Title: SOLID diff covers
Post by: Will on December 10, 2008, 11:35:50 PM
They're only $65 right now. Just thought I would let everyone know cause they're usually over $100 apiece.

Yeah, I paid full price for my front AND rear.

Free shipping too! This is crazy. $65 shipped.  These things are solid too... no pun  ;D  but really, I have smacked them on many occasions. They take a pounding.

No, they won't fit!   :D  The TJ is done when the Rubi 44 goes under it, but I won't change it out until someone buys the Dana 30 HP/ Yukon 4.88, E-Locker, Chomoloy, reinforced axle that's in it now.  Oh, the axles?  I aint telling.  Many moons to go.

Sorry I missed your Birthday, Happy belated birthday Ben. I didn't get you a gift because I didn't know where to send it, and it sounded like you wouldn't wheel forever trying to brake in the new clutch. Enough BS Happy Birthday anyway, I hope you had a good one.

I called on my covers today and was told I have a 44 set aside for my order, and the 60 should be in by the end of the week and they should be shipped early next week.

Read over on MC where somebody bought one and the bolt holes are around 1/8" off. Hope everyone over here has better luck with theirs.

But oh well, I won't be getting some. They don't make one for my rear axle and I want a RSS one for the front.

Finally got good news...  The front and rear SOLID  differential covers are installed and look good.  No major problems.  The fill plug was a little difficult.  Not sure what size allen wrench fits it..  Looks like 7/8" or something larger.  Tried a 1/2 in drive but a tad too big.  Finally used a 3/8 " bolt with a 9/16 in head with 2 nuts screwed on the bolt.  tightned right up with a 9/16" wrench..  Good Luck..

P.S.   the xtra oil capacity was not kidding.  It took 7 qts of 90 weight to fill up my D44's.

It may take a little more tomorrow.  I will take a quick ride and then re-check and top off if needed..

Thanks for everyone's help..

Thats the way to do it. Check out the price of an allen key to fit that hole v. the 50 cents you spent on hardware.

tell me about it. the nv3550 needs a freaking 17mm allen for the fill/drain plugs...guess they wanted a $ a mm b/c it was $17 for the freaking socket at sears.

I may be wrong but I remember hearing that you should not overfill the axles more than it usually takes. Anyone else hear that?? That is alot of fluid!
Title: Re: SOLID diff covers
Post by: Rockinwrangler on December 23, 2008, 09:07:03 PM
Let me know about the fluid levels..  I do know on SOLID's web site that they use the extra fluid capacity as a positive selling point.  How much fluid did everybody else use??

Features
• Lifetime warranty
• Thick nodular iron casting with reinforcing ribs.
• Fully machined seal surface.
• Machined bolt bosses for maximum clamping force.

Benefits
• Adds rigidity to weak factory housings
• Replaces weak factory stamped steel covers
• Large diameter fill plug for easy fluid replacement
Higher fill plug location for increased fluid capacity
• Dense material quiets down noisy lockers.
Title: Re: SOLID diff covers
Post by: Will on December 23, 2008, 09:11:46 PM
I know that my 8.8 will take more than 3 quarts just to get the fluid to the fill hole. I think that's overkill for that axle. I keep it at the bottom of the tubes which is about 2 1/2

Ben,

1.) If there's too much fluid in the diff it will just blow out of the breather tube until it's happy. I think air lockers are the only diff equipment that are finicky about fluid levels

2.) I hate you. Change that sig, fool!

Post by: Ben H. on December 23, 2008, 09:48:05 PM
I'm with Will (not in that way, I ain't gay, I just mean I agree with him) that air lockers, or maybe selectable lockers, are the only ones that require the stock amount. Otherwise putting more in there is fine.

I over filled my rear D44 that has a Detroit Locker in it and the oil was blowing out of the vent tube and through the driver side seal. I think a little extra oil may be ok but not an extra 2 or 3 quarts.

Finished the install today, the front clears at full lock by about a 3/8" or so. Kind of hoping it would hit so I would get off my arse and fab another high steer arm for drivers side and move the tie rod up.

He's fine!  ;D  No it scared the crap out of us. I thought he lost his fingers. He went to move the tree saver up the the tree so we could lift the Jeep up a little. I went to put the trans in neutral so the Jeep wouldn't move while he was doing it (that atlas was trying to take me all over the place) and when I did the Jeep slid back on the rock I was on and the breaks are so bad on that thing they couldn't hold it. Next thing I hear is "LET THE LINE OUT!!!" yeah it was scary. Sorry about that again. That could have been really bad. But you know I ain't got no money  :P

I was watching a 4x4 thing on the disco channel and a guy got his hand rolled up in the winch. Glad you got all your fingers and hand still connected to your arm and your arm connected to your body and your body connected to your head.

That sounded like some Dewild typing.   ;D

yeah, between almost flopping the jeep and almost losing some fingers I was about ready to go home after that.

Man, that could have been a miserable day.
Actually it would have probably been roll the Jeep, instead of flop. I'm pretty sure you were far enough up the hill that if it had of came over, it would have rolled to the bottom.
