Title: GATR Brew Thread

My new favorite beer, noticed it at Taco Mac on a work outing.

The Red Hare guys are awesome people!  They took their hobby and made it a business.  A few million dollars later and they have become very popular.  If you get a chance, go there during an open house for a tour.

We've gone to a couple of their tastings when we lived in Smyrna. Nice people, usually good music and corn hole/bocce ball for when the weather is nice!

I don't care for their IPAs to much (east coast/British), but another bad ass operation is Monday Night Brewing.  They have a phenomenal setup built for massive growth (not as big as Sweetwater) and in a pretty cool building.  It is worth going to visit for comparison reasons to other micro breweries and their Scottish ale is fantastic.

I love IPAs too.  This one for me isn't hoppy enough but I love that it's local and comes in a can.

Has anyone tried the Terrapin Recreation Ale?  It's a lower ABV so you can tip a few back and still feel good the next day.  And it comes in a can.

I haven't had that one, but I actually like 21A Bitter American...which comes in a can.  Of course, I like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale...in a can too.

That place is awesome. If you get a chance, go to the brewery on a nice sunny day. It's 10 bucks for beers, tour & the glass. They have live music on a nice patio. Yeah,  that's my favorite IPA also.

Red Hare is good stuff, and I'll jump on one as well but their IPA is not hoppy enough for me either.  They made a double black IPA that was damn good but I only had it once at some bar and have not seen it again.  They do have a very cool little joint right off Delk Road in Marietta.

Monday Night Brewing has a cool brewery as well.  Big fan of their Double IPA, Blind Pirate.

Probably my fav local brewery is Terrepin, and I'm not bias cause its in Athens.  They have have some killer brews and they rock some seriously fun brew tastings.  As mentioned the Recreation ALE is good.  My fav is the Hopzilla but that is hard to get.  My fall back is the Hopsecutioner IPA.

Terrapin are good people, too.  Their success story, at least the version I heard from Spike on a podcast, is pretty damn awesome...in an 'eff ewe' kind of way.

If you are a beer nut, take a visit to Ashville and tour their breweries and bars.  Nice college town with a lot of craft breweries and good weather ~9 months of the year.  My favorite in Ashville is Wicked Weed.  Once Sierra Nevada and Oscar Blues get going there...it will be an East Coast beer mecca.  Georgia could have done something similar, but our laws are still too restrictive and incentives are not high enough :(

I'm with you Tony.  SweetWater used to be my goto but now it's Terrapin.  I'm a fan of the Hopsecutioner as well and enjoy most of their one-off/project beers.

Have you tried the Stone Enjoy By MM-DD-YY beers yet?  They are so good but can be hard to find.  My local growler shop had some last week and it was good!

A buddy of mine keeps telling me to get up to Ashville for the beer.  He goes yearly to some big tasting they have I think in the fall.  I will have to check that out one of these days.

You might hear awesome things about Pliny the Elder.   I have had that beer a couple of times.  The first time I had it, it was the best beer I had ever had (smuggled in from California to Georgia).  Then I had it in Philly last year (only spot on the East Coast you can get it) at a bar and it was a great IIPA, but not as special as I remembered it from the first time I had it.

During that trip to Philly I had a Boneyard Nefarious...the best IIPA I have ever had in my life.

Adam let me drink one of his Zombie Dust, and it was a pretty amazing APA. Definitely best I have had. Goes great with red meat.

Pliny the Elder...Zombie Dust...I would love to try either one of those.  Will have to look for the Pliny next time I'm in Philly (which was supposed to be tonight).

I'm enjoying a Lagunitas Sucks right now in honor of this thread.

Has anyone tried the Ballast Point Sculpin IPA yet?  It's a little steep at $13.99 a sixer but it is a damn good IPA.  I just showed up to GA last month so check it out if you haven't.  They also make a nice vanilla coffee porter called Victory at Sea.

There is a cool bar in Philly called "Strange Love" (yep, named after the song) that had Pliny on tap during the national homebrew convention.  The owner is an avid beer guy, as are the bar staff.  The place is within walking distance of the indoor market/bazaar (name escapes me, but it is adjacent to the Marriott).

I had Nefarious at Monk's Cafe...worth a visit, especially if you like Belgian style beers.

