Title: JANUARY 18 2014 - N. GEORGIA FS RIDE AND DINNER OPEN DISCUSSION
Post by: Digger on December 15, 2013, 06:31:44 PM
I am obviously new to your group, but I have a couple questions about this FS ride.  My wife and I have a little one, (part of the reason for selling the buggy) and I am curious how rough the trails are.  Would it be something that the whole family could join in on, or should I leave the wife and little one at the house?  Thanks in advance for details.

This is definitely a family ride. Just as the title says its mainly a forest service road ride. Most of the roads are gravel and only a few areas are somewhat difficult.

Exactly what he said ^^ Very easy/mostly sight seeing trails.

Hey guys!  I am going to try to make this ride. Finally got a Jeep under me again. I used to ride with you a couple of years back. I had a green LJ with white wagon wheels. I'm still hurting from trading it in but my four door should fix my jones!

I suppose this would be a good ride for a newbie to get his feet wet? I have a pretty much stock Bronco with some tires on it but cant wait to give this a try. I'll do my best to have the truck as compliant as possible. Thanks.

Here is a good link to the requirements.....     http://www.gatrailriders.com/GTRForums/index.php?topic=2396.0

But basically for this ride I would say tow points front and rear, cb (?), jack, spare tire, fire extinguisher. I would think that would be sufficient for this ride, but maybe a mod or ride leader will jump in here.   //:hlp//

Tow hooks or tow points front and rear. CB radio so you can here when we talk to everybody. Spare tire and a jack big enough to lift you ride. You should be good pack a lunch.

Here is a copy and paste:

Beginning January 1st, 2008, we collectively established a few rules in order to participate in a GATR trail ride.  Please make sure your vehicle meets the following requirements.

If you can not meet the following requirements, unfortunately, you will not be allowed to ride with GATR until your vehicle is in compliance.

1. Functional Parking brake or Line Lock
2. Tow strap (minimum 2"/20,000lbs, can be bought for +/- $20)
3. Jack (tall enough to change your own tires)
4. Fire extinguisher (must be secured and easily accessible; mandatory for certain ORV parks)
5. Seat belts/restraints for all passengers
6. CB with clear reception (***See note below)
7. Recovery hooks or D-rings front & rear.  (Cheap Idea:  http://www.stu-offroad.com/guards/gas/tj_hooks.htm)
8. Battery hold-down (OEM or after-market, bungy cords are not acceptable)
9. Emergency Contact Form (***See attachment)
10. Functional 4WD is REQUIRED. No 2WD vehicles are permitted.
11. Small First Aid Kit (Highly Recommended, Not Required)

*** The properly tuned CB radio is how we communicate on the trail systems.  From time to time, we can not see or hear each other and this is where our CB's come in handy.  If you are on a budget, you can pick up one of the best "budget" CB's on the market for around $59 (Uniden Pro510XL).

Since we are growing and our members are from all over the place, please take a moment to fill out the following Emergency Contact form and keep it in your glove box while attending GATR trail rides.  It would not be good if you were to get severely hurt and we could notify immediate family or friends.

Again guys, thanks for continuing to make each GATR ride a success.

Thanks,
GATR Team

"As SUV ownership has increased, so has the level of off-highway recreation. There is no special license required to drive off-highway, even though there are many different techniques and practices involved. There has been an often unspoken etiquette that is practiced by old-school four-wheelers, which developed not just so that everyone can get along on the trail, but, primarily, for safety considerations. But, with the availability of trail-ready 4x4’s, like the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, the Nissan Xterra, and the Toyota TRD, the slow and steady progression of four-wheeling initiation through involvement and camaraderie has been bypassed. The honor-by-association process misses the chance to be taught to the enthusiastic guy who just bought his first real 4x4. Not to sound like a snob, but it has become grimacingly obvious."

Hey all, first post and brand new here.  I've never done a 4wd ride before.  However I'm 34, just replaced a 96 dodge with a new tacoma trd offroad.  My wife and 6 yr old daughter really want to do this with me too.  Why?  Because it sounds awesome.  I've got less experience than anyone here, but I do love N GA mountains and committed myself to a truck i've wanted for 20 years now.

I've read the suggestions and riding setups --- Most seem to be for your serious crawling trips, this seems a bit softer and more up my alley.  Newb questions incoming:

CB - I saw your links for a cheapy ... I can do this if needed, rather not right off the bat, but can.  Have zero experience.  Yay or nay?

