keep grilling and snacking for 1-2 hours (or more, and of course talking how our wives are great and our jeeps are bad), so sides are really optional for those who like to do a dinner plate, sit and eat... :-)

Bring some bananas and Vanilla Ice cream, it's a typical desert we do on the grill too (of course only the bananas go on the grill...) :-)

I will bring with me my BBQ kit (knife, fork, cutting board, charcoal, some paper plates and plastic forks/spoons/knives)

Yes, not finding it on the new website.  I had previously contaced the Hotel and they said they still had the discount.  They couldn't give a code said it needed to be done through the AOP link.  I guess contact the park.  The rate was previously $85.

I don't know about AOP having them, but I think the answer is NO.

I'll find a grill to bring, likely charcoal.  I'm planning to arrive mid-afternoon and take a couple of conf calls from the truck...so I will have it there in time for dinner.

Right there with you, but I don’t have a heater buddy.  At least we can build a fire this time, unlike a Gulches a few years ago when where 10 of us were under a pop up canopy with tarps on the side and a heater buddy in the middle

At least try one, I did some BBQs at home for some neighbors and they are now new fans of grilled Picanha, cheese Coalho, and Chicken hearts (after several ugly faces when I said "chicken hearts")... :-)
I prepare it before with garlic, salt and little of pepper, and some mayonnaise / garlic when grilling to avoid getting dry.

Count me in!  Planning to be there before noon tomorrow, but probably not by 9.  I'm going to camp.  I know it's late notice for the BBQ, but I'm in if it's not too late.  What can I bring?

Packing lots of blankets and my heater buddy and my thermals and gloves and an extra hat and, and...  cuz BRRRRRR.

Not too late, I will buy everything late evening today or tomorrow morning.

Guys, can you please confirm the number of people is correct?

Friday's evening BBQ updated list:

@Carlos LOBO x1
@Trailabite   x3
@TravisMac  x1
@clark123456 x1
@kvom x1
@Cannonballkev x1
@RedDragonATL  x1

Total: 9 people

Trailabite confirmed - I'm in for some hearts.......maybe......as long as I don't think about it......

Hi Guys,

Changing the subject to the Trail Bag List, I really like to go to trails very well prepared but I just bought this jeep last weekend and I'm in a busy week at work, so I will not have the time to have all the complete set of tools, things and spare parts as I was used before in Brazil. Also, I would like to buy it calmy.

I will go with a rescue kit of 4x D-rings, 2 recovery straps, 1 tree saver, Gloves, Snatch Block. I tested my winch and it is OK, the remote control is inside the car w/ battery. I will also put in a small bag some tools I have at home, and will bring the 2 OEM driveshafts the ex-owner gave me.

I would like to know if it is an issue, or I can follow someone well equipped with tools, so if something happens I can count on using it.

Nothing wrong with being prepared! But, there will be plenty of tools, hands, beer, advice if and when needed.

Shame on you "chickenhearted" guys.

In Brazil, I was famous in the Jeep club for being the guy almost bringing a complete repair shop inside my jeep, 90% never was used, but was there just in case. :-)

When I sold my ex-TJ, I gave as a gift a big box full of spare parts to the new owner, the guy smiled from ear to ear...

Tools should not be a problem.
The beer, well, that's another story.

I broke my front DS at AOP once. Marc and Ben had it disconnected and in my hands before I could find a wrench. And I believe @Danny Kinder  had one on order before I left to drive home. This club never leaves a down'ed wheeler. Ever. We just want people to be prepared. You seem well prepared.

Hi Guys.

I'm at the Austell Tag Office and I will need to do the emissions to get a new tag for the jeep. Do you think I can have some problems because the lift and tires not totally covered by the fenders?

The ex-owner told me that maybe here would be crazy like there, that he needed to use the OEM wheels and tires to get it approved.

I was really hoping to make it today as a last minute decision, but it’s just not going to happen. Really wish I could be there. Maybe next year will be a better year of wheeling for me. Y’all have fun, be safe, and post plenty of picks for us couch wheelers. (On a happier note, the house should be on the market within the next couple of weeks)

graçias, mi amigo!

I have a question on this. When all of this came about I was under the impression that the GATR 1 thu 10 were the same frequencies as GMRS 1 thru 10, but when I put my radio on GMRS 13 I was not able to connect with anyone. I had to enter the frequency in manually and it worked, but the frequency for GATR 13 matches GMRS 3. So is there a chart showing what the frequencies are for the GATR channels or am I all wet here?

And no @TravisMac this is not a BOOMER moment!

Dang it Boomer!  Brand new sticky too!
