Title: Getting in shape 2020
Post by: Danny Kinder on December 12, 2019, 12:43:04 PM
Fellas, I started a new board for health, events, gym talk, and our annual Getting in shape thread.

Since we're here I guess I'll start the thread off right... I've been working three days a week with an ex olympian from Ukraine. These Ukrainians are no joke! This dude is a beast. I've never seen results this fast. I'm on week 7 or 8 and I can tell a drastic change in strength and speed compared to my first day working with him. On top of that I've been doing strength yoga training two days a week, and running three days a week. I'm really not wanting to get real big or anything in 2020, just tone up. What say you?? I hit the gym basically 6 days a week...3 days on, 1 off and so on.

I have really been wanting to find a place to do some yoga and just haven't put the effort in yet.  I have not have heard of "strength" yoga.  I'll have to research.

If you listen to Rogan go back in the listen to the Diamond Dallas Page Episode. His DDP Yoga is pretty intense "not ya' momma's yoga".

Rock 100.5 are always talking about this guy and he's on their morning shows every once in a while. Sounds like a good program.

*EDIT* - I'm still doing Crossfit. Not as much as I need too these past 2 months, work has been crazy and I got tennis elbow somehow. I just actually started back up this week though and hoping to get back 4 days a week. Really need to slow down on my drinking and get strict on my diet routine.

I stopped running when I had a cold this fall. Added 10 pounds back on, I don't know how da fawk that happened. Trying to get back in the routine of running and watching what I eat. Not just watching it go in my mouth. I've done yoga off an on mostly to stay limber and keep these joints working. I probably need to sign up for some 5k's to have a goal to train towards.

I was going to recommend DDP Yoga if it is generally local to you.
I need to start a fitness regiment.
I recently lost about 25 lbs due to "stress" & less consumption of alcohol. I was drinking daily.
I need to keep it off.
One word of advice. The body hates sugar. The older you get the less it processes it & more it stores it in fat.
I gave up sugar a while back & switched to Splenda. It takes some getting used to but once you do sugar tastes weird in coffee now. The only sugar I have now is in fruits.

I try to use honey whenever I need to add a sweetener. Splenda is not a good idea:

"You probably know sucralose as its brand name, Splenda. While sucralose is derived from a sugar molecule, it’s not actually sugar—it’s artificial. Sucralose is about 600 times sweeter than sugar, and it offers neither calories nor nutrients.

While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says sucralose is “generally recognized as safe,” or GRAS, it has been linked with cancer in animal studies. For this reason, CSPI has categorized sucralose as ‘unsafe’ and recommends people use stevia or sugar alcohols.

That said, consuming a diet drink sweetened with sucralose every few weeks likely won’t cause any harm, Pfau says."

No good deed.
Seriously,  thanks for the heads up. The day I get use to honey in my coffee (gag) it will be linked to cancer.
I'll switch to Stevia. I like honey in hot tea. But that's a cold, winter day drink.

Check out Stevia it’s a natural low calorie sweetener that’s better than the other man made  ones. I use it in coffee.

Signing up for a run will give you that boost again. Something or someone to hold you accountable is everything. It’s funny, I need to be held accountable waaayyy more than my wife. She literally has the best willpower that I’ve ever seen. Zero sweets & zero carbs. She just said “this is terrible for me” and stopped eating bad foods over a decade ago. Plus she runs 6-10 miles 6 days a week+yoga 3 and she’s a very strict vegan, well we both are. I’m not quit as hardcore when it comes to fitness as her, but I’m working on it.

Can one of you vegans or vegetarian types provide a sample of a weekly food plan? I'm thinking on leaning more towards a plant based diet but having an extremely hard time putting together a food plan getting daily protein of 180 to 200 g. Calorie intake around 2200 per day.

