You'll never admit it, but you're first thought when you smelled smoke wasn't about your kids... It was that you never got to wheel at Moab!! LOL

I'll post the link as soon as possible. Jared, Ben, do yourself a favor and don't look at them. It will just break your heart.
Very proud of Hayden today. He crawled Double Whammy like a pro and right after he did it, a killer YJ on 40's darn near flopped.

We feel your spirits!!! Really sorry everyone could not come. "Pritchett Canyon". Holy Crap. Really would have preferred to do this at the end of the week, but made it through with no breakage that I know of. I still cannot believe it. I think I made it up everything but rockpile where I got a strap pull. Killer Wheeling does not really describe it. Looking forward to all the rest of the rides. Ben, you must have been with me in spirit for me to survive!!!

//popcorn// dang danny that rig sounds sick nasty.
-
I didn't get a scratch - first time flop/roll in 10+ years of doing this stuff. :o
Damage report is windshield fubared, passenger door dented and slight twist - can't roll up window but glass intact, couple of small holes in the top, frame for the top bent ( might be fixable), CB antenna broken off. Also broke the booty-fab adapter for the 8-lug spare on the tire carrier (couple of broken welds), easy fix.
Tailstand was pure chance - backing off the rocks slowly, and the rear tire sank in a hole. That was actually more alarming than the roll as it was very slow.
-
{popcorn} dang danny that rig sounds sick nasty.
Yes it does. Following him gave me serious V8 envy. It performs very well too.
I will get some pics and vid up tonight I hope.

Best setup for Moab seems to be longer wheelbase, good tires, low gears. HP relatively unimpoortant.

so far I can't really tell that one type of set up is better than another. We have wheeled with some locals with a variety of rigs...short wheel base and long, medium tires and big...it really boils down to knowing the line to take and the speed to take it. But Jared, our 4 door wheel base is working really nice out here ;D

Good to hear... I'll have to keep living vicariously through your white 4 door until next time!

What's the gearing of that toy? Form the sound of it, its got to have a high crawl ratio in the video. Very smooth, controlled, and sloe which makes me think its somewhere in the 100's:1.

Kirk, did the new jeep have any aftermarket cage addition.
Yes, he just put a cage in it before he left. I think the stock middle bar would have held up, but man, right on the top is bad.

Mo carnage...
U joint gave up on the rear DS at the Transfer Case, took out the carden joint, centering ball and the yoke.
Good news, parts are in stock at Moab 4X4.
Moral of this story.. Use solid u joints. This was a Tom Wood DS with his "gold seal" joints. Pretty sure they are from china. All new spicer u joints going in.

When was the last time you checked for slop in the u joint?
I have factory uni bearing going out in my tj. 75k total miles, didn't wheel until 40's, and had 35's around the 60k mark. Wheeling wears on things.

Larry and I did Helldorado this afternoon. It proved to be a rough one for the sheet metal.

Ended up hitting the passenger side twice, the second time was after the waterfall and most likely un avoidable, both Larry and I both got wedged in after siding down the side of a wall.
The first body contact for me probably could have been avoided with a better line climbing higher up the drivers side, and I didn't back up after contact so that's my fault as well. My relatively clean 29 yr old cab is getting wrinkled up quick!
-
HO HUM. another day on the trail, another carnage. Broke front left waggy u-joint. Ears messed up on inner. Outer was okay and re-used. Thanks to Moab 4x4 Outpost, back in business. Lucky they had an inner that would fit. It probably had been getting worse and worse with all the beating. Sad tomorrow is last day. then pack up and hit the road early Friday. Booo. Oh well, can't afford any more breaks anyway!

My brand new cb would not work on Sunday. Fixed it Monday morning.
My fan stopped working right at the end of Sundays ride. Fixed it Sunday night.
Rear diff was pouring fluid Monday. Didn't find the real problem till Tuesday and fix it.
Transmission line leaking Tuesday right at the fitting on the radiator. Fixed Tuesday.
Wednesday. No problems.
Thursday. No problems.
I did or tried everything that was close to the trails that the group was on.
Looking forward to next year.

Doug, Advanced Adapters makes a replacement cable that uses steel connectors instead of the cheap plastic ones that come stock. Not cheap, but a permanent fix for that problem. AllSouth put it on for me and probably have the part number.

Left Moab @ 5:30am, stopped for the night in Elk City, OK. Tornado(s) reported ahead, so going no further tonight. 1000 miles to go.
Thursday I visited Arches NP and hiked to Delicate Arch, 1.5 miles each way. Nice to get some exercise before the long ride home.
-
Be safe out there guys. Don't push it to hard to get home.
-
3 or 4 tornadoes on the ground a bit ago in Oklahoma City.
We are about 125 miles out
I40 and I35 closed now.
We are detouring South to Dallas.

Got home a while ago. Hope everyone stays safe. Tornado's everywhere tonight!!

We decided to go home via I-70 early this morning. We are stopped in Saline Kansas for the night, far away from the tornados.

