I'm interested is buying an AR. Some of you guys know much more about them than I do, so I'd like some feedback.
Who makes good out of the box rifles? Who should be avoided?
I'm capable of building one if I knew what all to get... would I better off (in terms of cost and/or quality) building vs buying?
Thanks!

Everybody interested in AR's better start buying 30 round magazines and bullets first.

You're right...eventually congress is going to implement some gun control, and high-capacity weapons will be at the top of the list.
-
All I can say is buy buy buy. Went to the gun show today down in Forest Park. Everybody was buying and prices are rising.

Any recommendations? I priced a Palmetto setup for ~650. Looks like Spikes for 800ish. DPMS is mid $500, but the reviews are so-so
-
All I buy is Spikes stuff. Very good quality and everything goes together well. I stay away from Bushmaster, Anderson, PSA. It all depends on what you want to spend and what your using it for. Look at Aero Precision. They make a lot of stuff for other companies
-
Have to agree with this article. http://www.gormogons.com/index.php/2013/06/gun-review-bushmaster-xm-15/ (http://www.gormogons.com/index.php/2013/06/gun-review-bushmaster-xm-15/)
I own a Bushmaster ORC with an EoTech holographic sight. Great quality, deadly accurate.
I'm by no means an AR expert, but do know for what you'll use the rifle/carbine for 99% of the time, don't get caught up in the fanboy aspect of it. Buy a good quality product and enjoy it. Build vs. Buy. Personally, if it was my only AR, I'd buy. Guns are like money in the bank. If you ever need quick money, you can always sell one. It will be more difficult to sell one that you built over one that was purchased whole.
I bought mine from a friend that was selling it. He bought it, owned it 5 years and only put 200 rounds through it. With that said, if I would have bought it new, I would have certainly looked at Spikes Tactical.
-
I'm looking to build one of these, not sure where to start or how much i will spend. looking to keep the cost under 800 if possible.
anyone know a good site to look that will help me put one together.

@cru9
What lower is that? Interested in what parts made the upper as well.
Where do you shop for most of your parts?
Sorry for all the questions
-
This build is a little different because of the size
Spikes lower
Spikes upper
Spikes enhanced parts kit(Trigger assembly)
Magpul stock
Spikes buffer tube and buffer T2
Spikes Bolt Carry Group
Aero Precision Rail
Green Mountain barrel
Noveske Pig
Magpul Grip
Spikes charging handle
Low profile gas block
I get my stuff from to places. One in Woodstock and one in Marietta.
-
This is another I just built. Full size with 16" barrel.

Very nice
-
My advise if your going to build one is find the look you want then we can pick the parts that match.
-
Look for me would be simple. I do want the longer barrel. I like your stock. And I would like something the has good sights with the ability to add a nice scope later
-
Bobby do you sell any of those?
-
Bobby do you sell any of those?
Not really but can help you get all the parts and build it for you or have it built like I did the one Ben got.
-
Ok....an employee of mine was thinking
about buying one. I will let him know.
-
So, If I was going to build one, .. what parts would i look for, and what brands for those parts would i try and put together and whats a fair cost for those parts..?
at this point im NOT looking for a scope, but one thing was i wonder if they make a barrel longer than 16.. and what would be the cost of a barrel over 16 ?

First off you need to decide what kind of look you want.
Why do you want something loner than 16" barrel?

No reason, just wondered if a longer barrel would make it better for hunting. but its not a must.
on Look. I kind of like the general look of them. i like the stock look

ok, found a pic of one that i like. also. not sure on the Cal.. i have see some that are.223 and some that are a diff. call. do they make one that takes the nato round.. or a larger cal. ? want to make sure if i use this say for.. deer hunting it will drop a deer?
-
You want one that will shoot 5.56 and .223.
Are you sure you want one with a carry handle verse a flat top?
-

