Post by: Matt on June 29, 2008, 12:34:40 PM
Well, me and Jessica made it back about 10:30 last night. Left just in time. That storm was looking pretty intense. Hopefully you guys didnt get too wet. We had a blast. Great turn out, 14 rigs. Good eats, good people and some good riding. Cant beat that. Definitely had some carnage...but I will let those people tell those stories. I got out with a little rim rash. Will post what pics I have soon. Nice meeting the new guys and good seeing the ususals...We had a blast.

Who had the carnage?  Was it broken parts, or just some beat up body panels?

1 broken axle - Seth
1 busted radiator - Jud
2 rockers damaged (1 bad) - Tony
1 door damaged - Tony
1 broken mirror - Mike
1 axle clunking - Will

There may be more, but I cant remember.

We were all back at the cabin when it started raining. The last food had just been taken of the grill when the bottom fell out.  It rained a lot through the night, enough to cancel my morning ride. The cook out was awesome!  Thanks to everyone that contributed.

I found it before I left this morning. The rear sway bar link popped over the bushings. The bushing with bolt and washer was still attached to the frame, but the link was pulled off of it. After coming over a few of the washouts it took out one of my exhaust hangers. I got the bushing back in the link and bolting down, and the exhaust will be a quick fix when we get back to the shop.

Had an absolute blast guys! The wheeling, scenery, food, and company was top notch! You can't ask for a much better weekend. We should have a lot more good pictures flowing in soon. Thanks to everybody for making it possible.

Did we get any video of that fussball game...  :D

You need to protect everything around your rear axle, haha. You better be coming to River Rock this weekend!

I'm back and had an absolute awesome time. Even with the carnage, which we expertly handled I might add, I think everybody had big fun. You guys that missed this ride are going to be kicking yourself in the pants when all of the pictures and stories start rolling in.

I'll be adding pictures from my camera in the morning. I'm being hovered over right now.

Another vote for an awesome time here.

Had to go into Murphy to get gas and then go back out through trail one but it only took me 2 hours to get from the trail head on the TN side back to Knoxville, so I was excited about that.

I will get some pictures up soon.

By the way, I just got back into LaGrange. It's 11:30. I sat, with the Jeep off, on I-85, for over 2 hours. Really bad wreck. Everyone got out of their cars and we were just hanging out. I told this one trucker about our trip. He really liked the Jeep. Cool story, huh?

We saw a bunch of jeeps at the cabin when we went by Sunday morning. We went up schoolbus...it was a struggle...not really muddy from the rain but so washed out the bottom was a "V"  shape. Helicopter was different too.  Guard rail was much the same and I didnt have any better luck getting up it. It'll be interesting to see if the trails get closed first from overuse/erosion or people get bored with that being the only really challenging section of tellico left open and they stop coming.

We wound up with lots of carage.
3 xj tail lights
1 xj header panel
1 exhaust bent (mine)
1 tire off bead (mine)
1 tire side wall punctured
1 front ujoint broken
1 front axle shaft broken
1 battery failure
1 pretty new superwinch breaking in half (mine)
2 xj quarter panels
1 xj drag link bent (mine)
1 xj A pilar damage w/ windshield broken
1 xj rocker panel damaged so bad the door sill plate popped up
1 toyota truck w/ fender, door, cab damage from sliding on its side down the V shaped rock between schoolbus and helicopter.

the punctured side wall was on the bedless yota...we fixed it with rope from an old coaches whistle, black rtv, and a flat head screw driver...made our own tire plugs and shoved 2 of them in the hole...aired it back up to 20 psi and it wasnt leaking by the time we got back to the pay station.

Ben and I were the only ones that made it Thursday night. We had a great time drinking beer and shooting the shit. The next morning, we woke up with the first of three hangovers. A big thanks to Doug for letting us crash in his cabin.

Friday morning we moved down to the big house and waited for others to arrive. Hangovers were gone by the time people rolled in. Everybody unloaded and we headed out for our first ride. I guess we had about seven rigs for this ride. We headed up trail 4 to Fains Ford to eat lunch. We had a good time hanging out at the creek then a few of us climbed the ledge on the other side. We came back trail 5 to trail one and back to the cabin. After we got back it dumped rain for almost an hour. This was the first strategically placed rain shower. Others trickled in throughout the day as we hung out telling more lies. About 9:00 we headed out for our night ride. We did the same route as earlier in the day only in reverse. Once again a few of us climbed the ledge. I couldn't make the harder spot the I took earlier in the day because of the damp conditions so I climbed a little easier spot. It was still fun though. We got back to the cabin and started round two of the cold stuff. Great fun and Juan and I were the last two standing.

