Can't wait. It will be a fun day
-
Need to get the route planned. I know the area almost as well as the back of my hand ;) could stay on dirt roads almost the entire day. I should be in for this one. Probably camp in the mountains somewhere, rooms are for girls! :)

Sounds like a good time need a get away again Ben may be down for camping I will be two weeks into my new semester so I know I will need a break and hopefully my jeep will done as well.

Plenty of spots in the area for a good basecamp.
-
The Allen gang will be there. Can't wait to meet some folks. Four of us at the time of post. (The oldest may decline but I would like to reserve a seat just in case.)

Ranier.
Welcome. Look forward to meeting you and the fam.
-
Is there any specific place everyone is going to be camping?
Just a single day ride so a lot of folks will make it a day trip. I know a few that will want to camp on the mountain, even if it's 20 degrees.
We'll grab a hotel room for Sat night so I can have a beer or 2. ;D
-
Wow, we already have 34 for dinner! We've discussed a few restaurants, but now I think it is coming down to who can accommodate us.
We will leave Helen shortly after 9am, so I'm hoping we can return before the dinner crowd hits.
I'll see about calling around and see who can accommodate a group like ours.
If anyone knows of a place in downtown Helen that accommodates large groups, and has been part of a large group, please let me know through PM.
-
Maybe if time permits, we can hit Bell Mtn in the afternoon for sunset, or close to sunset? Either way this sounds like a blast!

I like the idea, and had thought about that, but looks like we will have a large group that will be difficult on Bell in the dark, and we need to be in Helen before it gets that late, so we will hit Bell earlier.
Maybe it will snow. :o
-
The only place big enough to handle this size group is the place right at the river on your left when coming in. Can't recall the name though.
-
I think it is called pauls on the river.
(OlllllllO)
-

Yeah Paul's is good size and they have parking

Valet parking?? </LMAO/>
-
They are usually packed all day long but there is Parkin on the river and then we can walk up and yay bring the anow

I'd be up for this. I'm not a big fan of crowds, so If anyone else prefers to ride up Bell I'd tag along.

I'm not friends with crowds either so I'm down w that.
-
I am in the same boat bell is a fun little ride I am down as well
-
Bell Mtn is on our ride during the afternoon, and we will head back to Helen from there.
If you guys want to stay for sunset, that's cool, but let us know if you will not be attending dinner so we know what kind of numbers to expect.
-
Barring work getting in the way, I'll be attending this event. I'll probably skip dinner and stay for the sunset from the mountain.
Dave
-
On my calendar. Now I need to get off my duff and replace my head gasket!
-
Sunset on top of a mountain... think I will take that one in. I can eat dinner anytime. {letseat}
-
I'm w you Ben.
-
My son has basketball in the middle of that day, so unless I can figure a way around that, I won't be making this one. Too bad, cuz I probably wouldn't have broken an axle on this ride!
-
Sounds like fun, I'll be there! Now to decide which is better, food or sunset, hmmmm....
-
Maybe you guys can cook dinner for us up there. That would be COOL! Probably COLD!
{letseat} {letseat} {letseat}
-
Yeah, dinner could be done. Sausage.
-
Sunset on top of a mountain... think I will take that one in. I can eat dinner anytime. {letseat}
Damn!! Did I open a can of worms with that suggestion! Next time I will need to do it via PM!! But hey, while I'm stirring the pot, are we cooking on the mountain? I was looking forward to being served. ;D
-
Ha ha ha I have a portable grill I could bring
-
me toooooooo.
Do I need to change my hotel to Hiawassee?
-
me toooooooo.
Do I need to change my hotel to Hiawassee?
Thats what I was thinking...Is our ending spot and dinner menu changing?
-
Really sounds like a plan, but the parking will be impossible but we'll make it work.
Post up if you like the idea of a weenie roast on the mtn at sunset! {letseat}
-
I am good either way!
-
Got a portable grill, folding chair and a cooler... Ready as I will ever be.
-