Pee Breaks - Wife/daughter will ride with me.... practical question in terms of holding up drivers throughout the day...I have no idea how you all run, but if nature doesn't call for my two sweet ladies this will be their last trip.....  :)

Tires - Is lowering PSI particularly essential for this kind of ride?  Doable, should i be concerned about purchasing an air compressor for refilling post run?

Camping - Do you all have a general open camping area or do I need to call a # and reserve a spot?  ATM thinking I may just drive back to Braselton after, but if the camping is easy that sounds dang nice.  Shared campfires?  Or is camping usually treated more private?

Dinner - I like dinner.  Maybe this too.

Thanks, I hope we can be a fit to this ride and maybe others if suitable for my sissy truck.  Being new to a group of new folks is frankly a bit intimidating, and I don't wish to be rude or anything.  Thanks and glad to answer or talk about anything.

I've never done this before either but I am stoked about. So you won't be the only newbie out there. Me and the family are staying at a hotel in Helen.  Too cold for camping IMO. See ya out there.

Well for the FS ride we usually don't camp. The people that do stay for this ride just grab a room somewhere. The bathroom breaks, there are occasional restrooms along the way, but most people (including the lady folk) find them a tree, to become more in tune with nature. The tire pressure has a lot to do with ride quality on this type of ride, not so much performance, but I would not spend the money on a pump unless you wanted to. As you can just drive to a local station to air back up, it will not kill your tires for a short distance on the road. The Cb I wouldn't waste money on a cheap one if you have any plans on using it in the future, as it would just be a waste of money. Look forward to seeing all the new guys out on the ride.

Tom,

CB - A CB really is helpful for knowing what is going on with the group.  When there are 20 vehicles in a row, it's hard to tell everyone what's next and warn of on-coming traffic.  However, if your choice is to do a handheld CB that has been purchased only for this trip, or do nothing at all, I'd do nothing at all.  Save the money and install a real CB in the future rather than rush the purchase and put in less than ideal one now.  Additionally, you'll need to tune the antenna for the CB, so keep that in mind.  I'll likely bring my SWR meter to this ride if I don't forget to put it in the Jeep, so you could tune your antenna either before heading out or during one of the breaks along the way.  Read this for how to tune an antenna:  http://www.rightchannelradios.com/tuning-cb-antenna-adjusting-swr

Pee - They make a product, like a diaper, that can be worn under clothes to absorb urine.  J/K.  Let's see what others say, but my friend carries a "Freshette" (http://www.amazon.com/Freshette-LIB355500-by/dp/B005SRVAS6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388457525&sr=8-1&keywords=freshette) which helps avoid the problem of finding a perfect tree on which to squat; If I can go, so can she.  Handi-wipes are useful for cleaning up the freshette after use.  On the two forest service trips I've done with this crew, there has been at least one pee break for ladies.

Tires - IDK for sure, but I wouldn't air down unless you already had a pump capable of handling the load.  This isn't hard core off roading, so you should be fine with full pressure and in a worst case scenario, just air down if you absolutely must.

Camping - I'll be driving to the meeting place from Cobb County.  I have not seen anyone coordinating camping for this trip.  Typically reserve your own spot and post up the location so others can try to get close to that spot (I follow others since I'm a noob with this).  A campfire is usually shared for a central BS'ing location.  You can be as private as you want to be.

Dinner - Should be fun!

This will be my first time doing the official FS ride with the group.  My first trip with GATR was in June of this year and it was a bit intimidating.  Each trip out gets better since my skills are improving and my knowledge of each person is increasing.  I've joined other online/local groups before and the first FTF meet is typically intimidating because you'll be the new guy coming into a larger group who know each other to some degree.  You'll miss inside jokes, not know what pushes someone's buttons, and probably screw up someone's name.  I can tell you, most of this crew doesn't bite.  You will find the interaction and warmth level will vary from person to person.

Nice looking ride!

See ya soon.

Clark

Wife and kid are camp pissers.. Not looking for any hole we cant dig.  Guess kind of a dumb question, was more thinking along the ride... making pit stops and holding up people... but maybe you guys have enough intermittent stops?  I'm an over thinker sometimes.

CB price ranges are pretty ridiculous... $30 number means no regrets, the $100++ numbers are probably overkill.  I think i'd go cheap and just learn to mess with it.  Honestly i got no need for a CB otherwise.  Then again I like messing with stuff... love working on RC car electrics:/

Edit: no real questions are unanswered.  Thanks Clark for the general info.  I think we might make a weekend of it and hotel up Fri and Sat night.

cheers

CB on the highway can be entertaining...some strange a-holes on CBs on the highway.

