Title: Lawn mowers
Post by: tjsahara00 on May 17, 2020, 06:23:08 PM
Several years ago I bought a Craftsman 42" lawn mower. Worked great until my father in law had to get rid of his cows. So I took back part of the pasture and made my yard a whole lot bigger. The 42" just took so damn long to cut it all. Plus I have to cut around the old homestead now he's passed.

Friday I decided after looking and researching on a Bad Boy ZT Elite 60".
Man what a difference....I love this mower.

How fast will it go?

When I bought my craftsman new 20 years ago it was supposed to go 5mph.  It'll still cook, but not quite as fast.

Top speed is 7 mph
I thought that sounded slow
but it is pretty fast. When you add
the 60" cut .....I was left wishing
I had more grass to cut...lol

Yeah, that's what I was thinking...very fast and wide makes it a relatively quick cut.

How long to clear the 5 acres?

Reduced from a little over 4 hrs
down to 2 hours. I will get a better
idea after the 2nd time I cut it.

What other mowers did you look at and what made you finally choose this one?

The shorter it is the quicker it will cut it.
Yes, I'm a genius. Just ask me.

I'm rough on mowers especially after reclaiming some
former cow pasture. I saw the Bad Boy at Tractor Supply
and started doing some research. I learned how almost
all the mowers at the big box stores have stamped decks.
I already knew I didn't want to buy from Lowe's or Home
Depot again.

I did research and considered several other name brands
and was considering the Ariens IkonXD which was cheaper
but there was so many small things I didn't like as well as
the Bad Boy. Everything from the location of the parking
brake, the layout of the controls, the location of the gas tank.
There was a local dealer in Gainesville that I've been in
before and just didn't care for, a little to pushy for a sale.

Now for the Bad Boy there is a dealer in Dahlonega called
Anderson Feed. Family owned business that also is a dealer
for Mahindra tractors and the Roxor. They have been selling
the Bad Boy for 10 years. They came across as just hard
working good country folks. I was first going to get the Bad Boy
MZ Magnum 54'' for $3499 but decided to go with the ZT Elite
with 60'' for $4999. It's basically an entry level commercial
grade mower with serviceable transaxle. On one mower I had
the sealed tranaxle was doomed. The ZT Elite has 6 deck wheels
instead of 4 which I think is a big deal for what I cut.

I did spend more than I originally planned on but my history
of buying a Lowe's or Home Depot riding lawn mower every
3 maybe 4 years. That and the added amount that I cut each
week...something had to give.

Time will tell but I plan on this being the last mower I buy.

That has to be a rough ride for 5 acres.  Why a ZTR, are there lots of obstacles?  Nice looking unit.

Nice mower. I bought a Toro commerical grade a few years back and they cut quickly and fast. Bought mine using 0%.

Welded decks are tough.

I was able just to purchase without financing.

A lot in the front yard.....trees, flower beds, big playscape etc
Plus I like mowing in straight lines and never in the same direction
twice. I can't stand the cutting in a circle until your to the center. LOL
Three of my biggest sections only have a couple of trees each.

I am in the market for a new zero turn and have been looking at Gravely, Hustler and Bad Boy.  I had a chance to checkout/test drive a Bad Boy 54" ZT Elite.  It is appropriately named.  It is a "Bad Boy".  Really well made and thoughtful design for a mower and the seat is really comfortable.  It's my front runner right now.

I just bought a Toro Timecutter 60” zero-turn. So far so good about two months in.

For me it was about the engine and the hydro gears. The Toro I bought has the same engine and hydros they use on their entry level commercial units. It has the ZT-2800 drives. I’d avoid units with the EZT-2200 as it’s a non serviceable unit designed for entry level mowers.

Mine was $3800 on sale at Tractor Supply.

I have 44 hrs on mine now.
The ZT Elite comes with the 3100 hydro gear that is serviceable. That was a deciding factor for me too.
Stay away from the sealed ones.

The ZT Elite is a “residential” mower but is essentially their entry level commercial mower.  No stamped deck, all heavy gauge steel welded.

Yesterday, I unexpectedly entered the market looking for a new lawn mower...justification found.   [cheers]

My current yard is not very large, but I have plans to change that in the next couple years.  I'm thinking 48" cut so I can get it on my utility trailer, but maybe a 52-54" cut.  Defintely not a 60" cut.

I'm thinking Toro or BadBoy, but I still need to look at other options (Husq, JD, Cub Cadet (unlikely)).  I want a servicable transmission/transaxle, as the current failure on my tractor is transmisison related and it's not serviceable.  I imagine I need entry-level professional.

