Title: Beasley trip report
Post by: BigJerm on July 19, 2008, 07:34:27 PM
O what a good time. Just got home. Had some damage, 2 people has a flop, Jon and Knucklehead. We went down what I guess is Rattle Snake hill? Not sure but it was a hell of a time (thats where the flops were). Then we went down another trail that was a blast. Some of you original members probably remember our first ride there when Mat had the Durango. Remember the one hill we climbed out and then Jeff (name? 4 door black Rubicon on 35's with prego wife) tried to climb a ledge and couldnt we all turned around.... yeah we came down that trail and it would be awesome to go back up.

Big thanks to Ben for spot work for everyone and the winch work to get folks right side.

Dave, awesome directing to get the 2 flops back over.

Jon, I got your pulley block, we had it up at Ben's jeep while turning you over. I grabbed it so it wouldnt get left behind but forgot to give it to you.

Knucklehead, good to meet you, glad we got your Jeep back over!

As for me.... love the lockers, love the manual transmission, dont love the long, low belly. Got to get it up ASAP! Never got stuck but I rubbed a lot with the skids.

Pictures to follow!  nln

haha, aight, for me, my front driver tire went first over the ledge which brought my back passenger tire up. my front passenger tire went up the bank which caused it to flip onto the driver side. its was a SLLLOWWWWWWWWWW flop. %)

Good time indeed.  I'm 99% sure the hill isn't named, but the peak we were coming off of was Blue Knob or Blue Rock.

We skipped Rattlesnake.

How did the flops occur?

Well Jon explained his (i missed it). Knucklehead flipped where those pictures of him on 3 wheels is at. He back out, driver front was off the ground, cut the wheel the other way and his back passenger sunk down. I think he jeep slipped out of 4wd, he went backwards and rolled over on his side. Thank god it stopped...

Ok, home now. I made great time 1.40 hours to home, Then had to go out and pick up the little ones and do the bedtime route. SSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO what can I say but what a heck of a day! Had a blast and would like to go back to go up the flop hill. I like the sound of that. It was a good trail almost like schoolbus but not as long. Good ledges to try and good size rocks to mow down... Jerm ::) But nobody got hurt and we all drove out. I put the mile marker to the test today. Worked flawlessly for those who be hatin on the markers :D The one shot of the front of my jeep face on was right before I told Jerm to GET ON THE BUMPER! I could feel it starting to go over and I was puckering. :-* Chris, you should consider a trip out just for that trail. It will be awesome to go back up it. Like I said, little schoolbus trail. I will have to post pics monday as the cord I need is at work. >:( Jerm. love the rockin pick! Turned out awesome! Glad to meet the Davester and what a recovery team we make. Everyone helped!

cant wait for your pictures. Mine dont show a lot of the trail going down but you atleast took some of my Jeep coming down.

I have to add, there was a lot more exposed rock this time around so it wasnt just a plain dirt hill climb. The climb that mat over heated on isnt just dirt anymore, a little rock now.

  Hey Guys,
Got settled in after shower etc.  GREAT ACTION SHOTS Jerm. That was one heck of a trail!  Alot of the problem, I think, was the trail is washed out from all the hard storms we had. I got just alittle too agressive trying to get over that rock. Almost floped her once. When that Happened I should have backed off and went another way. My lack of experience  caused the flop. Not much damage to the jeep. Bent windshield frame. but the windshield had poped out and is reusable. How about that for luck. Really great time though. Beasley is one heck of a trail system to tackle. Big thanks to everyone helping get my jeep back on her feet. actually it was really neat driving home with windshield frame down. Got alot of strange looks. made me feel right at home, like being on my bike minus a helmet. Felt goog.

man it is hard to tell because the trails on most of the maps and the signs on the trail are different. I know the last trail we came down before the gravel was 93B or Blue Rock Mountain. On this map ( http://www.southernjeeps.org/trails/beasley/beasley-map-4wdriver-com.jpg ) 93B is actually 233 and it shows Rattle Snake hill at the top but I dont know if its right... either way it was awesome.