I have the $50 uniden pro520xl in my truck and jeep.  They aren't too old, so I can't speak to longevity.  It's the other crap that adds up...cable, antenna, antenna mount, connectors, etc, etc.

I just added PAs to mine...now that is fun if you like embarrassing your family.  I haven't been shot at...yet, but I haven't added the amplifier to them...yet.

Unfortunately our desire to be off the beaten path means that this ride passes very few toilets.  We will be on dirt and gravel roads most of the time and use paved road connectors between the back roads.

We will make quite a few woods stops and try to make at least one toilet stop but there are not a lot of choices in the mountains.

There will most likely be a river crossing again.

Tom, I am from Braselton as well (Liberty Estates). I do plan to attend this ride, your more than welcome to follow me up or if you have any questions.  I will probably be bringing my wife and kids as well (Boy - 1 yro, Girl - 4 yro).  There will be stops for sure.

Also you can get a CB that plugs into the cigarette lighter and can be hidden when not on a trip.

Regarding airing down, you will want to do so just to make the ride more comfortable.

Also you can get a CB that plugs into the cigarette lighter and can be hidden when not on a trip.

http://www.boatdepot.com/p-2595/midland-75-822-40-channel-handheld-cb-with-mobile-converter-kit?gclid=COeNoYfe2rsCFe3m7AodjBkAEw

Yep, I know Liberty Estates, I'm just down the road @ Mulberry Park.  Wife likes the idea of getting a hotel Fri night around Helen, so think we'll head up a day early.

That Midland CB you linked has good reviews on amazon... Without antenna the range looks to be about a half mile, so I'll probably need to do a little homework in the antenna department since i've honestly never hooked up a CB.  Any particular reason you recommend that one?  Just compact size for stashing away?  Looks like fun eitherway.

Thanks all again for help with my newb questions.  Also... happy new year!  //BEER//

Compact and good reviews. I think Cobra makes one as well. For the most part 1-2 miles is really all you need to reach if that.

Hey I've spammed a bit b/c i'm a newb here --- I'm picking up a CB + antenna off amazon and it seems like this is a good combo:

CB:
UNIDEN PRO520xl:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004VXNI/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3FBQ656M5H1MN&coliid=I2I89V682K9GAS

Antenna:
Cobra magnetic:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005N5X2/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1S1OJB5D8H1IK&coliid=I24Y35QUCI7K8M

Think i can run the coax out the back window and stick it on top of the cab.... Better than decent is what i'm after, from research seems alright.  Any other thoughts appreciated.  Thanks

I have that CB and it is OKAY.

I would get on a Tacoma forum and see how most of those guys route their cables.  You'll probably find one solution that is used more than any other...and for a reason.

Until you have adjusted the antenna with an SWR meter, don't talk on it too much.  There will be an SWR meter (or 3) at the ride.  Just ask people and eventually you'll find someone with one.

This ride can be done in 2wd so don't expect hard core wheeling up there. Just a nice leisurely drive in the mountains. Bell Mtn is the only place you might need 4wd.

Can't name start point until i scout a few roads, and I'm in Europe tomorrow thru Friday.
Hope I can ride them next weekend without too much snow/ice/mud.
trails must be passable by a stock jeep for this ride, so it's a relaxing day.

Everyone remember to bring everything they need for a day on the trail,
including lunch,
beverages,
camera,
appropriate clothes,
camp chair for the stops if you like,
diapers,
Always have TP in the rig
whatever you need.

We're talking mexican in Hiawassee after Bell mtn, but am open to suggestions as long as it is close to Bell,
or in helen is still an option.

It is privately owned and cannot be closed by the first service.  The previous owner passed away but wanted it kept open to all to enjoy.  Unfortunately the graffiti and idiots may have killed that opportunity for us all.

Can't say for sure yet except we will meet in the hills early, but it might not be very near Helen.

We will end up not far from Helen... probably near or at Bell/ Hiawassee, and go from some Mexican.

May go up to the gate at Bell since we can still hike the last 200 yards.

Hey everybody. I am a paramedic so being a member would be tough with my schedule, but I was invited to ride with an Atlanta Jeep group last year and had a very good time. We done Flatlands, I think, in Suches. I would like to meet up to do this ride with y'all if everyone is ok with it. Im pretty familiar with the area, I fly fish it often, so I should be able to find the meeting spot. I bring my own tools and can fix my own junk for the most part so I won't show up needing my tail lights wired or puking oil. I also have no problem patiently telling the noobs they are in neutral not 4 Lo.  //LMAO//

BTW i talk kind of slow so it is probably a good thing I don't have a CB yet.  //SLAMIN//

Edit: I removed one of the two places that I was taken to last year. I was not told it was illegal my one time being there.

