Title: Staying in Shape 2012/2013
Post by: BigJerm on January 01, 2012, 07:03:42 PM
Just noticed its that time!

To respond to the previous thread about snacks, eating late at night...

Well in that case snacks need to go period. Anyone who seriously workouts will tell you the kitchen is first, not the gym. Eat like crap and no matter how much you workout you will not look like it. Watching you calories, carbs, protein and fats is a big step. I suggest making a spread sheet of meals and find a website (like Bodybuilding.com) to look up each food values. They also have several calculators for an approx amount of each that you should consume daily to meet your desired goals. Approx as is no 2 people are the same so you might need more or less, maybe you cant eat at night, maybe breakfast makes you sick, so you have to learn what works for YOU and use it.

For me currently my meals are scheduled and I cook and prepare them daily. The only meal I don't plan is dinner because there are to many options to plan for. So pre dinner my intake looks like (no supplements): 130.45g of protein, 145.35 carbs, 24.42g fats and 1984.5 calories for male 25 yrs old, 245 lbs, semi active job. Dinner always has the 3 main, a protein source, carb and veggies. Being someone who is in the weight room to gain muscle I would love to up all these figures but healthy food cost $ and so does supplements. Eventually I will add some shakes into the diet as well.

Occasionally I take breaks from this. Today I have not had anything of the normal meals. I learned after last time I got serious I quickly got burned out on the food and the burned out feeling followed me to the gym and I fell off the wagon. I wouldn't say its a cheat day, I am not eating a bunch of crap, just different.

Thanks Jeremy, yep, 2012 already, time to start... tomorrow... lol.

Going low carbs 1st to drop 20 badly needed as fast as I can, to get a little weight off my knees,
then to a low calorie plan, about 1500 max, with tracking at myfitnesspal.com.

Maybe sit in the sauna before or after work a few days a week. Ill do cardio and sauna twice a week and weights twice a week. I like to go after work, it helps me unwind so I don't think about work all night!!

Golds gym Hamilton Mill I pay  $21.00 a month

To anyone reading... put in the research. There are just as many workout and fitness sites as there are Jeep sites. We all sit around and research parts and projects all day, do the same with this.

I am getting back on the bike today! As for food, eat more meals throughout the day and get the metabolism pumping. I eat bfast, mid morning snack, lunch, mid afternoon snack and then dinner. If you do not keep the "fire" burning, you will not loose weight. I use my fitness pal to keep up with calories. Find out what you need in a day, then figure the food out. Build muscle and stay lean, protein. If you want to gain muscle you need atleast your body weight in protein a day. Cardio sucks but can be fun if you enjoy certain sports. I love my MTB days and it burns serious calories. In 1 1/2 hours I am burning 1000+ calories. So try different things and find what you like to do and stick with it! It takes time to see results and you will be in pain for awhile too. {cheers2}

I only gained 1.5 lbs over the Christmas/New Years Holidays. Was back in the gym killiing the weights and hammering the cardio. Got some jui-jitsu to do tonight.

Thinking about doing another comp in March.

Hard Work Pays Off.

No carbs for 2 days now.  Low calorie intake as well.  Already dropping.  I saw the most I've ever seen on a scale with me on it prior to New Years Eve.  Much more and I'd need a mirror to see the scale, lol.

Just be careful with no/low carb diets. People seem to forget the body needs a basic amount of calories, carbs, protein, sodium, sugars and others to properly function. Cutting down is great, but dont cut out. Sure you can use fat stores some but your body still needs a basic amount. You can survive 3 weeks without food but you wont be doing very good at the end.

Unlike most of you guys...im doing the complete opposite. Im trying to gain weight. I was diagnosed with crohns disease about 7 years ago and I have had a really hard time with weight. I was holding steady through college at 130.  After I graduated and started working I started to feel sick. I didnt say anything to anyone until the end of Nov 2011. Long story short I went to an emergency clinic, and then a follow up with my gastro dr. the day after. I have been on antibiotics and prednisone for about a month now. I had my third colonoscopy since i was diagnosed and the dr said that my colon looked terrible. I dropped about 12lbs in about a week and half. I have since been doing better, but my weight is taking some time to recover. I have started back doing p90x as of Jan 2nd. My goal is to get to 140lbs by the end.