I also want a hitch/receiver/hole so I can tow a little dump trailer around and move my chipper easier, which it appears BadBoy doesn't support :(

I'm pretty sure the dump trailer is what finally killed the Crasftman  [rolleyes]

That Kubota is what ZT Mower dreams are made of.  The meats on the rear and the operator seat alone is awesome.  I would mow anything I could with that thing.  I am trying to figure out how to get that suspension seat in my Jeep.  ;-)

I've been spoiled the past 19 years.  I have 1 acre but most of my neighbors have very small yards.  When John Wieland built the neighborhood, they setup the homeowners fees to include lawn service.  Everyone Monday they mow, edge, trim, and blow.  Twice a year, they trim the bushes and trees, fertilize the lawn,  and put out pinestraw.  They get January off but on months they don't mow, they blow each week.  It was $100/mo up until two years ago and now it's $125/mo.

Yeah, that would be very nice to have.  The quote I got for my yard was $80/week

Since the accident in July, I have been having the yard cut and edged.
$60/Week. It is nice not having to cut it during the hottest part of the year.
I enjoy getting out and cutting the grass and maintaining the yard and garden.

I'd love to pay 125 a month for that service

This weekend I tried going a different route:  fix the mower I have (before throwing thousands at a new one). As one of the YouTube guys says, "she's already f*ckered, you ain't gonna f*ck her more." YouTube can be inspiring, and now I'm basically a hydrostatic transmission expert, except for understanding how they work :)

I removed the transmission (Hydro-gear light duty), drained it, cracked it open, and checked all of the parts for wear and damage. Nothing funky going on inside that I could determine.  I was focused on the pump and the "motor," but those seemed well (tight tolerances/fit).  The fluid was nasty, but not much build-up of shaving/silt on the magnet, and no chunks either.  Filter is really just a screen, but it was clean too.

I put it back together, but the RTV was still curing so I didn't get to fill it and test.

I have a theory that the overflow/expansion tank may be where the issue originated, but I won't know until tomorrow when I pull it off.  I should have pulled it off earlier, but I didn't think about that possibly being the issue until I had it back together.   My theory is the fluid in the main housing expanded into the expansion tank, but it isn't being retracted from the expansion tank, possible because the overflow hose is broken.  So maybe the main housing was low on fluid, which caused poor performance (cavitation).(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201005/60818dac71c72d16a5ef281c6f4b5bdd.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201005/32f093101fadade48d42b77783597fe1.jpg)

Tony, you'll have to explain to us more about this "different route" you took.  Sounds like you had good justification to ditch that POS and grab a new one -- and chose not to.  Is it related to this "fiscal responsibility" thing I've heard of???

It's Clark, bruh.  in a manner of speaking, it's tha financial responsibility thing (I think 'fiscal' is only related to government).  I am, at some point, going to find the 'perfect' house/land/shop setup.  I don't know if that will be 5 acres of rolling hillside, or 5 acres of trees, so I don't know if I'll need a lawn mower or a tractor with a mower attachment.  I am trying to limp this current mower along until I can know with certainty what I need.  And, honestly, if I can spend under 200 bucks on this thing amd get it going, that'd be great.  It's not a POS...it's just old and the transmission may be the weakest point on the thing. Engine and deck are good, body is ok, but if she doesn't move, she can't cut and then what's the point.

@clark123456  is this mower a standard lawn tractor or zero turn?  I see I differential so I am guessing a lawn tractor.

Also, my neighbor across the street has his house for sale.  10 acres- ~4ish grass, 6 woods.  We could be neighbors...but I am not supervising your Jeep repairs 😆

Regular lawn tractor, not zero turn.  I don't really need zero turn as it would only save me a few minutes on my current lawn, which got me to look at garden tractors, which led to the "f*ck it, I am all in on a sub compact with all of the attachments" before I came back down to earth and realized I only have 3/4 acres for now.

Send me a link/address/etc for that house /property, please.

Buddy, pal, I wouldn't expect YOU to supervise...that's my job; be at the farm early Saturday morning and we'll get going on the next project.

Picked up a new Exmark Radius E today. With the $1,000 rebate and 0% financing for 48 months it seemed like too good of a deal to miss. On top of that they paid the sales tax as well and offered the upgraded suspension seat.

One of the pros there when I was shopping said it’s the best upgrade you can buy. I assume it’s hydraulic since it’s adjustable, but supposedly is like riding on a cloud of TTs

Nice buy Tmac, I love my little Exmark, it may actually cut better than the big Kubota in terms of level and sheer blade speed. What size deck did you get?

I ended up with the 44". I went back and forth with that and the 48, but I have a 60" gate on one side of the yard and it would be nice to not have to pull up the chute every time I go through it.

Finally made a decision and pulled the trigger on a 54” Bad Boy Maverick.  Ordered a couple of upgrades and should have it in a couple of weeks.  These things are built like tanks.  I’m certain this will be the last mower I ever buy.

Off of there website I bought 3 adapters and 3 ripper blades for $73.99.
My blades on the Bad Boy are still good and only been sharpened once.
I put the ripper (mulch) blades on the top like I saw on a bunch of YouTube
videos. I cut part of my yard after I put them on yesterday. It was still a little
wet and high like everyone's right now, but I could see the difference. Shavings
were a lot smaller and it shot the grass way further than before. I was very
pleased with my first cut.