We can park tire on tire :)
I'm good either way, whatever the group wants is cool
-
Sweet I am in the same boat
-
I would rather eat in Downtown Helen Personally, but obviously not alone. I gotta tell ya, it's gonna be cold on top of the Mountain when the sun sets! I'd rather be in a restaurant/bar when the sun goes down. </BEER/> Majority wins this one though, unless we split
-
I am game for eating downtown. I know the wife and kid will not like sitting outside to eat. Ready for the tide though and the weekend away
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
-
Yep, it's going to be cold. if it's windy, it will be brutal up there. If it has rained, stockers will have trouble with the bypass/ The main will be snot 4 foot deep ruts. Good news is it isn't very far from whee he good road ends, and can be hiked in 10 minutes.
It's 30 minutes back to Helen. Should we stay and eat in Hiawassee?
Or do most want to leave before dark, and go to Helen for some grub?
If we split, I'll decide then based on where I'm sleeping.
-
Anybody know of any good eating in Hiawassee
-
Hiawasee does not have much that I remember.
-
How far is Rib Country? I know it is out by Beasley. Can it hold 54 people?? I think Bell is close to it.. maybe not.., Since I stirred up so much, I should probably keep my pie hole shut! I wasn't intending to eat on the mountain when I said that earlier. Of course I will do what everyone else is doing but a warm restaurant sounds good to me. Maybe a summer trip/cook out to bell would be better time? That could be an "ad-hoc" type of ride.
-
I will be staying in Helen. Already got the room booked. But I am game to eat wherever as long as it is not to far away.

It is actually one of the small house deals on the river. Two bed room type deal with a hot tube facing the river. It might change to a regular hotel the wife just booked it because we stayed there before and liked it.

Okay. I'm thinking the house sounds pretty good. Nothing better than a hot tub overlooking the river!!
I'm coming w/ Justin (DirtyJ) and bringing both wifes. Looking forward to the trail rides followed up by dinner in Helen. Sounds awesome!!

So whats the plan? Is everyone spiting up or are some people still going to Helen for dinner/drinks?
-
I am open either way. I think a lot of it will depend on weather, Cold , wet?????

Is this event kid friendly? If so, got room for 5 more?

I know you guys have been talking about a restaurant that will hold alot of people with plenty of parking and the Western Sizzling has opened up between Helen and Cleveland. It is a good buffet and there is plenty of room(just my 2 cents)
-
will have 4 total. i used to wheel a lot but my wife and 2 kids never have, should be fun. ive also never wheeled in GA so im pumped about that! </ROCKIN/>
-
This will be a very casual "cruise" i doubt any of us will even look at the 4wd shifter. So keep that in mind for families, this will be a good ride for passengers and newbs.
-
4wd will be required in more than one location for everyone but u lol

Gotcha, thanks, I must have missed it when I read through the thread initially.
-
The meeting place is very easy to find. Go thru helen and keep going until you see the flea market on your left. Big tubing buses and signage. If you go past the bridge just after that market, you have went too far. Hope the weather is nice and warm for this ride. Love to take the doors off and cruise.

Thanks, i'll just look for the hoard of Jeeps and other 4x4 vehicles. And ditto on the weather, doors off, or even just top off, would be great. We can only hope!

Sunset is 5:57 in Hiawassee on Jan 26th.
I spoke with Pauls Steakhouse. No reservations.
Said we need to be there before 5:30 if we want to sit together. After 6 there will most likely be a wait just to get a table.
So those that want to have dinner will leave Bell Mtn around 4:30.
-
How long of drive from Hiawassee to Helen?
-
How long of drive from Hiawassee to Helen?
20 miles or so, 45 minutes at least to get all those rigs there and parked.
-
Yep, Google maps says 30 mins,
but we have to get down off of Bell which is going to take a few mins,
and find parking just as you've said.
-
If everyone is wanting to stay in Helen, the western Sizzlin would more than likely hold everyone and it is between Helen and Cleveland. But if Hiawassee is where people want to go Daniels Steak House will hold us all as well.
-
POSSIBLE PROBLEM SOLVER :
I just spoke to the owners of the cabin we (Me, DirtyJ-Justin, & ACGiddens-Adam) booked in Helen. They said there is absolutely no problem with having the group back at our place for a cookout!!
That way it doesn't matter what time we finish riding or get back to Helen. We can cookout that night. {cheers2}

Dinner in helen sounds great to me. I was only offering because it sounded like we couldn't find a restaurant that would accommodate us.
So we will do that and if anyone wants to come over afterwards they are welcome.
And I checked on the parking before I posted that on the forum :-*

Not gonna be any snow up there... just mud {no} Rain next 3 days in buckets... powerwasher is in my future!

