Does anyone have a description of the trails?

Are there any basic requirements/guidelines to successfully complete the various difficulty levels (easy, intermediate, difficult)?

The difficult last year where weak other than the El presidente put in by Gatr. Hopefully they will have some better this year. The obstacle course was fun for a little bit though.

I have another thread going for a local camp ground with spots reserved already. I will bump it to the top. That way if anybody wants to camp with the group they can.

Don't expect anything hard for your Jeep. The groups will be massive and take forever to do the trails. If I can get my schedule to open up and I can go, I'll be on the obstacle courses all day if they're anything like last year. I am not counting on being able to go though :(

Registered for jeepfest now trying to decide what trails to do. First how long are the trails like distance and time wise? like 15 minutes? or 2 hours?. Also how difficult is difficult? it says you only need 33s and recommends a winch? sounds kinda intermediate. Just dont want to venture into anything like el presidente on last years trail. Thanks!!

Everything is pretty easy, the trail to el presidente had more bumps then the easy and medium trails last year.

^This
The "intermediate" trails last year were a complete joke. Easy trails must have just been a dirt road.

Ok..having not been to this before and not pre registered, but interested in checking it out for a day, is that even an option?
Do they have "day of" registratoin and if so is it completely crazy and not worth attempting? Share a little experience on this one if you will... many thanks,

they have had registration on event day but you still pay for the 3 day deal, they don't allow payment per day...at least the last 2 years they haven't.  And yes, it was pretty busy in the registration lines.  I would do it ahead of time if you want to go.

Also registration is only needed if you intend on doing the obstacle course or trail rides. If you just want to show up and check out the vendors and observe, there is no need to register.

Saw that ...thanks... is there a local address for this or simple directions as to where in Jasper this is? I know it sounds like a crazy Q, but I can't seem to find it clearly stated on the web site.

I just spoke to the jeepfest hot line folks and understand the location is nearly imposiible to miss just north of Jasper jeep off of 515... so that shoudl be good. I also understnad that both trail ride registration and event registration will begin Thursday at noon and again Friday at 8:00 am for those like me that want to check it out but were simply too show to pre-register...
I will be the one in my new tan GATR ball cap!!

Where else can you trash a grocery store parking lot and street with mud and the sheriff waves you thru and the fire department hoses it off.

If I can get away from the Yellow Daisy Festival soon enough, I might be able to go on the night ride.

John, are you planning to drive the Jeep up there every day, park the trailer and Jeep up there nightly, or transport the Jeep on the trailer daily?  I'm trying to figure out the lowest risk and easiest path...which are likely two conflicting goals.

I'm planning to drive the jeep each day. I put the spare tire rack and tire back on this weekend in preparation for it.  I figured it will be the easiest.

I cant remember what all i signed up for?  will have to check thur/fri when im at home base i guess.   they say there will be a signup hut?  i guess that will be someplace by home base, I am looking to make the thru. night ride, if i can get packed get to the camp site, unpack, setup and get to where we start.  i have a few phone numbers to call so hopefully those of us doing the thur. night ride can hookup.

My plans are to get home thur. around 12:30, pack.   and leave by 1:30..   should take me about 2hr to get to the camp site (never been), so im guessing i should be setup by 5:30ish. the ride i think starts at 7.

Thur. Reg. is 12pm - 7pm at HomeBase (main site - cant miss it)
Thur. Night Ride Lineup 7pm  at HomeBase (I would gander look for other Jeeps lining up lol  )

If it's at the same spot as last year, you can't miss it. When you entered the main entrance you dead ended into it, going left or right to the 2 parking areas.

Find home base of Jeepfest, drive farther north, there is a BBQ restaurant on the right, turn next to the restaurant and go down the road and there is a camp ground not even half a mile on the right. Google Talona creek campground.

I appreciate the offer Chris but I'm going to have to turn down the offer.

I won't be able to make it out to JeepFest this year and that makes me really sad. This would have been my one year anniversary of offroad events. A combination of lack of funds, jeep not quite running right, other responsibilities, but most importantly the pain in my arm when I shift. I can't even drive 20 miles to work without shooting pain in my arm, and with a second shoulder surgery pending next week I have a lot of things to do.

Here's the crew for the night ride last night.  Overall, it was a decent ride.  A little congested to get started on the trail but then things got rolling and there was a nice little creek crawl.  I have some video on the GoPro that I will edit and post up when done.

