Title: Jan 15th 2022 Forest Service Road Ride - discussion
Post by: tjsahara00 on December 16, 2021, 09:43:12 AM
Okay everyone GTR is going to start back doing the Annual January Forest Service Road ride! This will be a day full of light, easy trail riding and sight seeing. No rock crawling, no hardcore trails, etc. We'll be traveling on Forest Service Roads in North Georgia.

In 2015 we had 79 rigs signed up. It was cold that morning but we had a great time!

Everyone's invited! Come out and meet some new like-minded  friends!

Here is the route we had that https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Walmart+Supercenter,+270+Walmart+Way,+Dahlonega,+GA+30533/34.7245478,-84.0288443/Flatlands,+Georgia+30572/34.7667053,-83.6674408/34.7992959,-83.6915184/34.7549333,-83.7246464/34.7230685,-83.7476185/Troll+Tavern,+North+Main+Street,+Helen,+GA/@34.6802855,-83.9660155,11z/data=!4m25!4m24!1m5!1m1!1s0x885f6628aa20e9f1:0x4de4441f05f22f01!2m2!1d-83.9726073!2d34.5387208!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x885f135c37b13275:0x2648918f938ad8b9!2m2!1d-84.0232474!2d34.7348115!1m0!1m0!1m0!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x885f37d8795e777b:0xba65ae915dfc45f3!2m2!1d-83.7296104!2d34.701087!3e0

I remember meeting quite a bit of new folks including @8lugLJ on that ride. He was in that big ole Ford diesel truck.
So what do y'all think?? Any volunteers to lead the ride that day?

Here is a video from that ride

I’ll be in for this unless my son has a wrestling meet that day. I’m happy to lead but I’m not an expert on forest service roads. I grabbed a pic off the FB page the other day with some GPS coordinates though so I might be able to put something together. I liked the Charlie’s creek/popcorn creek route we did in Dec 2020 as well. Looks like that route from 2015 included the back side of Tray Mt, that’s closed.

Flatlands is out and back from FS. Too much traffic from the internet wheelers pissed the folks off that live on the paved end so they complained and formed a HOA type deal and gated it.

Was that the ride that we stopped by the fish hatchery? These FS rides are some of the best times I've had off-road!

And those fried pies at that little country store place we stopped at one year.  Awesome ride.  I wish my TJ was going to be ready to go for this....

So, the 15th is a Saturday, is anyone interested in an overnighter? There is a killer spot on Tray Mtn that is plenty big enough for several rigs and camps, also one big enough on 180 just a couple miles from Tray, both spots on creeks, and both just a few miles 12-15ish from Helen.  Just an idea, would be weather dependent for sure.

Wow. This made me go back and look at all of my old GATR videos. I really miss the good ole days.  Here is a video of our FS ride a few years before the one Kevin posted. This was one of the best FS rides I think we ever had. Of course Bell mountain was till a challenging climb and finished the day with some carnage but a $hit tone of fun! I miss you guys. I may have to ride shotgun on this ride and bring my camera.
Here's the other video.

I just got a new Jeep and looking to join up with some folks for my first off road adventure. Would this be a good opportunity for that?

Using the same web site I use when we do this in Colorado, I came up with a 2.5 hr start.
I dont know these roads or if they are open or not.

There is another hour, at the end of Weeks Creek there is another road on the other side of 60 called West Skeenah Rd. Its not on Google Maps, but was open as of 12-8. Its another 45min.

So there is about a 4-4.5 hour ride. Do we need more than that? its about 20 min from the end of Skeenah to the Cooper Creek area

I know some of you know the service roads pretty good!

@8lugLJ
@Cannonballkev
@Grass Janitor
@classified

I see where Danny posted on our FaceBook page so we need to decide on the route and who will lead.
I have some things going on but will try to be there. I know Charlie's creek but that's about it. I think
someone said the route I posted from Doug had some sections closed. It needs to be an easy route plus
a stop for lunch or anything else you can think of. I appreciate any and all help on this. THANKS

All of these roads are on the southwest side of town from me and on the complete opposite of the counties from Charlie Creek, which is perfectly fine because there are several signs on CC saying NO OFFROADING (they really dont want you in there at all). No creek crossings at all from what I know on these, but should be easy roads for even a 2wd tow pig if anyone wants to risk it.

The 4-4.5hr time is a bit thin, West Skeenah alone is a 2 hr road, thats the first one we did on the leaf looker ride a few weeks back. Id estimate 3-4 hrs just from Dahlonega to this end of Rock Creek, especially if you are going to stop anywhere.

I am not sure if I can make it or not Kevin, thats why I havent spoken up yet.

I really wish I knew these roads better, I have a couple maps saved and such but don't have much experience with them to know what's what.

At some point I marked the start of FS 33A at Cooper Creek Rd, and have a flag noting to turn right onto Duncan Ridge Rd. which loops around to Wolfpen Gap on 180.  Anyone familiar with that route?

These two maps are helpful, but obviously having someone that knows their way around would be best.  I will definitely defer to @8lugLJ @Cannonballkev and @classified as they seem to know what's up.

