Title: Lost Jeep Cherry.... and a ???
Post by: HammerG26 on December 19, 2008, 02:45:03 PM
Had the chance to take the Jeep out in about 10" of snow today to get some pizza for my pregnant wife.  On the way home, I happened upon a guy and his wife who had put their 2wd Dodge P/U into a ditch.  What great feeling it was to be able to help someone out while snowing so hard and being about 20 degrees.
I took some doing, but we finally got him out.

Question is this:
I had it in 4wd Low and in D... we looped a strap around his frame and placed both ends onto the back of the Jeep (rear tow hook in the receiver).  Several times the wheels spun hard trying to get traction on the snow and ice and trying to pull him out... can I damage my Jeep by over-revving the engine / tires (within reason)?

Anything I could have done better?

TIA
Hammer

Good way to b reak ring gears for sure. Where you backing up or going forward?

Trying to go forward... did want to go backwards.. heaven forbid I got traction and lurched toward him.. :(
Nothing seems to be wrong, for the record... just asking...
And also looking for future advice.

You're good. An elastic strap is best for those situations.

Had a strap I bought from Quadratec... KEEPER RECOVERY STRAP 30'X3"(30K LBS) 02933
Wonder if a winch would have helped... if so, maybe I can make that argument to my wife (along with a slight lift and more aggressive tires)... :)

So you were spinning and giving it more gas? I don't think you got to much to worry about esp with the stock tire sizes. I mean if that did damage then the mud jockey guys would be in some serious trouble. The only problem with snow/ice and trying to pull someone is traction. Even with front and rear lockers all 4 tires on ice will just slide. The nice part about a winch is as long as you have enough traction to hold the Jeep stationary the winch will do all the pulling.

Thus why I asked if he was in reverse or forward. Reverse can tear some crap up!

Next time, put in 1st too. Just to make sure that it stays in that gear.

Also, with snow, you wouldn't have to worry too much with breaking parts. An axle shaft or u-joint would go before a ring and pinion or carrier.

And Ben, just wandering but why would you say reverse would tear some stuff up? True, the gearing wouldn't be as low the rear axle would be weaker then usual but the front axle would be stronger (unless you have a high pinion) but overall there are no new stresses that the drivetrain would encounter then under similar situations but in a forward gear.

I would wait on buying the Ar 15 prices are stupid right now 600 dollar guns are selling around 1000 not a smart move. I would buy all the .223 ammo you could afford the gun will come back down. 90% of the people that have bought ars in the 2 months bought them for 1 reason and its not to shoot them so just give them a few-6 months and the gun market will be flooded with ar 15s when they realize the 2nd admin. isnt going anywhere.

No rush on the AR15, bought the lower at a good price (normal price) and will build it up like I want... no worries there. :)  Although I did find a S&W M&P here in MI for $1000 - which is "normal" price... :D

{btt} Ben, I have seen more stuff break and heard of more things breaking trying to reverse something than a forward.

I will remember that - though, as I said before, he was behind me, so i was not about to TRY to go backwards unless it was to move, reposition, and go forward.

Yeah - me either.  Jeep handled like a champ.  It was a lot of fun watching people on the road STRUGGLING - I was just moving along... it was great.
Expecting 2 or so more inches tonight and tomorrow... woo hoo :)

One thing I did learn, I need to lift my jeep.  The stock "skid plate" was leaving all kinds lines in the snow... hopefully my wife will see the wisdom of my argument... well, maybe not, we do live in Georgia... one could always hope. :)