I did the tourist thing and had a few beers at the City Tavern, where they serve 'traditional beers from the time of the revolution' and actors looking like founding fathers will come to your table and not break character (they speak in first person, even if you ask, "how many women did Benjamin screw in his life?").  (Our table had Benjamin Franklin.)

Since my flight was cancelled back to the ATl today, I found myself some good beer.  First I enjoyed the Bell's Hopslam which is a nice double IPA, then I had some filler beers and finished with a Dogfish Head World Wide stout which was nice and at 18%abv was freaking strong.  Now I'm back at my hotel and I have a nice chocolate peanut butter porter to finish of the night with.  Cheers!

Well many posts later, I am still drinking the Red Hare Gangway!  But I will be trying some of these.

All the snow is making me turn my thoughts to spring.  My favorite hot weather beer is Leinenkugel's summer shandy, goes down great.  Followed by the summer wheat, which has a berry flavor as well.

Yes, its good, but for orange I'd go with a more conventional ShockTop.  You gotta try the summer Shandy!  No other brand has a citrusy wheat beer like this, something special in the brew that makes it pop just right, ice cold.

I was at Red Hare tonight with my brew club.  I had their "Forbidden Fruit" which was supposedly a Saison style beer with apple cider, but the cinnamon was too powerful...IMHO.  Their "Trice Hopped" IPA was fantastic.  The tour guide was a member of my brew club, but I don't think we got anything special.  Be sure to check out Jessica Rabbit if you go there, which I recommend if you are in the Marietta area some time.

Someone brought a bottle of the Sweetwater Second Helping, which was the best beer I had all night.  There were, of course, some good and some bad homebrews.

Prior to going to Red Hare I met a few of the guys at a bar in Vinings called Muss & Turners.  Nice beer selection, not the typical crap at a bar, and very good burger cooked on a Big Green Egg.  Very expensive place (2 bottles of beer, bacon cheeseburger, and fries was ~$33.50, plus tip), but good food, good service, and good beer selection.  They have a room in the back, which you access through what appears to be an industrial freezer door, but is actually just a door to a hallway that leads to the back room.  Not really a speak-easy, but based on that concept.

That Trice Hopped IPA sounds nice.  I will have to check that out.

Muss & Turners is in my neighborhood but I have never made it over there.  I need to get off the couch and check it out for sure.

I had a Terrapin Mosaic tonight and enjoyed it.  The taste kind of reminded me of tea that was hopped and in beer form.

Not beer related:  There is a Southern cooking place near M&T that is pretty damn good too.  I have only been there once, since it isn't in my part of town, but I recall it being very good.

It's Covert Hops Society of Atlanta.  No membership fee, meetings monthly that move from place to place in the Atlanta area (mostly in the perimeter and usually at a good beer bar or brewery), group brews quarterly at someone's house or business, and usually a summer picnic and December holiday party.  Almost all communication is done through email, but they do have a Facebook presence.  Some people are passionate about beer, some are passionate about brewing, and some not much of either.

There are a lot of homebrew groups in Atlanta...some are very technically oriented and some are drinking clubs.  CHS is in between and you can make it whatever you want it to be.

While homebrewing is legal nationally (has been for a while,  thanks to president Carter and that congress), transporting homebrew has been illegal...but until recently no one cared.  Then some jack ass in the state legislature submitted a law that legalized homebrew transport for certain functions (competitions, tastings) as long as a bunch of criteria were met and local officials passed laws to allow the event and charged for the license to do it.  This has mucked up our routine since places with alcohol licensees don't want to risk a bunch of homebrewers bringing beer to their place for sampling without the proper legal stuff being done for fear of being shut down by the DOR.  The legislation got the DOR off their asses and now they are scaring businesses.  Local legislators are not all quickly creating the environment to support the new law.  :(

Had a mini growler of Victory's Hop Ticket Session IPA

Not impressed.  Very light in color and in taste.  Nowhere near enough hoppiness for me, not really sure how this could be considered an IPA but it is.  Also had a light lemony taste to it that did not enhance my experience at all.

I give it a C-

Shit, no I don't.  I give it a D.

There really is no such thing as a session IPA...unless you consider an APA a session IPA.  By definition, IPAs are high hop, high bitterness, high alcohol, and not balanced.