Been watching the local weather this evening. Appears that from where I am going south via Wichita Falls to Dallas will add only 100 miles, so I'll likely do that tomorrow.

We hit some snow flurries on Vail pass and around the Eisenhower tunnel.
Here is a pic from the continental divide in the tunnel, at the crest we hit 11,1xx ft!

Back in GA.
Thanks Tony and Hayden for sharing a tow pig with us.
Lost another trailer tire on the way home. 2 JKs are heavy!
Trip was awesome. Could not ask for more from our club members or the Moab folks that rode with us all but one day.
Thanks to everyone for all they did helping each other including me. Scotts friend Eric always jumped right in too.
Hats off to Moab 4x4 Outpost for some awesome quick repairs.

Gary & Melissa were absolutely awesome! They really went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a great time! Overall the trip was awesome. We will definitely be back next year! The scenery was great, the people were great, the house was great, we just had an awesome time!
Thanks to everyone that went with Georgia Trail Riders - we had a great group {cheers2}

Glad you all made it back OK. I'm stopped in Pearl, MS for the night. 400 miles tomorrow. I went south to avoid OKC and got caught in a traffic mess around Ft. Worth, but otherwise no other delays or weather issues.

Did you end up finding any other problems with the TJ? Other than the overheating and windshield?

Driver door dented (window won't roll up), CB antenna broken, clamp bar broken on top, top support bars trashed.

Arrived safely at 2am this morning. Alternator went out in Arkansas yesterday around 1 pm and I had a 2.5 hr. delay. A guy stopped and called his mechanic to see if he could come help. He lived at the next exit. Great guy. Billy Rose. Plumerton, Ark.He only charged me 100 bucks. Gave him a $50 tip. He was delighted and I was happy. Now I know how to change out the alternator.
The light show outside of OKC was amazing. stopped and slept for six hours 10 miles before OKC.
Great times. Great people. Thanks to Gary and Melissa, Jeff, Larry, Dee and the other locals for guiding and spotting. Thanks to all the GATR guys and Scott's friend Eric for all the help. Luckily my breaks were fixable. I am d-e-d, ded. Very tired. I did get a nap and that helped. Did not get many pics. Camera died. Battey compartment cover would not close. Did get some on my camera. Thanks to all for all the great pics. Probably won't be wheeling for a while. Need to get the bank account in the black.
I don't think I'll ever forget the feelings I had going up Hell's gate and Escalator. Def pucker moments. there were quite a few of those.
-
I got back about 3:30 this afternoon. No drama until going around Birmingham when a trailer tire blew. Other than a cloudburst near Temple, GA the rest of the ride was uneventful.
-
We got in last night just before midnight.
I dropped off Danny's jeep today at Allsouth and went home and worked on the trailer.
Next weekend I install the front BTF cage stuff.
-
I kept all of my fuel receipts for the Moab trip. Results:
Total distance driven: 4073 miles (detours to El Paso going and Dallas coming back, plus driving in Moab)
Total fuel bought: 350.322 gallons of diesel.
Total price paid: $1271.72 for an average of $3.63/gal
11.63 miles/gallon overall fuel economy.
-
Great info! Thanks
-
Looks like you guys had a blast out there. Thanks for sharing all the pics. I love going to Moab vicariously ;D
-
I think Tony and I averaged about 10.5 mpg, maybe a little more as his speedo was a little about 3% slow compared to the GPS with the oversized tires, and our total expense for 2 rigs should be around $1300-$1400 split evenly. Waiting on my AMEX to post the charges so I have an exact cost.
Trip is too long on the ends and too short in the middle lol.
-
This was just an epic trip. There is a damn good reason that Moab is considered the Mecca of offroading...because it is. Period!
Great, great time. The wheeling, the climate, the scenery, the friends...just a killer time. Even the trials and tribulations we all had to work through we're memorable.
I'll post up the total diesel costs and jeep fuel coats soon once Doug and I total up. But yes, we did avg a out 10.5 mpg towing and we were HEAVY.
Start saving now to make 2014!!
-
I got 10.4 miles per gallon round trip and my combo was just under 2k less in weight than Tony and Doug.
I-40 is the worst road I have ever traveled on in my life. When I go back next year it will be on I-70 out and back.
-
Randy, post your fuel bill if you can get it. I will be towing with my 2000 sub and it has the 5.3. Curious to see what it cost you and what your mileage was. Has to be around 10 or maybe more. I am going to dolly mine as I do not have a trailer. Disconnect the rear shaft, swap some road tires on the rear that I have already mounted on some old jeep wheels and roll. Wish my sub towed well. I could make that trip in probably 3 tanks of gas one way. 700+ out of a tank on the highway right now. Or I might do the Danny route. Fly out with the wife, have somebody tow mine out and pay them for gas. hhhmmmmmmm, now that sounds WAY better than the drive out and back, fun one way for a little, then just sucks. ;D
-
Whatever happened to the Ford tow pig that was leaking trans fluid?