Saturday morning we slept in until Tony let Scout out of my Jeep and he made his way into the cabin. Tony must have closed the door without knowing he was in there and then started calling for him from outside and Scout had to let him know he was trapped. He let out a few big dog barks and everybody was up then. Karma to Scout for making sure we didn't sleep all day. We all chipped in to make breakfast, drank some coffee, ate some Advil, and soon hangover number two was gone. We lined up in the road for our big run and were waiting for a couple of stragglers as a truck with an ATV trailered pulled up behind us. I was in the rear and called on the radio for a path to be cleared. I walked back to let the guy know we were moving over for him when I realized it was the Ranger. He was super nice and asked how many we had in our group. I told him about 15 and he said have a good time and moved on past. Everybody moved over pretty quick when I said let "THE MAN" through. We had a few groups in front of us and everybody had the same idea about their run for the day. It was a bit of a traffic jam at first, but we all wanted to do School Bus since it will likely be closed before we can ride Tellico again.

At the turnoff for School Bus, a few of the smaller rigs opted to continue around Trail 3 and up Pinch Rock. The plan was to meet us at the top of Helicopter Pad. This was where the first mishap occurred. Seth busted an axle on his WJ on the last part of Pinch Rock. As they said on the radio, he was in a pickle. They didn't have a winch in the group but finally got him turned around and Brian followed him out in his JK Rubi. We met up with the remaining member of the smaller group and some of us played on Helicopter Pad. Helicopter Pad was a big hit, but also punched back pretty hard. Chris went first in his XJ and as usual made it look easy. Mike was next in his TJ. Will jinxed him when he asked if he was still running stock control arms with his lift. As he climbed the big part his rear axle came forward and his control arms let it flex past the preferred point. Chris winched him up and all was well.

Next was my turn. I decided to take a little different line than most and Will and company rode with me. It was a fun ride and when I flew the front tire about 4 feet in the air which I anticipated Will almost soiled my back seat. Of course he really squirmed when I set the front down and put us in a big off camber to the drivers side which he happened to be on. As I approached the main ledge, I kept the   wheels moving to slide into the position I wanted to attack the ledge at. As I slid towards the bank I tweaked my mirror a bit because I didn't flip it it. Once in position, I made it up pretty easy and it was Jud's turn. Jud struggled a bit because his front locker wouldn't cooperate. When he got to the top, we realized he had bigger problems. One of his motor mounts was busted and the fan put a hole in his radiator. It was leaking pretty good and we still had to go down Guardrail.

A few of us had just seen Xtreme 4x4 and learned how to do a field repair on a radiator. It took us a couple of hours and most of the group headed back to prepare dinner. By the time we cut and rolled the bad veins in the radiator, he had a hole you could put your fist through. Some guy in an XJ gave us a little bit of stop leak which we used to stop the very small trickle that was left. By the time he got back there were no leaks and he never went over 210 degrees. The repair worked awesome and we plan to send pictures and a story into Xtreme 4x4.

On the way out, Will lost a bolt in his front Track bar. We were able to find the bolt and he dug up a new nut and we were back under way. I was riding Tail gunner and Mark stopped because he couldn't find his camera. He never did find it, but that's when I noticed that my dumb ass left my tools on the trail where we fixed Will. I headed back and got them and out we came. When we got back to the cabin dinner was ready and the beer was cold.

We had so much fun Saturday night that it should have been illegal. There was an old foosball table out there and I don't think I've laughed so hard in years. The table was worn out and the rods with the players attached to them would pop out the top like a skewer. A few times people almost lost some of their manhood. Jennifer decided that mayonnaise would work as a good lubricant for the table. Not really a wise idea, but it did work for a great laugh.

Sunday we woke up and nursed hangover number three, the worst one of the weekend. Everybody chipped in and cleaned up. We loaded up and a few of us went to Crawford's for free air and to use there RTI Ramp. Ben, Will and I followed each other back to Winder and Ben took us back through the mountains on some of the Forrest Service roads. I took a bunch of pictures on this trail but they all turned out blurry because of the washboards. This was a beautiful 20 mile or so ride, but was definitely a filling shaker with tires aired up. We ate lunch by the creek and finally separated at Winder.

