Title: Gulches GATRFest Carnage Report
Post by: Uncle Randy on October 16, 2012, 06:17:54 AM
I have not seen a carnage report thread. I think maybe it's in several threads. But I will start.
At the end of the night ride with Skip, after taking my TJ out of 4-wheel to make a turn, it would not go back in 4-wheel nor did I have 2-wheel drive. Wes was in front of me and jumped out to take a look. He discovered the 4 wheel shifter linkage pin (?) underneath had dislodged and a plate on the inside had come off. He took the remaining plate off the out side, moved the pin up and replaced the plate with the pin in the plate hole. Then he was able to get the shifter to work in 4 high. That enabled me to get back to my trailer; and home.
Unfortunately there is also a pretty heavy leak of something that needs to be figured out. Oh well-If I wheel it, it usually breaks. Seems like I have only wheeled once or twice without breaking. It is a 97, so some of it is probably due to wear.
Huge thanks to Wes for getting me on the road. The help that people give others in this club is amazing to me. I'm still learning, but not anywhere near being a mechanic.-Randy

Got to the park at 10:30am Friday.
Set up camp site and tent.
Rode for less than 1 hour then.....
On trail 9 I was on the left hand side on the rock ledge
when my spotter said turn driver....I turn to driver and he
said turn driver and I said it is all the way. We then notice
I had broke my outer steering tie rod in half. Winched the
rest of the way up. Went back to camp and Wes found us the
number to the parts store.....ordered part was to be in at 5pm.
Went to parts store....wrong part came in. Could be there in the
morning. They called and found one in Greenville so off we went.
Anyway got back after dark. Walked back to Jeep and got it fixed.....

Broken right rear shock. Backed it into a rock somewhere and bent the shaft. AJ and I threw a winch line on it to get it straight and she cycled. Then she lost all the fluid and still held up all weekend. Not too shabby considering 10 minutes in on TNT I was humping a boulder and sitting on my front driveshaft, oil pan, control arms and transmission at the same time  ::) thanks for those who helped me off and whoever got the hi lift I left, good luck with that one.

Something similar happened to me at Morris Mtn on the gauntlet. I took the jeep out of 4wd and couldnt shift it back in a few seconds later. Quick look underneath and I found the culprit. I had actually took a good hit to the belly pan and it pushed the drive train up about an inch or more, putting the linkage in a bind. I had to shift the transfer case from underneath the jeep.  Go ahead and get yourself a AA or Novak cable shifter and dont look back. You may want to check out that belly pan a little closer too, that is probably what created your linkage problem.

Looks like its time for that oil pan skid plate...

Yeah, the list is long.

When I flopped it, it smashed the whole left side (driver's side). Snapped the mirror right off, CO2 tank went thru the back window. Ripped the flares off that side. Dented both driver's side doors and the fender.  Driver's door is bowed at top, letting in air & rain. The front bumper seems to be hanging crooked now, too. Oh, and my sunglasses holder fell out too.

Bent my rear locating arm into a semi -circle (supposed to be straight). Big thanks to Dean at Gulches for helping me get the arm off the truck & bent straight again. Right after the control arm got bent I broke my first passenger front axle shaft.

Saturday AM Mike & Todd helped me (well, I helped them) replace the front shaft. Broke that one before noon on that first big rock at TNT rock garden.

Might not make the ride next month.

Carnage... not compared to others.. I was running I think rocker knocker backwards and dropped down on a rock using my right rear tail lamp as a break... well it broke alright. There only other thing I see is a bent rear lower CA bracket. Nothing serious I'll bend it back with a BFH. I did have a weld crack for one of my rear shock relocation brackets, but that is the fault of the welder operator! Nasty weld to begin with and I was wondering then it was going to crack. Other than minor scars.. It was a successful ride.

Outboard the rear. Savvy off-road has a fox shock with reserve for the outboard. There is someone one on JF who can tune really good. Forgot his name but I hear when he is done with them that it's pretty awesome. Just say u r a JF member and get 10% and discounted shipping from savvy.

Sticking with Rock krawler and doing something like there 2.0 RRD Remote Reservoir Shocks. Fox are nice, but way too pricey for me. Gonna have to save either way  :hlp

RRD's are no cheap date.  There regular 2.0's or 2.5's are much more expensive than Fox if I remember correctly.  Not sure on the resi ones.

I have the RK RRD 2.0's and I have to say, the warranty that RK offers is outstanding. I had 2 leaking shocks. I sent them all 4 and they rebuilt them all at no charge. They even changed the end caps with the new updated design. The only gig was I paid for shipping, no big deal. I think the shocks leaked because I didn't have it bump stopped and was basically using the shock for a b/stop.

I will say my jeep rides harsh, not sure if it's the springs or shocks or just the fact that it is a light 2dr when compared to the heavier 4dr. with longer wheel base.  ???

I pulled off my tranny skid MOnday to get a closer look at the 4wd shifter linkage and try to find leak problem. I either tore up my tranny mount or it was already broken. (#*&*#*#-dumbass). So is the Daystar Poly Mount a good mount replacement? I saw on net that OEM is not too good.

thanks for the advice. -Randy

Hey Randy,

The stock mount is fine...you want a little give down there and the poly mount (IMHO) is too stiff for the drive train if you still have the rubber engine mounts.  You either do the entire drive line poly (i had this on my previous wrangler and i hated it... transferred too much vibration to the frame and in turn into the body for my taste) or leave it with the stock rubber.  Have you ever replaced the mount?  I noticed mine was busted (ripped in half) and replaced it with the stock one and it performs fine.

Replace with rubber. Cheap, easy to replace, you will get plenty of miles from it, and it will be more comfortable.

A shame, the belly up mod in the TJ/LJ is one of the best. Makes a huge difference on the rocks.

I just can't do a belly up right now. $$$ First I have to fix the 4wd shifter linkage, and the leak. Not sure exactly where the leak is yet. If I have any change from the 100 after the necessary repairs, I will get a belly up. LOL. I picked up the new tranny mount today. $35.

Randy you can always go cheap like I did and do the no lift belly skid from UCF. It gave me another 1.25" of clearance, don't need an SYE, new shaft or MML. I already had a body lift and motor mount lift though. 1 day I will go back do it all right and get a flat skid. But for now I gain another inch of clearance, I have a flat surface skid that slides easier and wont bend up like the stock 1 did

Slowly getting some replacement parts for the Runner. All of these are from salvage places. Fender $125 (flare wrong color), Driver's door $100 (some a- hole CUT the wiring for the window controls instead of just unplugging it, so now I get to solder 18 wires or so, or swap harnesses from my old door (door is silver, gotta get it painted), 2 rear locating arms, 1 as a spare. $30 each. Rear quarter glass $75, gotta put it in. No luck finding a black rear door close by yet. But, at least it opens properly and doesn't leak.

And, I decided to get new front axles from NAPA, as I've read good things about them. $100 each. They should be here Tuesday.

Sounds like you are getting it squared away quickly. You should keep the damaged doors and cut them into half doors or something for fun

While under my jeep today surveying all the suspension components, i noticed this...new joint on the way.  Looks like the metal on the compression ring either was mis-threaded (doubt it...would not have been able to tighten them down that much) or the threads had something in them when or just flat out failed.  These are the rough country joints and have held up well to bashing and have a lifetime warranty which they honored without question as soon as i called them.

That's what makes me stay with them.  I called currie today and asked about heir warranty and basically got laughed at.  I love getting laughed at with 400$ in potential sales.