These items are out:

No dairy
No gluten
No soy

It's been a tough year to stay in shape.  Had a heart cath in July and they found wall of my left ventricle is very thick causing shortness of breath.  Doc said no gym but we reached a compromise.  As long as I keep it really light I could go.  I wasn't motivated to go so only ended up there 2 or 3 days a week.  My diet wasn't great but I was able to keep the weight gain to under 5lbs.  Went to Mayo Clinic at the end of October for a million tests and they put me on some meds to help.  Thankfully no open heart surgery ..... yet.

I cleaned up my diet that past 5 weeks and managed to drop the 5lbs but still carrying 10-15 I'd like to get rid of.  I go to cardiac rehab on 12/18 so they can evaluate me when I work out.  I've been getting to the gym 4 days a week and while the weights are lighter, I read about something called Time Under Tension.  Amazing the burn you can get with lighter weights.  Stepping up cardio as I can tolerate it.

Plan for 2020.  Continue to clean up the diet and a reduction in alcohol intake.   I already started the reduction and only have about 6 drinks a week.  Going to commit to diet and exercise like I did in the past as much as I can tolerate it.  Even if I get to the point I can't go to the gym, I'll keep the diet in line.

Good article

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/322827.php#takeaway (https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/322827.php#takeaway)

I don't eat a lot of red meat but do eat a lot of chicken and pork once in a while.  It's good to mix it up.  I've been bodybuilder lean in my younger days and never cut out meat.

Buy a book called Zero Belly Diet.  It's not so much a diet as it is a change in eating lifestyle.  It talks mainly about your gut health and foods that shut off fat genes.  Having healthy bacteria in your gut helps you get lean and remove visceral fat.

Quitting smoking is easy. I've done it probably 50 times. Its the staying quit,  that's the hard part.
January 1 will be one year smoke free for me.

Congrats on being smoke free. Sometimes it does take several pauses before the actual quitting takes place lol.

I've been smoke free since September 1996. Except for a few cigars here and there.

I quit smoking July 4th 1998. Busted my spleen in a Mtn bike accident and used morphine and 10 days in the hospital to kickstart my quitting. I don’t recommend it as a method for quitting. But it worked. I had to replace bad habits with healthy habits.

Being married to a vegetarian I eat pretty good but I do supplement my diet with chicken and fish and occasionally some red meat. I believe in balance.

Went to the doc today, new one, because I had some issues with my right knee. He made a not so funny comment to me. He did an acl check and said, it seems like you have no acl. I said huh! It was there. Then he said, well it could be real loose.

I have an mri in a day or two and he referred me to an acl guy. I dont think its right, and if it's not I'll suck it up and fix it. It was repaired two years ago. If it's bad news on monday, second acl replacement on this knee and fifth knee surgery.

Dang hate to hear that Tripp... I had a ACL transplant on my left
knee in 2002 and it's been fine. I will probably check on having a
knee replacement on that knee in the next 3 years before I retire.

Watched it. They did exactly what they were saying the meat market does by hiring athletes to promote their products lol. However, it does make you think though. It would be really cool if some medical science group that's not dependent on financial support  from our government or Monsanto would do some real life studies with actual results.

There's no doubt that getting rid of most meat and dairy especially red meat will help with blood flow and heart conditioning Mike.

I highly recommend watching Game Changers and listening to the podcast Jay brought up. This is of course for the guys that think you will have some sort of lack of nutrition.

If you want to do it for the animals watch : Cowspiracy

Chuck the athletes aren't just being paid to be on a 30 second commercial, they're actual vegans and they're high performance athletes. It's not like Babe Ruth telling people it's safer to smoke Camels lol.

I actually didn't even know what the word vegan meant until I was on the drive home from a GATR ride and my wife called and said she was going vegan because of some shit she read that was in food we always eat. She told me a few things to google and I called back 20 minutes later and told her I'd do it too. I've been vegan for over 6 years and feel better than ever. I'm the same size that I was at 30 y/o (6'1.5/193) except in better shape, run faster, and have more energy.