I like Bitter American for a good bitter session beer.

Yes I did.  It was a good spot.  I had a Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA on cask, a Green Flash Hop Odyssey black IPA and a Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald porter.  Thanks for recommending!

After Philly I went to Minneapolis, if you are ever there, check out Republic.  Awesome spot with about 50 craft brews on draft.

Next time I'm at Total Wine or Greene's I'll see if they have it, but I really don't know where to find the old school stuff.    You could always call their distributor and they can tell you where to find it.  Google can help you find the Michelob distributor for north Georgia.

Go to your liqueur store & ask them to order you a case. All stores I've gone to will normally special order anything you want. I used to do that when I was really digging the Sam Adams Cream Stout. Outside a variety pack, I couldn't find it & didn't like to buy a 12 pack for three beers.

I just finished judging the American Pale Ale category (think Sierra Nevada Pale Ale) in a home brew comp.  5 out of 10 beers I would ask for my money back at a bar; 3 out of 10 I would consume, but never order again; 2 out of 10 I may order again.  The quality of home brew has declined over the last couple of years, at least at the competition level.  It used to be the apa category was tough competition...not at this contest. :(  luckily some people bought in beer that was not entered into the comp and was good.

I really need to brew again...I was forgetting the things I needed to tell the brewers to do to correct their flaws since it has been so long since I brewed (It's been about 18 months since I brewed solo).

I have a really nice set of brew toys, but I quit drinking heavily, which negated my desire/need to brew.

It's one of the coolest breweries I have been to. If you ever get a chance ask for the beef jerkey for a snack it's fresh and one of the best! Btw when I went they had just finished bottling ZD so I decided to bring back 2 cases for my friends to enjoy. I have to say that stuff is amazing in a bottle, but so so delicious on tap. Also was able to secure a few cans of my other fav the other day Heady Topper. I know that Heady Topper is highly rated on beeradvocate, but from my experience I prefer a bottle of ZD to a can of HT.

Btw this what I picked up in SD, Ca on my honeymoon lol

I thought Sam Adams did a decent job with Rebel IPA...until I had a true west coast IPA (Lagunitas) side-by-side.   No comparison...Lagunitas has less malt profile and much more hop flavor.  Both have about the same bitterness.

I have not consumed Jekyll beer at all.

Last night I had 5 Seasons' (Prado) Hopgasm.  It was a pretty good IPA.

My go-to beers are now the ones in cans, so it's Miller Lite, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and Sweetwater IPA.

I was told that Red Hare is moving from Delk Rd to a site near the Big Chicken, due to growth.

Why cans?  You don't like bottles? Or growlers? Or kegs?
Title: Re: GATR Brew Thread
Post by: clark123456 on September 17, 2014, 10:08:28 PM
Cans have two major advantages over bottles and most growlers:  light can't get through them (light severely impacts the flavor of beer; kegs benefit from this too); portability is easier in cans.

I will buy bottled beer, but I prefer it in the can (think of European Vacation).

The Tropical session IPA was my first. It was on tap at the Roswell Growler shop.

It was tasty and was a milder IPA... Session style I suppose
Title: Re: GATR Brew Thread

the milder IPAs aren't great, in general.

I'm an ipa guy, but I have not found a really powerful one that I like a lot, recently.  Even my older "go to" favorites aren't doing it for me anymore.  I guess I'm changing and need to find a new style...maybe Belgian's will be next.

I have some homebrew on tap...I might bring a growler of it on the trip if I can get it transferred in time.  It's very old, but a stout should be fine.

Got a sampler 12 pack of Sierra Nevada:
Black IPA
Torpedo Extra IPA
Ruthless Rye IPA
Golden IPA

Sierra Nevada Black IPA up first...

I still think you are a lucky man to get such good beer all of the time, even if this one was a bust.  Black IPA is a BS category...the contradiction is in the acronym.

I have come to that conclusion as well. This is not my first disappointment with a "black" IPA.

Just had the Sierra Nevada Ruthless IPA. It was better, but still average.

Tony, compared to the Lagunitas beers, you are likely to be very disappointed with most Sierra Nevada hoppy brews.  The SN stuff is good, but not nearly the same as Lag.  Get someone to bring you some Pliny the Elder...that's a real treat.  If you get to Philly, there is a bar there that serves it on tap.  The only place east of the Mississippi that I'm aware of that carries it.

