Title: Tellico
Post by: ranger11 on May 01, 2008, 08:33:02 PM
Will there be any pavement driving from the camp grounds to the trails?
I dont have insurance on the truck but I will put it on if we have to drive on pavement its cheaper than the ticket.

Yes, I hear you better be tagged too, the TN rangers are tough on vehicles without tags and insurance.  Drinking too.

From:  `http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?p=8029853
Stateline is nice. The TN rangers are bad news. Last year we got $125 each tickets for drinking a cold beer while cooking a steak. This was ridiculous!
Bring solo cups and keep cans out of site. When the ranger pulls up solo cups go into the fire.

If you stay at state line campground on the Tennessee side then no. If you stay at Crawford's there is some pavement to the trails. But even if you stay at Crawfords, you can tow your rig and then leave your truck and trailor and the pay station on trail 1. There should be plenty of room.

Pretty sure that everyone is staying at Stateline. I have never stayed there myself, but apparently the rangers are asses. I'm sure other guys will have input on this, but I know tons of untagged and unregistered rigs leave from there and head up the trails.

Actually Will.................if you stay in Stateline, you need to be tagged also, NC rangers ticket people for coming from Stateline campground to the NC trailhead checkin without being tagged.  It is a state road right up to the trailhead.  Trust me, if you ride Tellico at all, you BETTER be tagged if you stay in either campground.

So will the 6/28 ride be appropiate for mild builds, or are we hitting big stuff?  Despite the December trip, I want to go back, but I don't want a repeat performance, because that day sucked.

I'm sure we will hit everything, but there are bypasses for about everything. Mild is fine for tellico.

well we will probably end up doing like last time and splitting the group up for part of the trip so the big boys can hit obstacles and the little guys still get in time riding, not watching and winching. It worked out great last time actually.

There may be a few different opinions on this one, but what would you say are the minimum requirements to be a "big boy".  33's? 35's?  lockers front and rear?
Title: Re: Tellico

lol a winch!

No seriously, I think that is more a driver call. I mean Chris tried to get me to go up Guardrail and Helicopter last June and my Jeep was almost stock (same lift and tires as now). I didn’t because I was scurred.. This year will depend on weather and who will run with the smaller group when the big rigs split to go to their obstacles and if I ever get that Aussie in the front... But no matter what, if you want to run with the big guys at least have a winch so you can get your self up.

x2.  We will not be all riding on one group unless there ends up only being 1 or 2 rigs that are not fit for the larger stuff.

You need 4" lift and 33's MINIMUM to even think about the bypasses at Guardrail and Heli.  Since part of Tellico is shut down, alot more rigs are digging out the few open trails, so honestly, I would suggest 35's to be "comfortable".

no scurredness here. I am just looking out for the other fellas. I have no issue leading the "smaller" group to meet back up with the big group. That and its nice to have a good range CB and a winch with each group, lord knows when we might run into another downed tree...

Like I said in the other thread. Screw Tellico.  They can pave it, cater it to the trout guys and keep it.  Hell, they can make a bicycle trail out of it, I don't care. After this June trip, I highly doubt I will go back.  The USFS and SELC can eat me.  Private parks FTW.

Chris, I share your frustartion! I have been to Tellico 4 times and fell in love the first time out! It is a complete tragedy that they will eventually pave 1, close all of 11, and 12 and we will be left with a 2wd park with little to no challenge. I can see it now as the yuppies roll in and drive there subarus and tahoes back through the paved over trails. It is a freakin shame for sure! I give the whole thing another year and I bet it gets shot in the head!

ok so lets get serious here fellas...

I would like to ride Tellico again, probably the last time. Seriously, on 32"x10" A/T tires and an LSD in rear how am I going to do there? I did fine the last 2 trips with the 35's on but I have not been since December and I hear the ruts are getting bad. So is it worth me going? It would only be for Saturday. In reality I would love to just do my picture taking but I dont want to drive my Jeep up saturday morning just to park it all day to take pictures...

Jerm, I think you will be fine. You might scrape a bit but nothing that would case damage. Only a few spots that you would have trouble with. Might be the last chance you get to see schoolbus, heli and guardrail. I for one am bringing the video camera and digital!