12!!  </ROCKIN/> I rode yesterday and it was freakin cold! I had a short ride thanks to early sunset and have to keep up with how long it takes to get back to the parking lot. Hate to get stuck in complete dark at the far end of the park. I forgot how much MTB'ing works the upper body as well. Shoulders, arms, chest. Sore. Butt is too ;D

Reading about everybody else working out and losing weight or pack on some muscle has me ready to get after it again today.

292.

Shooting for 220 daily or walking around weight by feb 13th and then I am done with the dropping weight unless a jui-jitsu comp has a weird weight break between weight classes. Most are light heavy(194-207.9), super heavy(208-220.9), ultra heavy(211+).

Wow.  Already lost almost 20% of your body weight.  I imagine you feel like you really are at your fighting weight as the saying goes.  You keeping all your old clothes for me as I go down lol?

I hit 322.  :o

Now 306 in 5 days.  Long way to go!

That is awesome. Keep it up. The more you loose the better you will feel.

Take your measurements! I plateaued on the scales a couple of times and the only thing that kept me going was the fact that the inches was still coming off.
bodybuilding.com has setup on where and how to take your measurements for consistency.

Sorry to hear about your crohns...my ex-wife suffered from it and had great success by taking red meat, pork and chicken completely out of her diet.  So basically vegetarian plus fish(and shellfish).  This worked extremely well for her and may be something you want to look in to.  It probably would not be helpful to your quest to gain weight but I know that getting crohns under control is extremely important.

Best of luck.

Saw  you got a good ride in on FB the other day  </BEER/>

I stare at my mountain bike hanging on the wall every morning when I back out to go to work. Cant wait to get back on it but I need warm weather. Still hitting the weights strong here.

Just remember those on a "diet". A diet is defined as what you eat, not a health kick. If you don't make a lifestyle change for the better, that fad diet you are doing wont help you once you go back to normal eating.

Hoping to get a good 10-12 miles in today on the bike. Feels good to get back into it. Finally feeling my legs again and stamina is recovering. 1st few rides the 8 mile mark was it and I was shot. Now I am getting back in the groove and peddling into things harder. Amazing how fast all of it goes when you are not using it. Sucks. I could blaze around the 12 mile loop in just over an hour without stopping. Now it is 1 1/2 hours for 10 miles and 1-2 stops. But it won't take too many more rides to get back. Keep it up guys! Remember, beach season is just over 5 months or so! //RUNNIN//

Completely doable Chuck! My main advice is diet/ eating habits. Like Jerm stated in this thread before, you can bust yo A all day in the gym, on the bike, etc, but if you eat crappy, you get crappy results. I love my bad food too much to kill it all from my "diet" so I eat clean mon-fri and eat about what I want on the weekends. Not in excess but I cheat ;D Once I get the bike part of me in tip top shape, I will hit the X again and then progress back into the weights. I just have no desire to lift anymore. I have become a bike nut/ X fan. I hate the gym personally.

I did the whole body building thing in my early 20's. Worked and trained people at golds gym in lawrenceville. Had 2-3 clients a day, worked from 5am till 12, then trained for 2 hours, then took a nap at my girls house, then went to one of my other two Jobs. I tried to get 2 workouts in a day if i could. Ate like a freak, protein, pills, roids. I was a big boy back in the day. I need to scan my old college id and post it. My neck was 2 xs as big. Heaviest point was 235, ripped. I was 8% body fat at best time and almost got into a competition but did not want to. So yeah, weights are great but i always see the old me in them and i know those days cannever be again. Too much work, time, food, energy, etc. I am now 195 and was down to 185 in the summer and was in great shape. Probably 10-12% fat. Trying to get back there. Us tall guys are at a disadvantage when itcomes to muscle mass :( chuck, riding tgat 2 wheeled beast is a complete blast and i truly enjoy it. When you look forward to actually excersising, it means you are doin somethin right. The X is a bad A tool as well and i highly suggedt anyone to try it. It will beat you and build you fast. I still enjoy the weights but not looking to be a big ol beefy guy. Will get back on the MTB soon hopefully. It is the most fun I have had while working out. Ben I am the same way... mon-fri my diet is strict and clean. Saturday and Sunday is like half... I start out with good breakfast and my little meals but the evening is out with friends. Don't go crazy, but its not my normal meal. Still working on my diet but on workout days pre-dinner my split is

