Was there yesterday.  Had to go move the boat ... afraid the cover would tear under the weight of the snow.  First year I've had it outside and wtf!  Nevr snows there.

Taking down 60 pines before the garage can go up.  Will have a Barn Raising Pig Smoking Party.

I work at The Weather Channel and waiting on one of my employees to return from the 9:30 meteorologist meeting to fill us in.  I have nothing to do with weather.  I'm in IT and run the Technical Operations Center that handles all Tier 1 events.

They are letting Whitfield county schools go early too.

Flurries outside my office window. How will I ever make it home on just 36 inch TSL's and air lockers. Maybe I can use the winch to pull me through the snow drifts.

I have to go pick someone up.  Am i better taking the jeep which is locked front and rear (auto lockers), the 2wd truck, or a front wheel drive small car?  Roads are snow with a lot of ice.

It took me 3.75 hours to get home when it would normally have taken 45 mins if I left at the same time when snowpacolypse wasn't occurring.

I have limited interest in getting in the jeep and playing...but I do have some interest.  Kell has zero interest.

Took me 4 hours to get home. I got the Bremen and got off 20 fine going down 27 to go home and encountered a hill no one wanted to go down. People were literally just siting in the road watching it snow. Phone died so I parked the car at a pawn shop off the highway and walked a hair over 5 miles home on back roads and what not. Pirate 4x4 middle finger emoji to you storm.

Carrollton has about 3" of snow and it keeps coming.
Title: Re:
Post by: clark123456 on January 28, 2014, 05:06:18 PM
Mine was 30 mins to about 5 miles from my home and then a bit over 3 hours to cover the last 5 miles.  I had a full tank of gas, a Pandora Taylor Swift station, and my cell phone...so I decided to suffer through the ride.

Those who have selectable lockers be vary careful about driving with them on. Tires can travel different speeds causing a lot of over and under steer which will cause you to wreck quickly.
I prefer drive my f250 because of the pure weight. A lot longer before I slide or loose traction.

Stay safe out.

That's a Benz after it took out a fire hydrant. The pressure of the water gushing under the car created a sink hole and that baby disappeared. Water will be off for the next week they're saying.  That road was a mess.

In everyone's defense the Nat'l weather service in there infinite wisdom told everyone that there would only be a "dusting" north of atlanta. BS on that! LOL

Took the wife out to eat for her birthday. I decided to take a stroll through town to admire the snow, as we come around the turn leaving town, we spotted some blue lights. We proceeded to check it out and found a young kid was way off the road and through a fence. The bed was destroyed. We asked if they needed some help, of course they did, so I just turned around and went into the ravine after him. Turns out he was hit by an oncoming tractor trailer that was sliding in his lane. The driver of said semi didn't even stop to see if he killed anyone. Hit & run. After 15 minutes I had all the barbed wire cut off his axle, broke off the rest of his bumper that was hung up, and drug him back up the hill. Nothing like being prepared. Of course compensation was offered but I had to refuse, I had too much fun doing it ;)

I drove out exploring a while ago and it was like a scene from walking dead. Cars in ditches and on side of road and they were all abandoned so I couldn't even help out with some recovery. There was a Honda nose first in a ditch and rear sitting 3-4 feet in the air

Left work at 1130 today, stopped for the night, going to drive the rest of the way home to canton in the morning. The roads weren't that bad but it was serious carmegeddon out there! The Prius did awesome on the ice though, no but seriously I know that sounds like a joke.

I left work at 1, got home at 11.

Confession: like an idiot I drove the Leaf to work, just wasn't thinking. Had to charge back up at Nissan in Marietta but it rocked the icy roads. Aired down the front tires and it pulled every hill.

Passed an FJ on the side of the road...

The part of this storm that I don't understand is that so many people that did not have to be out there, were clogging up the roads for people that did have to get home.  My buddy left work (Powers Ferry/285) and it took him 8+ hours to get home to Kennesaw.  His wife was home safe with the kids.  I told him to stay put and he said "i'd rather be in my car than the office".  Really?  I'd bet if the people that could/should have stayed put, did, drive times for those that needed to be some place would have been cut by more than half.

Yep! Prius made an excellent ice vehicle as well, I aired down too and the combination of the weight of the hybrid system on the front end and the electric motor make it super easy to put torque to the ground without breaking the tires loose made climbing hills easy. Ended up driving around a lot of SUVs with people who didn't understand the concept of finesse driving last night.

