Title: Jeep EVENT..
Post by: urdaddyjeep on March 18, 2010, 11:59:59 PM
This is a feeler thread to see just how many of you would make it out to help out some wounded warriors... I am in the pre-planning stage of this and need to know what kind of turn out I would get... this is what I am thinking

Having a Jeep show/Ride for the Wounded Warriors here at Ft Gordon. 20bucks gets your heep in... the wounded guys will have a judging party that will go around and look at each rig... some kind of gift will be given out to those that place in the judging.. like best in show... ugliest.,.. dirtest... stuff like that... there will be a grill going and for a very small fee you can eat... then after the show we take the guys and girls for a ride around town and back to post.. those of them that get the ok from their doc will go out on some of the trails on post(still have to get ok from post first)
all monies raised will go to the wounded warriors and the fisher house....

now that you know the what... i know you want to know when.... well I was thinking either the weekend before Jeep Beach or the weekend after.... why so far out you ask... cause nothing in the Army moves very fast... main reason is this... the wounded guys need to be seen by the doc and get the ok before they do anything like 4wheelin cause it could set back the time table on their rehab..we dont want that to happen.. and that takes time... also it takes time for this post to say ok to anything... and having a SSG pushing it along doesnt help it much... that is why i talked to a Major today about it.. maybe he can push it through...
but I need a no BS on if  you can make it or not.....

Let me run it by my crew and I will see how many Jeeps we can muster.  Let me know if you are in fact changing the May 8th date.  Scheduling is critical right now.  If everything lines up correctly we should be able to bring four Jeeps for sure and a few more maybes.

I would like to help but I am committed to Jeep Beach again this year. I would call my buddy Lee ( the guy who organized that fisher house event at RR we went to ) to help you drive more people in but he will also be at Jeep Beach, as will everyone he would normally drive in to your event.
If the dates change, let me know.

it was never the same weekend as Jeep Beach.. too many people are going there... so therefore it has to be the 8th of May.... now the Army may have it on the 7th... but as of right now... it is May 8...

so whos all in.. or is it just going to be 4 jeeps there..

What's the final plan Mike, are you riding trails on base, or going riding around town. I'm still trying to work this out.

I have posted it on Wheelers for the Wounded.org. I had given the leader a heads up over there that you were trying to pull this event together, and he was going to let some of his active duty jeepers know.

I will also send a message to some contacts I have within the VA and ask that they let their VA members know in Atlanta/elsewhere in the SE region/VISN 7 to see what they can drum up as well.  If I hear back from anyone I will let you know.

ok this event might be in Thompson.... I will know more this week. There is an event that I might have to piggie back off of...

but I still think that it sucks that out of the hundreds of members that GATR has there are only 4 people saying that they are coming to support the soliders that were wounded in combat. But if I said that there was a ride at Tellico that weekend there would be 50 of you saying that you were going... Times are tough.. I got that.. but I just dont get what the problem is.. I put this out long time ago...

Where would you be doing it @ Thompson? That used to be a hole in the wall.

Mike, I admire your intentions but to be honest, this event didn't seem solid.
It has been full of maybes, not sures and I will know more laters from the start...... right up to your last post .

I think everyone can appreciate your good intentions and would like to participate in an event to help Vets but I still have no clue WTF would be going on at this event if I drove 4 hours to be there or IF it would even be a go if I had taken off work.

If I was within an hour away, I would go and see how it plays out but I live too far to wing it on this one sorry bro.

To ask people to commit to an event that they can't get solid info on is tough, don't take it personally I'm just saying.

I just thought you might want to consider that before going off on everyone here. Then again, I could be the only one that feels this way.

Tony I understand what you are talking about but we are talking about the Army.. I need to line the ducks up and give it to them in package form... this isnt a ride where if noone shows that it isnt that big of a deal. I needed numbers to give to the Army.. I cant go to them and say yea i might have 5 or 50 jeeps there.. there is legal issues that have to be look at as well.. then the WTU/WTB has to pass it through their chain of command as well... for all of you that work for big companies you know what I am talking about.. or have ever served you know shit dont happen unless all the bosses have their say... also if you go back i asked and tried to put in a deadline to see who could spare their time and money to support this event. And I tried to explain the who, what, where, when, and why.. I am sorry that I didnt break it down Marine style.. it wont happen again..

Look I know when ever I try to put something on and ask GATR for support I may get a few maybes and 1 or 2 people telling me that they will be there...

Its all good... i know who I can ask for support and who I cant.. I never asked anyone to drive 4 hrs for anything.... oh wait how far is Tellico???

But its all good.. no worries....

MikeD,

We got our pee-pee's spanked for name dropping and I will obey the powers at be and not do it again. But calling like we see it here....if this was a Tellico event people would be jumping through their ass to make it. PERIOD! Nobody here is non-patriotic. We get that! But a pattern is starting to show here on these rides. There is a bunch of lip-service and the same people showing up to them. I know how chain of commands work and, I have been in that chain ,to say I know where your coming from. Your intent is great but let this be a lesson to you, me and whomever tries to plan stuff. Its not easy! We can blame the economy, family and deployments...whatever. Bottom-line your not going to get the response you want or turnout for this event. The effort and war itself are on the back burner and it sucks people have lost friends and loved ones in both theaters and nobody really cares. I was asked WTF on another website about this and all I said is that MikeD will walk away mad after this one. He will be greeted with "lip-service patriotism" and thats about it! No name dropping but thats the bottom-line.