Protein: 201g
Carbs: 130.5
Fats: 134
Calories: 2,560

I hate hitting plateau's! It doesn't matter what I do but every time I hit 215 to 220 pounds it seems like everything just stops. I've done this like four times now. It's almost like my body that's enough and you ain't getting no more. Hopefully, I get through it this time though, I'm going to get some testing done that supposedly will let me know the exact zones that I should be working out in to burn the most fat. Apparently, when I work out I'm actually burning sugar and actual muscle and the fat is staying in it's storage bins. I don't know how much of a difference all that really makes but I'm willing to give it a try.

Chuck, cardio is the key to dropping fat. You start to burn fat at around 30 minutes in. An hour is the minimum to get anything really out of it. Yes, you will burn calories, but the heart rate has to stay up and keep at it. When I trained women, I would incorporate weight lifting and cardio with doing a set of weights, then a set of stair steps in between. The client never came down on the heart rate. Cardio sucks and is not fun in a gym so find other ways to do it. Snow shoveling? ;D

It hasn't snowed yet. They normally have about 14 to 18 inches on the ground by now. It's coming, until then I'm in the gym. I went to Dicks Sporting Good and found a Timex Ironman Road Trainer monitor, which normally sells for $109. I got it for $50. We'll see how it works tomorrow.

Get a good pair of running shoes and have a pair of custom orthotics made. That will help out a lot with knee and back pain. You can get orthotics made at and Podiatrist office. Also adjust your running style. Chances are your form is off slightly, causing the pain. Try doing some non impact cardio for a while to let it heal. Swimming is by far the best cardio you can do that is non-impact.

Incorrect sir. I worked at a podiatrist for a few years (My girlfriends dad is one). It is actually terrible for your feet UNLESS you have the perfect arches! I would not recommend anyone doing or wearing the five finger type shoes unless you have had your feet evaluated first. Running barefoot is fine if you are running on soft sand.

When I worked in his office the five fingers had just come out and we had people coming in a lot complaining of back and knee pain from running in those shoes.

I've worked out between 4 and 6 times a week for as long as I can remember.  Some times the intensity dies out but I keep up with it.  I was still carrying around and extra 10-12 lbs from not eating right and drinking too much.

My wife booked a vacation trip to Playa del Carmen for 1/1/12 to 1/8/12.  I cranked up the intensity on the workouts, didn't skip my cardio workouts, and ate clean over since the end of October.  I lost 12 lbs before we left.  We had a great time and we worked out almost every morning before going to the beach/pool each day.  We ate and a drank what we wanted and my wife was shocked when I got on the scale at the fitness center on the 5th day.  I was only up 1lb.

I've kept it off and plan to drop another 5 to 7 lbs. before the end of March.  It's all about shutting the pie hole.  Don't each anything with refined sugar and stay away from high glycemic carbs.

This is our last night in Playa del Carmen well on our way to be over-served with some friends.  I'm all the way on the right and my wife is all the way on the left.

Holding steady in the 231/234 range. I took 5 days off from jui-jitsu to try and heal up some injuries and took some of those days off form cardio and weights too.
Might make a push to see 229 by this Saturday.

My lifting is going up slowly but that is fine my me. Up is better than down and I only lift 3 days a week. Cardio is still 5 days a week but I am hating the elliptical and been hitting the adaptive motion trainer.

Have not measured any thing since the 1st week of janurary might be time to do it again.

Better save some cash for that. Damn Yargo is implementing a $2 ride fee in addition to the $5 parking fee WTF So alot of guys are bailing. But the group that built the trails made another access point off the park to get to the trails ;D So you can avoid the fee. Damn dumb idea! I will not pay $2 to ride everytime. :fu(

Jeremy, I started my cardio routine, by jogging or doing the elliptical for 15 minuets before I do weights. It helps get my heart rate up and get your energy going before you start weights.
Now I try and add an additional 15-30 min. of running after my workout, if time permits!!