I just realized the GA/SC game starts at 3:30.  I'll be leaving Jasper around 2:30 so I can have my ass on a barstool at The Roswell Tap in time for kickoff.  GO DAWGS!

I actually think its the perfect time for a bye, Clemson and SC back to back is brutal to start the season.  Next bye is before the Florida game.

Road the obstacle course today, lockers required for sure. Just enough mud on one hill climb that  is denying one ton, v8, sticky rigs. Hopefully it dries up some more.

We did not get a spot at the "club row" this year for some reason but the guys that are there are setting up a base camp in the parking lot. We will be in the lot to the right when you come in the main entrance. We will have a couple of canopies set up. There should be a jeep withe a banner sitting by it most of the day.

Well I would have to say I'm a little disappointed that the obstacle course was closed to the registered jeeps yesterday. With out any of the venders set up or ready to sell anything really did make it suck! We didn't go on the trail rides we scheduled yesterday just didn't make the first one at 10 and didn't feel like going to the one at 1:00. We enjoyed talking with the few GATR we did find. It sucks we didn't have a place set up to meet. Cheryl and I had a canopy set up for a while in the jeep parking lot for a couple hr till we went to the show and shine. We will have the blue canopy set up in the jeep parking lot to the right. If you have a GATR banner of any kind Please stop by and park by us.
Jeepfest is the first time Cheryl and I ever heard of GATR and it's just a shame to me that we don't have something worked out for this wonderful club to not have a place for new jeepers to stop by and get information. So we didn't get on club row! Let's do what it takes to let people know about this club and the great people I have come to know and love over the years!  //SLAMIN// //SLAMIN//

Vendors being closed Friday was a let down. They sheriff on duty ,when I checked in around 3, said he had seen around 300 jeeps come thru for registration and his shift started at noon.. Most must have registered and left for trail rides.

Ice cream man did tell me there were around 500 jeeps on the night ride Thursday. He said one group got lost and wound up head on with another group.. The trails are not difficult, but 100 jeeps backing up on what is close to an atv trail (after dark) must have been eventful.  I'm sure some of our guys were there as witness?

Just got back home about an hour ago... Had a great day, then again, any day with my wife is a great day.  Personally, I'm a bit confused about this whole no space on club row thing.  It would have appeared we could have set up an ez-up along the obstacle course berm and did our banner there like the 500 other club did... there were plenty of empty spaced along the vender/club row in addition.

In any case, Colleen & I did the trail ride at 4:00 and ended up on "Sharp Top - Difficult". Honestly, it wasn't worth getting the Jeep dusty or dirty. I was very disappointed in what was classified as "Difficult", 1 hill climb!

I saw Mr. Mike's CJ in the parking lot, and ran into Oscar Mike 2.0 and Jingo in the staging area for the trail ride. Maybe next year, if they run out of space again, we can set up a tent still have an organized/staffed tent on the berm of the course like everyone else.

On a positive side, they had more vendors and I ate at Bub-Ba-Q and determined they serve really good vittles.

On a really positive side, the money I spent on this is for a really good cause and for that, I will be registering again for next year regardless of my participation in the rides or course. This is a great event for why it does what it does.  //SLAMIN//

Shark top sucked, so John and I ran it backwards with another leader which put us back at Sandy Bottom so we could do another trail.  We ended up getting in on a run of Jeepers Alley.

Pretty easy at first, a lot of mud, but nothing a decently built jeep couldn't handle.  Then we got to a creek crossing where a group in front of us was considering turning around due to the difficulty of the climb on the other side, so we pulled off the trail to make room.  That crew decided to just winch up the ledge.

Our crew decided winching was not a great idea, so two small open/open XJ s pounded the climb and cleared it with ease.  Then I went and after trying slow-n-go a few times decided to power through it and had no issues. Then John went and I ended tow strapping him to clear it.

Then crazy ensued...a stock tj on 37s, non Rubicon, stood his JEEP up on two wheels and there was a bunch of non-positive crunching and clanking noises that followed.  It turned out he broke a d35 axle shaft and cleaned the front and rear ring gear of teeth (or one of many things that allow a driveshaft to spin without tires moving).  I have another theory about what is going on with the rear axle, but it doesn't matter.  The wheel wanted to walk out, so the tow strap and a tree/log/hi-lift approach to keeping the axle shaft and wheel under the JEEP was used very successfully!  John had to pull this dude up a pretty major hill climb, with some winching, to get him out so he can get a trailer to grab the jeep.