Jerm, when I went last year, I was on 31" MTs and open front and rear and I didn't really have any problems. You have slightly larger tires, although with less traction, a shorter wheelbase, the rear LSD, and a winch if needed. You will be fine.

So, do we have an idea on how many people are going to be in each group? I know last year, Chris had planned out 2 different routes for the "harder" group and the "easier" group and I thought that it really helped us go right out and ride. Or are we just going to wait until that Friday night at the cabin?

I am sure a plan will unfold but it is a little more difficult to do now with the current closures. This should be an interesting trip. If I make it I might wheel in the morning some, afternoon but I will be at the open house that is between 1 and 4 p.m. saturday.

Look just above the person's avatar, where it has Karma. You can applaud or smite somebody. Applauds are usually given when somebody does something to help somebody out and smites can be give if the person is a jerk.

I could be wrong on mine. I thought I had seven, but maybe I only had 6. Who know.

I'm giving Chris one of his back.

Well, looks like I may be out for this weekend. Just looked at the calendar and realized that me and my wife have been together for 6 years today (oops). I think that she is not going to be into camping in the rain. So I think I am going to surprise here with a trip, elsewhere. Of course I wont tell her that we are not going camping. I still have a leak in my radiator and front diff. so I will probably be better off in more than one way if I miss this ride. I am still up in the air with what I am doing. If the weather is better then I will be there. If it rains I will do the right thing by my wife.

Hey there and welcome!  Does your vehicle meet the minimum requirements as stated here?  Also, is your vehicle 4WD? Let's get past this point and then we can see if Tellico will work for your rig.

If you are a stock height ZR2 on 31's, I don't think I would even attempt to wheel Tellico.  We have guys with 3" & 4" lifts who hang up.  While we are welcoming to any and every vehicle, we frown upon having to constantly tug stock suspension vehicles around at Tellico.  It gets old, real quick.  I am sorry, but you would probably be miserable after a couple hours and getting back in the park could be a nightmare for you since it is a very aggressive park. Now, get that lift on there and I think you will have a better chance.  A little more tire wouldn't hurt either.  ;D

With this being said, I will leave it up to you as to whether or not you come ride, but we WILL put you on the rock garden at the Cabin to see what your vehicle can handle.

Post by: Ben H. on June 26, 2008, 11:20:05 PM
HiddenFarce, I'm going to and have gone to Tellico on just a small lift and 31"s. Now, while I never got hung up too bad, I scrap and my skids and sliders were used. A lot. So, I'm not trying to discourage you, just letting you know that unless you have a fare amount of armor, you will get some damage.
Title: Re: Tellico

Are trails #1 and #4 open? I know my rig isn't much but I'm in this for the outdoor experience, having a bit of fun with my daily driver, and hanging out with some other off roaders.
Title: Re: Tellico
Post by: GIJoe4500 on June 27, 2008, 01:10:07 AM
The issue isn't only if the easy easy trails are open are not.  You'd have to have someone to go with ya down the easy trails, just in case.  And from the looks of it, all the guys that are wanting to go, want to go down some more technical stuff.  Best thing to do, is put the money that you were gonna spend on this trip towards that lift you are wanting, and maybe some sliders and skid plates.

Like I said, we'd love to have you hang out, but you would be hanging up left and right.  Trail 1 is the main gravel road and you will need lift for trail 4.

Don't take this as no one wants to off-road with ya.  Until you get some armor and a lift and what not, best bet would be to try to talk someone into lettin' you ride shotgun.  I would love to take my truck off-roading as well, but I'm in the same boat as you for now.  Hell, you are actually a step ahead of me.  Mine's not even a 4x4 yet.  But hopefully, within the next couple months, my truck will be up-to-snuff enough to go out too.  But there is no way I'm goin' without some bigger meats, and some armor, mainly sliders and a transfercase skid.

Not all places we go are as difficult. More bypass. I wheeled a durango on 33s and wouldnt take that to tellico. And was very miserable most places I went. More than welcome to come and hang and check it out though.
