Title: GATR Fest Carnage Report
Post by: mdo817 on September 20, 2010, 10:49:37 AM
I will start it, I haven't checked everything yet.

Fuel pump died Friday after lunch, thanks to the southside crew that came through to help get me pieced back together and ready to run Sat.

Broke inner and outer short side axle shafts.
Thinking the same hub might be trashed.

Will post pictures later.

What was you doing/climbing when the short sides broke? Are they aftermarket axles?

Yea, they are 10 factory, I think I actually may have started spitting caps on the last run Sat. evening, I wasn't doing anything when the actual carnage happened. I was dropping into the rat hole, and the very first thing you have to do is cross a log, the XJ saw the wood and spit the u-joint out. ;D

I don't know what the trail was but it had 3 lines, middle being the hardest. I took the middle from the bottom to the top where the big tractor tires were stacked side by side. No winching either. I know what my next mod will be. Can you guess?

Sounds like plenty of carnage. Here's mine in order of events:

Started with the busted windshield and brake line the day before the trip.

(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x164/SeminoleMike/Jeep%20Pictures/Brake%20Failure/DSCF0273.jpg)

Blown tire bead
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x164/SeminoleMike/Jeep%20Pictures/River%20Rock%20GATR%20Fest%202010/DSCF0372.jpg)

Got bit by a dog

Busted rear axle shaft
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x164/SeminoleMike/Jeep%20Pictures/River%20Rock%20GATR%20Fest%202010/DSCF0397.jpg)

Busted passenger front door surround
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x164/SeminoleMike/Jeep%20Pictures/River%20Rock%20GATR%20Fest%202010/DSCF0448.jpg)

Rear locker not locking. Started in Savannah. Noise also coming from rear end on decelerate. Probably f'd something up when the axle broke. Could be the bent rear shaft I used as a replacement on the sound though. Doesn't matter too much. D60 is on order.

Got a nail in one of my rear tires on the Dually

LMAO MIKE!  You certainty had some bad luck with that dog, and them made up like true lovers, lol.

That is the nastiest broken axle I had ever seen with all the shavings.  Yuck.

And did y'all put the plunger in before the carrier or after?  Common problem.  Hopefully that's all it is.

I havent really seen anything so far, but I didnt do much to get damage this round. I plan to do an inspection this week. I did loose a pin for my disconnect  :D. Thanks to Chad (US TROOPER) for hooking me up with a fix for the ride home.

I know him and Zac have some carnage to share.

I need to check under my jeep also, I only bent up my passenger side front brake line, tire grabbed it, a little rock rash on plastic rear fender. I came out pretty good it looks like after hearing about everyone else’s damage. Had a great time !!! {toast}

 I ended up tearing the valve stem out of my rear passenger tire, and tearing up a center cap, and loosing a spring. $2 and 1 hour later I was back on the trail. Thanks to everyone that helped me out on that one. I don't think that I tore anything else up though.....

I'll take credit for Livingston's broken axle, I was under the driving at the time it went bang. I guess I should have put that in my list Mike.

Chad bent a tie rod and busted a u-joint and put a nice egg shaped hole in the stub shaft ears. You gave him the spare tie rod and Eddie and I replaced it on the trail. I think he still has the bent one as a souvenir. Hopefully he made it back to Alabama OK.

1. Bent Frame
2. Bent lower link bar
3. A cut hydro line
4. Plenty of rock rash.

Ok here is what i got so far after a lil looking around. Well first was the bent tie rod Adam was was nice enough to get a picture of me bending it the guys had that replaced quik and we were heading back to fix the rest soon after  ;D.... finding that lead to finding the dog ears on the stub shaft and u joint wasted. Thanks for the parts and Alex for the knowledge and assistance..... The boot on my front drive shaft was tore up... came off all the way home and scared the hell out of me with all the racket it made as it spun around the driveshaft, before it finally came off all the way! I put a really nice dent in the passenger side tube of my rock sliders, they saved my tub, rock rash on top of the drivers side tube...not sure how i did that maybe the last night?? :-[ Loads of rock rash on the nth degree trans skid. Oh yea steering stabilizer is bent all up new one on order. I put a nasty dent in my oil pan almost took out the bolt too. Time for another skid plate i figure. Thanks again for everyone helping and giving up parts to get me home yall are a great bunch of folks and im glad to meet all of you.

Had a great time!!