Then a yj went for it and broke his driver's axle u joint.  No problem...he's still rolling with the rear wheels providing power...until the axle shaft takes out the ball joints (reminded me of Morris Mountain with some whiny know it all (@jeepson33s) :)).   The property owners were in our group and were able to grab one of their tractors to help out...but it took an extremely long time (reminded me of 2013 Windrock).

On a positive note, the brother that owns the property rode a long way with me and he said to let him know if there are any problems next year for gatr on club row and he'll solve those problems.  I have the dude's cell number if we have problems next year.

Two big problems I saw that could be easily rectified:  planning/management of activities (who's on first) and rig requirements enforcement.

The owner of the land said he considered opening sections of the land (fields) for each club to have access to use for camping/meeting, but suggested bathroom and shower access would be a problem. The bathroom issue can be solved with a port-a-Jon.  He said he did a bike ride across Georgia once where they had portable showers, so that could possibly be an option.  With the heat and the bugs (bug spray), I think a shower is a must.

Nothing is going to change and the land owner has nothing to do with it. It is being run the way it's run because the sheriffs department is in charge. I have asked several times if they wanted us as a 4 wheeling club to help organize and rate trails. Hints the reason a lot of weren't there

The jeep on 37s was on a Dana 35 and a low pinion Dana 30, so poor setup.  Too much wheel speed is my guess for the yj.

I had a lot of wheel speed too, with a very heavy tire wheel combination, but I'm running chromoly shafts up front in a Dana 30hp and full case locker.  I also had my green lights on and Choke attached to the rear gate, so I'm sure that helped.

No requirements for trails and too many inexperienced drivers on slightly more difficult trails. There is nothing there that SHOULD break an axle as long as the driver knows how to drive. JMHO.

Exactly. No one broke on my ride, but people started panicking when the jeep in front of them had to back up and try a different line. This resulted in people trying to nail it up and over the ledge. It was a small ledge with exposed roots. Not hard, but there is no spotter and as mentioned before experience levels varied widely.

My Dad (72) and my daughter (11) and I (age not important) just left Jeep fest and had a blast. We spent time on two trail rides and the vendor tents... found a great local sub shop for lunch and money all went to a good cause... proudly displayed my CORE stickers on my Mossy Oak Jeep and my ultra cool Georgia Trail Riders hat which I have learned I like better on backwards with the GEORGIATRAILRIDERS.com front and center... only shortfall is it would have been real cool to have bumped in to other GATR members while there.... looking forward to seeing all at GATR fest.

Unless it changed drastically over night, there is no way more than 10% of jeeps could walk that creek ledge.  Speed was needed...but maybe at different starting points in the climb.

I was told that home base will be at a different location next year. They've out grown the current location.

My wife and I had a great time. We rode sackets bend today one muddy hill climb and some ruts and 2 creek crossings. I guess im still a noob when it comes to trails but we didnt have any problems and quite personally was expecting something a bit more being a intermediate trail. In our group i was the only one with a cb (thanks to GATR requirements) I dropped to the rear so i could let the leader know everyone was clear.
The hill climb was muddy when i tried it and i was declined making it to the top. Today was redemption day  //;D//

No requirements for trails and too many inexperienced drivers on slightly more difficult trails. There is nothing there that SHOULD break an axle as long as the driver knows how to drive. JMHO.

That makes sense...

Exactly. No one broke on my ride, but people started panicking when the jeep in front of them had to back up and try a different line. This resulted in people trying to nail it up and over the ledge. It was a small ledge with exposed roots. Not hard, but there is no spotter and as mentioned before experience levels varied widely.

Unless it changed drastically over night, there is no way more than 10% of jeeps could walk that creek ledge.  Speed was needed...but maybe at different starting points in the climb.

They may have dug it out after your run Saturday. I had to wait for a tractor to pull out the jeep Sunday morning, so he may have altered it. I had my go pro running on that trail...if I can find some time to edit it

That makes a lot of sense for what likely happened and for doing it.  If you didn't break, it was the fun / challenging part of the trail!
