Title: Tellico Spring Fling Pictures
Post by: RotorHead on April 04, 2008, 11:26:13 PM
I just got back from Tellico. I had a blast even though I only got to stay for one run. I ended up skipping the night run, but can't wait to go back. It was a pleasure meeting you new guys. I look forward to the next run. I'm heading down to Florida in the morning. There should be some good stories and pictures when you guys get back.

Here's a sneak peak at the few that I have.

very nice...I'm wondering if they ever managed any night rides or if the storm got the better of them?

They did ride a night ride last night, and said it was rough on Trail 4 to the end and back.  Rained solid for a few hours this morning.  The guys were heading up to ride as we headed out to come home.

Thanks Mike!  Here's a link below to most of the photos we shot.  Even with some of these great shots we missed the best when Ben was hung up on a 3 point, and the rest of us sliding down school bus cause we were all helping.

It was a dreary, windy, rainy day, darkness had set upon us....... and it was awesome!  Thanks to Ben, Will, Mike, and Chris for making our Friday ride a great experience for me, my daughter Madison, and my buddy Steve.  I plan to stay many days when we go up in June (if not before).

We did a night ride. It was fun, not a bad way to experience tellico for the first time. No good pics of the night stuff. The locker definitely works and I got to try it on a nice ledge at the top of 5?? i think. The show n shine had a better turn out than expected.
I have some pics to upload.

Hey guys.  A funny thing happened to me on the way to the Shine & show......

Thats NOT me in the pic, but it is my GC, I took the pic. I was by myself.

Some excellent help from Travis, Blue Ridge 4X4.

Definitely not me, ha-ha.

Travis flatbedded it back to his shop. Front 2 tires were flat. Changed a valve stem in one and remounted them pumped them up and good to go. Had to replace the battery, my Red Optima cracked, added some power steering fluid, cranked it up. No smoke, Travis test drove it, had a shimmy, but was mud on the one wheel, rinsed it was ok. The steering wheel is off-center, and we had to tape ans seal off the side rear window and drivers window. I drove it back home and it drove well. It seems to be sitting lower on the right side...Oh yea WHAT HAPPENED?

I was detoured off of 76, 60 spur had a house fire on it, onto Cut Kane Road. It was dark, raing and I never been on it. I has the OD off to help with the curves i had been doing. The last curve the Jeep slid and I slammed into a grassy hill that separated the road I was on and another road forked to the right. I went airborne and landed on the side sliding about 5-8 feet.
I was looking for my phone, about 3-5 min. when a couple people came along to help me. I have a small scrape on my right elbow, some "shot marks from the glass shatter, and a small bruise on my right lower back. I didn't have the Jeep loaded with my off-road gear, (which I always secured in place), so there were a lot fewer things flying around so I didn't get hit with anything.
Well, I had been kinda looking for a "new" DD. Guess this forces my hand. The GC will be a off-road veh. I have a few thoughts. 4" long arm. I'll keep y'all updated.

Glad to hear you're ok!

Saturday was sooooo slick and nasty. I broke a u-joint and it wallowed out an ear on the outer axle shaft. Chris had some extra U-joints but we kept breaking caps trying to get it to sit in the ear. Ended up just removing the inner shaft and going 3-wheels down the mountain. Thanks everybody for helping out and getting us down those nasty ledges.

Had a blast!!! Can't wait to go back when it's dry  ;D  We missed all the activities at Crawford's when we were bouncing and sliding around at Guardrail and Helicopter. Too bad because somebody else got the winch that I was certain to win at the raffle!  >:(              :D

Hey Will, sorry to hear about the mechanicals, and glad it all worked out.  Sounds like it was more difficult Saturday.  I assume you guys came out the same way you went in, and avoided School Bus Saturday.  How was it coming down guardrail and helicopter after all the rain overnight?

We came down 3. That was pretty scary  :o  Some big, slick ledges.

Man there were at least 100 rigs at the show and shine. I thought that was a good success. There were tons of people in town. We were most definitely noticed.

Last time we were up there, all they had at Walmart was non-alcoholic. I think Murphy's in a dry county.

Yes sir... before I left. Dumb me cleaned out the husky liner before I did it, then got it filthy again after. That place was a sloppy mess. I think it flexed pretty good. I wish I could score it one day.

Yeah, that's some pretty good flex if you ask me. Once I get my body lift so I can trim some bumpstop and get control arms I might be able to get that much, but mine isn't close to that at the moment.

It done good Will. For just a front locker you gotta admit it pulled it's own. That ledge on trail 8 was atleast 4 foot high if not more. You got over it pretty easy. How does the belly look after this weekend? I have a nasty dent front of mine. Hit the track bar once, right lower control arm, and diffs. And my tire almost ruptured on the way home. Interco and 4wd parts are trying to give me the run around on warranty. I have 5500 miles on these tires. Give me a break! I know if I had my old BFGs on they would replace it no problems! But hey, if that is the worst I am good with that!

The t-case skid doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. (It was already banged up from my first trip to Tellico  ;D) The gas tank skid is scrapped to H*LL! I gotta be careful with that. I think I'm gonna pick up a Rokmen this summer, but that new model stocker is actually pretty stout. It didn't really dent at all and I smacked and rubbed it a few really good times. I'm hookin' her up this summer. I'm gonna buy a big plate of 3/16" and some tubing and just go to town on some skids and armor.