It really couldn't have been any better being able to just wake up Friday morning and go to the airport - I was at my house eating dinner before dark!! + the person towing is able to save $12 - $1400.00 in fuel. It's a win for everyone! It also subtracts 4 days off of your vacation so your able to work more hours.
I am not opposed to towing next year if I can do the buddy system like Tony & Doug though.

Leaving trucks in Moab is another option and my favorite. Flying back and forth is easy. ;D
Anyway, since I am a core member in GATR and also a Moab Friends 4 Wheeling member (also Red Rock 4 Wheeler :o), I wanted to thank you guys for coming out to Moab and letting us get to know you better.
Although I only got to wheel with you 3 days (rusty nail, pritchett, and hell's), it was a wonderful time and your group was awesome. I got to sharpen my spotting skills, recovery skills, emergency medicine skills, and Redroxx became a super tow rig x 2! </LMAO/>
I'm glad to know you all are coming next year so my Moab club can better plan to host my Georgia club! Just to let the group know, we have a decent number of folks that like to do the easier stuff so if you give us a trail wish list in advance, we can provide some trail leaders and generally show everyone why we love Moab so much! I would hate to have someone not come because they don't have two lockers, big tires, etc.
Gary Lee and I are still sharing stories from your visit and we feel like we developed some lifelong friendships. We hope to wheel with you here in Georgia or at least meet up with you guys for dinner sometime soon.

Whatever happened to the Ford tow pig that was leaking trans fluid?
The truck made it all the way back, the leak seemed to slow down and was sporadic on the way home, stopping sometimes to find that it didn't appear to leak at all between the last fuel stop. It is barely reading a change on the dipstick now, I didn't have to add any for the return trip so I am estating that I lost less than a quart at most.
This truck is my daily driver now so I have to figure out when I am going to get the leak fixed. Don't want to end up with my slow leak turning into a big leak on the side of the road.
As for fuel mileage, I don't have all my receipts but I was calculating the mpg along the way and it was right at 12 for the average. That's a 7.3l weighing in just under 15,500lb.

Melissa, The trip definitely would not have been the same without you and Gary! You are one of the best spotters I've wheeled with! (Although it took me a few trys at "Rocker Knocker" to figure this out). My wife and I had an absolute blast!! I can't thank you & Gary enough for the hospitality and the tour of Moab!
-
Scott if you ever figure out the trans leak PM me. Like I said mine spit a lot out at the top of the cabins at Harlan. Didn't leak a drop on the way home, didn't leak towing to morris mountain but leaked a little when I got back. I was running faster coming home though

I too would like to know a total cost(minus broken stuff) to get out there and back... "so I can start saving my pennys for next year" lol
and Id be willing to throw in for someone to tow my rig out there.... A) cause I don't have a tow rig and B) to help split gas costs
so would yall say 35s were the best route for MOAB? ill be running 33s for a while...
Chris
-
Aside from the $1200+ fuel cost I spent 2 nights in a motel each way (average about $80/night) and $350 for the house rental during the week. Ate mostly at the house and spent probably $20/day for food. The two day rides used about 5 gals of gas each. All in all, I think $2000 is a reasonable budget leaving some room for repairs/parts if you break.
Assuming you find someone who can tow your rig along with theirs, I'd think you'd need to pay more than half the fuel cost to account for wear and tear on your buddy's vehicle and trailer. That would be up to you two to decide. For the young and able-bodied team driving straight through save money on hotels but is hard on you.
Flying to SLC or Grand Junction would cost around $300 r/t, and you'd need to rent a car to get to and from Moab. Danny can likely tell you what his expenses were in that regard.
-
not toooo shabby... an average vaca to the beach or 1/2 the price of going to theme park type destinations LOL
looks like I have quite a bit of pennies to save! anyone wanna buy some junk from me?! LOL

Doug and Tony Show Fuel Costs:
Kennesaw to Moab - 1742 miles
Moab to Ok to Dallas to Kennesaw - 1870
Total miles - 3612
Avg. cost of diesel - $3.75
total gallons of diesel- 356
MPG - 10.15
Total fuel cost just for the trip - $1335
we also had some fuel to go get the trailer in Byron and then take it back but that is not reflected in the above numbers.

Why not go stright up where the person is standing?
Not doable ?
Off trail?
Or just to make it more difficult?
-
Can't do it. I have only seen videos of big horsepower rigs bounce up it. It is a huge ledge with stair steps that catch both tires which make a wall for all 4 tires. The line is perfect that you take but is just not comfortable.
-
Danny tried straight up in that MONSTER and was DENIED.
Crawled right up the technical line.
-
Yeah, I tried going straight up on the left side next to the rock they call "Rocker Knocker"
The front tires were being pulled left into the front of the rock - My rock sliders were laying on "Rocker Knocker" & the rear tires were just hitting the side of the rock. If you hit it head on with some speed it would probably go, but I wasn't trying to break something the first time I drove the vehicle.

very cool write up. After a long afternoon of slogging through mud and dealing with the humidity and bugs out on the JeepFest property, I'm missing MOAB!!!!
