Post by: Scott F. on August 01, 2019, 12:38:32 PM
The trip has officially begun. On my way to the ATL airport for the first leg of the trip- Flight to Minot ND this afternoon and then help finish packing and loading up.

We hit the road Friday morning with a 600 mile drive to Bozeman MT.

I will post pics along the way. Should be an epic trip!

Yes, their Class C motor home like most only has a 5k hitch rating. With the trailer it was too heavy

Lol...it reminds me of hours upon hours of boring travel.

Mixed with some excitement :)

The reward is about to be experienced though, and those boring miles will be a distant memory (until you think about the return trip).

Ah, yes, I remember those as well.  The thing that made a big difference IMO was caravaning and having pre-determined stop overs.

Here is some pics from the bear visit the first night at camp in South Lake Tahoe. Got in the Jeep and was trying to get our ratchet strapped food bin out.

We woke up to rustling bins in the Jeep and thought it was kids trying to steal stuff...turned out to be a black bear about 8ft from us when we got out of the tent.

We did yell at he bear, but it was because we heard the bins rustling and thought it was some teenagers that had been around our campsite earlier. We woke up and jumped out of the tent expecting to confront kids and we were 10 feet from the bear which was climbing into the rear door opening biting into the bin.  The bear just walked off slow and even looked back at us to give us that “whataya gonna do about it” look.  We heard the bear visiting many other campsites that night.

We didn’t have bear spray but I probably wouldn’t have used it if we did. The bear just moved on.

Eric (Jeep owner) was kind of hoping the Jeep would have some marks to go a long with the story. The top and doors were off so the bear had access without having to tear anything open.

Little Sluice Box. Not what it use to be from the pictures from the late 90s early 2000s.

Is that the one they poured concrete in? Overall do you think the rubicon by itself is worth the trip from Georgia?

I couldn’t tell that concrete was poured in but maybe. It had a bunch of smaller boulders that had been added to fill in between the big rocks.

The Rubicon trail was worth the trip from GA in my opinion.  If I go back I will spend 3 days/2 nights on the trail instead of the 2 days/1 night we did. It felt rushed on the trail for 2 days. The trail is not hard but there are optional obstacles and beautiful camping that I would have liked to have had more time to enjoy. Some things I would like to run both directions. We did the Old Sluice downhill but it would be fun and challenging to turn around and do it uphill (there is a bypass that you can use to not have to go on it in the same direction twice).

Here are the few pics from Old Sluice. I had to do a lot of spotting here so didn’t get many pics. The Old Sluice is a really fun section. It reminds me of some of my favorite really rocky sections of AOP...dry of course.

Awesome pics Scott. You guys still hitting foredyce? I heard ,can’t remember where it was from though, that they went through and blew up a bunch of the bigger rocks to fill in the little sluice. I don’t know how true it is.

We did Fordyce. We only spent one day though and it deserves two. I’ll get the Fordyce pics up when I have time.

They were doing work at the loon lake dam and using helos to sling load there tools and equipment in and out.

There were also helicopters bringing in supplies for the upcoming Jamboree the weekend after we left.

Looks like a great trip!  I was at Lake Tahoe with my wife for an anniversary trip this weekend, close by you all. For some reason the wife failed to share my enthusiasm for the Rubicon being so close by. We did a lot of hiking and she got to hear all about what a dream all the dry rock would’ve been to wheel. Glad you got to experience it!

What are the temps like during the day and at night? Anything you wished you had brought but didn’t? Anything that you brought and thought you would need but that you could have done without?

Still trying to find time to post the second part of our trip- wheeling Fordyce Creek Trail.

I did discover after our trip that we ran the same sequence as the UA2016, so this writeup is very accurate to what we experienced.

Temps can vary out there, but for us it was perfect. Highs in the mid 70s and lows in the 50s at night. 25% humidity! I didn’t sweat profusely like I do summer wheeling in the southeast.

As far as the items to take, there isn’t anything that came to mind that we didn’t have but needed. The biggest thing is you have to pack light bc you are wheeling the trail with all of your supplies and camping gear. The point A to B aspect of this trip adds an extra level of adventure. It forces you to be resourceful and know your rig.  No running back to the parking lot to get something off the trailer.

Sorry for the delay, here are the pics from Fordyce. This trail was awesome! The winch hills are fun and the scenery is incredible. Tons of granite with tons of traction. You need to plan your trip on the trail based on the water levels that PG&E controls from the dam. We hit the trail a day before the beginning of Sierra Trek so the water levels had been dropped very low for their ride groups.  The trail is something like 11 miles long and has several water crossings.