Had Pliny last time I was in Seattle. Super killer.

Having another SN Ruthless IPA. A little better., but Clark you nailed it, there IPA flavors can't hang with Lagunitas. Shoot, it can't hang with any of the local IPA's like SweetWater or terrapin. It's on par w Red Hare

If your joking, then I'm not getting it.  My first taste of Jai Alai was pretty impressive, three years ago.  Very hoppy, very balanced in the finish.  Balanced for an IPA is very odd.

Regardless, the crap I took this week should pay forward for any thing I consume in the next month.

Dude.  I don't joke about beer.

Anybody try the Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin IPA?  So damn good.

Everything else though is fair game.  I too have only had the Jai Alai but have heard good things about their other beers.  Good luck finding you some good brew.

New Osker Blues Pinner Throwback IPA is now on shelves.  Tried one tonight and it's a nice session style IPA if you like that kind of thing.

Just cracked a growler of Wild Heaven's Emergency Drinking Beer. It's a Gose style...basically unfiltered wheat beer.

Wild Heaven is in Decatur and makes some good beers but this one is a total bust.  Just really low on flavor.

The picture looks about 10 times better than the taste

Hmm, I need to try that Tropicalia sometime.

Wednesday I stopped by the Tilted Kilt near my work because traffic was so screwed up.  They had Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Sumpin' in the bottle.   I love that beer and I was amazed a bar actually stocked it.

They make a thing called a jockey box that runs coils (beer line) through ice water in an ice chest and then has a tap...works great for a portable setup.  I am pretty sure I could get one from a buddy I'm seeing tomorrow if you want to bring a keg and co2!

Sadly, no.  I haven't brewed in about 18 months thanks to work-related travel and some health issues late last year.  Had planned on firing up the brew stand now that the weather has cooled off a bit but for some reason all my disposable income is being spent elsewhere...

Sounds like there's a decent audience for good beer around these parts - may be the nudge I need to get off my arse and feed the yeasties.

Don't be intimidated by my setup, though - you can brew great beer with a lot less crap than I have accumulated.  My system has been added to and improved upon over the years ... and sometimes I wonder if "improved" is a real thing or a word I use to make myself feel better about the cash outlay. //:o//

you want to know how long it will stay fresh or how many pints are in it?

it will stay fresh under CO2, if at the proper temp, for about 2 to 3 months.

Not sure what size you think a "pony" keg is:
1/2 keg - 124 pints(16oz pour)
1/4 - 62 pints
1/6 - 42 pints

That is a very large can of worms. If you decide you don't want to get into it, let me know if you want to sell the shells. I'm planning a keezer build now.

Edit:
Realized you were taking about mini fridges, not ponies.

A mini fridge should work, but you'll have to measure height and decide how you want to distribute the beer. Most of this residential kegerators aren't much bigger than a mini fridge.

You'll need, co2, regulator, tower with faucet(s), co2 and beer lines, etc. can get pricey.

Pony key is a 1/4 of a barrel, 15.75 gallons. A keg is 1/2 of a barrel at 31.5 gallons.
Title: Re: GATR Brew Thread
Post by: Skippy on October 28, 2015, 04:57:44 PM
A barrel is 31 gallons, so a half-barrel (you're normal size big keg) is 15.5 gallons, a pony or quarter barrel is 7.75, etc.  If you can get your favorite beer(s) in a "sixtel" (sixth-barrel) you can probably get two in a dorm-sized fridge.  Or just do it right :)

As for how long it will last - depends on the style of beer.  My rule of thumb - the hoppier the beer, the shorter the life span and the darker the beer, the longer the life span.  There's exceptions to the rule, of course, but it's a good starting point.  I've had a bourbon barrel porter on tap for almost three years and it just improved as time went on.  I've had IPAs on tap that after six months just weren't worth drinking anymore.

The answer is: it depends.  If you have a dark beer (porter, stout) it will last nearly as long as you want (a year, likely more).  A hop aroma and flavored beer (think IPA) will be fresh for about 3 months, but the quality well decline over time until you hit a base where it becomes not worth drinking.   General purpose beers (BMC, Pabst, Yuengling, Fat Tire, etc) (Ambers, Browns, etc) will be good up to a year.   Barleywine, Russian Imperial Stout, etc will get better the longer they sit.