TJ05World and I are going to meet in the Kennesaw area and caravan up there.  Anyone who is interested, meet us at the Publix at the intersection of Old 41 Hwy & Barrett Parkway.  The time is TBD based on the actual plan for this ride, but my guess is we'll leave the Publix parking lot at 6:45am since the "driver's meeting" is usually at 9am and it is about 2 hours to Helen.

As you probably have seen from my other posts, I drive ~<65MPH when towing the Jeep...and I'll be towing the Jeep this trip.

I'll be on channel 7 on the CB on the HWY if you want to meet up on the highway.

Don't let you schedule get in the way. I'm a Firefighter paramedic and I find time to go on at least three big rides a year. You just have to plan it.

BTW you really need a CB even if you don't talk on it. It is the most effective way of communication between vehicles on a ride. Ride leaders can relay information about oncoming traffic and obstacles.

It depends on where we start.  If it is in Blue Ridge, then I'll be going up via I575...if it is 'near' Helen, then I'll be doing 400.  Let's find out the meeting location and then decide the path.  Cool on meeting on the way, if it is up 400.

If you guys decide to meet up on 400 just let me know. I always end up eating at the Waffle House in Dawsonville by the outlets on 400 before N. GA rides anyways and wouldn't mind joining up either.

You are more than welcome to. We can figure out the time once we know where we are meeting for the ride. We will start around 9-ish as usual I suppose.

I know its been mentioned this is a really laid back ride, but I keep looking at these rigs you guys got and worried that come a river or rocky crossing i may stupidly rip up my truck.  Just picked up a new tacoma trd/offroad about a month ago, but with no lift yet think this will be alright to run?   I dont mind a few nature scratches, but would hate to tear something up at this point.

On plus side got new CB today, now waiting on this insane cold to let up this weekend so i can install.

With that said, stay warm dudes

I don't think you would have any problems with this ride. Our Thanksgiving ride in 2012 had a bone stock Grand Cherokee on it and he had no problems and we crossed a decent size river

Alrighty, good to hear.  I'll +in for sure once i get this CB installed.  I want some nice forest/mountain views with wife and kid, eat some PBJs and jerky, and see what this is all about since I'm new.  If wife/daughter enjoy, hoping it opens opportunities for more...wife doesn't know it, but going to try and get her driving some too.  If I a green light, lift here we come.

You should be fine Slowbox. The Tacoma is a very capable vehicle and these January rides are generally very mellow. Some great scenery with great people. Hope to see you on the trail.

The more the merrier, the timing would depend on where we are planning to have the drivers meeting. My guess is it would be sometime around 7:30-7:45 but we can decide on a time once we know where we are going.

Tom, bring it you will be fine as long as you have 4wd.  This ride is for stock and up.  Nice family ride with a lot of scenery.

On the other hand, we only do a few of these a year.  Other rides have much more difficult stuff but there are bypasses and we are always there to help.  Just keep in mind that stuff happens off road.

Oh I want one. I just haven't rode with large groups enough to need one.

I'm comming from Athens so I might just meet you guys at the Waffle House. It seems like a good central location for anywhere we might go.

Thanks.  It's a crazy day when I go scouting, so usually go solo.  I spent 14 hours in the mountains last time, hit a lot of dead ends, and seasonally gated roads, and spent a lot of time on Trey Mountain in the dark in a fog that i could only run the fog lights in and creep along at the speed of smell.  It was cool.

Yes, that is the time to do it...but get there early since we need full attention at the drivers' meeting.  Depending on the meeting location, I may be there 30 minutes early with an SWR meter.  Make sure basic CB installation procedures have been followed so we don't spend a bunch of time tracing down common issues (antenna mount not grounded properly; wrong part of antenna incorrectly touching ground).

Read and follow these resources:

Start with success in mind:

Be prepared to tune your CB following these instructions (i.e., read them ahead of time, have a printed copy available for reference):

reading up on properly grounding the CB antenna now, which i have yet to do. would i be getting "loud and clear" from truckers while i'm not properly grounded?
planning on getting a grounding strap and running inside to the tub, but not sure where to connect at the antenna end. the accessory mount for my teraflex hinge has a cb antenna mount, and an adjoining bolt hole which i may assume is the spot for the ground. is this correct/sufficient?