Never been to Tellico so I wouldn't know, but I was willing to drive 4 hours or whatever to help out if the event would have sounded more solid.
The ride you and I did at River Rock was to benefit Vets, remember?

Anyway, I wasn't posting to bust your balls, I know dealing with commands is a PITA.

All I was saying was that MAYBE people are more likely to show up to other events because they are solid and well layed out. " Show up here, at this time, on this day and we will be doing this."

If you want to put together another ride to benefit Vets but without Big A involved I will help and attend.  I think you might get a better turnout without all the hassle of Big A.

Unfortunately it seems it will not happen, too bad... If I can help let me know. One thing I can say is you need to give yourself and others more leadtime for planning etc.I dont know what its like there wheeling wise, but what most states do is plan a few fundraising events, weather at 4x4 shops at military events etc. contact vendors and get goodies to raffle, to giveaway etc. solicit donations and then hold a main event where there is a weekend that said clubs volunteer and take wounded warriors, their family out wheeling, camping , eating etc. for the weekend all at NO cost to warrior.. It is the 4 wheel drive communities way of saying THANK YOU..........................

Sorry to hear it canceled Mike, I would be there if I didn't have finals that day. If you are still interested in putting on a car show or something to help support wounded soldiers at some other time, I'd suggest going to the www.csramotorsports.com forum and trying to get a couple of local clubs and shops involved. Having a bunch of locals involved might be more successful & that site has a lot of Ft. Gordon dudes on it.

Mike,
I was contacted a while back by Laurie G. and she mentioned that a guy from here was trying to do something for the troops and was interested in doing WFTW that is why I asked.... And so you know WFTW is all about local, I say that because from your post I think you think otherwise. WFTW looks for host clubs to to their states events, you do your own fundraising, you run your event of wheeling, camping etc.All we say is there will be no charge for our local wounded warriors and any extra $$ you have after your event be donated locally to a military charity period....... and we had an event in GA last year 26/27 Sept. and another scheduled this year at River Rock  on 1st to 3rd October . The host club is  Matanzas Jeep Club contacts Clarence and Glen..

this is obviously a sore spot for MikeD and I know where he is coming from. I am still open myself to doing something but for me its timing. I am only home 3 months out of a year. Now, I did suggest what Fisher House does. Purchase an item and do a raffle. When I was with my old company, we purchased M4's and raffled them off for 20$ a ticket and the money went to the injured guys and their families. I guess there is many ways to approach it, but the lesson here is GATR is spaced out and most guys can't drop everything and show up for a ride. Yes, you get a bunch of lip service when you try to organize this type of event along with other club functions. This was MikeD's complaint. He has cooled off I think, and he will most likely bash me, but it is what it is! {salute}

I think thats the big problem, Mike was trying to pull together a Jeep show (kind of a niche event) while advertising to people over 2 hours away. Mike, if you have a car show for all types of vehicles and get hooked up with some of the clubs from www.csramotorsports.com I KNOW you will have a successful event. Lots of military on the site, lots of people that like to go to shows, and lots of people that support the military. If you've never organized a car show before, it's a lot of work and takes a good bit of planning.

like i said on page 1 and 2 of this thread that all money raised would have went to the WTB and the Fisher house. I wanted to do this event to help get the wounded guys out and about. I know that being there around other wounded guys can be stressful on the mind body and soul. I only wanted jeeps and then i started to open it up to other 4x4s since I wasnt getting the support i thought i would.

Lesson here is this... next time I do something like this I will call it a ride or something like that.. maybe it will get more people on board... Jimmy that was kind of a lame excuse about being 2hrs away.. we drive more then that to get to Tellico and MM.. hell how far was it to KY for that ride..

The end result is this... I will stick with doing what I do... and if there is a next time where I try and put on an event I will use other military guys to do so.. there is about 200 Jeeps riding around post here...

Glen that would be a great idea if I had the money to buy something like that to raffle off.. but again i am just a poor man trying to help out others that gave more then I did...

JP i was there last yr for the WFTW event at RR... There was only 2 of us that showed up that were in the military. Gus Gus and I... and if I am around this yr for it I will be there again..

Well put Jimmy. It was just last year when we put the show/M&G together to raise money for Operation Lightsaber. While I still think it was successful and we raised hundreds for the cause, it took a lot of effort to put on, lots of politics, advertising etc. It is very easy to brainstorm these events, but getting it all together is very hard and just does not ever work out like you have planned in your mind. If people like to ride places like Telico & RR, that is probably a good idea to listen to the mass and try to hold the event at somewhere people want to go. BTW I dont remember seeing you at the show last year? ;D

As far as helping with WFTW, GATR would love to get involved. Contact Mike D with the details.

We travel long distances to ride. 4x4 guys don't seem to be the type of guys to travel cross country for shows like guys that build hot rods, imports, muscle cars, etc will. That's why I think you need to hold a show for all types of vehicles. Your heart is in the right place and its more than definitely for a good cause, thats why I am trying to be helpful. If you want, I can get you in contact with folks around Augusta that are old hats at this stuff.
