Title: HOLIDAY FOREST SERVICE ROAD RIDE DECEMBER 27TH
Post by: DOUG on December 15, 2009, 09:09:27 PM
Andy, RabunJeeper, has again agreed to lead us through some great mountain Forestry Roads on Sunday, December 27th.  Hopefully the same creek crossings as last time.

Pack a lunch.  Bring the family or friends.

We'll probably meet in the same place as last time at 9AM, at the North end of Lake Rabun.

Post up if you would like to join us.

In so far:
Doug

Is this an official GATR ride? Because I kinda forget to grab my spare tire before I left to come back home.

what size? I have an old 31x10.50 r15 tire you can have, if you have a spare rim laying around.
Also have a 15x8 or 7(need to measure) Black AR Rockcrawler I will let go of cheap.

Doug, What's the address of the meeting place? I may be able to make this trip.

No, just a group going on a ride.

We'll get details on the meeting place from Andy.   Same as last time probably.

There's no road closures up here. They don't close our f/s roads for bad weather. The meeting place will be at the lake burton overlook/picnic area, on hwy 76 west of Clayton, east of Hiawassee. If you are looking it up on a map its at the intersection of hwy 76 and Vickers road. Also its at the end of a bridge that crosses Lake Burton and there is a sign there that says,  Georgia Power Jones Bridge Overlook. All are welcome to join.

We will be up there some time Christmas night, and stay until at least Jan 2nd.  Looking forward to getting the new Hummer out on some real trails.

See you then

Damn, I will be in macon with the family.

Lots of good trails up here and the drive down the creek trail is still open and the hill hasn't been graded or graveled yet.

You will have no problems on this ride.  it is a easy ride with some great guys and gals.  A little mud and water.. just because of the rain lately.  Perfect for the newbies to get to meet GATR and to break in their new ride while filling up your parts wish bucket.  hahaha

If I did not live so far away I would be there.

You'll be fine on these trails.  And have fun too.  Mostly gravel roads, with some dirt roads, mud, ruts, hill climbs, creeks, and running water.   ;D

How far is this place from Suwanee? I don't have a clue where it is!

You can meet Ben and I somewhere, but here is from Suwanee:

This is the same place as the Ad-Hoc ride, right?

Either way, I'm in! My friend from Hawaii is visiting, so it'll be the two of us in my Jeep.

Will there be snow/snowing up there?!? That would be really cool.

Doubt to see any real snow. I hiked yesterday up near dahlonega and only the north sides of the mountains had about an inch on them. But rain is forecasted thu. Maybe we'll get lucky!

Awesome guys, you will be passing right by my place, I will be laying in wait just beyond the underpass of the historical 441/105 exit in Cornelia at about 7:45 AM. I have a 09 Red Rock JK.

Unfortunately my CB didn't come in so I will have to keep a watch out for you guys, it shouldn't be too hard I will just look for a small convoy of 4x4s.

This is my cell just in case.

I will be laying in wait just beyond the underpass of the historical 441/105 exit in Cornelia at about 7:45 AM.

Sounds great.  Anywhere to pull in there?

Here's a summary:

Riding at 9AM from the parking lot just west of Lake Burton on Hwy 76, west of Clayton GA.  Map below.  Coordinates are 34.868763,-83.541005.

Gwinnett crew departing from Exit 16/17 at 7:30AM.

Pack warm, and pack a lunch.  Looks like a low of 30 and a high of 49.

We will be coming up from the Macon/Warner Robins area. I'm not sure about Ted, but the two of us in my Jeep will be heading towards Chattanooga afterword... well, not really sure, but we'll be spending a day or two there. Definitly want to get as much wheelin in as we can!

It was a great ride.  There were about 18 rigs, down the road, in the woods, cross the creeks, down the river, and up the BIG HILL.

Here are the pictures I took.

We had a great time. Thanks for leading us around Andy. I brought a camera, but forgot the memory card so I didn't get any pictures.

I did end up reserving a puppy though.  {toast}

I think it's the one on the right. They were 3 days old here and will be two weeks old tomorrow. They already look a lot different.

Both, but Emily claims it's for her. Hard to win that argument.

Doug, hoping the girls get the snow they want.  Get some snow pics!

Mike, cute little pup.  I'd love to get a yellow male pup to keep these two female cockers in line.

They had plenty of yellow males left. There are 11 puppies. Both parents looked great. The sire is 120 lbs. Scout only weighs about 85.  If you aren't in a hurry and can wait a couple of years, Scout and Wrangler should be pumping out a couple of litters.

I think the only carnage today was me.  Bent, and broke my crappy low hanging side steps.  Definately sealed the decision to take them off.

And in the video there was some questions about what gear I was in.  I was in 4lo in 3rd gear.

Oh and something I noticed in the video... My front wheels bounch up and down off the ground in the climb.

After some research, I realize my mistake on the hill.  The Rubicons with automatics hit 3rd gear on the hill which is equivalent to 5th gear for the manual.  It would be impossible to shift in the middle of the hill, so I should have been in 4th when I hit the base of the hill.  I made it up in 3rd but barely because I couldn't generate enough speed.  Below are the 2wHi gear ratios for both trannys.  The ratios stay constant in 4wLo but are reduced 4:1.

It was a ton of fun out there.  First time taking the JK offroad (ought it 10/1709)  Can't wait to get out there again with this crew.  Great bunch of people.

JK Rubicon:

6 speed
Gear Ratios
1st ................ 4.46
2nd ............... 2.61
3rd ................ 1.72
4th ................ 1.25
5th ................ 1.00
6th ................ 0.84

Automatic
Gear Ratios
1st ................ 2.84
2nd ............... 1.57
3rd .................1.0
4th ............... 0.69

I do it 2nd gear with a 5 speed, six cylinder, with a non rubi t-case, with 3.07 axles. You just gotta get your momentum up before getting on the hill. I tried to crawl it once in 1st gear 4lo and it wasnt happening, so i tried it aagin in 2nd with speed and went right to the top. But then again, ive been up that hill 30-40 times. Practice my friend, practice, you'll get it.

My Rubi auto stayed in 4 wheel low and 1st.   ;D

1st gear for me too, but I only have 4.10 gears with 37's. I would say maybe second otherwise. Oh yah, it's an auto.

My mods didn't really make the difference other than the tires.  They are almost new and big tread depth and lugs.  Not very wide though, and I am very heavy at 5500 #'s +.  5.38 gears.

There was a spot about 2/3 up that would stop you if you didn't have big tread and lockers or a lot of speed.

So good tread and lockers, or hit it hard!

I have 4.56's, auto, and open diffs; I was in 4-low and my wheels just spun.
I think I would've gone right up if I aired-down.  I was running full street pressure though.

Anybody want to get out and play on Saturday (the 2nd)?

We're getting a ride going on Saturday and most of the Atlanta gang hasn't been up there.  Stumpxj is a member on here but rarely posts; you'll like his rig...