Ground the antenna mount itself, the antenna is attached to it and that will properly ground the antenna. You may not need a separate ground, but you won't know until you check your SWR.

If your getting loud and clear responses from your radio checks sounds like you have it grounded good already. Just check it with a SWR meter before you use it much so you don't burn up the finals in your radio

After the Holidays money is tight around here. From where I live its a 3 to 3 1/2 hr. drive. Thats about 70 in gas there and back in Mojo. Its all good. Just tired of blacktop! ;D

Yeah I'm right there with you on the travel. Coming up from Columbus. Going to be a long day. Depending on if I get my new camping gear in time, I might actually be camping too. Time will tell...

Checkin thread will have meeting place when decided.

AT tires are fine, I think the OP on that note said he had "highway" tires.  If we go up Bell mountain and its rained you may need a short pull with a strap, but you may not either.

I just spent a long day scoping out some cool spots.

We are going to have a great time!

Bring plenty of supplies for the day.  We don't pass much.  We do pass a pair of porta potties.  Show up with a full tank of fuel.

I will air down to about 18 or 20.

2 departure points

8:30am from Dahlonega Walmart.  There is only one.

9am Wolf Pen Gap Country Store
41 Wolf Pen Gap Rd, Suches GA

I will provide meet up points for late comers or if some one gets separated.

We will have a good many pavement miles between off road stints, but they are awesome for the most part, and necessary.  I've minimized them best I can.

No round trip.  Start in Suches, and end up in Hiawassee.  I'll check the miles...

From Suches to Bell on our route is 112 miles.  I rode 200+ today.

Sunset is 5:44 so we want to be on Bell by 5pm.  Leaving at 9am with 3 hours of stops (quite a few sites along the way, a store, lunch, porta potties, etc), leaves us 5 hours for 112 miles.  No problem.

No challenges.  Stock rigs will enjoy.  Good times in the woods and mountains.

Awesome! Thanks man! Looking forward to the ride!  //letseat//

And a big thanks for setting all this up! //salute// Should be a great time!

Below are the GATR rig requirements for all rides.

The CB is mandatory,

as are safety items like seat belts, battery hold down, fire extinguisher, recovery hooks, and parking brake.

4wd and a jack are also required.

On a forest service ride, we will have plenty of straps and first aid kits, but we recommend everyone carry them.

Rig Requirements:
http://www.gatrailriders.com/GTRForums/index.php?action=pages;sa=2

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT FOR ALL GATR RIDES:

1. CB that operates properly with clear transmission and reception (***See note below)

2. Functional Parking brake or Line Lock

3. Tow strap (minimum 2"/20,000lbs, can be bought for +/- $20)

4. Jack (tall enough to change your own tires)

5. Fire extinguisher (must be secured and easily accessible; mandatory for certain ORV parks)

6. Seat belts/restraints for all passengers

7. Recovery hooks or D-rings front & rear.  (Cheap Idea:  http://www.stu-offroad.com/guards/gas/tj_hooks.htm)

8. Battery hold-down (OEM or after-market, bungy cords are not acceptable)

9. Emergency Contact Form (***See attachment)

10. Functional 4WD is REQUIRED. No 2WD vehicles are permitted.

11. Small First Aid Kit.

12. Spare Tire (on rig or on site)

*** The properly tuned CB radio is how we communicate on the trail systems.  From time to time, we cannot see or hear each other and this is where our CB's come in handy.  If you are on a budget, you can pick up one of the best "budget" CB's on the market for around $59 (Uniden Pro510XL) or a Cobra for $49 at Walmart.  Try to get a cable only as long as you need and don't coil it.  Make sure you have a good ground, and get power straight from the battery to reduce noise.  Some staff members have SWR meters and are happy to assist with a tune at a time other than ride time.

Really looking forward to attending the ride as it will be my first one. The only down side is I don't have a spare yet and neither does my brother who was really wanting to join in as well. Just wondering if this is must on this ride?

GATR rules say you need to have a spare.

GATR staff and CORE members will do anything and everything to get a fellow wheeler off the trail if he is prepared and meets the requirements.  I've seen it many times.  If you ride without a spare, and have a flat, you cannot expect help from others than have come prepared for a great day in the mountains with their friends and/or families.  We leave spares at camp when we are at a park, but this is a long 1 way trip.

For everyone, we have these rules for good reasons.  We will be a long way from help many times during the day.... almost all of the time.  Folks are bringing their rigs and families for a fun day in the mountains, and while things do happen, it is how you are prepared that makes all the difference in the world.