I would do flat top with flip up sites and a scope
-
that sounds good, i did not know i could get flip up sights. sounds cleaner. i will look at a scope later.. need to do some more
research on that part.. also, anyway to get it in a larger caliber ? wondering if the .223 will bring down a deer?
-
Yes.223 will drop a deer. You can get an AR in .308. Ammo cost a lot more
-
ok, im ok. what about using 5.56 alot of them say .223 / 5.56 nato. what do u guys use and why? im guessing both are very close. just not sure whats best to use..
sorry for the off topic.. i will worry about ammo once i get the gun. lol
-
I mainly buy .223 but have both and will shoot both
-
Get something that has a chrome lined barrel
-
how much more is a chrome lined barrel.. and.. why do i want one?
-
Not much. Last longer and better shooting

Spoke to my brother about ARs (He has a really nice M4) and is more knowledgeable than me. He mentioned the need for some specialty tools required for building. Are these tools required if say I purchased a complete lower and complete upper?
What I've determined I'd like so far:
16" barrel, 1:7
5.56/.223 (compared to .223 only, if I understand correctly)
Flat top
Provisions for scope/sight on top in addition to flip up sights
mount for laser with remote button (wife's request, I'm assuming below barrel is ideal?)
All black
~$800
Suggestions on specific parts or entire rifles that meet the parameters, or comments on what I'm after are appreciated //SLAMIN//

About $800
7.5" barrel
Then you need a revocable family trust and $200 tax stamp and 5 month waiting period

Thats at the top of my price range. very nice now to figure out how / what parts i need to buy and how to put it all together.
My budget is 600-700 so im not sure where i can skimp to save . I know the upper seems to be one of the larger costs , and the Lower can run around 150 with the bolt carry group pushing 150. most of the other parts are under 100 .
not sure if this is a good parts list...
Lower Reciver - 110-150 ?
Lower Parts Kit - 60
Trigger. - 70
Bolt carry group - 110-150
Upper - 300-500
grip - . 25
Furniture - 100
Rear sight flip - 90
... saw an Optic for 200 (future)
the other issue is putting the dam thing together. watched a few videos and it can be frustrating. wonder what a gun shop would charge to put one together?

Don't be in a rush to buy or build. Prices are all over the board and you can find nice stuff at great prices.
I have a guy in Woodstock that will build it for free if you buy the parts. That's how Ben got his.
-
You can build a AR for as Cheap as $500. It just won't look like an AR that was built at $1000 but it still shoots the bullet. Just different furniture and different sights
-

Tell me your max price for just rifle. No sights. Just the main gun and do you want the longest rail possible or do you want a shorter rail with more barrel sticking out
-
600. and I would like the barrel sticking out , that does not bother me.. maybe some rail, but not as long as what you have, maybe 1/2?.
so the only thing i would need is sights? and eventually if i wanted to add some kind of scope but not for now.. also, would this come with a few clips for the ammo? if so
how many round and whats the cost of extra clips?

No Magazines come with them. You can buy all sizes. Most common is a 30 round Magazine. If you buy Magpul brand you can find them from $10-$15
You can buy cheaper ones but they don't feed as well
-
Thanks Bobby.

If you know what this is you can own an AR

Looks like a fireing Pin? am I right.
on a side note, will this be able to fire both .223 and 5.56 nato rounds?
-
Depends on if you buy a barrel that will shoot both

What's this

Hmm.. trigger pin. i dont know alot of them kind of look the same. and please dont show me any springs, im sure this thing is loaded with them of all shapes and sizes. lol
I would like one that can take either 223 or 5.56 nato rounds.
-
First picture was a firing Pin
Second picture is a buffer. It's inside the tube with a spring which controls the recoil
-
would have never known that on the buffer. so many parts.. yikes.

Those big black guns are too scarey

Just not as Tacticalcool
-
So maybe I should do this deal I could add a scope and still be in budget? What do u thing. How is the quality?
I dont want to get this if the quality is sub par. is my only concern. would love to get with your guy on building one ,so i get good/quality parts , like upgraded barrel, or other items. does your guy work at the cherokee gun place or is he independent?

