Title: How did you hear about and find GATR?
Post by: Krawler00 on July 21, 2016, 11:04:18 AM
Serious question for all the new guys, old guys etc. How did you happen to hear about us (GATR) and what was your first ride with us? Was it a good experience, any suggestions? We are always looking for ways to get our name out there and improve the club to make it the best around so post up!

I just happened to google offroad clubs in GA many years ago and GATR was like the 3rd down on the search listings. Made my first ride at Aetna many years ago. Had a great trip and made some friends on the first trip.

i actually heard about it through bobby many years ago when i sold him my rear bumper. We lost touch for a few years then when i got sick of trying to organize rides with local buddies who always back out at the last minute i got back in touch with him. What i like most is how there is a ride every month regardless. I also know that at any point out on the trail this group of guys and girls is there if i need them.

Google search I'm sure... i liked that I didn't have to come to a physical monthly meeting before coming on a ride.  Liked that it wasn't just a "Jeep" club even though I had a Jeep.

First ride was at Durhamtown.  I'd never done any offroading, and only had put my Jeep in 4WD in the driveway I think.  Somehow, I got near the front of the "air down" line.  When it was time to roll, I tried to get into 4LO but it wouldn't move out of neutral.  My CB wasn't transmitting, so all I heard on the radio was "hey, what's the deal up front, why aren't we moving?"...... Doug walked up and rocked the Jeep a little bit which let me shift into 4LO.  Embarrassing?  Yes.  But I appreciated that nobody made a big deal out of it and we had a really good day (for D'town at least).

I'm trying to remember exactly how I found the club...maybe just googling off-road clubs in GA.  My first ride was the forest service ride in a mostly stock 4Runner.  I got hooked quickly and I've been getting poorer ever since.  I think those forest service rides are great for newbies...just not sure how to get more of them to come back for a "real" ride.  Everyone was super-nice and didn't make me feel out of place for my lack of knowledge or rig.

I googled and found a few clubs/forums...this was back in 2010 I believe.

Joined both forums, one was GaTR.

Made a few rides with the one N. Ga. club and was not impressed at all.  Even though I was a total nube I wasn't happy with the experience.

Then I made a Gulches ride with GaTR....had an absolutely awesome time.  That was the ride I met Seth, Kevin, Jared and others.  The rest is history

I joined another club first, then met Tony, Bobby, and Josh through that. They told me to check out GATR if I wanted to wheel.

I think my first ride was Windrock. It was my first organized ride, so I was a little intimidated and excited. I also slowed us down at the beginning because I wasn't all the way ready in time. Very embarrassed, but like Jared's story, nobody made it a big deal of it. Ended up having a great time. Got some bigger obstacles under my belt, and greatly contributed to my current addiction. Still learning more every ride.

I did the Forest Service ride with my friend Seth @Sasquatch and wanted more, bought my jeep a month later.

I think my 1st ride was Beasley Knob, totally stock, got stuck, had fun. I like knowing y'all have my back. On Beasley we had someone bust a steering stabilizer and within minutes he had tools brought to him and we were rolling. I learned a lot about this group on that 1st ride.

I keep inviting people from the FaceBooks page to the forums and have heard on more than one occasion that they were waiting on approvals...I didn't realize there was an approval process. Those FS rides and maybe a class on Winching 101 might draw some people in, but they have to want this type of community and activity.

I think continuing to push the Tread Lightly campaign and SFWDA to the other jeepers in Georgia should be part of our message because the FS roads can't support the level of traffic they are seeing. The off road parks can and do.

Google and then showed up at a ride at Gulches with my 2012 JKU open/open (I see a Gulches theme emerging).  Got hooked on the experience and really liked the people. Quickly determined that I wanted to get something I didn't worry about scratching up and got the TJ and sold the JKU.  I keep learning every time out and have a blast.

As I recall it was a combination of Google and WranglerForum.  I was on WF in Michigan so I checked out the Georgia section.  I believe Kevin P and/or someone else may have mentioned GATR when I was looking for people/places to ride.

My first ride I froze my butt off camping at Morris Mtn in February of 2013.

My frosty Jeep between Blue Wes and White Wes.

Internet search for local Wheeling clubs. My first ride was a forest service ride that Matt organized up by lake Burton back in early 2010.

Had my Jeep for about 6 years. Had been to Beasley Knob,
Tellico several times but only by myself or with another Jeep.
I wanted to learn more and go to more places. I was on Wrangler
Forum and checked out the Georgia Clubs section. First ride was
at Gulches then Aetna in 2010....then the next several years I went
on 10 or 12 rides a year...

I looked up my into post in May 2010.  Seems I hooked up with some GATR people at a ride at River Rock earlier that month.