That said, a used spare can be purchased for a portion of what a new tire and wheel cost.  Just needs to hold air and be a roller to get you off the trail and home.  Every used tire place sells them, so grab one, or two, this week.  Money well spent.

Distance vs. time.  Distance it's not shorter if you calculate from end of trail riding but I'd personally rather spend a few extra minutes driving before dinner than adding those minutes on after dinner when I'm bloated from tacos and beer.  Just my $.0 cents.

Also throwing a vote out for German food in Helen.

If we end in hiawasee, my ride home almost 2 hours compared to an hour from helen.  I have my nephew so I might have to double back since we are not making the loop to helen and eat.  I wish i could go the whole day but i have to pick up my daughter at a descent time and drop my nephew.

The last mountain is in Hiawassee.  I can't move it to Helen, so the ride will end in Hiawassee if you ride until the end.

The mileage from Hiawassee to Helen to your home is the same regardless of if you eat in Hiawassee or eat on the way home in Helen...

I think the decision on dinner is best made at the end of the ride. And really it could be a split vote; some stay in Hiawassee and some travel to Helen. Personally, I'd like some authentic German food. Just my two cents.

There is a 95% chance I'll tow the Jeep to Walmart, so if that happens then I'll be there around 8am and I'll have an SWR meter with me.  I'll be busy with my Jeep, so you'll need to handle the steps for tuning.  Look for the link I posted in one of these FS trail ride threads...it provides the details.

The unloading/loading is what is keeping the 5% chance open.  The ride in the truck is sooo much nicer than in the Jeep, but I may just suffer through the ride to avoid the hassle.

So my wife tells me shes worried about motion sickness.... she may get to spend the day in dahlonega.  She's only bothered when we're driving up say 129 at cruising speeds hitting curves and such.  She insists I ask on forum tho if anyone else who gets bothered by that would be bothered by the trail ride.  My assumption is no since we'll be be rolling along easy, but I may hit up pharmacy for some motion sickness pills.  If anyone has a spouse or friend who is like that I'm ears.

Nothing worse than being motion sick, and this is a very twisty route, but we will be in no hurry like if we were on crotch rockets.  Hard to guess how someone will do.

Road to Suches from Dahlonega is really twisty and we will be moving at the speed limit when on paved roads.  Other sections later in the day are snakes too.

I'm off work the starting Saturday until January 2nd and should have my JK trail ready by then.

I didn't see my name on the list Doug.  I'll definitely be there!  Thanks.

I agree...drive the jeep!

Yep, percentages have started to change...50/50 now.  I need to take the Jeep out for a spin at highway speeds to see if the blown shock has an impact;  I thought I experienced some wobble the other day.

The highway ride in the Jeep was fine this morning.  I am driving the Jeep straight to the meeting spot and targeting an 8am arrival at Walmart, but I'll go to the general store if I miss the Wal-mart time.

For anyone wanting to caravan from the Cobb County area, I will be leaving the Publix parking lot (1635 Old Highway 41 NW, Kennesaw, Georgia 30152) at 6:30am.  I will have to fill up with gas near the Walmart.

if there's enough room to pass and get back to the front to get more passing photos of the convoy instead of just once and being stuck in the back with no photo op, then i'll bring my camera.

that was a really long sentence.

or maybe you know of a few spots already, having scouted, that you can just call me up on the cb. i'll head to the front while you hold the line. and we can do that a few times to get some good rolling shots.

Not sure if this is what your asking cause I don't know squat about cb radios, but his meter read "1" on channel 20 and "1.3" on channels 1 and 40.

That's a deal for $15. I spent 3 hours last night retuning mine. I was struggling to get an average below 2. Turned out the antenna shifted in the mount and was no longer grounded (due to not chipping off enough powder coat). Once I found that, I still had  to clip more of the antenna to get back to where I was. Frustrating, but worthwhile.

Very interested to see these jeeps, scenery, and munch some sammies.  I guess we're looking at 50 vehicles maybe 100 folks.......now all we need are some zombies and i think we'd have a good season of The Walking Dead ahead of us.

I'll be heading up today. Being a long drive thought I'd stay somewhere near Dahlonega and make the short drive to the meet up site. I'm looking to camp but if I can't find a campground close enough I'll be looking for a cheap hotel.

Anybody got a spare handheld CB I can use for tomorrow?  I promise you'll get it back...even if I have to drive it to your house.  I've been about 4 places looking for one and nobody seems to carry them (including Wal-Mart and Radio Shack).