I had sausage spaghetti last night for dinner, bagel w/ cream cheese this morning, roast beef sandwich for lunch today, and I think we're having Cheese burgers tonight. It's not like it used to be when we started. There are vegan options at almost every restaurant and grocery store we go to. It's not super easy, but that just depends on how dedicated you are.

I plan or run more this year. Bought running shoes on black friday. I've been waiting to wear them because they usually smoke my calves because of the type of shoe (they are newton's and newton's have raised lugs that put you on the ball of your feet thus working your calves more.) until I've ran some.

I think I mentioned this in the 2019 thread but anyway I’m a big believer in Orangetheory Fitness. Not the least expensive option out there but it’s a great workout, something different everyday, someone tells you what to do, and there are studios all over. If you travel for work like I do you can go to any studio with the top level membership, so I’m able to stay at it on the road. I’ve run several half marathons and just got burned out on distance running, OTF is high intensity interval but I still get in 3 miles regularly and can run a 10k no problem even though I never run that distance.

I’m also a big fan of a “Paleo” type diet, primarily focusing on lean protein (fish, poultry, pork, eggs with occasional red meat) and lots of veggies and some fruits. No carbs or added sugar. Stay on the perimeter of the grocery store and eat whole foods, nothing processed. Fruit, nuts, lara bars for snacks. It can be tough especially with sugar being in everything we eat and carbs so prevalent. I have the hardest time with lunch. I can eat eggs, bacon, and fruit for breakfast, meat and veggies for dinner, but finding something easy that fits for lunch can be a challenge. I’ve found some ways to do it though and sometimes I just have to man up and cook chicken and broccoli for lunch on the weekends. I usually give myself one cheat day a week too. And beer...my biggest issue with the low carbs since I love IPAs.

I’ve been slacking a bit on both these things but getting back on track currently.  For about three months in 2019 when I started the paleo thing and was working out 4x a week I felt amazing. Slimmed down quick too.

Yes. No bread, pasta, added sugar, etc. I try to lean towards the vegetables and keep the fruits to a minimum but don’t worry too much about it.

I do basic , elementary yoga each day for 15min
. I eat twice & reasonably, almost never after 7pm. I do 100 situps , thorough stretching & then walk 2 miles -minimum-  each evening after dinner.
I sprint jog the final 1/4 mile uphill.

I have never stopped skating. My age has dictated that I not beat my knees up as I am older so I began freeride longboarding 10 years ago & continue to do so at any opportunity.

My family's New Year's resolution in 2016 was to walk the 2 miles with me each night. They stuck to it & we still walk together  every eve. (They won't go if raining like I will. ).

my wife is using a keto-derivitive diet combined w the above walking to lose weight. in 6 months she has dropped just at 23lb w/ 30 lb being her goal.

I picked up long boarding earlier this year since everything in our new neighborhood is walk, bike, skate, distance. I go a few times a week with my boy. We really enjoy it! Great way to spend time together and get a nice workout in. I try and go in the evenings to burn off dinner lol

Yep, my wife has been Paleo for almost 10 years now. And she stays away from gluten, dairy and soy as well. I typically eat whatever she makes but, I still eat breads, chips, dairy and drink the alcohol. I need to make the effort to stay away from the crap.

I tried the keto diet when I first started doing crossfit. I made it just a little over 14 weeks before I crashed. The keto diet doesn't provide enough carbs for a high intensity workout. It still a good way to start though.

thays great. Danny.
it's good excersize.

they street sweep the neighborhood we live in and it is out on the Western edge of the Cumberland basin that Nashville sits down in - about 15 miles away - so long, clean, sweeping hills thru it. I ,too, go in evenings when I can see cars & less people to see me bust my *ss, lol.

yeah , same discovery by wife is why she adds slightly more carbs with each meal but well before dark & that way she feels like getting excersize. I know what you mean by crashing after seeing her go thru same.

