Ok who would be interested in a Forest Service Road ride
on December 14th? We could do Trey Mtn or Charlie's Creek.
Never been thru whats it called Cash's valley or Cash's Rd.

You know we did this as our January ride for a couple of years.
Might be good to get some new members out or even I could
take my mall crawler out. Lets here what y'all think. Could be
a nice ride for a lot of folks.

If @DOUG still had the route he took us on a couple years ago, that was a lot of fun IMO.  I would be interested in it too.

Just talked with Doug and he does not have a list or map of the trails from back then. He said to search the old rides, he thought he shared some Google maps. I tried but I couldn't find anything. If we have enough interest I can go up there this weekend and scout out some trails.

White County
• FSR 44 (Chattahoochee River Road)

We did Charlie’s Creek a couple times this summer. I don’t believe it closes for the winter.  I know that @Cannonballkev lives very close to the (I believe) west entrance to that trail so he may have some more info. There is one big creek crossing on the Tallulah River that is the start of the trail on the East side and there is a forest service sign that notes to only use the designated fording route and to not park in the river. It’s a fun little trip. Would take probably an hour or two depending on how many rigs and how much people want to play on the one or two little off-camber climbs that are off of the trail. But it is a cool little trail for what it is. One of the coolest legal river fordings out there.
When we did it this summer, we ran it from East (above Clayton) to west, and it spits you out close to Hiawassee. We drove up to the top of Bell Mountain for some killer views and cool geology and then ate a late lunch in Hiawassee. Would not be a rock crawling trip but definitely a fun hour or two in the woods and then some time to hang out and grab some grub/brews.

I think your totally wrong....
I bet if we had advertised this for a month you would be surprised.
We used to have a couple rides like this during the year. We had a
ride called Helen and Hot dogs one year. I used to reserve a picnic
shelter at Unicoi State Park...we would ride the FSR then have a
picnic and let the kids play.

Doug did semd me his map of the trip he lead a few years back.

It looks they are calling for rain through this weekend and most of next week. Worst case, we could still do a Jeep caravan across the Lookout Mountain Scenic Hwy and come back down the Unicol Turnpike and skip the FSR's. This was Doug's main loop.

the whole reason they are doing temporary closures is bc of FB and similar groups damaging trails, mudding in the ditches, climbing embankments, and leaving trash. If this ride goes down, PLEASE be mindful of these things and keep the group in line. @Cannonballkev and I have to live up here and these are our camping and fishing spots they have closed thanks to the internet and some "clubs".

@Cannonballkev will have the most current, he lives right there. there are multiple ways in and out of Tray Mtn, to my knowledge they never close the main route, only the one from the Helen side that all the Instajeepers take pics on.

Call the forest service for the absolute last word on things, especially Beasly.

The new park is BS IMO. I have talked to the guy and its not actually open to the public, he will only take you on guided rides and is charging a fee. He says he owns the property, but he does not.

Not sure if it’s been closed down. But there is a fun road just off of Hwy 180 about 1.5mi from the store at 60/180. It’s called Flatlands.

It’s a very nice road that’s perfect for 4x4’s. It’s not very long, but it’s got a creek crossing. Small rock obstacle and plenty of off camber climbs.

Word in the trees was that it was going to be closed and gated due to people tearing up the wetland area down by the creek.

If this ride is near a possibility the wife and and I would like to join. We haven’t been active members due to life events. Had hoped to get to meet everyone at GATR Claus, but it seems to have been canceled.

There is also another pretty trail near the same area. Can’t exactly explain how to get there. It’s a simple trail very pretty though.

@Cannonballkev so, could we meet up in Helen and head out on 356, go north on 197 to Popcorn rd, turn right onto Plum Orchard rd, then take a left onto Cat Gap rd, turn left onto Persimmon rd, turn left onto Tallulah River rd. It looks like there is an open forest road following Tallulah but, I don't see a number for it and it looks like it runs into Charlie's Creek rd. From here it looks like we could take Charlie's creek rd to 76 then south on 75 and if there's time we could take Indian Grave Cave rd and hit the lower half of Tray Mountain rd?

FS 163 looks a long ride through the forest as well?

Flatlands is closed last I heard.

Take 163 ( popcorn) to 163 ( FS Sign is gone) 163 comes out on popcorn rd, go left to plum orchard, to persimmon , to Charlie’s creek , go right on ruby mine td to a culdesack and creek, loop back to Charlie’s creek to 76.