Oh I broke mine out already ha ha ha and hopefully have different tires by then as well.

The rain will make it more interesting. Unfortunitily in this sport your Jeep will get dirty every now and then, it will still be awesome {letseat}
-
I hope the forecast is correct, and the rain ends Wednesday, and it will be dry 8 days before we ride.
It wasn't so dry Saturday.

The Weather Channel is saying 60% chance of rain next Friday. Looks like we are going to be doing some mudding. Should be fun. We got a cabin 10 minutes from downtown Helen with a hot tub for $99 a night. They have other cabins still available if anyone needs the information.

Amen to that, the misses and me both don't enjoy the cold at all. I had to bribe the wife with a stay in A cabin with a hot tub to get her out of the house for this one.
Speaking of, where's everyone staying in a cabin at. We just started looking so we really don't have any idea where to look. Thanks for the input.

That would be FS 44. It runs from robertstown up over the mountain up to the Appalachian trail at the top of Unicoi gap.
Camping is still available in some spots but most of the spots along the river have been banned because of down right abuse. I'll second that Unicoi state park is you're best bet.

First timer here: how will the ride work, will we roll for 2-3 hours solid at a time, or kind of drive for an hour, come to a scenic spot get out, mess around, get back on the roll get to a river crossing, get out and make the approach etc - find the next spot?
-
On this trip, it will be all dirt forestry roads and I am sure we will be rolling thru without alot of stops. Alot of ground to cover. Stop for lunch at a scenic spot, regroup and continue. Bring a pee bottle </LMAO/>

You can have anything you want. Just bring it. We have about 25-30 min stop for lunch max.

have had the rear d shaft balanced twice, and finally rebuilt. Not sure if I scraped it on a rock, but it was really out of balance, and you could see it shaking while up on a rack. While trying to find the issue found out that my teraflex rear upper trackbar on one side had a bad joint. Those were nice and greased properly, but the joint just crapped out on me. Had those replaced with poly track bars. My clunk is finally gone along with some rattles I could never track down. Headed out to the hunting lease last weekend and when I get to 75 the harmonic vibe is still there, just not as bad. Taking it in tomorrow to try and balance the tires and wheels, which havent been done since 2010. Hopefully that fixes it, but we will see. I am just really frustrated and not too optimistic at this point. I've spent $240 on the dshaft and 300 plus labor on the track bars so far and get shit daily from the wife on money put into this jeep, so going on a ride is not in my best interest to keep her happy. At least I didnt have to pay for the tailgate the car wash place screwed up. I got it back today and Abra did a great job fixing it, and even fixed some other small dents from my hilift. sorry for the rant {btt}
-
Josh,
My experience has been those harmonic vibes are not wheels and tires but driveline.
Let's home you didn't bend the ouput on the transfer case when you bent the driveshaft and its something else.
Is the rear opinion n ice and tight?
Disconnect the front driveshaft from the axle and strap it up. Drive it. You'll know right away if that has anything to do with it. My front ds has been my issue 5 or 6 times..
-
it is nice and tight, I will try that tomorrow with the front ds
thanks!
-
Your Jeep only vibrates at 75 mph? Man mine feels like its going to fall apart above 70. No telling whats wrong with it or why but I just dont drive over 70 and its a nice drive. Last time I got bad shimmy around 45 mph my wheels/tires were so far out of balance and once 4WP re-did them it was pretty good.
-
74 and under it is fine, right at 75 is where it kicks in and gets worse with speed. I just want to know if it is a big issue, as I am afraid of wearing other crap out, if it is not then at least my mind with be at ease
-
Agree with Doug on the front shaft idea. I had similar issues and it was the front shaft. I was convinced it was the rear. I love my waggy front 44, no shft spin while driving :smoke
-
Alright read through the whole thread, def others have kids are coming, I am not worried about the driving, just the kids in the car. My CB radio is arriving tomorrow and I'll install it.
I've got
Avery 6
Brann 2+
Brann loves cars and jeeps - he spots another Jeep before we do everytime - so I really think he'll be excited but you guys need to just tell me this is not going to be doable with kids honestly. If I have to leave out that will be possible right? I've done lots of trail driving in Oconee forest in Jasper County and I'm fine making my way back on FS roads.
Anyone have a route map? What are the creek/river crossings? I want pics of my jeep in the river man!