I've got my hardwire Cobra in the garage, but no way I'll be able to get it mounted in there before the morning.  Just got the TJ back tonight.

Thanks in advance...Rainman

Awesome job by the STAFF, and relatives, on this ride.  The water crossings and Bell are what really made the day for me...especially Bell.  Bell had some fun terrain and the best overlook view I've seen from NOGA in a long time.

It turns out that I am still an idiot with my GoPro;  Instead of catching time lapse photos, I was capturing video clips of some of the boring parts of the trip...mainly the surface street stuff.  Oh well, by Morris I should have the control of GP worked out.

There were some really nice vehicles on the ride today.

It turned out the carnage in my vehicle wasn't too bad.  Kell will be able to grow the finger nail out;  major cosmetic and structural attention will not be required.  :)

For the noobs...if you thought today was good/great/awesome, wait until you hit an ORV/OHV park with GATR.  Next month should be fun since it is at a wheeling park with more obstacles to help you build confidence and see what some of the vehicles in the club can do.

Wow guys what a day.  50 rigs.  A beautiful site.  Can't wait to see photos and go pros.

My wife, daughter, and I ask had a great time with the trails but most of all the people.  This club continues to grow and we had some really nice new folks come out for this ride.  Thanks for coming and please don't let it be the only time you join us.

I want to think my radio guys that all stepped up and helped with communications all day, especially when my tail gunner went dark with a loose coax wire and I had no idea what was happening at the back lol.
Sirius thanks to Bobby Cru9 for gunning and waiting on the ladies at every stop lol.

I would like to do this more often on a smaller scale and tie in a cookout at a pavilion somewhere.

Here are a couple of my shots...

No wait, look for the photo thread....

Great day, thanks Doug, Bobby, Matt and the members who helped with the ride.  It was full of great views and a great break from work.  The end of the day was awesome at Bell mountain.  Farewell to Richard heading to Phoenix and hello to some new riders.  To second what Clark said, if you liked that, you need to ride a real ORV park next, staff and club members will be there to spot you and assist.

Thanks GATR for letting us join your ride on a chilly but beautiful day in the North Georgia Mountains. Our first trip hopefully of several, in short that was Awesome!
My wife and daughter first thank Alex for teaching us what it means and how to “Air Down”, why we should Air Down, and share his Air Down gage with us and show us how it worked.  All enjoyed the ride.  We took some pictures we will post later, but wanted to shout out a big Thank You to GATR especially Doug, for having us as part of 50 Jeep salute to North Georgia.  That was exactly what I had hoped for when I bought the Jeep.

Mossy Oak Jeep.

As I bid you all a farewell, I would like to leave you with a few words of wisdom. I came from the speedy compact racing car world into a much slower, steadier, and yet, still as exciting as hitting a track straightaway at 156mph. I can eagerly say, I have the "bug"!!!But to truly tell the tale as to why, I must say thanks to all of the Staff from GATR and all of the others from GATR. I was a NEWB at what many parts are on a Jeep and what the right line to take was. Although more experienced now, I still have ALOT to learn as I continue my treck westward. For all the new guys, and gals, that came out yesterday, don't hesitate to ask whatever questions you have. These guys will answer and help you out in everyway possible. Even if it means giving you a part to fix your Jeep so you can get home. And that is the brotherhood I have come to know so well here. I will miss that the most. No matter how little you know, or if you have built your own rig with your own hands, these guys will help no matter what. And you can't find that in too many places.
To sum it up, thank you Doug, Bobby, Matt, Jason, Alex, Jeremy, Danny, Allsouth, Jonathan, Tony, Bear, Dave & Kelly, Clark & Kelly, Wes, Ryan, Kent, Brant, Kirk, Mike, Jay, Thomas, Will, Jim, and the countless others that I just can't remember at 8am. Thank you.

So Wes saw me disrespect my Jeep ... trying to clean a little mud off, say what you want.  Then at the end of the day I was picking my line getting into the upper ditch going down and Wendy started yelling hey hey, look at that , hey hey hey~

Lets put it this way, Wes only needs 2 wheels to get down Bell mountain.  He bailed before dinner to go clean his shorts up.

Not sure if I like the way you put that. But I guess I will accept, I think.

Clark thanks for the offer.

Is there a way to get to the top of Bell mtn without having to go through that V-ditch? I would like to get up there but can't if I have to go thru that.