I have to say, this trip was the most fun I've had in years. Thanks to everybody for making it a memorable time.

He wasn't riding with us, just breaking everything left and right in front of us. The last time we saw them they were playing on guardrail. He was bragging about it being a $500 rig. I hope he decides to come back and get it...

That was a blast again.  I was afraid it could not be more fun than last year, but it was!

Looking back it was fun getting my broken heap off Pinch Rock with 2 WD but it was a little nerve racking at the time.  Glad I got out of there ok.  Oh and my axle shaft is on the wall at the Grand Cherokee cabin!

My pics and Mike's are uploading to PhotoBucket as I type.

Absolutely you would be fine on 32's. I ran them out there and RooB is still running them, and that's with a longer wheel base. I personally would go with 33x12.50's just to get the extra width unless you're talking about picking up some Rubi tires. Either way, you'll be fine with the shorter wheel base.
Title: Re: Back from Tellico (Pics)
Post by: Matt on July 01, 2008, 03:30:06 PM
Might have a little trouble around pinch rock completely open with 32s. I would have at least one locker. But you do have a winch so I think you would be fine were ever.

not yet. we got one and it is of you.

What happen to the other ones?

And Jerm, you'd be fine on some aggressive 32"s. Like Matt said, Pinch Rock would of been your only problem, but you got a winch. Add the Aussie like you want, and you'd be good to go.

Jerm, you will be fine on that size. Considering Mark drove that CJ up everything we di with stock suspension and a somewhat street tire! I was really impressed with that thing!

Just wanted to give everybody an update on Scout. Sunday morning I examined his foot really well, and found a raw area that he had been licking. There was an area between his toes that looked like it had a couple of thorns, kind of looked like cactus spikes. I wasn't sure it wasn't hair, but I pulled them out and he hasn't limped since. Poor fella would have had a lot better time if I could have found them earlier.

Never been bit by one, but I think you would know if it was a brown recluse. I got a few pretty toxic bites, but thankfully only a few. I'm not sure exactly what those bugs at the cabin were. Tellico is way above the Nat Line and those weren't like the nats in Florida. Trust me I know about nats. These were more like miniature misquitos packed with toxic venom.

Aww, Metro can't handle the country. Make sure to bring your sun screen and bug spray next time. Down in South Georgia we wrastle gators and rope hogs with rat'lers.  :P

That bite is probably a chigger. I have quite a few on me. Put nail polish remover on it and it will kill it off. Home remedies. Yeah, those nats were annoying. Really bad up on helicopter pad. 3 hours of swatting with them can get old.

I haven't messed with my axle yet, that rag seems to be holding the diff fluid in just fine.  Although my jeep drives so much better in 2wd that I decided to hit a junkyard up yesterday for a 242 transfer case, rear drive shaft, and shifter assembly so that I could run in 2wd whenever I want when I get my axle back in.  For $375 I got a 242 tranfer case, a rear drive shaft (slightly shorter than mine), and the shifter assembly.  Now I will have 2wd, 4 part time, 4 full time, and 4 low instead of just 4 full time and 4 low.

I want to get alloys but only Iron rock has them for the WJ and they are $800 for a pair.  I can probably find a JK front axle for close to that at a junkyard if I keep my eyes open.  I am also trying to find who might have a lifetime warranty that I could utilize in case of future breakage.

I did get my bumper cover back on  ;D

Why did the fan hit it?

He worked it over pretty good on helicopter pad.  A broken motor mount was part of the cause.

Yea, when the XJ was in a bind, you can hear a grinding sound and as you know there are lots of sounds while wheelin.  I just wrote it off as the front locker is eating its self or something since it didnt work most of the time.  So on helicopter pad I was pounding on it and after the climb there was coolant everywhere.  Motor mount broken pretty good.  I made it out with what you see in the picture and no over heating.  Im thinking about getting this radiator off ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-88-89-90-91-92-93-94-95-96-97-01-Cherokee-Radiator_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33602QQihZ025QQitemZ380042623785QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-88-89-90-91-92-93-94-95-96-97-01-Cherokee-Radiator_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33602QQihZ025QQitemZ380042623785QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)
Any one know of a reasion NOT to get this?
