Title: wrangler owners out there...
Post by: Xterra on March 27, 2008, 09:08:01 AM
is it illegal to have your doors completely removed while driving?

i just saw this on tellico4x4 so was wondering...
"Want to run the summer with Safari or no doors at all? Do it legally by easily installing the Safari Mirror package from Olympic."

I think some states have an issue with you not having mirrors. I dont think they care about doors. The problem lies with were the mirrors mount.

In GA you only need one rear facing mirror to be legal.

I run mine all summer without doors. Just have a rear view and side mirrors. I have a set that fits into the slot where the hinge is. No worries.

I asked three different police officers the first summer I had my Jeep just to make sure and yes you only have to have the one mirror on the windshield to be legal in GA.  Also found it in the state code.

As far as mounting your mirrors with doors off I just got some flat bar with two holes in each end and a pair of bolts so I could mount my mirrors to the hinges, but I don't even use that anymore.

Richard, if you have these for a TJ I may be interested in buying them if you want to sell. As for the mirrors... if anybody is interested I will part with them for $30. I payed $60 for them from quadratec.

per GA law, at least one mirror is required to provide a view to the rear of at least 200 feet. that means that if your doors are off and you load the Jeep up with a bumch of crap that obstructs that view, then there should be at least one outside rear view mirror.

however, if your license bears a restriction that stated you must operate a vehicle with left and right outside rear view mirrors, you must comply with that or it is a violation of a license restriction.

Yeah I left out the unrestricted view part, but when my top is off, my Jeep is empty.

What would cause someone to get that restriction on their license?

What about the one across from there with my wife, he had to jump out in the middle of traffic and run give me a ticket because he just couldnt wait for the light to change green and me pull into a parking lot. Then question me why I didnt pull over to the right when I am sitting 4 lanes from the curb and would have 10 ft and four lanes of traffic to cross, without running the light, to do so. Just for an expired tag on my wifes car, which she had, just not on the tag, so I had to show up for court for her registration!

Then what about the time where the cop ask me to step out of the vehicle because I had a current tag applied (Dated) for on the vehicle and the actual plate in the drivers side along with my insurance, registration, and bill of sale. (I just sold the vehicle and was driving it 5 miles from my work to his house, so all of my stuff was gathered up in a big unorganized pile.) Of course he was trying to accuse me of stealing the vehicle, which he shouldnt have pulled over in the first place.

Nah.  Well, I've only got the 1, but it was pretty uncalled for in my opinion.

hear hear  ;D

now that we are swapping war stories mine sounds pretty stupid. i was heading home one night really late on pleasant hill rd. going about 78-80 in a 45 zone (was in a bad mood and no cars... was like 1 AM) so i got lasered in front of the police station that i found out was there AFTER i got the ticket for 34 over. "go figure". being underage, was very very close to losing my license and not being able to off road anymore... lol. well thats my story for my one and only ticket ever.

opinions are like um... yea...

and yes. b1pig is related to my profession. i bear no shame.
cops have jackasses just like any other profession. some are worse than others anyway. not everyone is cut from the same cloth. i've pissed off my fair share of people, too.

that said.....
a person could have a restriction placed on their license by the examiner based on a medical issue, eyesight, or inability to turn around. it depends.

ugh.... that's bad.
I just bought the mirror relocation TJ brackets from CSE offroad for $25.  The safety factor and vision is worth far more than the cost.
