1) Dahlonega Walmart parking lot at 9:00 - rolling by 9:15. Will not go if rain is forecast.
2) Will go in via Black Mtn Rd. to FS55/42. This will be a bit different than the September ride for those who were there.
3) We'll go up to Hawk Mtn, a brief stop at Fish Hatchery, brief stop at campground with toilets, and on to Swinging Bridge. Assuming that the gate on FS69 is open, we'll drive to the parking and have a short walk to the bridge. Otherwise we'll get on Hwy 60 for a short distance to see if FS816 is open. Again a short walk down to the bridge. Pack a lunch, which we'll eat here.
4) Afterwards we'll drive back down via FS77 to Windingstair Gap and Nimblewell Church. The ride will normally end here, but those who want more can proceed onward to Nimblewell Gap and Amicalola.
5) If, like mine, your Jeep is not road friendly for longer distances, you can trailer it either to the Walmart or to the Jake Mtn. parking that is about a quarter of a mile east of Nimblewell Church. Between the two parking options is only about 5 miles of pavement.

Out of town family weekend with in or outlaws every year.
Some other time after school starts and we can ride all day with no top or doors would be awesome. Late August?

This sounds like a great time. Unless I hit the lotto, I should be home and would love to spend the day in N GA!

If in town then would definitely be interested. The strings of the in-laws pull strong on holiday weekends...

Staying in town this year... I'd be up for this...

Hard to plan perfectly that far out but sounds like a great idea

If time permits, I am in.

If I'm in town, I'm in. I'm 50/50 on whether to visit the family in Missouri or not. If this is a go, it could be the deciding factor for me to stay here.

I led a small ride back in September that could be repeated if people like that route: Nimblewell Church up to the fish hatchery, swinging bridge, and back. Included a climb up Hawk Mtn and back (might be a problem with more than 10 rigs) and a side jog to Hickory Flat Church. There were 5 others on the ride who could chime in on it. It could be extended to then go up to Niimblewill Gap and thence to Amicalola Lodge for a meal at the end. Or come back out via Persimmon Gap to Dahlonega.

Loved this ride. Very scenic. Definitely liked the Hawk Mtn part, but I agree it would be difficult with too many rigs. I like the idea of extending it as well. I always love doing Bell Mtn as mentioned in the original post due to the views. Either way, I'm still in for this ride as long as it's happening regardless of what route we take.

Interested.

Jonathan, chime in here as you have made several tracks out in N. GA.

I liked the trip led by Kirk. I agree a lot of vehicles will likely cause a problem. Now that I'm locked and geared better, I'd like to do a couple of obstacles I passed on last time or faced difficulties with.
-
I live up here in North Ga. Lots of places to ride just depends on how long and what kind of riding you want to do.

Just saw this, Amicalola to Nimblewell then Winding Stair and Coopers to Gooch ? gap would be a decent run, that is close by to most, but probably Doug and Kirk know more runs. Doug has spoken about some trails around Tallulah falls that may or may not be closed?
-
I'm still down for this. Who is leading. Jonathan? I think Doug is leading the January ride so he may not want to do both.

I hope I can lead a nice slow relaxing ride with some great scenery in January. It's hard to find new places but some of the old ones are great places to visit. Some of my favorites close I the winter.
Unfortunately I can't make the Thanksgiving ride. We are always on the road visiting grand parents aunt's uncle's cousins etc.

I always enjoy the January ride Doug. You do a great job with that.
Kirk did a great job of leading a ride like this in August, so maybe he'd take the reins? Jonathan also seems to know his way around up there. Hell, if no one wants to lead a ride, I'll head up there anyways so if anyone wants to join up they can. But hopefully we can get something organized //;D//
-
I'm confirming that I'm available with the wife... should be. I enjoyed the trails on my ride proposal, it would have a decent set of ridgelines and views, no stream crossings, some rough roads, some gravel, and its on the southern end of things, so its a more nearby ride. If we all wanted to head farther north that would be cool too, I'd personally be fine going further into the woods up north but it does make the whole trip longer. One thing, I found a cool place to eat outdoors if the weather is warmer, Turner's Corner Cafe, at 9 and 19. If its cold, not worth it.

Turners is one of those places that are a great stop in the mtns for a break and a bite. We had to eat inside last time, just too cold outside already on the stream.

HAS ANYONE STEPPED UP TO ORGANIZE THE TRIP MAP?
-
If no one else wants to step up, I will. Won't go if it rains though. Route chosen would depend on # who sign up.
-
I'm available to help whoever decides to lead this
-
Ok, I am stepping up, lets get a head count and a decision from group on type of ride we want
1) nearby to Dahlonega on 52, hit nimblewill, winding stair, coopers gap route (jgerhard has route)
2) further north? (kvom needs to lead)
eat in Dahlonega or at Turner's Corner if smaller group
-
Family may be in on this one.
-
The route's I would use are all-day and ppl need to pack lunch.
-
What time would this start? I can't commit until I see what time the Iron Bowl starts... If its a night game then I would be in for a close ride...
-
KVOM, what is your proposed trail route, I am interested in other trail rides than the one I proposed as well. Also we do need a head count to proceed.