Title: Re: Staying in Shape 2012

Yes. But it only gets you in the park. So I always buy a year pass at $56.00 >:( and it pays for the parking at any state park. But the $2 ride fee is BS! The park itself has nothing to do with the trails on it. They are maintained by YABA. The fee is just a way to make $. If the park service, yargo employees maintained it, built it etc. I would be better with the fee. But it is horse crap.

Right now I am spending every bit of calories just on the weights and muscle development. I am only slightly over weight and in somewhat decent cardio shape. I set my goal of 2 months of solid weight lifting and a great diet of just weights and then I will start to bring in cardio to burn the fat. No point in cutting if you have nothing to show!

This is week 10 of my 14 week program. I have been hitting the gym at 5:30 am every morning except on Sundays. Weight training on Tue, Thur and Sat and cardio on the other three days. Each day consisting of a 1 hour work out. We actually cleaned out our cabinet and have gone totally organic with our foods and have been following the Paleo diet program. So far, this has been the best program (workout/diet combination) that I have ever done.

My wife has always had issues with her digestive system, IBS, lactose intolerant, Gluten issues and something else that causes the lining of her stomach to be irritated (something to do with the pylori bacteria). She has been fighting this crap (literally) for years and it was getting worse in the last few years. Well, after about 30 days of eating on the paleo diet and the organic food she has been almost symptom free. So for now, Sherry is a happy very happy girl.

So far I have lost 16 pounds. About 3 weeks (7 week mark) ago I was tested and according to the results I lost 10 pounds of actual fat and gained 2 pounds in muscle. We get tested again on March 31 and I'm hoping to be twice that.

Still holding at 232. I am happy as long as I stay under 235.

Been catching 1 day a week on the mtn bike on the road for an easy 6-7 miles.
Still hammering the cardio 5 days a week, weights 3 days and jui-jitsu 5-6 days.
Got a tournament coming up on April 21st.

Where is everybody else at for 2012?

Still hitting the gym every  morning except for Sunday. Down 22 pounds. Still have another 17 to hit 200 and then re-access, but given what I'm seeing right now I will probably go down another 15 pounds after that to 185. Total weight loss would 54 pounds lost in 2012. When I started in 2009 I was at 261 pounds so if I can get down to 185 that will be 76 pounds lost all together.

My eating too much is killing. My goal is back to 160~163 but currently at 175. I'm sure everyone is cussing me at wanting to loose from 175 but it needs to go. Eating sweets and when I come home from work at 3am is killing me. I work pretty hard in the gym but freaking eat. I have lost some weight.

I ran my first actual 5k last week and got third in my age division with a metal (woot woot). I started in the middle of the pack with co workers but should have been in the front. I ran 21:25 time but had to pass 100 freaking people in order to get my crusing speed. Would have maid a :30 to 1:00 difference had i been in the front. I can run a 19:13 on the treadmill for 3 miles. The 5k had some hills in it.

The working out seems to have given me a guilty feeling when I eat bad. Not to say I don't, I just eat less of the bad stuff. My working out schedule has been a little off lately due to the at home life and jumping couches with friends but I am still holding around 240.

I eat anything and the older I get, the more I see it creepin in. Had a physical last week for the adoption and I was perfect on everything. Cholesterol was 149! Once soccer is over and my wifes semester is over, IT'S FREAKIN BIKE TIME!!! 3-4 days a week again and X on days off the bike. Not looking to loose weight, just tone and grow a bit. Gotta keep up with these young guys! ;D

Appreciate it. I get bored and eat usually not hungry. Im working on snacking less but I choose a healthier snack option. I'm buying sugar free jello and putting fruit in it. Buying the non heavy syrup fruit. Low cal and in sugar but I get something a little sweet. Sweets kill me.

Good deal!

I'm still going to the gym 6 days week. Tue, Thur and Sat we do weight training then on Mon, Wed and Fri do 45 min to 1 hour on the treadmill. I have about 14 pounds to go to get to 200, which I haven't seen that weight for about 20 years lol. Just started another 12 week program at the club so I'm hoping to lose another 22 pounds.

I still need to lean out and that comes when i stop putting my right hand toward my face. Going to the gym is not a problem but I do need to pick up the cardio. 1 to 2 miles a day is not cutting it.