What a mess!
3-4 days/week I work in Buford.  I live in Atlanta.  I was in Buford yesterday and started for home at 4:15p.  I was in my A6, which is AWD, but still a sedan on radials.  I saw unbelievable amounts of stupidity on the roads.  I saw the reports of the connecter in grid lock, so I headed across on 285E toward I-20.  It was bad.  I saw several spin outs.  Each one would bring traffic to a stop.  At about Memorial drive traffic was stop and go.  Each time the traffic would stop cars and big trucks would just slide sideways.  This is all happening in slow motion.  Surreal, that a 18 wheeler would just be moving laterally from a dead stop.  At this point a 18 wheeler just slowly slid sideways and gathered up 2 other cars and pinched them up against the median wall.  Traffic stopped and people were walking around.  I knew this was my last chance.  If I didn't get out now, I would likely be spending the night in my car.  I snaked my way through a dozen cars, and around the ass end of the jackknifed truck.  I was the only one.  It was eerie being the only car on 285 after that.  No one in front or behind.
(http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/s380/htflds/photo-2_zps9196f454.jpg) (http://s1048.photobucket.com/user/htflds/media/photo-2_zps9196f454.jpg.html)

It took about 2 hours.  Nothing compared to what many of you have gone through.
Incredibly frustrating that 2" of snow can completely paralyze a major city.  The incompetence of Atlanta never ceases to amaze.
I hope you all are safe and sound by now.

Steve I drove a truck for 35 years and you would not believe how stupid people can be in weather like that and most of the time it's their impatience that causes 90% of the problems. Back during the 90's atlanta had a ice storm hit and I got stuck on the flyover bridge at 285 and 85 one afternoon. I'm in my 97 Kenworth and tanker with Jet -A fuel on board headed to Cherry Point, N.C. Marine base. I've been sitting still for about a hour when this woman comes flying up behind me, I'm watching her in the mirror, and she nails me in the rear. I start sliding forward and and at a angle, the slosh from the fuel in the tanker rolls forward and hits the nose of the tanker which was like getting hit again at speed. Pushes me into two small cars and we slide towards the guard rail and we're picking up speed. The two cars scoot around the rear or a box truck and I hit the box truck and jack knife and the fuel pushes me against the guard rail all on top of that high bridge going north on 85.
This woman had the gall to sue me for sitting still on the hiway and damaging her car.......lol
She lost

I left work yesterday at 2:00pm in Canton.....Highway 20 looked like a parking lot
so I try Hwy 5.......after moving 3 or 4 miles in an hour I turn around and get on
575 to cut through Ball Ground and take 372 to 369......after a couple of hours and
a hill that had a tractor trailers stuck on it and everyone who tried to get around it
wound up in the ditch.....turned around called my wife who was already home to get
a hotel room.....all book in Canton, got one in Jasper. Left there at 10am this morning
and every road was still solid white. Came across on Hwy 53 and it was solid white until
I got to Dawson County then you could tell they had scraped and treated their roads...
So finally home and it don't look bad here around 400 or the Price road area.

Have to admit my little Patriot 4x4 didn't spin a bit.....

"If you have four wheels, you want to use them. This sport utility vehicle took to the sidewalk to get around traffic near Perimeter Mall on Tuesday afternoon. Traffic on most major roads around the mall remained gridlocked well past dark."

I have been out most of the day helping people out of ditches. problem is so many people have abandoned their rigs, there is no way to help. I definitely enjoyed a few open parking lots and doing some drifting. I drove my dad down to his office and came back 400N and the Holcomb bridge exit was scary looking there was so many vehicles abandoned. The national guard was out there helping people.

Nice!  Do you work down by the Galleria area?  I'm over there in one of the buildings.

No. I was just there pulling out my sister in laws car. The interchange at 41 and 285 was a hot mess, big time.

That whole area was a mess.  My wife had been in traffic for 11 hours and then i realized that if she could get to 75 south exit, my office is right there.  2 hours later she told me they are about to get on the 75 south exit...two mins later, they were in my office!  No issues getting home...dodging the abandoned cars was the hardest part.

I got the pleasure of picking up my wife and 1 year old from two separate locations...and in two trips.  Brought my camera and i am glad i did...here is the result.  The one where i am sitting in the middle of I-75 at rush hour on a Wednesday morning is (imho) the craziest one.  The comments are in the album here

I've got some quick videos too. I wish I would have taken more pics. Saw some really crazy stuff. Gave a few people rides, picked up some friends kids from school, ask fun after the initial traffic cluster

Not one of my videos. I'm a little disappointed in myself actually. I didn't even grab a camera the whole time I was driving around in it! Anyway, here's a pretty funny vid I found.

The jackass that made that video must not have sat in his car for 10 or 12 hours...or more for some.