The ride I led in September started at Nimblewell Church, north to Windingstair Gap, the Fish Hatchery, Hawk Mountain, and lunch at the Swinging Bridge. The return route we took was Doublehead Gap road down to FS58, then over to Windingstair with a detour to Hickory Flats churchyard, then back down to Nimblewell Church. This route is mostly dirt roads except for about 5 miles on the pavement on Doublegap.
After the bridge, the alternates are:
1) Those who've had enough can get on GA 60 and head back towards Dahlonega or north.
2) We can go back down to FS42 and FS55 to Black Mountain Road, a few miles from Dahlonega.
With option 2, the route could be reversed ending at Nimblewell Church. Here the rendezvous would be the Walmart in Dahlonega. I would probably lean towards this option; if we got back to Nimblewell early the ride could be extended by going up FS28 to Nimblewill Gap and then back down to Amicalola. People who wanted to could then eat dinner at the lodge.
I don't like leading large groups on paved highways. Start time would be meet at 9:00 and roll no later than 9:15. All these roads are well maintained by the FS and 4WD is almost never needed. The roads are all in the forest and climb along the sides of the mountains with a lot of turns. There's room to pass oncoming vehicles, but with blind curves the average speed is around 15 mph.
Note to the ladies: there is only one bathroom facility on the route. It's at the Frank Gross campground just before the hatchery. There is also a convenience store on 60 that we passed if going back on Doublegap.
-
If we started at amicalola and went to nimblewill gap then over to nimblewill church to winding stair it would juice it up some with some more remote and rough fs roads and less gravel road, the ridge lines are nice there too.
-

Ooh, I like this route.
-
The reason I'd not do it that way is that the entire ride is likely to be too long. If it's held out at the end as an option we can see where we are time-wise.
When we did the ride in September everyone was pretty tired when we got back to Nimblewell Church. Also, it will get dark earlier now than then.
-
Ya I see, going up to the swinging bridge is a longer drive. What is that rock creek road like, I assume that is the way up north? Also FS 58, what is the condition of that road?
-
FS58 is a good maintained road, mostly flat, along Noontootla Creek.
Rock Creek Rd (from Cherry Log) is quite scenic, fairly flat. I haven't been on it for a long time. FS338 used to be a great offroad route since it worked its way back to the rock quarry. Now the quarry side is blocked off by huge boulders and the entrance is gated much of the time.

Ok guys, do we want a half day ride or a full day ride

Full day for me.

If we go for a full day ride we'll use Kirk's route, if we want to do a shorter ride with mid-afternoon lunch at a restaurant we can use my original proposed route.
Myself I can go either way.
-
Either way for me. I just want to get out and ride!!! //SLAMIN// //popcorn//

^This. Doesn't matter to me. I going to the Hawks, Mavs game with some friends, but that's at 8 so shouldn't be a problem.

May I suggest cohutta road 64 and 17 there should be some good views this time of year. We could ride up to Dovie Allison house 1864-1895 about 2 miles off road 64 //popcorn//

Some pretty good trails up there but as for the views I was there three weeks ago and they were at the peak then. I'm sure with the rain we had they are way past peak and nothing but sticks now. Leaf color wise anyway. Still a fun road to climb especially right next to the sign you posted.
-
I would prefer a half day, but will probably be in either way.

For me that's a bit far for a ride when it gets dark at 5:00pm. It's 80 miles from my house to Cisco where 17 ends.

Ok, we'll go with the all day ride, KVOM is leading, up to swinging bridge. IF we have an issue we have a fallback plan. We'll post up the meeting spot closer to the day. Weather looks like no rain so far.

Jd, I'm not sure that I'm going and I'm not sure if Kell will go with me if I go, but if I go and if Kell doesn't go, then I will have a seat available. It will not be a problem to meet in Alpharetta, if this works out. How is that for a double contingency! Your post sat for a while, so I figured I'd throw a potential bone your way.
I'll find out more soon and let you know.

Ok, we'll go with the all day ride, KVOM is leading, up to swinging bridge. IF we have an issue we have a fallback plan. We'll post up the meeting spot closer to the day. Weather looks like no rain so far.
Given that that's decided:
1) Rendezvous will be at Dahlonega Walmart parking lot at 9:00 - rolling by 9:15.

I am just wanting to double check and make sure the ride is still a go. It has been raining for three days down here in Albany. I know sometimes the trails are closed if there has been excessive rain. Can someone please confirm the ride is a go?