I have ran 3 5k events and finished in the top 20 of them all. They gave me these cool guy metals for finishing in the top 3 of my age group. All three runs have been with hills so I'm a mid 21 to 22:00.

I never really care for dead lifts or clings and it shows. My dead lift is only 325 and cling is around 185 for weighing 168~. Wanna wack off about 10 pounds.

Summer is getting here and there is more to do outside so no one slack off and keep at your goals.

Crossfit looks fun, and for someone like me who gets bored quickly with the weight room it would be great but not for $200+ a month for us both to go...

just go to www.crossfit.com and that is the main site. It is free to use. There are vids of how to do certain excersies on there. Just about everything can be done at the gym and if you just buy a few things and get creative, everything can be done at the house. Be cheaper than a gym membership.

I wouldn't mind going to a crossfit gym but I don't wanna pay there prices. I can kick my butt better then them anyways. I wanna just use there toys and don't care about the classes. It's all classes with them and I wanna do my own thing which is better anyways....well harder.

Do the main site or you want something that is a little more fun then check out www.sealfit.com. That rocks my butt about 6 days a week. I worked my way up to a 130lb power snatch today. With seal fit you will see greater imporvments vs main site but you will pay for it. The first few months will be torture and it never gets easy and if it does you are just slacking. On seal fit just like the main site the workouts are not posted in advance and they are never the same. They come up with creative ways to kill you.

With seal fit everything has improved for me: run times, clings, dead lifts, presses, snatches, and so on. Haven't seen much in pull up and bench only because I could already do 20 overhand pulls and was great for my body weight on bench.

Sadly there are quite a few here who are the same way. They probably couldnt pass the obstacle course now even though they had to when hired. The inmates workout, all day, pushups, pullups, dips, they find ways to make weighted objects to lift. If you don't stay in shape then your asking for a problem.

I had to take all last week off from everything because of the optometrist having to remove the loose skin off my eyeball. Things got interesting when he brought out a mini dremel type tool to smooth the edges on my eyeball.

My diet is back under control and my weight is slowly going back in the right direction. I need to get to 225. Seems like this is the hardest 10lbs to drop.

Need some help!  :hlp

My elbow is killing me!!! The muscle running from my outer wrist up to my right elbow hurts every time I lift or pull something (doesn't matter how much weight). Also my elbow joint itself hurts when I'm lifting weights. I was told it could be tennis elbow (from doing the row machine) but it seems like to much pain for tennis elbow. This has been going on for about 45 days. I just don't want to have to stop going to the gym to repair the joint.  Any help would be great.

If it's tendonitis you might try wrapping an ace bandage around your forearm and elbow with a couple of ice packs underneath for about 20 or so minutes and then rub some icy hot on the area and wrap it back up with the ace bandage. The cold will help reduce the inflammation in the tendons and the heat will help with the blood flow in the area. Also take 400 mg of Ibuprofen for reducing inflammation.

I had tendonitis in my shoulder, which is kind of hard to wrap up in a bandage so the Dr. had me take a Styrofoam cup, fill it with water and stick it in the freezer until it was nice and frozen. The Styrofoam provides insulation so that you hold it and massage the area that's needed to be iced down. As the ice melts you just peel the Styrofoam down to more ice and keep going. The area needs to be iced down long enough where the skin becomes numb.

Or go see a Dr. and get some pain killers for it.

Man, tennis elbow can be bad!  Either way, you've aggravted something, and it's not getting enough time to heal.

Only cure is to rest it COMPLETELY.  Put it in a sling for 10 days, and it will be great until you aggravate it again.

This sounds like some good advice. I was reading up on it last night and people were saying the same thing. I've been wearing a elbow support for about two weeks & no results. Ice packs tonight!! Thanks Jeremy

Today I got 385 on dead lift. Not bad for weighing 170 or right there at it. Need to check. I'll be happy when I can hit the 400 mark and on.

Ealier in the week I maxed in strict press at 170.

Gaining strength nicely and loosing weight. I haven't taken any supplements or protein powder in the last couple of months.

3 weeks to the day with a pulled groin muscle.  Can't jog any faster than a 10 minute mile, was doing 7:30s. Going back to jiujitsu tonight and going to workout with as much caution as possible.

Leg day tomorrow morning going to be lifting at 10% of normal weight and working my way up slowly.