You can spend more on the scope than the gun. I haven't looked in years. Have they come down any?
-
Like the scope on the 338 we shoot 1000 yards.
-
Kent, the best way to explain the 5.56mm/.223 is to think .357mag and .38 spl. The chamber pressure for the 5.56 is between 55,000 and 60,000 psi where the .223 is around 45,000 psi. You can fire the .223 and 5.56 out of the 5.56 chamber while it would be unsafe to shoot the 5.56 out of the .223 chamber.
I am a certified armorer on the M16/AR15 rifles as well as a licensed manufacture. I haven't been building many since I came back from asscrapistan 2 years ago but if you are local to the Woodstock/Canton area I would love to sit down with you and teach you how to put them together. Two to three hours and you can know most of the basics of the rifle, including how to handle most field repairs if something were to happen.
The lowers can be assembled with basic tools, most of which you probably have in your Jeeps tool kit. It's the uppers that really require the special tools.

Thanks. I'm in snellville and am still wondering if i should take the 499 deal as a starter, maybe tweek it some with a scope or better flip sights... for now. until i understand and learn more. i dont have the skill to assemble one, but i dont mind paying someone to do that for me.. i also dont have the skill to know/buy all the parts needed! i have a look i want, but my concern is quality and not wanting to toss 499 into the can.
For me, its less about the look and more about sound quality , something that will last, wont let me down when needed and has the power to do what i want.
example. buy the 499 , but upgrade the barrel to something of better, upgrade the sights to better flip sights or add a scope for a few hundered bucks.. the other thing is i dont know what other parts on the 499 would be a smart upgrade .. not so much for looks but for quality... a fear i have is taking something like the list bobby gave on parts.. and once its all together take it to someone and get told, the parts wont work together or im missing stuff.
sorry for the ramble.. I am still looking at the 499 because its thru Cherokee Gun and Pawn, Canton where i got my two 38's and Bobby trusts them, and that goes a long way .. in my book.. they seem to be a quality honest outfit. so i would hope they would not offer a deal thats sub-par...
any advice/you can offer is greatly helpful. and now that I know you have a super power. . ;) about guns. I shall be bugging the piss out of you about these matters. thanks again. and I may take u up on that offer. alwasy looking to learn...
-
To add to my above post. found this site on the internet. very interesting read, seems to spell it out, just would prefer someone with more knowledge to work with me in getting it all together.. .
http://thearmsguide.com/2905/how-to-build-an-ar-15-beginners-guide-part-one/ (http://thearmsguide.com/2905/how-to-build-an-ar-15-beginners-guide-part-one/)
-
Kent the one I posted above has a fixed front site so you would only need a rear sight. If your not happy with the looks or are already thinking upgrade don't buy it build one. You need to tell me what you would want to up grade on it. Buying sights and scopes aren't upgrades. Upgrades would be different rail like a quard rail, Changing stock , better trigger. Most people that buy a rifle off a shelf and upgrade it spend more money when you compare apples to apples at the end.
-
Cherokee is selling that rifle as a price point sale. It is basic entry level AR. Like I said last night it's all about the bells and whistles you want
-
Well, i would like a better quality barrel.. that will fire both .223 and 5.56, i would like a stock that has a few settings.. something tight, and then maybe a way to pull it out with some adjustability. I dont know triggers or what an upgrade would be, I would like to have the guard rail maybe a bit longer than whats on that . I am also thinking about 18 inch vs 16. as i like the longer barrel . . i want to stick with 1/7 twist. i did research what that ment.. .. not sure how important the lowers are from whats on the specal vs picking something with better quality.
as far as looks. main things im looking for. adjustable stock, larger rail but not totally covering the barrel, 18 inch barrel that fires .223 and 5.56 thats good quality.
did that help?
-
99.9% of AR stocks are adjustable. If the barrel is marked 5.56 it will shoot both calibers. Only barrels marked .223 are .223 only. Still no need for 18" barrel. Upgraded trigger just gives a smooth and lighter pull. If your not an avid shooter you probably won't notice the difference. And on a semi auto you have to be very careful with to light of a trigger. You can send double taps down range when you don't want to. Can be very dangerous
Here is a video. Don't get fixed on the prices because AR builds have thousands of varieties and cost can stay mild to wild
-

I doubt 300. but 200-250 possible as i love to shoot long distance targets.
I wont make it to xmas party ride with the daughter getting married in may, funds and time are kind of taken from me (via wife) to focus on my daughter ..

ok, did not know that. good to know. at my age if its at 300+ yards, ill just use my granddads 30aught6 with his scope. :)

I'll shoot my 16" rifles at 300 yards quite often.