I was at the top of the Unicoi mtn around 11 this morning and the road and gravel are glaze over with ice and there is more ice to come. I live in Hiawassee and they are having to pull 4wd wreckers out of the ditches, so its pretty bad. Be careful up here tomorrow guys because the Hiawassee side is alot worse than the Helen side.

I agree. Hopefully the GDOT will have the main roads to Helen clear, and everyone can arrive safely.
It will be late in the day before we approach Hiawassee, and we should have good roads by then, but the trails are going to be wet.
We are getting a very early start.

Adam any problems driving up or was it smooth rolling?
-
Guys, I'll be bringing my SWR meter Sat AM if anyone needs it.
-
Need help with tuning CB, SWR (channel 40) is too low, channel 1 is perfect. I'm hearing people around my area. Usual instructions don't seem to help correct it, but I had to jack up a jumper cable into my SWR meter and that may be part of the problem. I'll try to show early if someone can assist with a PL 259 jumper and the knowledge, otherwise its live and learn! Looking forward to meeting you guys.
-
If 40 is higher than 1 your antenna is to long
If 1 is higher than 40 your to short.
You have to play with both channels adjusting the antenna to get the SWR's down. 1.5 and lower is perfect. Jeeps are good to get 2 or lower

Just got a message from Mike. How did u get seperated?
Small group of us (5-7 rigs) stopped at bathroom rest area on 75. I was in rear of group heading out of parking lot and had a problem with my rig getting back into 2wd. Delayed me for about 20 seconds. Raced out and only had Adam in my sight. For some reason Adam made a u-turn but waved us to keep going forward. We couldn't see anyone in front of us and had no idea if the group turned on an access road or anything. We were trying to hail anyone on CB channel 7 but no response as range and interference was not ideal (and obviously cell phone coverage sucked as well..). We searched for about 40 minutes around Lake Burton because we heard that was the possible destination before giving up and heading home. Suffice to say we were quite bummed and disappointed to not been able to finish the ride. For the future, I think it would be very helpful if we had an actual driver's meeting where it could be detailed a bit where certain destinations are just in case someone gets separated from the main group. Being that there are a lot of families with kids/females that need to make frequent pit-stops, we can't rely on just keeping up with the guy in front of us.
-
Yep we got lost also and just decided to head back to Helen but ohhh well we still enjoyed it and nice to meet everyone it just sucked to not be able to finish
-
Sorry we lost you guys. We waited for you to carch up. I know Ben waited and saw you pull out of the pit stop before he came on up with the others to where we were a few miles up the road at Bethel church where we stopped to wait on those of u that stopped. I dont think you could have driven by us but I guess you might have. We relayed back to Ben on the cb where we were stopping so everyone could hear. We waited about 15 mins and then headed onto the end and made a left and went up the west side of Burton and then west to our next forest service road.
Sent from my Samsung Note 2
-
Yes, we should have had a drivers meeting to fill us in on a few details. Yes, a few more pit stops would have been good for those with little ones as well. We will surely discuss and make improvements on the next ride. I know the ones at the back of the heard always have the roughest time. Like lunch. By the time I got there, we were ready to roll within 15 minutes. We will surely be less schedule oriented and keep a watch out for the family groups. Thank you for the input!
-
Oh and Bell Mtn as well. I got to the top, parked and Doug was ready to roll out. Ryan, Dawn and I stayed on bell, watched the sunset, moonrise and had a nice fire. Much better than sitting in a restraunt, but that is just my opinion ;)
