Post by: kvom on May 25, 2015, 06:22:09 PM
Wheeled there this weekend for the Wounded Warrior event.  Dry everywhere except washouts on the access trails.  Much easier than the last few times I was there when it was muddy.  Hardest obstacles I succeeded on were V-Notch and Rock&Roll.  RBD and Copperhead are pretty impossible and didn't even think about them other than to look.  V- notch claimed a good deal of carnage.  Punisher is a lot dryer than usual but still mud in the bottom;  I've never wanted to try it, but it's almost dry enough to be tempting.

Left side of Los Primos was easy, but the gully leading into it is fun.  Further right you go the worse the breakover.  Gauntlet was point and shoot, but lots of lines are available for variety.  Same with Loop Springs.  Did Good and Ugly, skipping Bad.  The short climbs opposite the top of Gauntlet offer a variety of challenges, with Gator probably the hardest.  The one closest to Copperhead is harder, but has no name I could see.

I know another group wheeled a week ago, so perhaps they can report what trails they did.

I was there on Saturday for a few hours before work. V notch, Gauntlet, and GBU were all awesome as always. I walked up Ugly and was super happy with my Krawlers at 12 psi. My wheelbase does not like Copperhead. Yet again I was thrown up on my rear two tires and broke a tail light/ scraped my hatch on the ground. I also broke my steering box there so that didn't help. Fun park for sure when it's dry.

Don't know if I can make this ride yet or not.

Looking forward to this ride and hoping it is dry.  I can't remember the last time I was wheeled MM dry.

@ranier1315 I picked up some extra lug nuts that I'll give to you to replace the two I jacked up.
@tazstoy I have valve stems for you to replace in your spare parts box
@RedDragonATL I also have valve stems for you as well if you are making this ride

Do I have to show up for the drivers meeting? I have never wheeled with this group. Can I show up and wheel without following the group? Or is this a fall in line and you stay there? If we come it will be just Saturday may not make it there by 9:00.

There are hotels in Heflin about 15 miles away.  Some other hotels in Oxford maybe 20 miles away.

There is an "America's Best Value" inn at the route 9 exit off I20.  Typical low-cost motel, but somewhat above the average for the type.  I stayed there last time.  One of the owners has a buggy and wheels there.  It's 10 miles from the park.

Marty, there are a few better built rigs that will try the harder obstacles.  There will be several groups;  no need to go solo.

Thanks Kirk. Will not be solo. Just do not want to sit in line looking at leaves. //BEER//

Never wheeled there, after looking at their site, will there be enough for me to wheel a whole day?  My unlimited rubicon on 35s does well, but i need to drive it to work monday.  all the pics on their site and their trail descriptions make me think i will break something or be done by noon.  I'm really wanting to wheel but I can only get off a few times a year to get out, should i save this time til later?  thanks all.

This park is a "choose your poison" park.  Proper spotting, gentle right right foot, and staying away from certain driver's and you'll be ok.

Question,  I have a project xj I'm slowly working on, haven't done anything but fix the rusted out floor. (That was a lot) it totally stock with 235/75/15 all terrain tires on it.
Never been to a park, would I be able to do much  being stock? 3:07 gears open/open diff . No lift
I also have a full size long bed truck on 33" mud tires.
Which one, or none?
Thanks

Not the truck.   The jeep would be able to drive around and watch others do obstacles and maybe.  Come out...someone will have an open seat and hanging out is half of the fun (to me).

The wife and I had a great time wheeling for 3 days in my WJ with 3" of lift on 31's. We had to choose our lines carefully and I did scrape the rock rails and skids a couple times. Other than that no damage and we went everywhere we wanted.

Strongly suggest getting a hotel room. I went a couple years back and saw the "campsite". Pretty sure it was just in the dirt in the main parking lot wherever you could fit your tent.

It's really not that bad.  Yeah the parking lot is dirt and turns to mud with rain but there is plenty of grassy area to camp in.  The facilities are not the greatest.  The restrooms are usable and the showers are questionable.  There is a dirt floor pavilion for cover from rain if need also.  It's really just the heat.  Camped there just fine many times.  It's really just  dealing with the heat.  There are 4 or 5 electric posts if you want to run a fan, just need a 30 amp adapter.

With that said is going to be hot so I"m on the fence between camping and hoteling it.

I jumped the gun, I only saw the grounds after a huge Storm hit so my memories were only of slick mud. Ill have to make another trip when its dry!

Who is wheeling today and camping tonight?  I might have to break free tonight or in the morning early.

I'd like to join you all tomorrow / Saturday morning (only have time for for a day ride). Does anyone know which time is referred in the info section for this ride, i.e. Saturday morning meeting is at 9 AM CDT (Alabama) or EST (Atlanta) time? Please text me if you know the answer to this question to 404-924-0988. Thank you in advance.
