Title: Bit by the gun bug
Post by: tjsahara00 on January 13, 2016, 10:11:48 AM
Well you remember I bought my first hand gun in December.
Ruger LC9s and have been to the range 3 times. Started thinking
about getting a full size. Did some research and watched a bunch
of youtube videos. Not ready to spend the bucks on the big name
hand guns yet so I ordered me a Taurus PT809 yesterday. Should
be here by Saturday.

Keep you eyes out for gun stores that get old service weapons, they usually go at a real good price.

Dana Safety Supply right near Allsouth had a batch of Glock 22's from the Spalding County Sheriff's office a few years ago.  They had about 20 when I went in and got to pick the best looking one.  They are well used but also well maintained.  I got it for either $250 or $300, something like that. Great full size .40 cal

Personally Kevin, i freaking love Taurus stuff, lotsa hate out there for just the few minor things that they have had problems with. I have owned several PT 92 variants, an 809, and Beth carries a ultralight .38 as well, loved every one of them and never had any issues. I have been looking at the G2 PT 111s myself, for a backup/hideaway/under desk/whatever gun. The 809 cant be beat for the money with the features and capacity IMHO.. if you dont like it let me know and ill take it off your hands lol

like @tcdawg said, used service stuff is cheap, and usually well maintained. aimsurplus.com always has that used stuff, especially Glocks, u can buy em online and have em shipped to an FFL, my local guy charges $20 ea for the transfer. Also i cant remember if i have the name right, but maybe "the armory" in Athens does alot of police trade in stuff

I had look at several gun shops and they didn't have it.
Big Woods said their supplier was sold out. Cherokee said
they didn't carry the 809. Checked on buying thru Buds and
it was listed $289. I ask Bobby about the shipping to a FFL.

I was in town yesterday and thought hell I'll check the shop
there (Fox Hole) and they ordered me one for $295 out the
door. Think he said their supplier had about a dozen.

If you buy a used glock, you take it to the glock manufacturer and let them go through it. Doesn't take very long and is in Atlanta.

Picked up my Taurus 809 (right at 30oz)....hadn't got to shoot it yet
little bit more beefy than Ruger LC9s (17oz I believe)
Takes a hair longer to load that 17 round clip....

Shot 4 clips yesterday with the Taurus 809
first 2 magazines had about 5 jams which pissed
me off but then the last 2 magazines only had one.

I was all over the place getting used to the sights
then on my last magazine I got better....think I
do better when I just click them off instead of
thinking and aiming real hard.

Also the shells fly out more back at you than to the
side like the LC9s....

If your jamming try a different brand ammo. Also on aiming. A good rule of thumb that helps us at distance shooting is Aim small miss small. So instead of aiming at a bullseye aim for a corner or line on the target

and check your grip. Alot of polymer framed guns are kinda sensitive to a soft grip and will fail to feed or eject when "limp wristed" ... not saying thats the prob, its common tho

those times it jammed.....
it was like it tried to feed 2 shells
I would pull the slide back and let the one
shell fall out......by the last clip it didn't do it

I will see how it does the next time when I plan
on running a couple hundred rounds through

In my limited experience handguns are harder to shoot well and accurately than long guns.  When in the army I was on the post rifle team.  I tried the pistol team's arms a few times, and it was very hard to get a persistent pattern.  With the 1911s just getting on the paper was hard at first.

You'll be pleased. I've had two. Never had a misfire. I am about to add grip extensions. I don't have the biggest hands but the slim feels a little small so I need a little more to hold.

I'm right with you Kevin. I've  bought 2 hand guns & 3 rifles. Over 1k rounds of 9mm, 1800 of 7.62 x 54r, & 2800 of .22.  I think I'm done for a while.  Well, I do need a few rounds of .38 special.
I got a 8 gun cabinet from Home Depot. Lined it with carpet & got it mounted.  Next day I got a flier from Tractor Supply that had a 64 gun, 1 hour fire safe for $800. Pissed, I was.

Well.....
I switch in between daily carry  LC9s 7 & 9 rounds
and 740slim with 6 rounds. Tried carrying my PT809
with 17 rounds but just felt a little bulky and more
noticeable......so today I bought this  Taurus PT111 G2
that's holds 12 rounds. Really fit's my hand good.
Selling the PT809 to a co-worker

Ha Ha!!!!!!
I got the same gun but in not SS about 2 weeks ago. Academy Sports had it for  $299 & you got a free Heritage Rough Rider .22 revolver free.
I thought it was a awesome deal as I was looking to buy one of them.
I love the textured grip.

I ordered 2 Taurus 24/7 magazines for it. They are 17 rounds each. YouTube says they work perfectly.

My only complaint is the trigger. It kinda sucks but we'll get used to it.

If you get any 17 round 24/7 magazines for the G2 the Taurus made ones will not work without being modified. Other brands are suppose to fit.

I have my .38 special traded for a SKKY 9mm. Now I have all my hand guns in one caliber.

I like the new Taurus PT111 G2...shot good no problems.

I believe it will complete my different CC needs.
Ruger LC9s 7 round @ 17.2 oz
Taurus PT740 slim 6 rounds @ 19 oz
Taurus PT111 G2 12 rounds @ 22 oz

Now one of the new 20 round mags for the 995TS had
some jams. I will mark it and see if it does it again.

I modded the 24/7 magazines to work in the Pt111. It tried with a file but broke out the angle grinder.  //CHAINSAW//
It fits great & actually cycles all 17 roounds of ammo!

I was comparing the LC9 & G2. They are almost the same exact size but the Taurus just seems so much bigger.
