I had an Atlas II in my previous TJ. 4.88 gears and 35s. The Atlas was a 3.8:1. I thought it was a good crawling ratio. (the TJ was a manual transmission)
My current Jeep (Cherokee) has 5.13s and 37s. Was leaning towards going with the 3.8:1 again. (automatic tranny in this one)
I'll be ordering one in the close future and wanted to see what everyone thought.
Opinions, anyone went too low 4.3:1 and disliked it?

I have the 4.3:1 and its a little low for me with 5.38 gearing. On the new axles i went with 4.88 to try and help this a little. Whats your first gear transmission ratio? Mine is pretty low and the stupid jk computer wont let me start in anything but 1st or 2nd.

I have a 4.3 in mine and I like it. But I do have 4.10 in the axles. I got such a deal in mine it did not matter what the ratio was.
I don't see .5 of a point making much of a difference. [beer]

Had to look up the ratios.
Gear Ratios for the AW4 are 2.80, 1.53, 1.00 & .75.

Your ratios are going to be way different than the last engine/trans setup. I've seen folks with 3:1 Atlas's on LS swaps. When I looked at v8 swaps I've always included axle regear and atlas change in my cost estimates.

Your ratios are going to be way different than the last engine/trans setup. I've seen folks with 3:1 Atlas's on LS swaps. When I looked at v8 swaps I've always included axle regear and atlas change in my cost estimates.
Not as big of a deal with the regular 6.4 swap since you use the same tranny but with just a few mods and a good tune it becomes a lot more apparent that changes were needed.

Don't mean to hijack your thread but I have been struggling with a similar decision so figured I'd just chime in here.
I have been planning on a 4 speed Atlas for a while now. My intent has always been to go with the 2.72, 4.3, 11.7 (what Clark has) with the 11.7 being kind of a throw away. This way I keep my current 2.72 and add the 4.3. Well AA no longer makes that combination. They said the 11.7 was just too low and was causing failures.
So now i'm left with either the 2.72, 3.8, 10.34 or the 2.0, 2.72, 5.44. Neither one of these seems ideal for my automatic transmission. 3.8 seems not low enough and 5.44 seems too low.

Mark, I've got the 4-speed 3.8 and its awesome. I also have an auto in the LJ. 3.8 has never seemed "not low enough" to me. And in cases where you need lower, the 10.34 is very useable. I wouldn't say I use it all that often, because 3.8 has been fine for most stuff. But on really technical stuff (going up or down) I really like having it... the control is amazing.

Same here. I have the 4 speed w the same ratios as Jared. I like the 3.8:1, it’s my go to low gear. The 10.1 is pretty darn low but it definitely has its uses. Steep nasty down hills are one spot I’ve used 10.1

On the I6 in my tj with 5.13 gears and 4:1 t-case, unless it's really slow crawling I had to use second to generate wheel speed in the auto.
So depending on axle ratio, 3.8 would be perfect to use. That would allow for great versatility.

So... revisiting this, really thinking on the 4 speed meow.
2.72, 2.00, 5.44
Thinking the 2.00 would be good cruising up the trails in 2LO, 2.72 would be good just random crawling and 5.44 for the rough stuff.
Any opinions on this set-up good or bad?

Agreed.
My dana 300 is 2.62:1. With my manual trans having a 6.7:1 first, it works well, but if I had anything higher (like an auto) I'd want a lower tcase. I think 2.72 would leave you wanting more, and i would lean toward the 3.8 if I had a choice (FWIW, I will be going 4:1 in my case eventually)

Ah. So just use the reduction OR the box and not worry about using them both?

I have not got to wheel mine atlas 4 yet but after speaking with AA for a long period of time i went with 3.8. Gives you the most options of any gear combo for the 4. More options available to you. I have always heard 4.0 was great so 3.8 got me damn close and if needed i can go to 10.3. AA said that the 4.3 and 11.7 would probably be to low to use the 11.7 at all, if ever. With all that said i will be running a 6.0 ls, 4l70E, and 3.73 gears on 35's. Trying to have the best of both worlds street and trail.

For what we do, extremely low gearing is of most use in steep downhills while staying off the brakes. Of course, if you want to crawl Boatramp and 1 inch/minute with stickies or go out to Moab frequently then low gearing is great.
Crawl ratio that includes transmission and axle gearing can help decide transfer case gearing. If 11.7 is too low you can always shift into 2nd.

Accidentally ending up too low is just a great excuse for larger tires. Gotta find the positives in everything That being said....my vote would be for the 3.8 for the options. Gotta make sure you have a gear for wheel speed around here.

After this weekend, I may end up with just the 2. Still undecided though.

Question for you v8 types. What t-case gearing, gear size and tire size are you running? Are you happy or would you change something? I am going to be 2.73 to 1, 5.13s and 42s with the v8. I have been use to the 4 to 1, 5.13s and 42s with the 4.0 or even 4 to 1, 5.38s and 40s with the 4.0.

I purposely undergeared for my 4.0 knowing that I'll eventually go V8. 4.88s, 3.8 atlas, 40s

I've got the 4.3 to 1 and with the v8 and 5.38 it was way too low. i now run 4.88 gearing in the new axles and wish i could tell you more but i think itll be alot better now that i have full use of the transmission in low range.

I've got 3.8 t case 4.88 axles and 40's. 3.8 Is a must for me with a manual transmission on the hills. I only use 2.72 when I'm playing in the mud.

I really like the 3.8 : 1. Real good crawl but can still generate some wheel speed if necessary.