My friend has his FFL and can get the ATI Omni Hybrid for $650. This is optic ready, so it looks just like the photo less the scope, forward grip & strap. It comes with one mag, 1:7 twist & is chambered at 5.56/.223 and quad rail. Let me know if your interested as I'm thinking of having him order me one.

Bobby's correct in saying that one can go a bit crazy on building an AR. Most of the custom guns I've done have been 900 dollars and up but were all built using high end parts.
I've been good friends with David and Rich over at Cherokee Gun and Pawn for a long time. Good folks and they always have great prices. I never really competed with them on rifles since they sold volume and I focused on the higher end custom rifles.
The market is very over saturated right now and if you do a bit of work you can find some good parts to build a rifle at a reasonable price.
Here are a few of the rifles I've built over the years.
-
I tend to build AR's with brand name parts if I ever needed or wanted to sell I could sell fast for more money than I had in it. When the AR craze started every manufacturer started making AR parts. Just like off road companies.
-
AJ, i really like that one your thinking about ordering. except for the handle thats at the end.. different color. I would like without that handle part down by the end of the barrel. besides that, looks nice..
-
Look for Key marked Forge upper and lowers or milled upper and lowers. Milled are usually more cost and usually nice fit. Forged have markings like Key hole , square or triangle markings on them. Real small. Also you want to build a milspec rifle not a commercial spec rifle.

There is a lot to learn if you want a nice rifle that shoots well and dependable

So don, your saying the 499. gun at cherokee would be good, safe, quality. .. shoot it for say 6m or so, and learn more about the AR and what i like/dont like. then look more serious about building a new one?

I just had an AR 15 built for me custom to what I wanted. Personally I would do some research, look at whats out there and then build something based on what you want. There are alot of cheap AR deals out there but the old saying, you get what you pay for applies here. Just like jeep parts, it works the same for guns. You buy a cheap gun you will need to replace things eventually. I built an all aero precision AR15 .223/ .556 with the colors I wanted, handguard length, style and all for a good price. Now I am saving for the optics. I have magpul flip ups and am deadly at 100yds with it. Maybe I will get a bonus at xmas and be able to buy a good red dot optic.

Ben, post a pic. :) please

ATI may have made some changes over the past year but I would stay away from polymer receivers. The benefit isn't there with all the other options out there.

Thanks! I'm going to hold and continue shopping/researching.

This thread is full of good recs but that's my recommendation. You can absolutely get more passionate about the rifles and spend as much as you want either building or buying but I would absolutely recommend buying a good deal rifle you like the looks of, shooting as much as you want, and then deciding - do you want to change up/add on to what you have or buy a new $2k factory rifle or build a $1-2k rifle with all the best pieces. There are so many options for the rifles you ca find what you like over time while shooting what you have. Given the upcoming election climate in betting at worst you can buy now and sell for 5-10% min. more later.
That's why my wife calls them "Barbies for Men".

-
Aero precision upper and lower
Blue mountain 16" fluted barrel
15" aero precision handguard
Magpul buttstock
Magpul grip
Magpul flip up sights
Shoots smooth, no recoil and 100yds with open sights I am grouping around 6". Optics come next and the grouping should tighten up over time. But I am happy with that!

Thanks. I put together a build, i think i have all the parts needed. but not sure... and aprox. cost. 943 which is over my budget of 600(i can go 650 if needed).
So not sure where i can skip or shave some costs... I listed the parts i think are needed to pass along to someone that could assemble.
if im missing any please let me know, if you see a place where i can shave some costs without hurting quality to much please make a suggestion.
The area's i DONT want to change are. the Rail/grip/stock/upper & lower if possible.
I included the link to the site where i got this, their prices may be way off. but it was an easy sight to operate and get around.

Parts and pricing are off. You want me to price out your stuff?
Why are you choosing a Nickle Boron BCG?
-
All of these big black guns are so scawey.