I joined back in 2012, found GATR just by a Google search. Joined initially because of the professional page and club forum. First ride was Gulches (GATRFest) if I remember correctly, like many others it seems. I really enjoyed how there weren't any meetings required or anything before wheeling, just meet the rig requirements (CB, etc) and show up. Having trouble finding a similarly well run club up here in Michigan that doesn't require sponsorship to join and actually wheels, not just meet up and talk about it.

I believe I found out about GATR through Kevin. He posted some pictures of "went to a offroad park" on NGJers. I actually joined to steal ideas to use over there but........

My first ride was GATR Fest 2015 at AOP. Epic.

This club is on the right track & I hope it stays that way for many years to come.

I joined a loooooooooong time ago. I was staying in a cabin at tellico with Matt, Daniel, Brad, and Adam when they decided to create GATR. I worked with Brad so he invited me to go stay with them at Tellico and joined at the very beginning.

I was looking for a group(s) to go ride with at off road parks I had never been too.
I think river rock may have been the 1st ride with GaTR.
 I suffer from CRS.

Some how I met Mike Livingston and he invited me to a meet and greet at some bar back in late 05 or early 06. I have just been hanging around ever since. My first ride with the group I believe was at DT and then we had the first GATRFest at River Rock (I miss RR)

2013  I thnk. Googled, found GATR.  What caught my attention was "any 4x4 vehicle, not just Jeeps" I was new to wheelin and wanted a place that me and my truck would be welcome.  Found it!
My first ride was the first annual cook out Trey mountain ride.  Ha, I put it in 4 low for the whole ride!  Now I do most of it in 2 wheel.
I think for new members it should be required to read about "tread lightly" even before joining as a guest.  People just don't know, I was one of them.  Awesome club, awesome members, awesome info.

This was true for me as well. After moving to north GA, Google lead to a lot of clubs in the area that all had Jeep in the title or appeared to be Jeep only.  This was a change for me, in North Carolina rides usually consisted of about half jeeps. In GA it seems everything is 98% Jeep.

My first official GATR ride was March 2013 at AOP pre-opening ride.

I bought a Jeep had the craving to get it off road, google gave me several options. Most of the options were old clubs that were not active anymore.
First ride was CFR 17 from meeting some of you at the gate during check in till the time I left I felt welcome. The ride definitely gave me the bug to start upgrading.

Needed help putting on a lift nearly 10 years ago. Tedder suggested I come here from Jeepforum. Rowingfish (Kyle) & I think Richard came out to help. Used to go on a few rides a year, years ago, but unfortunately for now I'm stuck reading ya'll adventures. Still have the Jeep, with a little more HP  //;D//, just no free time between work & family stuff!

I actually don't remember.  I bought an '09 Rubicon in mid '09 and went on a few rides.  Forrest Service Rd., Chocco, and one other place.  Had a great time.  Sold the 09 and went 2 years without a Jeep before I bought my '14 JKR.  Now I can't imagine not owning a Jeep (that will eventually become a trailer whore).

I heard about GATR through a google search. I'm a member of another club in Virginia called Northern Virginia Jeepers Association (NOVA Jeepers). I've done some wrenching parties and trail rides with them and was able to learn a lot (I'm still learning too). There's a lot of good guys in that group. So I wanted my son to be able to experience being part of a group of like minded off road enthusiasts.
Anyway, my first off road adventure was to Durhamtown. My sons and I went but I didn't really know what to do, so we were limited on what we did. Since my son just got his jeep I wanted to help him find a group that he could get involved in (trail rides, wrenching parties, etc...). So far I've been pretty impressed with the forum and the people here. I'm looking forward to going on a trail ride with you guys in the near future.

I stumbled across GATR when I did a Google search for off-road trails near Atlanta. I lurked for a little while and checked out similar groups. GATR stood out to me as the best to join. A couple of reasons for that would be that its clearly loaded with very experienced people, and appears very open to accepting new people.

I spent some years doing grassroots rallycross, most of which I did in SoCal. I made a lot of good friends doing that and enjoyed helping out newcomers as well. Now I'm ready to experience some wheelin' and this looks like a great place to start.

I , too, am an active member at JKOwners and once when complaining about not being able to find any local Jeepers in Mid- Tenn after relocating here in ‘05 from Georgia until today (& pretty much asking for ANYone to wheel with in the S.East on that forum ) and always wheeling alone. I’d reached a point where jeep/driver couldn’t tackle any more difficult/challenging trails because solo is a different thing than group riding.

So, @tcdawg said, “ you would really like GATR “ . Forever grateful; first ride was this past weekend at AOP & it was best time I ever have had with my Jeep.