I am down in 220's now according to my scale. I moved it around the house to make sure it was reading right on a level floor...lol. I did finally start working out again (at home) and my back doesn't hurt much anymore. Today my Colonel told me to go get new uniform pants because mine look like clown pants now.

Larry, careful with that muscle... it can last a while if not properly rested and healed.

Ben, I keep saying ill put the bike rack back on now that I have a spare tire carrier... still have not done it.

The bike is where it's at for me. I burn 1000-1500 calories every ride. Hard to beat that in an hour and a half!

Take it slow Larry. Back when I was still playing baseball, about 8 years ago, I pulled my groin and I never really let it fully heal. Took me a year to get right.

A little to much for $$$ to run a race for my blood. I like the warrior dash because it is half the price.

Well my weight had went up to 250 since I was hurt. Been easing back into everything. After 3 weeks of a good diet I am back down to 240 and should keep dropping. Going to try and ride this all the way down to 225 or less.
Still nowhere close to my groin being healed but I am able to do a little more each week. Probably going to be end of December before I am 100%.

How is everybody else holding up?

Wow..this thread is totally awesome..read BigJerm's post and he was talking macros and such and I knew this thread was for me. I read thru it all!..I think it's great to see so many people interested in losing weight and getting healthy! and some gaining weight! Big muscles!! Also, great to have the support of family and friends. A big thanks to my hubby(mrmike) and my 2 great sons who all push me to keep going.
I learned the macro talk from bodybuidling.com and it really helped to get my diet in check..When I say diet, I'm not referring to the restriction of calories. That's what I used to think when I heard that dirty 4 letter word. Now I realize diet is what you eat, what you feed your body to get thru the day and giving your body the right combination of protein, carbs, and fat. My diet is high in protein, approx 130 to 140 gr per day, fat 35 to 40 gr, and carbs 70 to 75gr. I'm 44 years old and have lost 110 pounds according to the scale, but I have also gained muscle so I believe I have lost more fat pounds, just the scale doesn't tell me that. I have been maintaining at about 170-175 for the last 6 months or so and really want to get back to losing..Just needed a break and well with GATRFEST this weekend, ummm guess Monday is a good day to get started..lol
Come'on guys...how are you all doing on your journeys? having setbacks, progressing as planned, need a new workout???

Welcome to the thread. it has died off but seems everyone is still doing well. I workout when i can, usually body weight. I watch my food Mon-Fri, take it easy Friday night and Saturday (without going crazy) and sunday i bring it back down some. Seems to work for me. I dont really track and measure my food anymore. I lost the weight and not in the weight room right now so it isnt as needed right now.

That's great that you achieved your goal..I kinda figured with it being holiday season, losing weight is the last thing on people's minds. I don't really need to track daily at this point, as I know what combinations of food I need to eat. It's when I hit that sticking point, I start tracking again and usually find that I have been going over, usually tidbit snacking or even just food tasting when cooking.

I am still holding at 240 and looking to drop 5-10 lbs over the next 2 weeks. I have almost got my full routine going again, Cardio at lunch 5 days, Weights 3 days, Jiu-jitsu/Judo 5 days a week.
Diet has been great Monday-Friday but real bad on Saturday/Sunday. That changes this weekend.

I have gotten lazy by my standards for the last two months. Lifting a little but no motivation to run. Only running 1 - 1.5 miles around 630 pace on the mill. Pace is fine but distance is too short. Still needing to lean out but tasty food.

Just work hard and kept at it. You will reach your goal in no time.

I've gotten lazy myself. I'm getting back into it somewhat. Typically I road bike but I haven't touched the road, mountain, or around town bike in a while. Now that it is getting cold I know that'll taper off.

I'm thinking of taking up spin class and weight lifting again over the winter. The biggest issue is everyone who I used to do that with has crapped out on me. Hard to get motivated by myself.

Starting to see the results I want again.
Weight is under control and headed down.
Lifting and cardio are back on track.
Eating habits have cleaned up alot. I still got a way to go on this one.
Rolled over 10 6 minute matchs on the mat Saturday and plenty of gas in the tank afterwards.

Everyone still working out as they attend all of the X-mas parties.

