Title: Aetna Replacement Ride
Post by: RotorHead on May 20, 2008, 08:28:55 AM
Well, it looks like Aetna is out. Now we need to see if everybody wants to ride somewhere else or cancel completely.

Here some of the options that come to mind.

Tellico
River Rock
Morris Mountain
Mountain Side ORV in Gadsden, AL
Beasley Knob

I haven't contacted any of these places yet. I wanted to get some input from you guys first. Chris says he's heard good thing about Mountain Side ORV.

Mountain Side seems like it would be a pretty decent place to go actually.

I love me some River Rock but not sure on paying $50 the same month as Tellico and I would like to get back to Beasley. Mike, I know you would probably like a rematch with Morris Mountain. I think we should take Tellico off the list since we are going at the end of June anyways.

My vote is for Beasley and Moutain Side (be aware you pay $10 per person).

I'm ready.  Always enjoy wheeling in a new place.  I wish Durhamtown was ready and had the right stuff: rocks.

I wasn't aware that Mountain Side has as much as they do:

I vote Mountain Side, but I'm OK with any. I just went to Beasley, so it's last on my list.

BEASLEY FOR SURE! I am with Jerm as all I make and can save is going to my Tellico fund for June. Limited funds with all things going up! Beasley is real close for me!

I might actually be able to make this one.  The timing is good, so hopefully I'll be able to get my drive line vibration issue fixed by then.

I really like Beasley Knob, but I've wanted to go to Morris Mountain for awhile.  I should be able to swing a day's fee, but a $50 fee on top of gas and everything is out of the question.  I'm not familiar with Mountainside ORV, but at $10 it sounds reasonable.

get that fixed! Morris Mountain is pretty cool and I wouldnt mind going there either. I just have not been to Beasley in a yr and never to Mountain Side so those are my first. As much as I loved River Rock I am with you on the $50 thing.

Probably just a day. Depending on where we go, some may decide to camp.

If you guys wanna ride at River Rock I can give Steve a call. Might be able to get a little something off, but it will still probably be one of the more expensive choices. Just a thought.  :)

So is there an article or what the hell happened to Aetna? I heard about all the residential stuff and tresspassing?private property and stuff. I also read a couple of newspaper articles that were posted a few days ago. But why the immediate action? Details please.

Right now, until I verify most of it, it is all second hand from some people who were there 2 weeks ago.  But I see no need in planning a ride there when I know good and well it WILL be gated within 10 days.

I probably won't have my front geared by then, but if anyone is coming around here I'll ride up with ya and be a spotter/photog for the weekend. Or, if anybody on my side of Atlanta doesn't mind me parking my junk in their driveway all weekend I can do that too.

Wow so I looked up Mountain Side place today. From what I remember it is about 130 miles from me here in Smyrna and over 2 hours because a lot of the trip is backroad highways, not the interstate. It showed me going up 75 then getting off past 575 and all backroads over. So anyone further east or south from the north 75/285 junction has got a long haul...

Easy way is I-20 WEST over to Anniston, and North to Gadsden.  It's an easy ride that way.

Post by: BigJerm on May 21, 2008, 08:46:40 AM
shows about the same for me going through Anniston. About 136 miles, 2 hours and 30 minutes from my side of town.

Yeah, I'm not doing an AL ride.  Too far to drive the jeep, too far away from home to break, too expensive to tow.

I voted Mountain Side, but Beasley will work for me too. If somebody is only able to go if it is one or the other, post up. It will all come down to which one will work for the most people.

I am good on both, I checked and they are about the same. Beasley is about 12 miles closer, lol. Now Morris Mountain is only 80 miles from me now, very nice! Anyways, either is cool with me!

They are both a long way for me. I voted Mountainside because I've been wanting to go there, but I'll have to wait til it's closer to see if I will have the funds.

Either is good for me.  I'll go with the group, and have not voted.

Yep.  There's one place I've neer seen, just heard about, that is supposed to be pretty major.  Other than that, nice challenging but do-able ride for a mild Jeep.

There's only one trail you won't be able to make. It's 9B. I haven't even made it up that one without turning around. The rest are pretty tame.

On 93C there was a basketball sized oak laying across the trail. Don't know if it has been removed or not so bring an axe if you go to Beasley. ;D

Beasley was the first off road trip for me that was not in south Louisiana mud.  There were actually a couple of almost stock jeeps with us.

I've been wheeling in this area for over 5 yrs..... have yet to make it to Beasley Knob.  Now I read Beasley Knob has made one of the Top Trails of '08!!  I really want to go!! :)
Oh!!  BTW, I'm new here....I'm also a member of TNVJC.  I live in TN, but work in GA.  Best of both worlds!!  I hope to join ya'll on several trail rides.  But like most,  gas prices are really slowing my adventures to a crawl. (not a good crawl)