Oh i have a set of surrounds if they will work on your 4 door mine were off a 2000 TJ.

don't have any cool pictures to post, but i didn't really break that much  ::) :o.  not even sure were to begin on a list for my jeep.  had some fun in the rat hole and smoked the clutch, bent a rim, and spit some caps on a u-joint and egged the shaft.  then the awesome pit crew came in and lent a hand to replace the clutch on saturday and got me up and rolling again.  went out friday night, was doing great untill i lost a front air line for the ARB, it would have been ok but the part that took out the air line was both upper control arms.  limped back to the trailer and called it a night, woke up the next day finished up with loading everything up drove home dumped everything off then back in the truck and drove down here to tyndall where i'll be for the next 6 weeks.  might get to add more to the list when i get home and clean off all the mud.  had a blast, only thing i will change next time is stay out of the rat trap on friday night (have to save that for saturday night).

again another big thanks for everyone that helped out with changeing a clutch.  don't think i would have been able to get it rolling again that evening with out everyones help, and a thanks to ryan for picking it up for me.

I will start by saying there was alot of repairs done this weekend. Really impressed at what what got done. I will post pics after I clean everything up.

1. Tie rod is really move up out of harms way now.
2. The gas tank is the same as the tie rod.
3. Alternator went out (repaired)
4. Rear drive shaft spit caps on butt crack (trail repair around mid night) Thanks Billy for the tug out of the crack.
5. MAJOR rocker/door damage on butt crack
6. Lower ball joint
7. Rear bumper damage
8. Exhaust hanger (repaired)

I done most of the damage on carnage on carnage hill sat night. They said I spent an hour on it didnt seem like it, was a lot of fun at 2am  Made it to the top ledge and couldnt get the rear to pull me up. So I had to back off. {boohoo}

Well all of my damage was done night riding...
Friday night I took out my passengerside mirror, and flattened my leaf springs out running up powerline hill... I made it most of the way up but had to be tugged the last 50 feet.

Then saturday night I: dented rear driveshaft, dented rear diff cover, bent up my transmission crossmember, finished clearancing my gas tank down to about 12 gallons, dented driverside frame rail, and crack a weld on the frame brace I paid an "offroad shop" to weld ::).

Also, Alex broke his third shaft trying to tug me backwards off a ledge. {peek}

My only carnage was a nice little dent/scuff on the passenger side a-pillar from going up powerline hill.

good weekend for me!! (It will probably blow up the next time I wheel...haha)

I can't complain, made it up the left side of "Butt Crack Hill"

1. Crinkled my exhaust
2. Dented my passenger side rear tube fender
3. busted a bolt on the rear bumper and stripped a few others (now rear bumper wiggles)
4. Bent the upper passenger side door hinge (Door does not shut)
5. Lots of bumps and bruises on the skid plates

Maybe more once I get a chance to clean it up and do some more looking ;D

Near carnage, the far left up the big hill with the larger rocks.  Where I bent my slider, and we almost rolled Chucks red TJ. I think it hung you up a bit too, and you backed down to help someone else once.

This was an expensive weekend!

Call Allsouth and 4 Wheel Parts for replacement parts!

He was way up on 7 by the gas line. Where Ryan got stuck last year when he had to use a jumper wire to run the fuel pump.

I was dropping back in to join the group again. Rubbed the passenger top/bottom rails on the tree on the way up... got the drivers side body on the way back down trying to pivot on the tree.

I think I'll be taking the passenger glass out to even it up  ;D

I forgot

I broke a rock light less than 48 hours after installing it  {no}

and bent and scrapped shiny the body mounts on both sides.

I used a can of flat black under and a can of satin around the fenders and bumpers last night.  Wife says the garage smells like a paint factory.

Yeah man it landed hard on the big rock at the top of carnage. Just going to plate it on three sides and I think it will be fine.

Damn I hate that I had to miss this one. Budget just wasn't there. I'm looking towards the next ones to getting back onto to the trails.

TJ, you talking about the same climb that claimed (owned) your passenger fender?

Yep, about 10 feet further up. haha  Once I see a dent I usually fixate on it but this one I'm able to ignore for some reason. {hihi}

Which reminds me. I need to get on painting that before it starts to rust.

Here is my only carnage.  Don't know that I'd really call it carnage though, these stock Jeep steps are just waiting to snap off.  I'm surprised mine lasted almost five years.  Time for some sliders now. ;D

Also a pic of Jimmy fixing his pinion yoke and Mike (gusagus) replacing a front axle U-Joint.
