Title: New freon outrageous prices
Post by: Cannonballkev on August 02, 2017, 10:15:14 PM
A buddy of mine owns a repair shop, he posted this on FB.  Holy crap!

A short rant... I had to take a 2016 Jeep to the dealership to have the A/C recharged after a repair. Guess what it costs to add 16 ounces of new R1234yf refrigerant to a Jeep!?!  Try $750.00...

He said all new vehicles after next year will have the r1234 freon in it, $40 recharges are going away.

I had to have my house a/c charged this year (it's an annual event).  This time my cost was about 50% higher than last year (2lbs was $282 with the service charge).  The guy told Kell that a few of the Freon facilities have caught on fire this year, impacting production and driving costs higher...i couldn't find any real or fake news about it.

I just replaced a broken AC line in my jeep and had it vacuum tested and then recharged with Freon.  It was about $75 I think, give or take a few.

Fake news, I have several guys that do work at our stores and they are raising prices on the old stuff due to the change over. Supply/demand. Casteel still has their free freon deal, could be an option for you on your home.

Yeah, I would have to just use the two at 60 for that price...nope.

A 10lb tank of R1234YF is $900.00 The EPA is not requiring the car companies to switch, But they are incentivizing them too. The EPA has no immediate plans to stop production of R134a. So it will be around for awhile longer. Chrysler and GM are switching to R1234yf but so far Ford is not.

Casteel did my upstairs replacement.  Supposedly it has a lifetime warranty.

I've had great success with Home Comfort Heating and Air, so I might go with them for the lower floor.

Those prices are crazy. I'm thinking about picking up a 30# can of R134 just to have for future issues later.

I really dread the day the Vette needs AC service, it's still R12. I don't even have gauges for that anymore.

I have R12 gauges if needed.  A few years back I scored a full, 99.99% pure R12 - 30# cylinder for $25.  Damn thing is worth about $3,000 now! Not to count the 1lb cans of R12 I have.  My Chevelle still has the R12 in it.  I opted to not convert it when I did my resto.

I'm sure my dad has a set or two also.
Picking up a tank of 134 isn't a bad idea.  NAPA use to sell freeze12. It was a synthetic r12 equivalent.  Can't find it anymore.

I can get another set for around 30 bucks or so. Getting R12 is another story.

I thought that Freeze12 (R12a) was a propane or something like that. I do know it was flammable. For some reason I thought that would be a bad idea having a flammable gas in the condenser in the front of the car in case of a crash. Just imagine the carnage if it was in a Pinto....  //LMAO//

I thought the Pinto only exploded in a rear end crash with a bicycle or heavier object. But why take chances.

My point, death from the front and rear....   //LMAO//
