Well you guys saw my JK "mangotango" last weekend, I'd like to ride out to Gulches and learn more with some experienced drivers, should I expect to be able to do alot on their "red" level trails without risk of serious damage- open/open diff. I'll add disconnects before I go. I was pretty tweaked out at the top of Bell mountain but now I can't stop thinking about it so I guess I'm hooked now.

Yes you can still have a lot of gun at Gulches. It's an awesome park

Theres a lot of trails you can ride at Gulches. We had a lot of fun there last year. I would do the go around and watch the other people. You don't have to run with the big dogs!

Gulches is a small but very fun park and has trails and rocks for all levels of drivers and rigs. If you get your disconnects on you will find A LOT of stuff to do at Gulches and the areas you choose not to do will almost always have bypasses and/or a place where you can watch others. It is an easy park to get around and really have fun.

One of the best "all around" parks for everybody to enjoy! You will not be sliding all over the place like you did @ Bell Mtn. Gulches is mostly rock and obstacles. I really recommend going on this ride!! The Morris Mountain ride will be great too! Morris Mountain is a little more difficult when wet, but the more rides you go on the more experience you get {cheers2}

Love Gulches! Skip will take you on a tour as well. Make sure you try some of the things you might otherwise be weary of. Got to try to learn and progress in this sport!

I went to gulches last year, no lockers, only think i had was disconnects, and 33' tires. i went about 98% of the same places everyone (uber rigs) went. its a fun park, lots of trails. and stuff to do.. the nite ride was super fun.

I'd like to go also,but plan on having lockers in by then and maybe a engine mod or two also

I went to Gulches last year as well. I was open in the front with just an LSD in the rear and managed to keep up with most of the guys. There are bypasses to a lot of the really tough obstacles, all in all a great place. I definitely recommend the discos for this park though, last time I was there I didn't disconnect and as a result got a bit tippy on one of the descents, 2 wheels = no fun. I managed to do two black trails on the tour with Skip as well. Great fun </ROCKIN/>

With disconnects you will find out how much open/open sucks. Since you have the ability to flex, that tire that has the least amount of traction will receive most of the power since there is less resistance to turn the tire. In return the tire that has traction will see half the amount of power that one spinning tire receives. A locker of some sort will make a huge difference.

If you are going to run open/open you are better off disconnected. Flexed axles allow the wheels to move to the dirt or rocks better. But yes, when one tire loses resistance, the open dif will send more power to it, making it spin more when it actually has less traction.
A locked axle is the way to go.

You both are saying almost the same thing...
The disconnect allows the axle to move better across uneven terrain, or flex. By keeping all 4 tires on the ground you usually have better traction/stability. The downfall of that flex is there is less force applied to the axle, because of the disconnected the sway bar, so a tire can still be on the ground but with a lot less weight on it and just spinning with no traction. BUT to keep connected a limit flex you could end up doing a 3 wheel and now you have a free spin tire in the air, still without traction.... This is all in theory and now my head hurts </BEER/>

You dont even need that. Just a front locker will keep the whole traction issue under control. a rear locker is for sissys ;D

Yep and now that I have a truck and soon a trailer i am going the cheap route. Axle shafts and auto locker in the rear

Which Detroit, soft locker mechanical, elocker (do they make this), trutrac LSD?

I see Eaton e-lockers, but Eaton Detroit seems to be variations of mechanical diffs. All the same manufacturer right?

If a rig is never going to be driven on the street a spool is the strongest solution for the rear.

Yep locker all the way. No limit slip, no selectable, just a good ol auto locker style. My jeep wont see much street anymore. As of now it drives about 10 miles every 2 weeks or so. Made it all the way to buckhead the other weekend so it needs a good rest before i take it out again... lol
And ben... Its still at 30,XXX miles. Ill make it to 31k one day ;D

For all the nay sayers, just run a lunch box in the rear. I put 60+ miles a day on the old jeep and the spartan is always in the rear doing its job, just waiting for me to hop a curb {peek}. Very well mannered on the street, except for pulling the front tire off the ground occasionally, might have more to do with whats up front though. </LMAO/>
Of course you will hear more negative opinions from the folks w/o. Just giving some first hand experience. {popcorn}

Why not a front Rubicon locker? When it's not locked it's a little more street friendly verse a Detroit. The front is stronger than the rear due to rear having the LSD feature.

Just swapped out Spartan in the front for a Eaton E-locker
like I got in the rear. Have to admit it is nice flipping a switch
for both lockers now!!!

Why not a front Rubicon locker? When it's not locked it's a little more street friendly verse a Detroit. The front is stronger than the rear due to rear having the LSD feature.
I forgot that works. How much is stock rubicon locker? Not to mention I got to wire it up and all that stuff. An auto locker is fine for a rig that drives less than 5 miles a week on the road. I don't need a street friendly rig so price and install come into play here more than having selection

have had 2 different rear axles both with detroits. Never gave me one bit of trouble and probably put 40,000 miles or more on my old one. Manual takes a bit to get used to.

I run Detroit lockers in all my rear axles. They are the most reliable locker on the market. I ran a Eaton E-locker in the front of my last jeep. Loved it!! Flip the switch and your locked. Never had a problem running 40" tires. It did take a second once the tire started to spin then it would completely lock.
I like the lockrite or aussie up front and a Detroit rear personally for JK's

I stopped in Allsouth today and talked to Danny. I'll be getting Aussie lockers front and rear for the CJ and one piece alxles. Got a Mallory HEI distributor and Fuel injection coming for the 304 {cheers2}

I did the same today Bear, his suggestion for what I wanted to do was a powertrax front locker and get better axles for my JK first, then upgrade the rear with a Detroit (as Ben said above). My big decision is to re-gear all at once while the diffs are already taken apart to 5.13's and do the front and rear alltogether.

Hey man it was nice meeting you and the family last weekend. I'm going to do both at the same time. I'll already have the jeep down so I'll do them both. I'll go into withdrawls if it's down to long.... Probably will do the spring over at the same time. He had one on the shelf today for the front, almost walked out with it......lol I'll do the work myself so I'll wait till I have everything together then tear into it and knowing me won't stop till its back together

Ebay has them for sale along with the pumps sometimes. Also check rubicon owners forum. You need the compressor and locker along with a simple switch to make it functional. They are a low psi locker, I wanna say 3psi, maybe a little more.

Yeah running air and electric is way more involved than I want to be just for a rear locker.
Fellas when you get your rigs built Bell Mtn would be one of the last places I would go! Lots of ORV parks with some serious trails and hours of fun including the one this thread is about

The only reason I'm going back over there is because I didn't get up there last weekend. Took the first bypass got to the end of it and was stuck. Slid back down hill busted a tail light lens on a scrub oak tree turned around and was done. I tend to be a tad bit hard headed....according to my wife anyway.....
