Ben (Krawler) and I will try to do a good job for you guys recording our trip, and will post nightly to this thread while we are in Moab. (We still need a photographer!)
We’re participating in the Moab Easter Jeep Safari, which offers organized, guided rides Saturday through Easter Sunday. It is put on by the “Red Rock 4-Wheelers”. www.rr4w.com (http://www.rr4w.com). There will be over 1000 jeeps in town on Friday-Saturday. We will ride 6 consecutive days, Sunday –Friday.
There is a large newspaper they put out describing the trails, guides, and sponsors, and includes all the information and forms you need to register. You can see it electronically at http://www.rr4w.com/pageview.aspx?id=27303. (http://www.rr4w.com/pageview.aspx?id=27303.)
The Easter Jeep Safari has a daily trail fee and you must submit a ride form due March 3 indicating your preference for every day. We’re hoping for a good draw early so we get everything we want. Ours arrived there and was signed for Monday. Info at: http://www.rr4w.com/pageview.aspx?id=16382.

6: Roads are difficult with considerable erosion damage repaired just enough to be passable. Water in excess of 12” is possible with mud conditions. Steps not exceeding 24”. Tall tires (33” plus) with traction added devices (lockers, limited slips) are recommended. A winch would be a plus. Enhanced suspension travel and ground clearance are helpful. Excellent driving skills are recommended.
7: Trail consists of rock; sand and considerable slickrock with many steps exceeding 24”. Steep inclines and declines are prevalent. Enhanced off road equipment is required including locking devices (front & rear), tall tires, maximum vehicle ground clearance, and tow hooks. A winch is desirable. Excellent driving skills are required. Vehicle mechanical or body damage is likely. Roll over possibilities exist.
8: Extreme trail similar to #7 except a bit more extreme. Excellent driving skills are required. Vehicle damage is likely. Equipment or mechanical damage is probable Frequent use of your winch may be required.

I just wanted to start out saying that...I HATE YOU! Secondly take lots of pics, that will make us all jealous for months to come.
-
I am upset that we do not have a photographer. >:( All the pics will be of jeeps sitting still. I will be taking the video camera and the canon big boy from work for pics. I am working on a very cool magnetic mount for my video camera so I can mount it anywhere I want. Got a 2.5" car speaker magnet that I will weld a piece of all thread rod to for the camera to mount on. Then use a lock washer and nut to tighten it on. I will be able to mount it onto the side of the Jeep anywhere I want, or under. Should be sweet! But yeah, I wish I had a photographer. :'( Journal will be taken to document the vent. These things don't happen everyday!
-
wish I could Ben but I dont get more vacation time till mid May so no chance for me...

STILL NEED A PHOTOGRAPHER / VIDEO PERSON!

I moved from Utah to GA in Feburary and have done EJS for the last five years. You will have a blast. Most all trails on the list are outstanding. If level 5 trails are your thing hit Poisen Spider Mesa. My personal favorites are Hell's Revenge and Fin's & Things. If you get a chance, do a ride with Jim Cole as a trail leader. He is outstanding. The event gets bigger and bigger each year but RR4W does a great job with the orgnaization. Enjoy the ride!
PS: I just start searching for rocks and good riders in GA......happy to find your site!
-
Welcome.. Those are my favorite.. Fins & Things is very cool. I have been out there the last 2 years. Hells Revenge is awesome also. Great advice...
-
Progress report:
Pulled all hubs on trailer axles, found worn bearings, replaced some bearings and races, all seals, 1 brake backing plate, re-assemble all Saturday.
Truck trailer wiring plug replaced with correct plug, Diesel programmer ordered, Camper cover found!

Well, figured I would put on the offroad wheels and tires and break them in b4 the trip. Broke out my new tops as well. Here is how I will take it to Moab. Made some neat water tight covers for the duster cover since the roll bar sections are not completely water proof. So anyway, just updating...

It isn't that clean now LOL!
Ben and I took a little test run today, loaded the jeeps on the 34, tooled down to Durhamtown and rode with some boys. Had a better time than we expected! Played hard on some rocks. {letseat} Rode through a lot of articulating mud holes. :P

How did it pull?

How did it pull?
We had to check and see if there was still a trailer behind us. It is sweet! It pulled the hills with ease, and I could accelerate up the steepest hills if i wanted to. We have a few adjustments to make to get it all perfectly level for the long haul, but I was very pleased today. I think we got about 16mpg too. {cool}