Thanks man! I think we all smacked Tellico around given the conditions. I smacked her a little too hard though  :-\  haha  Glad to hear that tire didn't blow. It looks nasty. Let us know how that turns out.

It was one of the llllllllllllooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssstttttttttttttt days on a trail I have ever had! We must have sat on guardrail trail for 3 hours. We hit the trail head around 1:30 and hit pavement around 9:30. It was fun but getting a bit hairy.

Yeah Chris put me to the task of never letting him go back to Tellico when it's raining. I think I may have to hold myself to that as well. It was just way too sketchy and I got stupid with the gas because it was so slick.

Those are the Mopar stainless steel tubes and they were on the Jeep when I bought it. Rockers have been on the list for awhile and I kinda have been waiting for these things to get ripped off. I've laid them on rocks many times and they just flex and scrape and then go back into place. They're not the best protection and they'll be coming off this summer, but they've actually done a pretty good job and they're not completely useless when it comes to protecting the body. They don't even look banged up and you can see that I've given them hell. Better to leave em on than have no protection at all. I'll have rocker guards this summer though.

Will, your Jeep is amazingly capable in it's current configuration, so it must be good driver skills and knowing your ride.  You did a nice job Friday. Sorry to hear about the problem Saturday.  We all do the same thing: push it til we find the "weakest link".  After a reasonable effort, I want to pull a line and move forward with no harm done.

Is there a club "standard " on when to offer or pull out the winch line?

Sometimes it's a pride issue which I really don't fall victim to much. (Mike hooked me on a good phrase at River Rock last time, "Will...  I ain't got nothing to prove this weekend." haha) For instance, as soon as I broke my U-joint I did what I reasonably could to get up the Helicopter bypass and then stopped. Ben turned around at the top and winched me up and I didn't even have to ask. He knew I wanted it as soon as I stopped trying to gas it up the slippery hill.

Then when we had to go down 3 to get off the mountain it was pouring and I heard there was a nasty ledge we had to go down. After dealing with my axle and deciding to leave it out I didn't wanna screw up anything else, so without even seeing the ledge I had already decided to have Chris hook to me from behind and control my descent down a nasty incline.

When time is not an issue and it's all in good fun we like to let people try whatever they feel they're capable of. If you're having trouble guys will almost always offer a winch and you don't have to take it, but most times that's a hint  ;D  When you're holding up 30 rigs like all the guys at Guardrail on Saturday, it's a good idea to just try it a few times and then let a few people by, or else you'll keep a lot of people in the same spot all day.  ::)

I'm usually pretty good with stopping before I break something and bumming a winch line. This time I was just being stupid and pushing my Jeep too hard. I didn't take it easy and try to crawl up a ledge because I watched Chris try that before me and fail so I knew I couldn't do it. I did the only thing that would have gotten me up it in this situation but it was a little too much and I knew better, but lesson learned right?

Thanks for the generous comments! The next time I see those trails I should have about 4 more inches of clearance at the belly, a lot more protection, and my own line to pull  ;D  Jeep season is summer for me. I actually have a little money.  :)

That made me laugh. Don't know why, but it was funny to me.

Maybe we should put that in the official handbook.  ;)

Hey Doug,

Thanks for the offer man! I won't have any money though until this summer when I'm back home in LaGrange and working. I was really wanted to get a Warn (probably the M8000) but I also really like the Superwinch which is on the front of your TJ and Chris' XJ. What mounting plate do you have? I will be needing to grab one of those when I do end up getting my winch. How much would you let them both go for?

Edit: This was meant to be a pm, but it's early for me. ha

PM me the price if you don't mind

It's always an unspoken among wheelers... well most. We all want to come out unscathed and wheel home. But sometimes it does not work that way. It's like driving out on trail 4 at 10:45 at night and you just want off that freakin trail! You push, go faster and forget that you don't have a desert runner to soak up the abuse. The best thing I ever heard a guy say to me was... "God made somebody smart enough to make that winch... you gotta be smart enough to use it".

I know that when I get mine it will get plenty of use. I will not be afraid to pull cable if it's gonna get me up the trail and keep me from breaking stuff. That's why I wanna make sure I get a reasonably fast and reliable winch.

Not pulling, or wanting to pull cable is simply a "pride" issue, nothing more, nothing less.  You can generally vibe right away if you are getting over something or not.  Each vehicle trying to get up Guardrail and not getting farther than 5' on a 50' nasty, muddy, slick rock ledge is 100% ego, peer pressure and pride based.  Ego's, pride and pressure caused a 3 hours traffic jam and left lots of people in the dark, sloppy mud on the mountain.  Ridiculous.

i think Chris said it right, on a normal day, not much traffic on the trail, you can try all day long until you make it or break it. BUT when its a big event, 2 or 3 attempts is probably enough. When we hit SlickRock and the end of December we got stuck behind a group of go-kart wanna be's and by the time they finished the line was well over 40+ rigs. Well Not a single one of us made it up the rock face or the trenched out area above without the help of a cable. For the most parts attempts were kept to a minimal once it was obvious the better built rigs couldnt even make it.