Yes please price. .. on the nickle. Boron, .. not sure, seemed like something i needed? I will trust your judgement.

I sent my contact the info. Nickle boron is just an added cost. If you keep your gun clean no reason to spend the extra money. I don't run them on any of mine. They usually run $50 to $100 more than a regular BCG
-
Bobby has a good guy he uses. Same guy built my AR for a good price. I say do it right the first time and build what you want to build. You can always re sale a built gun easier than a stocker and make some money.
-
yup, thats what im trying to do, just hope my budget does not screw it up too much. :)
-
I had a budget and went over it but not as much as I thought. It was worth it. I got a gun that I wanted in all aspects.
-

Can you wait a couple of months to save up the money to do it like you want, or is it a need now thing (Obama is coming for them...lol), or are you just set that it can't cost more than $650?
- Torg
-
With my wife and daughter sucking all the $ out of me for this dam wedding, i was able to (clark)away some cash. and thats it. if i wait a few months, pretty sure i wont have any more but i could have less.. plus obama is a concern.. and besides pistols i wanted something ... mmm a bit more for home defense..
-
I would not even worry about obama. There is no way he could ban them. I used to think that and thus why I was wanting to get one before this could happen but it will not. Keep saving! Hide your money //;D//

Looking at a carbine barrel, and can't decide on a foregrip length. Going free float... any opinions?
I like the look of this one, and reviews seem pretty positive

Just saw this add. cherokee gun and pawn (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj315/kent10s/ar15x.jpg)
-
Not bad at all. It's better than the last one that Cherokee had on sale
-
So maybe I should just see if they have any more of these left and find me some manual flip sights. ?
-
Can't beat the price
-
So I will be headed to Cherokee Gun and Pawn to pick up that AR-15 Today (around 12 noon) . I'm sure i could spend more and build a better AR but after all the comments, and well.... im really just starting out with the AR-15.
This(hopefully) will be a great quality starter AR for me. not to many frills.
Allow me to do some mods(hopefully), buying it from a sound dealer who has a great reputation and the gun is not to shabby? its quality? I hope..... just not at the scale of what some of you guys have.
but..
It will server the purpose, I will just keep it clean (do with all my guns), shoot it often and add a few things down the road. need some manual flip sights and then a scope, maybe a few other extras. but it will be something i can enjoy for several years until i learn it better.
Kind of like my Jeep. drive it stock. pretty dam good ride stock.. then add some things as i learn more .
I think just like a jeep , a gun's most important part is the person behind the trigger.
Thanks guys for all the advice and help, I will be using Bobbys guy in the future im sure. and John, i still want to hook up and get some knowledge and let you give me some guidance with this thing. maybe we can do that nxt months once the holidays calm down.

Took a few days to make a decision, but I picked up an empty lower.
If any of you have built or upgraded and kept the take offs and you want to get rid of them, post up or shoot me a PM

What's the plan?

What's the plan?
Basic parts for now, nothing fancy. I've got the lower squared away, along with the stock, buffer, and bcg. Just need to find the upper stuff and assemble.

If it takes as long to build the AR as the buggy, the revolution will be over by the time you're done. lmao lmao
What is your budget? For as much as you'll actually use it, why not just pick one up? So many deals out there. You won't notice the difference shooting it.

I sold the jeep in March, but I'm pretty sure I've seen more trails this year than you
My budget is $32, and I'm just waiting on the right parts. Also, I'm not seeing many cheap rifles to "pick up." Most places I see are sold out or back ordered. My local shop (where I got the lower) had only 3 more lowers, and the cheapest complete gun was around 1800.
I could pick one up, but then I wouldn't get the joy of learning something new. Same reason I didn't buy a buggy or just drop off the parts at my buddy's shop

True on availability. budsguns.com The biggest headache will be buying ammo.
You won't learn anymore than you would by completely disassembling a new AR.

Finished the AR pistol. Its a fully semi-auto ghost gun that shoots all the calibers, 1-50. May upload a picture later
Flip up sights for now, but will probably add a red dot at some point.
WTB: red dot sight. Let me know if you got one
