Title: pet thread
Post by: GusaGus on October 26, 2009, 06:04:24 PM
saw a few pets either posted or in person, so i thought i would make a thread for all the animal owners here.

guess i should add that the top one is a blood hound puppy (6 months 80lbs), middle is a basset hound, and the bottom is a mutt

I don't have any current pets, but my last pet was my Great Dane, Cargo. He was probably the coolest dog I've ever owned. As soon as I'm no longer in an apartment I plan on getting another one. Had to give him away when I moved out, because shortly after my parent's decided to downsize. *tear*

Our cocker spaniel, Bogey. He's around 7 years old, we got him from my ex-brother-in-law when he decided to be a dumbass and become my ex-brother-in-law.  ::)

Bogey is the most energetic dog I've ever seen. No, really. He does not stop and that's the only reason I haven't brought him on a ride. About 4 months ago he was riding in the bed of the truck while we were pulling the horse trailer and he jumped out to chase a cat while we were running 30-45ish. I saw him land in the road, and we looked all over the place and couldn't find him. We came home and he was sitting on the front porch with a front leg danglin'. Vet says he'll never use the leg again, but the good news is he apparently fried the nerve so he can't feel it. Vet recommended we cut it off, but wouldn't hurt to keep it tied up as long as we change the wraps and clean him regularly. He can still outrun me with a front leg tied to his chest  :D  He's starting to get old so my mom made me promise I would make a harness and wheel for him in a year or two  ::) Pics of that when it's done! lol

Here's Bogey (Don't have any of the busted leg) and the only pic of the horses I have at school.

Thats weird Will, my parent's have a dog named Bogey with a bum front leg too. He was born with no knee and no toes on one leg.

Sunny used to jump out of the window of the Jeep if I was passing near the dog park and run there by herself. I think she hurt herself a few times doing it but never let on that she was actually hurt.

They're both named Bogey and play with the same handicap!  ;D Is your dad a bad golfer but insists that the dog be called "Birdie" when he's around?  :hlp

Backyard breeders at my old job were going to take this little guy and his litter mates to the pound because they couldn't sell them.  ~>} I convinced them to give him to me and some others at work took the other pups. He is a... unique dog!  {hardlaugh}

Was your Great Dane all black? Or any white spots on him?

Cargo (mine, pictured above) was completely jet black, no white chest or toes, nothing. My vet said that's pretty rare, so I'm just curious.

Is the new guy (last pic) a Boxer puppy? He's a good looking pup

He had a tiny white speckled spot on his chest, rest of him was black. That is rare to get a solid color, it's one sign of a good breeding program. My parents bred them for many years, if you have questions feel free to ask.

Thanks and the puppy is a boxer. I call him my mini boxer. He's about 11 months now and only 40lbs.

I got to thinking about that last night, you may want to finish building it down near where you are putting it, if not you may need a forklift to move it.

I have a little different taste in pets...

This is Tilly.  She is a 75lb African Sulcata Tortoise.  She will eventually be over 125lbs and the size of a small wheelbarrow.

Along with Tilly we have 3 other Tortoises.. a Redfoot, a Hermans, and a Russian..all waaay smaller than the big girl.  Also have an Alligator Snapping Turtle that is mean as hell.

Oh yeah... a cool ass dog too.  Sam my Miniature Schnauzer.. he's smarter than most humans I know.

Our old Boxer named Buddy is in the Wagoneer.  He was a very cool dog.  His was a long story, but the short of it is that we rescued him with a broken hip.  He never complained and recovered from the surgery to run several races with me.

Our Boston Terrier was frantic when Buddy passed away so we got her a new play pal.  This is Sherman.  Lola was larger than Sherman for exactly two days.  I never was a small dog person, but Lola won me over because she is a large dog in a 15 lb. body.

Here are mine...

This is Jewels and Goliath.  These were taken when we first got Goliath (that's why Jewels isn't leaving him alone).

Jewels is an Lhasa Apso.  We've had her for 12 years now.  She's starting to get cateracts.  She is a PITA, but she is a good dog too.

Goliath was a Great Dane rescue dog.  He was very malnourished as you can see.  I could never understand why anyone could treat him this way, he was one of the best dogs I ever had.  We tried everything we could to get him healthy including weekly visits to the vet, but it must have been too little too late.  He died one night in his sleep about six months after we got him.

And the Horses..

This is my daughters horse, Buddy, a mutt Quarter Horse.  We looked at many horses before him.  He was very short and stout.  In fact Terri (my wife) did not want to buy him.  She thought the price was too high.  But, my daughter fell in love with him the minute she rode him (bareback) when we first looked at him.  So I convinced Terri that he would probably best the best horse for Nikki.

He developed cancer and we had to put him down.  A very bad day for my daughter (and Terri and I).

Mutts are the best sometimes.

As far as breeds, hard to beat a small lab for the family that loves the outdoors and treats the dog like part of the family.  My wife lets ours sleep on my pillow when Im gone.

Shoot even when I'm home the little dog will be in or on the bed, but when I'm gone the others usually sneak on the bed! I have always thought labs are the best all around family dog!

He is pretty docile. We feed him frozen mice which helps keep him less aggressive.  Very cool pet and super easy to care for!

Not many things creep me out... but snakes are on the tip top of my list... especially when they get in my house!!! We had about 5 Snakes in the house this summer...

When I was a child, my dad had boa constrictors and they would get into the pool every now and than... We would jump in the middle of night to have them come curl up on your arms/legs not attacking but looking for safety. that is 99% of the reason why I dont like snakes to this day.

You need to throw out some mothballs around the out side of your house.Just toss them around the wood line at your house and it will keep the snakes away!

Grats, My dog loves riding in my Jeep.  I got a cargo net to go around the sides and back so when she is in the back she can run around (no fear of jumping out) stick her noise out and snifffffff  away..

they love that kind of stuff.   she currently is still not really people friendly so im working with her , not sure how long it will take but im itching to bring her.

Horrible shedders. Two times a year are the worst where it falls out I'm clumps. They are very dominant and territorial. Mine basically listens to me only