Are you planning to take something other than the Toyota?  If not, why can't the Toyota make the V-ditch?

Not sure if joking or delirious from transmission fluid fumes.

Was thinking about taking some friends up along with the wife if we did some hiking/sight seeing in the area. The only running 4x4 I have is my f250, all stock so it would be in that or a friends stock f150. Looks like it might be too much for a stock fullsize, especially one that is my daily driver.

Blue Taco guy checking in... Family had a blast, much thanks for letting us roll along despite my sissy truck.  At one point my kid had her blanket over her head and my wife was squeeling "never again!!" but in the end, she said wants to do it again.  That stretch after last river xing got about as hairy as my truck could handle.  Props to the A-TRAC and bit o stock armor underneath to pick up where my skill (what skill) left off, we pulled through great.  Friggin couldnt have asked for a better chance to play around with this taco.

Wish my dang CB mic hadnt bonked out on me, already got it reboxed for return.

edit: o someone asked, the dramamine worked great for wife, 1 pill every 3.5 hours.  Otherwise, i had double-bagged plastic kroger bags in my dash.

Thanks gents, little gallery below *which one of these things, doesn't belong here, now its time to play our game*

Sandy and I had a wonderful time with you guys, as always with GATR!!
Cant wait for Morris Mtn.!

Richard, it's been a priviledge to get to know you. I wouldn't have busted you out yesterday but you are leaving us for the west! Sorry, had to be done!! ;D

No worries. It's always a good time on the radio.
Hate that I missed this ride, and especially as Richard is leaving too. If it makes you feel any better I broke a tail light because I didn't go.

Hate that you missed it too. Especially since you broke a taillight not on a trail.
Richard,

Thanks for taking that photo!!!  It is awesome!!!
Funny thing, I had to explain the pic to my wife. She couldn't understand the angle.
Richard,

Thanks for taking that photo!!!  It is awesome!!!

Cracked me up, had to stare at it for a second to figure out the angle.

So Wes saw me disrespect my Jeep ... trying to clean a little mud off, say what you want.  Then at the end of the day I was picking my line getting into he upper ditch going down and Wendy started yelling hey hey, look at that , hey hey hey~

Lets put it this way, Wes only needs 2 wheels to get down Bell mountain.  He bailed before dinner to go clean his shorts up.
Don't worry, I'm washing mine today.

Looking back at the "almost endo", i should have had someone come drag my tail down as the passenger tire kept climbing that wall on the right (going down from bell) as i was entering that V-Ditch.  I was confident that it would eventually lose traction from that wall and drop...and it did, just not in the time frame I would have enjoyed.  My drivers tire was not in the ditch so flipping over the front was not in the cards...just looked crazy with me descending into the ditch and my rear climbing.  My pants survived the ordeal and my nephew was hanging on for dear life!  He slept the entire way home then went straight to bed once we got him back.

I wish i would have been able to go to dinner but it just was not in the cards.  Had a great time and cannot wait until Morris!  Less than 3 weeks away and it is a great park to give some of the newer guys a chance to see what their rigs can do and improve skillz.

Thanks to the organizers. That many jeeps going down the road was a beautiful thing.  Couldn't stop smiling!  I realized I may have to get the heater fixed, we froze!  Other than that it was a blast!  Thanks again!

My lady just told me smartly;  There were drivers who were very serious, and those more casual.

She continued; maybe if there was a way to break into groups, we wouldnt be overwhelmed with large stops. And trying to get everyone's names in smaller groups might be more fun than so many people all at once.

..... just sharing her 2 cents, i'd give you my 2 cents, but mine aint worth 2 cents.

my two cents = i like turtles

Most rides we do smaller groups with like skill levels. Definitely join us again at a park, a lot easier to stay organized.

I was smiling like hell b/c how many onlookers and other drivers (even that sheriff early on as we pulled off a trail onto the hwy) would pull aside to watch, or even folks on 4-wheelers who cheered as a mile long train of jeeps rolled by.  The group felt like a well organized hazard that wasn't a hazard at all b/c of the communication.  Props to Doug and all gunners for herding us along.  I can see why having a good reputation can help keep open opportunities... That little sunrise cafe (?) must have gotten more business in an hour than they got all week.

I remember being at my first ride with GATR (Choccolocco, last summer) and during the separation of groups, someone, maybe bobby, said, "We need all of the hard men to come here".  I think I was the only childish one in the audience and I laughed...then someone told me, "this is a family friendly club".  I still chuckled.

being family friendly doesn't mean you can't have a sense if humor.