I hurt my back a little over a month ago and I think I am finally good to go. From do a little reading I think I had a slip disk in my lower back. The cure is just time with some pain meds. I had a DR. appointment but after reading that I decided to save my money since I was pretty sure that's what happened. I hurt it doing back squats so I am still holding off on those but able to do front. No DL either.

A good bench (like you already have) and a nice dumbbell set are the two best things to have at home. A nice kettle bell set is good for core workouts

Take that $400 and put it towards a mountain bike and ride 2-3 times a week. When I rode a lot I was in really good shape. At home it was just simple workouts. 2013 I plan to get back to it hard now that I have a truck (didnt have a bike rack for the wrangler)

I did legs Monday and I'm still crying because I hurt.

Kettle bells are awesome different types of lift can be done. Summo dead lift, snatches, kb swings, and on. Great cardio and strength types of lift. Cheap and great workout item to add to your home work out is a medicine ball.....do some wall balls.

For 400 you could be set up. Olympic bar with weights, kb's, medicine ball, jump rope, rubber mat with rattle can for dot drills, buy some steel so someone can fab up a squat rack/pull up bar and your in at about 400.

Wendy and I started Crossfit at a nearby gym.  Many people have advised its a good program, including some members here.  I've seen the results on other people who stick with it.  Working out at home just doesn't cut it, I quit out too soon.

I can barely lift my arm enough to scratch my head right now though.

Late rides but the park does not close till 10  //SLAMIN// Should be rakin about 60 miles a week and burning roughly 900 or so calories a ride. Been doing my push up regiment and curls in the am and need to pull out the P90X dvds again as well. Beach in a few months!

ugg....Had a lipids test. My good cholesterol is too low, my triglycerides & cholesterol are too high. I was told to cut out the beer, get off my butt & eat less sweets  //:'(//

Guess age & genes are finally catching up with me at 32. Everyone was fairly shocked at my results because I'm pretty thin. I'm just out of shape & have a strong weakness for beer, cake, Ice Cream & marbled red meat.

The regular workout started this week, along with a better diet. So far so good, just been hungry...

Have had similar issues, different people have different genetics.  For me hard exercise works, the easy jog or turning the wheel on the exercise bike or elliptical doesn't....  I actually found that diet had less effect than exercise, as hard exercise forces your body to process your intake of calories very differently.  Basically your lipid profile is showing that you are storing unused calories as blood fats which aren't being required by your body to do its job.  Cut the sweets, sugars, any low quality fast burn carbs....

My TG was at 260, my HDL was 33, Total Chol was at 5.5. Since my son came, I've been in a terrible routine of Going to work (sitting all day), coming home & other than playing with my son, I've been sitting around watching tv, drinking beer & eating a ton of sweets, breads & about anything else.

Outside of running, I joined a gym this afternoon down the street from me, I quit eating out at work & have stayed away from the vend!

I just really hope I can stick to everything...

2014 - End of 1 solid year of a fitness program.  3-4 crossfit workouts a week and 2 12-week 5x5 strength cycles this year.  Cardio work capacity is way way up, and my one rep maxes deadlift/squat/bench/press are 315/215/195/120.  I have never lifted serious weight before, max bench and squat were 125 when I started, very excited.  Blood pressure and lipids are down and I feel great even though working out sucks.  2nd year is going to really open things up now that I have a base cardio and strength capacity to work with.

I hate doing squats more than anything. My motivation for leg days is  a guy I see nearly every day when I'm working out whose legs are so damn tiny. I'm not kidding, his calves can't be much bigger than my wrist, but his upper body is massive.

Genetics plays a large part in anyone's physique.  I'm not talking about being fat because people in your family are fat, I'm talking about how much muscle mass a person can build naturally.  I come from a line of tall thin Germans and short stocky Italians.  My lean body mass is 182lbs.  At this point in my life (52), that number might fluctuate +/- 5lbs depending on the time of year and how heavy I'm lifting.   I've been blessed with strong, muscular legs and don't have to work them that hard - which is good because I can't do squats anymore.

I don't worry about numbers because I don't take numbers to the beach.  I look at the mirror and get all of the feedback that I need.

Eat healthy, lift heavy, do cardio, mostly - have discipline.  That is the magic formula.