That assumes you use CO2 or nitrogen to push the beer...air/oxygen will ruin it in less than 12 hours.

Always wanted to do a kegerator but since I left college, I don't drink enough to make it worthwhile.

I ran the airport for Better Brands while I was in college.  I collected old refrigerators in great running condition, drilled the side, installed a shank, stood a co2 bottle in the corner, and had fresh beer on tap from 79 thru 85.  I moved around a bit after that and did it again in 96-2001.  We came home from a 2 week vacation and found an empty keg and 1.5's of Captain and crown missing.  The next weekend it was all replaced.  Never knew which lake neighbor did it.

One of our draft beer guys lived in a mobile home and built a wooden stand outside to support his frig up against the house, and we drilled thru the mobile home home and the fridge, and he had a tap in the wall by his dinner chair.  Steak in a mug every night.

Indian African American Ale.  Some are pitching English Ale yeast.

People who are idiots call this beer a Black IPA.

I was impressed with this one.  Barley any orange flavor, which I liked.  See what I did there?

I was not very interested in drinking this because I thought oysters and beer shouldn't mix. It was a little heavier, and also better than I expected.

Rated 4.25 of 5. Delicious beer.

Pretty much buzzed when I got to this one, but I didn't like it at all. Just not my thing. (American Wild Ale)

Nice work Jay.  That's a lot of beer!  I really liked that Burnt Hickory beer.  The Walking Dead one was ok for me but maybe it was the barleywine taste I didn't enjoy.  I'm not really a fan of that style.  I am becoming a fan of the "sour" beers so I'll have to try that Sweetwater that you had.

The first few sours I had I didn't like but I guess they've grown on me.  But they don't taste like beer.  I no longer need to drink wine coolers since I have sours. :)

Anyone else hoard yearly releases?  Was thinking of bringing some beers to share at Black Moose - got SN Bigfoot releases from 2009-2013, figured we could do a vertical tasting for those into barleywines.  If anyone happens to have a '14, that'd be cool.

I also have several years of Wake n' Bake as well as Stone IRS and Old Guardian.  I used to always buy two or three then only drink one which has resulted in the Raiders of the Lost Ark beer fridge.

Found a '10 SN Celebration bomber in the back of the beer fridge too - not a beer that cellars well.

I thought good beer got nasty after a few months and the yeast started clumping
big, dark beers such as imperial stouts and barley wines usually get smoother/better with age.  Highly hop flavored and aroma'd beers such as imperial IPA do not get better with age.

Most of the time there is little to no yeast remaining in a production brew, but even if there is some, it will drop to the bottom and become sediment (dregs) that you avoid stirring up and avoid drinking.  If there is too much yeast remaining and the yeast cell is compromised, it can impart a bad flavor to the beer.

I went from low to high based on ABV.  Gotta give the Wicked Weed the win tonight.  I know the taste can be impacted by the previous IPA (and glass it's poured in according to "Torg") but that one stood out.  The Fresh Squeezed and Tropicalia are similar and have a sweetness to them.  The Enjoy By is stronger leaving the Hoppy and light Pernicious for the win!

HAPPY BREW YEAR!!!!!

Red Brick's Hoplanta IPA
I haven't had this in quite a while and for some reason had never been a huge RB fan. But this is a solid IPA. Real deep hop flavor. Not super bitter, I think around 50 IBU, but a damn tasty IPA.

I give it a 4.0 out of 5

A few years ago, they had capacity issues and weren't able to brew the seasonal Brown Shugga beer that everyone loved.  So they released the Sucks IPA as a consolation and was poking fun at themselves with the name.  Now that beer is awesome and one that everyone loves.

Just finished spreading 10 yards of mulch at the lake.  Fire and hash brown. Chill time.

The work doesn't sound good, unless you mean you supervised 2 other people doing the work while once in a while grabbing a rake to level out some mulch where the workers got lazy, but the fire and beer sound great!

How is that beer?

Tell me more about that Stone/Sierra
says it's a dry hopped IPA blended with an IPA aged in Rye whiskey barrels and gin infused bourbon barrels.