Im using Trails Off Road and the forest services map. Its been years since Ive been anywhere near these roads, but have used this same method to get around various trail systems in Colorado and Utah.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=13PWpFMKC2-qAnwlVhbIWbUX5TXtImlCr&ll=34.71346786157661%2C-84.08390523688222&z=9

Weeks and West Skeenah will be closed, so the last two roads I posted wont work. The rest is supposed to be open and easy roads.

Trails Off Road shows alot of "points of interest" along the way. I'll study them a little more and see if I cant come up with some locations to stop for lunch. I would think a few spots depending on how fast we are moving and how much traffic is in the woods.

If we did get to the north end of Rock Creek and it was still early in the day, then we could run over to the Duncan Ridge and Cooper Creek area to finish the day

Lets meet at the walmart. 9am.  9:30 drivers meeting out of parking lot by 10am

Once we are on Noontootla rd, it looks like there are multiple places to stop along the creek for lunch. If there is 30-40 vehicles, then its going to be difficult to find parking regardless. But, we'll figure it out.

Im assuming that people are going to understand that there may not be any public restrooms along the route?

This will be the route

Forrest Service Rd 28-1
Winding Stair Gap
Springer Mtn Rd
Noontootla Rd
Hightower Gap Rd
Rock Creek Rd

This will be the supplemental route should time permit

That bridge has a pretty small parking lot also.

The access road to the SB is less than 5 mins from the end of Rock Creek Rd, but like @Jeepster1407 said the issue is there is not much parking at all, just fyi its almost a mile hike down to the bridge and there will be TONS of people out there if it is nice at all.

I’m trying to be able to make this ride.  Are there any places to park the truck and trailer if I tow the Jeep in?

If you feel the need to trailer your Jeep from Acworth then yes. There should be room
at the Walmart we're meeting at. Now just know this is an easy ride with portions being
on the paved roads while getting to the dirt roads. Now if I look at the map correctly it
will be like 39 miles from the end of the ride back to the Walmart.

Like Kevin said, this is an easy ride. These are NOT trails, these are dirt/gravel roads made to travel in passenger cars to gain access to camping areas.

Wouldn’t be a bad idea to start posting pics of vehicles attending in the check in threads.

Let's make that here in the discussion thread......don't want to clutter the checkin thread.

If I make it it will be in my JKU

Nice, i guess I am going to be the only one showing up in a Jeep club ride without a Jeep. Well next one will be in my Jeep that is supposed to be delivered to the dealer by 20th Jan. They also said it will be built by Sep 21, so will see if their estimate holds.

for now, this is my ride.

It’s not a Jeep club, it’s an Offroad riding club.

Hey everyone, I'm Brent from FB (how I am on the "Check-In" thread). I'll be there hopefully with another friend of mine. Should have my 6yo tagging along with me. Coming from Stone Mountain/Lilburn area, so going to have a haul just to make it to Dahlonega by 9.

Been out of Jeeps for 10+ years, but worked at a few off road shops while in college. Finally got myself settled enough to get back into the hobby. Looking forward to meeting everyone, and maybe even a few old-timers from my previous life.

Thanks!

Forgot to ask, What's most of the forum using for coms now? I always ran CB, but GMRS seems to be the new trend? does GATR have a standard/requirement?

Didn't think I was getting another jeep, so I tossed both my cobras a few years ago, so gotta buy one either way.

Most of us have ditched cb’s and went with GMRS. They work great with virtually no tuning.

Supposed to take delivery of our Jeep on Thursday. If all goes well we'll be there. Haven't been on a ride in years so I'm a new guy. Looking forward to meeting some like minded folks.

somewhere in the Smoky Mountains, not entirely sure yet where, but somewhere in that area. I hear NC might get 20" of snow if the storm hits.   [cheers]

Id plan to be there when it starts, not head there after. The mountains between Franklin/Natahala/Cherokee will be shut down by DOT at the first sign of danger, then your only way will be 65? I believe back around by Asheville. Be prepared to be stuck where you go for a few days also, and dont plan on getting supplies on your way because the store shelves are already bare. Jus sayin.

Wow… thanks for the heads up. I lived in upper Midwest and travelled all over northern states in dead beat of winter and various storms…. They mostly don’t close roads. Well good to know and thanks for the tip on supplies as well. I will pick some stuff up from here

GA/southeast doesn't really have the same infrastructure to deal with cold weather. Ice or snow will shut down everything in a hurry since it happens so infrequently

Definitely not questioning anyones ability, just giving heads up. Everyone flocks up here and the law and first responders cant handle the loads so they just shut the steep stuff down.

We got hung on the mtn from Cherokee to Gatlinburg when I was little once, no fun.

Definitely appreciate the heads up. We just moved here some 6 months ago from upper midwest and its good to know the lay of the land instead of my usual "learn the hard way". I did some backup planning in case we cant head over to Smoky and in case we do and get stuck, will ensure we have enough supplies for 3-4 days.
