#1 Front u-joint and axles-
Usually can limp off the trail and the axle shafts need to come out. Jack out, are you on 35's and your factory jack won't reach?  Should have a Hi Lift.  secure vehicle, lift Jeep, For a TJ remove wheel (4 prong? lock socket?), remove caliper, remove rotor, remove hub bolts (13mm 12 point wrench), remove axle, remove axle. You get the idea.  Are you prepared?  Helpful video at the bottom.

#2 Driveshaft Failure -
Secure the vehicle and climb under.  Depending on your vehicle (TJ w/ slip yoke eliminator kit, Rubi, or JK) and what exactly happened, you'll have 4 small nuts to remove from ujoint ubolts or about 10 bolts on a JK at the rear axle, and then depending on your setup the same at the transfer case end.  Small wrenches come in handy here as does a ratchet wrench.  You need small tools too. Video at the bottom.

#3 Ring Gear Failure-
Teeth gone, maybe just the spider gears.  If it will roll, get it off the trail to a level working area.  If it drives OK, and its not a trailer queen, you may want to try and limp home.  If it is popping and binding, you need to trailer it or take action.  In the front, you can unlock hubs if equipped, or remove shafts, and if it's the rear it gets complicated. You'll want to trailer it but if you must, depending on the break, you can pull axles and remove spider gears or ring gear in the rear and over fill the housing with gear oil to insure gear oil to the outer bearings.  If it's a D35 and you broke a rear axle shaft, the wheel will move outward so you'll know it's broken and you'll need a shaft

This is the basic recovery kit.  Good list David.

I would add D RingS...plural. More than one.

And...always check to make sure your winch controller is in working order AND in your bag.  It has been known to be left behind.

For these sockets, should I buy deep set sockets, or regular.  Am trying to fill out my tool bag now.

I don't recall needing deep wells for those sizes.

For the JK
Get a 13mm, 12 point for the front axle unit bearing bolts

Get a 19mm, will work on Lugnuts

I would also do 20, 21 and 22...trackbar bolts and CA bolts

Big daddy 35mm for front axle shaft nut

I have quickly seen the advantage to having a literal "tool kit" that can be folded and closed up and easily stored over a giant heavy bag of junk like I carry. I tend to carry a ton of stuff with me on the trails and really need to digure out a good storage solution.

JK specific - When I read on various forums some say 36mm some 35mm for axle shaft, why?  Are they so close in size it doesn't matter?

36 is a touch loose.   35 is touch tight.

I choose 35mm and it has worked perfectly for me.

I really like my roll bag.  One of the guys on here suggested using the tools in your trail bag during maintenance and build activities to determine what is actually needed...It was a great suggestion.

Yes, it's how I work on the Jeep.  If I need something else, it goes in the bag.  I need to weigh my bag.  Heavy as hell.

I have recently added 1/2" ratchet, extension, and 19mm socket.  It is possible I have more stuff in the roll bag.  I have two styles of roll bag, one is canvas and the other is nylon.  I prefer the nylon one in the picture.

When Kent broke his track bar mount we used a short piece of steel wire with loops on each end to repair it to get off the trail. So you never know what you will need but ingenuity always comes out in times of need.

I checked off every item mentioned in this thread and then some. I have ocd and generally carry a portable version of a jeep garage w me, heh.
I’ll add necessary fluids for your rig safely secured for trail , some of those cheap Mylar survival blankets - good for lying in mud and working on vehicles or keeping warm or getting attention or covering stuff - , some HD tape , a life straw (?) and mil-spec cableties . Extra socks and skivvies for those high pucker Off camber climbs are good too...

everyone should have a spare serpentine or fanbelt lashed to their rollbar or cage. I too learned carrying a brake line and even a spare , longest ignition wire for your particular ride,  for longer overnite rides, can save ya.