Popcorn and Charlie’s creek will take 2-3 hours.

I could do this trail in my sleep .

I'm most likely in for this one, going to try to recruit a couple of buddies that like a little easier wheeling.  I've done Tray and Dick's Creek before but would love an opportunity to learn more of the decent trails up there.

This might be too far away, but is anyone familiar with Dodd Road/Bend n Hickory Road near Toccoa Falls?

(https://goo.gl/maps/CBhrvfNkr5VFeCSs5)  I've seen a couple of YouTube videos, it's not a FSR but does look to be some sort of unmaintained public road.  Not very long though.  It also shows up as Glore Road.  It's to the west of the marked spot on the map.

A JKU has already lockers in both differentials and the disconnecting sway bar, so you are better prepared that a JKU non-Rubicon. But I agree you should avoid the more difficult obstacles.

Cue the dumb newbie questions:

Start time?
Meeting location?

Recommended best place/person to get a crash course in GMRS radios? Looking to "buy once, cry once" rather than just purchase a cheapie to make this ride. Scanned the cb subforum, and it seems like some members have settled in on a couple of favorites through trial and error. Shamelessly looking to benefit from that knowledge.

For any of the newer poeple that drive new, newish, stock jeeps this is the perfect ride for y'all to get out on. Also, if you have wives, husbands, girlfriends, boyfriends or kids that normally don't like camping and or the rough scary trails this would also be a good ride for them as well. It's the perfect opportunity to see the North GA scenery.

It's supposed to rain most of the week. Forecast has changed a couple of times as to whether it'll rain on Saturday or not. As of 5 minutes ago, it is.

I saw it was posted on Facebook so I suspect it will be a rain or shine log jam. Those Forest Service roads are great even in the rain. I can remember many times driving my 2wd Explorer and my Dad's Station Wagon, through muddy roads up there, just stay on the road. Trails are for hikers and bears.

Would this happen to be an open ride? Meaning I could potentially bring along a buddy in his Toyota?

I live in Milton and the wife and I are staying in Ellijay Saturday night, so I'm in unless the whole thing is called off.

Waiting to see what pans out with the weather. If we are a go, I have a friend that would like to come along with a stock JL.

Another newbie question:

Any realistic chance that the water levels will be high enough to enter the cab on a stock JLU Rubicon?

If you’re referring strictly to Charlie’s Creek. The amount of rainfall could increase the water flow but it’s doubtful that it will be high enough to enter the cab. As long as the doors are shut and the air-conditioning is on to pressurize the interior it should keep out any water that may come up to the door. But it’s very rare if you’re moving forward for the water to come inside the vehicle create a bit of a week in front of it. Unless it really really deep.

So I’ve been told.

Ok so it's been probably 5 or 6 years since I've been through that trail. I know how to get there off Persimmon Rd. I don't remember where it comes out or how to go in from the other end.

Who has been numerous times or knows it better and may want to lead?

Give me a few to get back to the house. I’ll take a look at the forestry service map.

From Persimmon Rd the crossing at Talullah River is a diagonal up river to the right. Go Slow and don't stop in the middle, make sure your in 4WD before your in the river. I'd lead but I will be installing  a Thermostat in the Jeep tomorrow. It's an easy drive.

Weather station in the area.  I've checked a few, all over an inch of rain for the week so far.  I guess like DK said it'll make it interesting.

Yes I know exactly where the river crossing is. I used to trout fish that whole section up there. I just haven't went thru that trail in at least 6 years. You know back when you could go down that section on the left that had the hill climb everyone used to do. That lead to a lot of the signage about stay on the main trail.

Not sure which way y’all are coming up from Helen , if you are coming up 197, turn left, go 2.5 miles to FS RD 163 ( popcorn trail) ) on left ( there is no sign)  this will take you popcorn rd , turn left , this will take you to plum orchard , then to persimion ( turn left)  then to Charlie’s creek.
If you are just doing Charlie’s, 163 is a nice add on.
There is on rutted our spot going downhill, just tell the newbies to straddle the ruts.

The wife, pup and I are in for sure. She’s coming off a late shift. So, I’ll have my jet boil on hand to boil water for instant coffee.
Should anyone want some, bring your favorite instant flavor and a little water.