233 is the old designation.  93B leads up to the backend of 93C which is where the Wall and Rattlesnake Hill are.

I knew I should have came up when I got off work yesterday @ 1. Looks like fun that is one of my favorite places to wheel that's close to home. Is that a coil sprung YJ on its side?

233 is the old designation.  93B leads up to the backend of 93C which is where the Wall and Rattlesnake Hill are.

Our route was:
Park & pay at the Windy Hill Road lot.
93C into the OHV area.
Down 93E onto 93D
Get confused because the trail marker where 93D turns ito 93C designates 93C as 93G.
Start looking for a turnarund because we thought we were on 93G ("the sign must be right, right?") and come to a decent clearing, which I recognize as the top of Blue Rock.  The sign was wrong.
Down 93C for 100 yards (this is where all of the drama happened) and take a right on 93B.
93B until we hit 93A, then took a left.
93A to 93C, back to the pay station.

We left Waffle House around 10:20, were unloaded and on the trails by 11:00, and were off the trails by 5:00.

My understanding of the naming was that Lower Rattlesnake was on the 93D loop between 93G and 93F, and Upper Rattlesnake was on the loop between 93F and 93E, and since we came down 93E and took a left, that we had missed them.  I could be wrong though.

Point of interest - looking at the area on a topo map, It looks like Blue Rock is 3320'.  The point where 93B hits 93A is at roughly 2320'.  The route we took drops ~1000' in a little better than 1/4 mile.  No wonder it seemd steep...

last time I was there I went down 93d to 93c and came down past 93b and there was some puckering going on considering I was alone.

Once I get the belly up a little me and Ben are going to climb back up 93B and Mountain were the flops happened. I guess now I know we need to hit 93D as well  ;D

When me, Mike, Seth, and Brian went back in December, I'm pretty sure that we came in the Windy Hill entrance, onto 93C, then 93D where we turned around, and then we all piled in Mike's Jeep and went down 93G.

But good pictures. And looks like ya'll had a good time besides the flops.

My question here is did anyone see the flops coming and try to prevent them or were these attempts to achieve without using caution?  In other words, were these preventable?  While some flops are inevitable, not listening or using caution can put many folks in harms way.  I just want to make sure all "caution" bases were covered.

I wasn't there, but my take on what I have read is that if you are willing to flop, no matter why or how it happened...............................have fun.  Just don't put anyone else in an unsafe position.  :)  Whether these flops were caused by impatience, not heeding a warning by a spotter or simply not paying attention, the natural consequence is damage to the vehicle.  Glad it wasn't me.  :)

Only problem is that you could do every trail in about 3 hours! It's like 10 miles of trails. Lots of spider trails around and I love to explore so next time I am making my own map! All the ones out there are crappy. Not a difficult ride at all but the one trail where the flops happened had some descent ledges and 2 real nasty climbs! I would like to see someone try the left hill climb. I tried the right, that's where my avatar came from. It was almost vertical. Puckered when the Jeep started easing over. Jerm was like "I don't know how to get on the bumper" I was like "JUST GET ON IT!" :D

hey hey now, I have jumped on fair share on bumpers!  ;D

Only problem in my mind was you were so vertical (pictures do not do justice) I had this idea in my head that if I jumped on to much forward it would be like when a bird lands on the hood of a car half off a cliff in the cartoons and down goes the car...  nln

What about that hill we turned around on the first time out?

which one? If it was the trip I was on we turned around twice best I remember. One, Jeff tried to climb up some hill in his Rubicon but couldn’t so we turned around. That was the trail where the pictures Ben took my Jeep came from.

The other turn around we did at the bottom of a big hill. Jeff and his wife walked up said it looked too rutted out, we turned around and that’s when Jeff hit his home made stubby bumper on a tree and broke one of the end caps. That’s the hill we came down where the 2 flops happened.
