Title: Georgia texting law now a primary offense
Post by: clark123456 on August 10, 2017, 11:44:37 AM
I've spoken with some of you about this, but something I saw this morning triggered me to raise it as a topic here.  You can now be cited for using your phone while driving without having to violate another law first.  The fine is $150 and one point on your record.

This morning I saw a cop sitting on the left side of the highway.  He was holding something up to his eyes...which looked odd and not like the normal laser/radar Gibbs I'm use to seeing.  I imagine it was binoculars.  Luckily I was not guilty at that time, so I didn't get pulled over.

Be aware that this law change is being taken full advantage of my municipalities as they use it to raise funds.

Can we be cited for changing a CD or a radio station, as well?

I think you can still eat and drive...plus some of you are still not explicitly denied the right to apply make-up...fard.

We have a motorcycle cop (Gwinnett) that is trying to win a contest:
http://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/cop-claims-hes-issued-nearly-800-tickets-texting-a/243011013

Cop claims he's issued nearly 800 tickets for texting and driving
GWINNETT COUNTY - Channel 2 Action News has learned one Gwinnett County police officer has given more tickets for texting and driving than any other officer in the state.  Ch. 2’s Amanda Cook spoke with the officer about how drivers are making it so easy for him to give the tickets
Gwinnett County Police Officer Jessie Myers said if you do anything on your phone besides make or receive a phone call, he will pull you over. He said the most common place to catch you in the act right at traffic lights.
Myer said he sees most people typing away on their phones while waiting at red lights.
"At a red light, you're still driving. according to the law. You're on a roadway, behind (the wheel of) a car, in charge of it, with a vehicle in drive," Myers said.
Myers said most people don't realize you can't access any Internet or web-based data while driving.
"All applications are web-based to some extent, including navigation," Myers said.
One driver said she was just using her phone's GPS. The law forbids that and Myers issued her a ticket.
"That's right. You can't use your navigation while driving. Unless it is a GPS-only device, such as Garmin or Tom Tom, something that is not used as a communication device," Myers said.

Neighbors complaints:
Gave a ticket while sitting at a red light putting an address in my maps.
He's real good at creeping up beside you when you're at a light.  Especially in the early morning commute when it's dark - which makes it even harder to see him.
I had just picked up my phone and doing nothing. Gave me a ticket $150 dollars.
I was at the light and was on phone and pulls me.

According to that statement a simple fix would be to put the car in park. I mean, its not like your going anywhere.

Some cops are a POS. This seems like good example.

Being in park, but drunk while the car is cranked, can still get you an award for driving under the influence.

I don't think that plan will work out.

Uhg, that bugs me.  People sitting at light after it turns green doing whatever they are doing on their phone.  Not saying they should get a ticket, but common pay attention.

It's a perfect time to validate the horn functions.

A friend said a buddy of his third cousin's sisters stepson got 2 DUIs the same way.
How you ask?
He was in the drivers seat with the radio on. The car was not running. They got him with intent to drive.

Total BS.

Moral of this? Sit in the passengers seat.

For those of us with kids that drive...I am adamantly opposed to anyone texting and driving.  It's just so damn dangerous.

does your opposition include the use of Waze and/or GoogleMaps (or crApple maps)?

I would like to to say yes because I would rather them(my kids) not do it while driving but I know that is not realistic.

Great article.

This is Jay. And he'll admit it.

Me: which way do you go to Morris.

Jay:  I don't know. I Just follow the purple line

This is 100% accurate. I feel like I have an obligation to use every bit of my unlimited data while driving. Sometimes I turn on waze and google maps at the same time. Meanwhile streaming Apple Music and watching live tv. Usually I text a few people to let them know what I'm watching and stuff.

It don't even have to be running to get a DUI
at least it didn't back in 1980 anyway
Dropped off one girl and went by a place I used to
work waiting on another girl, passed out (I mean fell asleep)
in parking lot. Got woke up by the cops...I reached and
tried to start the truck up. Hauled in and went .14 on the
breath thing. Went to court told Judge I was just sitting there
and he said boy you got there some how didn't you? Guilty

when you get in your car just turn the phone off, open the glove box and toss it in.  texting problem solved.    some of us older guys grew up with out cell phones, u had to wait till you arrived, or stopped for gas to call on a phone.  just follow that rule, and no texting fine.

As someone who lost a really close friend in college to someone who was Drunk, and Texting and driving... I have no opposition to this. If it saves a life, its worth the whole thing.

Also... not saying we need to be like the EU, but over in Switzerland they have pull offs on the highway labeled for "Texting and Talking." They have parking spots lined (like you would see in town). So you can pull over, do what you need. Then drive away. Safely.

They also have drive through prostitution cul de sacs, with "modified car washes" at the end where you pull up - pick the chick and drive to do the dirty. So maybe their whole driving situation is better than ours. Haha.

It's times like these when I wish I had one of those loud ass air horns and that's when I would use it. Would love to see the reaction.

I'm one of those old guys and I agree. I look at drive time as a break from text/email/etc.  I'm still old school. If it's that important, pick up the damn phone and call me.  We can have actual verbal communication.

Texting while driving:  evidently a near capital offense.

Kent driving a manual transmission Jeep, lighting a cigar, changing CB channels and fiddling with music of some kind... totally OK! //LOL//
