Title: Traeger Grills
Post by: patman on October 05, 2018, 03:40:12 PM
Thoughts and opinions on pellet grills, traeger in particular?

Talked to the sales guy at costco, and I'm intrigued. I need a new grill, and this seems pretty fool-proof since it automatically maintains temp

They had 5 models there, and the small one seemed pretty cool after I saw pics of it at tailgates (slow cooking while wheeling??) and on a built in stand at home.

Next size up ($650) is much more practical, obviously(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181005/ac8f0addda980601d3bfafea7e4c0e2e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181005/badfbaa99a7ded44632467c4af3b3315.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181005/597cc2491cb085aae68acd545f668d1c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181005/07b88d8a6dcae87d3727a6083818837f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181005/2b1e065b9a1b6132e8cd5df0bb2cc538.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181005/1d78c875739dc9022fae8ed480e83e98.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181005/8bb338ec187e4eb824337138457d6219.jpg)

I’d be interested in hearing more.  In general what I’ve read and heard is - Traeger has the market name but lacks in features compared to others.  Rec Tec, Green Mountain, and Camp Chef seem to have better features / quality.  I’ve been thinking of picking up a mid sized Green Mountain out of that list. Most of them have good Instagram presences and I would check them out.

I have a high school friend who is a regional rep for them.  I have had food from his grill at a sampling thing he hosted at a couple of events.  The tri tip was awesome, the rest (chicken, sausage, and some other beef cuts) was good.  He offered me a discount on one, but I have too many grills and smokers already to justify another one, even with a discount.

They are easy is what I recall from watching him.  I believe the company is local, maybe Georgia based?

I have 2 cheapazz grill, never use em.
But figure out which model you want to purchase & I'll see if I can get you a better deal at work (Ace).
Can bring to AOP in November.

Thanks, Dave.

Rec tec has a show room near my work, I'll go check them out next week. I had no idea there were so many brands and options haha

I have a buddy that has one and really likes it, but I haven’t had anything from it. He knows how to cook, so I trust his opinion.

If you don’t have another grill, I always push ceramic. Really versatile, long lasting, and the food is awesome.

Mty brother in law likes his and the food that I’ve had off of it has been very tasty. They are easy to set and maintain temp. That’s the advantage over most other smokers. The only thing I would say to research is how much the pellets are over charcoal  and how often you go through a bag so you can anticipate your operating cost per something like a ceramic kamado.

@patman    Did you end up getting a smoker?

A co worker just brought in a smoked Venison Steak cooked on a Traeger. Freaking delicious. Today he brought in 5 lbs of Venison Steaks for me. So of course I'm looking at Smokers and several articles.
Thankfully the bride (aka the vegetarian, loves smoked veggies especially when cooked beside meat, go figure.)

Looking for the best bang for the buck.

I havent yet, but will be buying a rec tec at some point. We havent cooked much these past few months, so buying a new grill had been on the back burner.

Based on reviews from friends, the rec tec hold the temperature more consistently, and the standard options of dual temp probes and wifi monitoring (and starting the grill from work, via wifi) are just too convenient

Rectec is also in Augusta. I would hope that means if there is an issue that proximity might be helpful.

Yea, forgot to mention that lol. They are right down the street for me and have an excellent reputation for warranty issues/repairs/etc

I didn't know much about Rec tec and this thread caused me to do a little research.  I found this Youtube video that compares the two.  The Rec tec looks like a nice setup.

I’ve got a pit boss. Awesome Lil grill. Works well have had it for 4or 5 years. When something goes wrong it’s easy to work on. Really simple set up as far as understanding the way the electronics work. Some people say they don’t add enough smoke. Jus add a smoke tube and it’s good too go. Has a lot to do with the type of pellets you buy.

I was over at a friends house and he has a Rec tec rt-700.  That thing is built like a tank.  Just the weight of the door and the thickness of the cook box was really impressive.  It convinced me that’s the one I’m getting once my backyard project is done.  If you haven’t seen one in person, you have to check it out.

Finally decided to retire my gas grill and picked up the RecTeq Bullseye. It's more of a grill than a smoker, but can also do slow cooks on it. The temperature range can be controlled from 225⁰ up to 750⁰, and from my limited use it's held the temperature with little fluctuation. I've yet to smoke anything on it, but will hopefully find some time soon.

I debated this grill vs the barrel-style smoker for a while, but determined that my family has very little intererest in smoking and I'd get more use out of an actual grill.

The one shortfall is that this particular grill does not have the wifi controls, mainly due to the fact that leaving a grill at 750⁰+ unattended is not the greatest idea and they mentioned that the intense heat was faulting them. But, with a built in temp probe and digital readout that I can clearly see from my couch this isn't the worst thing haha(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210427/5b222b81ab17d0ed865f910b166bcfb6.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210427/ffdd37310ba0533cc6ec59c3677faec6.jpg)

My buddy bought a Traeger 650 on Sunday and doing his first smoke today.  He had some other smoker that he didn't like and some POS Komodo knockoff that he hates.  I'm interested in how it performs for him because I like the method of the pellet smokers and would get rid of my large BGE.  I'll report back on Mikey's results for the Traeger.

I'm sold on the idea of a pellet smoker and have been researching some at different price points.  I like the Recteq RT-700 and I recently have been researching this Oklahoma Joe Pellet grill.  The Oklahoma Joe has an interesting baffle system that supports both low and slow smoke as well as high heat sear at a pretty reasonable price point.  I'm going to a demo showcase this Sat to check them out.

Pellet grills are great.  In the summer you can cook anything that you would put in the oven and not compete with the AC.

I have been running a Green Mountain Grills Jim Bowie since 2016. At the time I bought it you could by one with wifi for the same cost as a Traeger w/out.  I have been happy with it. Have had to replace a few parts including a plastic fan prop that I melted due to a bad hot start. Customer service has been easy to deal with.

If you can afford the wifi, it is worth it.  It's great for managing long overnight smokes without having to get out of bed. You can rollover and confirm you don't have a temp excursion or trip a GFI and need to restart. I have smoked overnight with temps in the single digits using a thermal blanket to manage heat lost.  Ran all night on a single hopper.

Also recommend buying the biggest one you can justify.  You will never be angry to have too much space. However, if you wish you had more it is hard to justify trading up for the occasional big smoke.

Both my bother and brother in-law also have GMG's and are happy.

Im having a hard time making the decision for a semi portable version for the trailer. I really want the Recteq you got, how are the wheels, weight, etc?

hung up between the Green Mtn grills Davy Crockett and that Recteq. The GMG has the wifi setup but is smaller and no wheels.

I did go.  For the price point and the versatility of smoke and sear, I bought the Oklahoma Joe Rider DLX.  They were throwing in some promotion items like a wrap-around stainless shelf, cover, 20lbs of pellets, and free delivery and assembly as a pre-order showcase special.  Also, had some damn good ribs, ribeye and smoked sausage off of it at the show!  It should be delivered on May 10.

I asked about it and of course, they said positive things...IMO, with any pellet grill, I think the environment it stays in probably has an impact.  In my case, this will be in a covered outdoor pavilion area and not exposed to the weather directly.  So, I feel good about it.  I'll let you know.

Luckily (maybe) I picked this up before I found out about the motor. Finally had some help today to put it together and going to load it down with some ribs, salmon, and wings tomorrow!