Great to hear, I guess yall found enough straps to work?
-
Man Doug, I thought you said you were tired! :D We had alot of fun today at the DT. I was in awe of the scale of the operation they had. It was like a theme park. I kept waiting on a cartoon mascot to come up and take a picture with Dougs little girls. But I have to say, that truck Doug has is the sweetest pulling truck I have ever riden in. It just wanted to go! The F250 we tow with at work is a dog compared to this beast! Mark, thanks for the straps! We, or should I say Doug, had a "bound to happen" moment when his strap excess blew under the trailer and caught the tire and sheared the entire handle of the ratchet! We heard a pop and I saw the remains of the strap fluttering back in the road. But the strap held! Just the handle bit the dust. Lucky! We have a few things to take care of on the trailer like welding some rings on in the rear center and one of the axle hubs was very hot so other than that just a few nit picky minor things. I do have to say... I LOVE MY 4.88S!!!!! I don't think I used the clutch but 3 times on the rocks! I was amazed at the crawling difference! We did find the rocks out there too and played for a good bit on them. Lots of loose 2ft sized boulders all over this hill and no particular lines of travel so I forged a new trail and ended up with a bit of carnage. I hit a tree on the new soft top and just scraped the sewn edge a bit, put a great new sandpaper scratch in the rear flare from that tree and broke my rear license plate bracket on another. It was a really tight spot. Also ended up with a new dent somehow just infront of my drivers mirror {ehm} not sure when? Found a cool ravine called Cougar canyon and climbed some nasty hills out! But mud won the day. Once they add some rocks around it will be alot better. The little rock garden trail was fun, just let it walk in 4lo. Loved it! No more clutch burning!!! But enough rambling... here is a short video of the rock hill we played on.
I will upload more when I can. {toast}
-
nice video ben. it reminded me of the guy that moved up to the northwest territory an homesteaded. he built everything by hand, cabin, furniture, canoe, etc. he videos everything by himself on a tripod. it was on pbs this weekend. cool..
p.s. i like the new color on the canyons in video.... orange looks good..
-
HA HA! The mud does weird things to wheels. GA clay. I uploaded another video from cougar canyon. Doug climbs after the first TJ.
-
looks like the new gears worked well for you Ben. I still want to go to DT one day so I can see the place for myself.
-
Yeah, it was worth $20. If you can deal with the mud it is pretty fun. It has so much potential. Just add rocks!

x2. this place will definitely be awesome in a years time.
not sure what time the trails close tho...might should look into that.
-
Maybe around 4:30, looks like yall had some fun, I want to play on the rock hill, Is the rock hill and the small rock garden at the truck park area with the mounds of dirt in it (start of trail 2 I think) the only rocks yall found. Jimmy and I rode the rock garden a handfull of times.
-

We actually crawled rocks in 2 places. The big area right beside the paved road, and another that had about 6 nice piles, and dirt mounds as well.
There are a few "canyons" we ran that would be incredible if he;ll just buy a few loads of large stones and dump um and spread um.

sounds like the only rocks we missed where the ones by the paved road. the other rocks you talked about is where I drug my trailer back to. I was glad that I did also because where I ripped the steering a part was just through the woods about 50 or 75 yards.
-
Loaded, and parked in a sandy creek bottom parking lot, and had no problems.

So much for my new Solid Diff cover. Steering binding, so we decided to grind on it. Went through it. Factory rubi cover back on now.
I had just gone to bed Saturday night when the Gwinnett Police started banging on my front door.
Mr Reynolds?
Yes.
Is this your license plate?
Gee, I don’t know, where did it come from?
It was taken from a stolen trailer tonight in Barrow county.
Was it my trailer too?
I don’t know, but this tag is registered to a 2007 trailer, and the tag was on an old, rusty trailer. Here is a case # in case you have an issue later.
So I had to drive over to see if my trailer was in fact stolen. My trailer was where it’s supposed to be. The tag nuts and bolts were neatly laid on the trailer, so I re-installed it, and headed back to the house.
Strange stuff going on round here.
-
So you can steer more than 20 degrees now! {toast} You will need everybit of it! The trailer thing is weird. Barrow county does not suprise me though. ;)
-
Who ground through the cover? :-X
Jeeps look good on that trailer boys! {toast}
-
You can't be too mad.. I mean, ultimately, they just borrowed your tag. I'd say.. it seems like they had every intention of returning it 'cause they left the nuts and bolts in an easy to find area so they wouldn't lose them and could just slap it back on when they brought it back. Shoot, they might've even left you a little something like a dollar...
But seriously, sucks about your diff cover. Glad you can turn and sucks about the trailer tag thing. But luckily, they didn't take the whole trailer and destroy it or something.
-
Well, not many posts from me for the last few days, going nuts getting truck, trailer, and Jeep ready for Moab, and a list of supplies that would shock you. AND getting the Tahoe ready for Linda's/girls spring break to her Mom and Dad's in Tampa.
So..... 5 hours til we start to load, and 7 to departure.
COME ON ADAM! GET OUT OF THAT PUBLIX ON TIME!!
Bad news is we're going the long way through Amarillo/Albuquerque, as there is more snow in Denver/Vail Friday/Saturday, and some even in MOAB Saturday. Ugh.

Rained all Thursday night
Sun all day Friday with constant head winds of 30, gusting 40, may be 50 tomorrow. Ugh.
Spending the night in Gallup, to Moab in the morning.
Snow forecast. :)
Wish you all were here!
However far you think it is, its a lot further. 27+ hours straight, and 300 more miles to go, and same straight through on the way back. Truck sucked fuel cause we filled it with drinks, waters, coolers, tools, clothes, etc. + 2 diesel tanks (thank god for those, best idea I had or we would have run it dry 1 time) 2 gas tanks, tops, clothes, etc. And the weather!! Bad. Getting about 9mpg into the headwind and gained 6000 ft in altitude. Crossed the continental divide just before the hotel.
Goodnite!
-
Wow, sounds like you are making good time despite the weather. Thanks for the updates. I'm tuning in for your live broadcast. {toast}