It's really good.  I don't get much barrel aging taste but it's nice and hoppy, the way I like it.  Closer to a Stone Enjoy By in smell and taste to me.

I'm a huge Ballast Point fan and one of my favorites is Sculpin IPA and Grapefruit Sculpin, so damn good.

Cruised through the Kroger beer isle today and saw something new to me, Sam Adams Grapefruit IPA.  I'm not a big Sam Adams guy but figured I would give it a try and hopefully be surprised .

Nope. This was a bust. Weak hop flavor, real odd grapefruit taste. Nothing like Sculpin. C+ at best.  Disappointed

Last night I had a few of Restoration's Atlas IPA's

This brewery is less than 5 miles from my house so I really wanted to love this beer.

It was a tasty brew but lacked the heavier hop flavor and lessor malty flavor I like. It was ok. I gave it 3.75 on untappd

For those that like a lighter IPA, give this one a shot

Tonight I am testing a bomber IPA from Driftwood Brewery called Fat Tug

Driftwood is a new one to me. They are in Victoria, BC...which I have been too but didn't know this brewery was there at the time.

I have a big problem w this IPA and that is I only have one 22oz bottle. This is a rock solid IPA. Killer hop flavor, on the heavy side which I like. Touch of citrus   4.5 to me. I can't remember when I had a beer this good from Canada.

I had another pint of the Atlas IPA again and I won't be buying it again. I'll try there other beers but they won't get the benefit of the doubt.

I really wanted to love it too,  want to support the Ga beers and this one is practically in my backyard.

Funny that they "toasted" my low score and check in on untappd

In Nashville, for work not play unfortunately.

Local beer.

Yahoo Pale Ale.

Not bad for an APA. Very balanced. A little bit of a citrus taste. Good beer. I have it 3.25 on untappd. I prefer a little more hops flavor but this is an APA not an IPA so it is what it is

Also had this tasty new-to-me IPA...Victory DirtWolf. Also, very tasty but I made a rookie mistake and had the triple IPA w max hops and bitterness first so I probably cooked my taste buds a little.

New one at the store a few days ago, picked it up

Red Hare SPF 50/50
Their Gangway IPA w grapefruit

Typical Red Hare. Good idea, cool name, pretty packaging...average beer

One of my top 5 beers is Ballast Point's Sculpin IPA. They make a Grapefruit Sculpin as well and it is one hell of a good beer. I was hoping that the local Red Hare may have something to rival it. Nope. Weak hops taste, super low bitterness(which means not good for an IPA) and way too much grapefruit.   It's not a Shandy or anything like that but it's a very average beer. Disappointed. The other 5 will probably be in my beer fridge for awhile.

Just looked this up on Beer Advocate. They give it a 90 which means "world class". I disagree but that's ok

Just goes to show that ones mans trash is another mans treasure.

Disappointed. i snagged some at the store the other day as well. i thought it was a great "hot day" beer, for the lake, or an all day outing.. its low content makes it a good session.. ill take the other 5 off your hands lol

My experience is that I will give the same beer a different rating depending on a lot of things: was I pissed off that day, was I happy that day, was the sun up yet, what beer I had before it, what other beer I could have had instead of that one (opportunity cost hits me often when there are other great beers available), etc...so maybe when Tony has the second one, it will be a different experience.

I'm a fan of cat piss.  In fact, I love "catty" IPAs.   I think it's Simcoe hops that give that attribute.

Scofflaw is a new brewery in Atlanta that was started but a guy that worked at Russian River brewery in CA.  So they know how to make IPAs.  Looking forward to more of their stuff.

@clark123456 I've only had Russian River when out west.  I enjoyed Pliny and Blind Pig but would love to compare them side by side to this Scofflaw beer and some of the other IPAs we can get here like Wicked Weed Pernicious and Creature Comforts Tropicalia.

I've had an amazing Pliny, and an ok Pliny...taking care of beer after the bottling process makes a difference.  I love wicked weed Pernicious, but Pliny and Pernicious are different animals.  Making a double IPA as balanced as Pliny is an amazing feat...making a bad ass IPA is impressive, but not the same, based on my experience.

Having said that...we need to do a side by side, for sure!

You can get Pliny on the East coast, in Philly...road trip...LOL

So y'all are saying this is the best shittiest Canadian beer?

On a different note.
I've recently graduated from Natty Light to Bud Light. At Thanksgiving we went to Gatlinburg for a long weekend. I splurged & got some IPA beer. Man was it tasty. Expensive but tasty. $10 for a six pack or $16 for a 12 pack is a lot more than I'm use to spending.
I also noticed with fancy beer I tend to drink on it longer & actually enjoy the taste. Not chug a can & grab another one.
So, is there a option out there that has a good flavor but won't cut into my Jeep fund?

FIFY
I noticed the can said it contained rice. WTF??
I Googled it & it stated that the rice was a cost effective way to add alcohol content, usually to cheap, American beer.

You'll still see me drinking it around the campfire.

Look at it as a price per hour maybe.  If you're drinking the fizzy yellow beer faster then the price per can may be less but the price per hour may be the same.  Maybe 2:1.  So in the end the more expensive craft beer may last twice as long for twice the price.  So it's a wash.  It's definitely heavier so fills you up more.

Do you remember which IPA you had?  SweetWater IPA is always a good initial choice.  Or maybe even a Dales Pale Ale too.

$10 for six good beers is about the going rate. The good news is that it's pretty much $10 and not $10-$40 like wine would be.

So if you can get comfortable with $10 you can basically try any good beer you want.

They are popping up everywhere.  Wish the state Yahoo's would get on board and change the laws so the breweries could be open normal hours and serve beer like any other bar.

Most recent bill to go through state legislature should allow breweries to sell 6/12 packs in house to "tour goers"

I'm sure they will figure out a way to work around that.

Went to Scofflaw a few weeks ago and yes they were selling 6 packs and bombers with the tour, you were just limited to certain # of ounces of beer.  That number included the 36 ounce samples you get with your tour.  So I couldn't buy a 6pack and a bomber because it would be over the limit.

If I'm not mistaken the bill going through now removes the "limit" and allows breweries to sell direct. Doesn't go so far as to allow them to skip distributors all together, but makes it one step closer.

Total crap shoot.

Miller/Coors bought in to Terrapin at maybe 50%(I'm guessing) 5 or so years ago. Last year Miller/Coors bought them out completely.

No drop in quality so that's good.  But what I worry about is the innovation.

Worry is relative. It's beer....

This seems like a step in the right direction.  So if I understand it correctly, we'll be able to go to the brewery to just buy beer and don't have to also pay for the tour.

You may or may not be surprised with what crops get fertilized with.  I'll never forget the smell of the chicken coop waste that was spread over my brothers farm.  Decided hunting wasn't worth it and ended up not hunting that trip becuase of it.
Went to a friends house once out in the country and they had done that on their 5 acres of land.  And they were having a kids birthday party outside.  God it was so gross and there were flies everywhere.

I know @clark123456 used to be into home brewing. I wish I had the time and space to do it. I was just talking to friend in Chicago that said the have brew houses that you can go to to brew your own. Pretty cool concept!

I have a multi tap regulator that I am selling if you know anyone interested. I cancelled my keezer plans. It's 5 or 6, I'll have to check.

Has anybody heard or seen these? They are from Boston. I was able to sample the middle one and it was Awesome. If anybody takes a trip to Boston I want a six pack of the middle beer.

I've heard trillium is amazing.  The Alchemist makes Heady Topper, one of the most sought after IPAs out there.  Have been lucky enough to get my hands on three now.  They're in the Burlington, VT area and very limited distribution.  Trillium is in Boston and I believe also very small.

Tried Slow Pour Brewing the other night. Nice atmosphere and usually a food truck outside for when you need to soak up some alcohol! Pretty nice, not as tart as your typical sour ale, but a good Christmas beer. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171224/57b2294f46d080a9fb2f147e1873db92.jpg)

There is a bridge in Gainesville that truly goes nowhere. It goes from the old Mountain Center across a 4 lane road to a dirt lot.

Left nut brewing is a Gainesville brewery so that probably the one they're referring too haha. Nice story to go with the name. N

I went to the gas station behind my house to get some bud. I found they have LNB now. I had to get the Bridge to Nowhere IPA. It claims 6.5% but after drinking four, I could hardly walk.
I can usually drink nine Sweetwater IPA's (6.3%) before that occurs.