Not starting the year off how I wanted. Went to the orthopedic surgeon on Monday and I get another acl reconstruction on the 31st for my right knee. Makes the 5th knee surgery and second attempt on getting my acl correct on my right knee. 6 months of rehab to follow. Depending on how much he works on my knee, could be on crutches for up to 4 weeks.

Not exactly.

- 98' (going into freshmen highschool) - tore left acl and did a scope to clean it up. No replacement because they went through your growth plates and didnt want mely leg to stop growing.

- 1/05' - left acl reconstruction

- 5/05' -  bone spur rubbing on acl but acl is ok on left knee

9/16' - right acl reconstruction

They used a cadaver ligaments in both knees but it seems like rhe right knee did not take as well, or I did something, who knows. This time they will use my own ligment right above my knee which will work better because the body will like it better. He did say that he would put the acl a little over to the side more on my right knee this time. Also using a different doctor for this round. 98' - 05' surgeries were down in Albany and that would be a long ride in a car to come back up here after surgery.

I spent a lot of time fussing about my right knee to the doctor that did it because I felt it was never right. I would have believed him, that everything was ok if I had not had my left knee worked on a lot already.

Right now, my right knee doesn't have a lot of stability. I would rather just fix it despite the pain surgery causes and the rehab. I have no pain at all and can run on a tread mill, but I can not move fast to the right. Left knee is still great.

For those looking to switch or try Vegetarian/Vegan way of life check out show on Netflix called The Game Changer!!!!!
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Watched it. They did exactly what they were saying the meat market does by hiring athletes to promote their products lol. However, it does make you think though. It would be really cool if some medical science group that's not dependent on financial support  from our government or Monsanto would do some real life studies with actual results.

Interesting Rogan podcasts recently on this. One guest came on to debunk it, then had another podcast including a producer of "The Game Changer" to debate it.

-

I finally found time to watch this podcast. My opinion, what a waste of 4 hours. James spent all of his time trying to discredit Kresser instead of providing facts to support his or the movies claims. Kresser is a very poor debater and James should be a politician. I couldn't even finish watching it. It really threw me off when Kresser tried to make the statement that farm animals are not being fed B12, it's common knowledge. He's a certified nutritionist with over 20 some odd years of experience and for him to make this statement is just weird, almost like it was staged. Of course, that's just my opinion!

The only thing they both agreed was that a typical western (American) diet is crap lol. And when you compare either diet to a typical western diet you achieve huge positive results. But, when you compare a vegan diet to a vegetarian or clean eating diet the results are similar.

this .

I find one if the biggest changes in myself as I move beyond 5 decade mileage mark is how  much harder I have to work to "get-physically-bsck-in-shape-to-level-it-was-before" if I slack-off at all.

old adage , " don't use it & ya lose it." seems far more understandable now.

Kicked off the new year with two business trips a week each.  Got home Sunday the 12th with intentions of instilling discipline in eating and working out.  By Sunday night I was also really sick with the flu.  Great diet program.  Body cleanse, appetite suppressant, and no alcohol.  Three days of it and the worst was over but I was down almost 4lbs.  I used that as a springboard and carrying forward.  I was better by Friday and hit the gym Sat, Sun, Mon, ate right all weekend, and didn't touch any alcohol.  This morning I'm down a total of 7lbs.

Since I haven't been to the gym much since June (heart), I'm pretty weak but have to lift light anyway.  It's really the 23 hours outside of the gym that matters most.  Goal is to get some muscle mass back and get weight at 215lbs.  I hit a high of 238 at Thanksgiving which is disgusting.  I want to do this as much for my health as feeling good.  It's time.

DISCIPLINE!!!!

DISCIPLINE!!!! it's what it all boils down to.  I haven't had any for 3 years.  I haven't wanted to say it out loud but the biggest blame is alcohol.  Too many extra calories and poor eating decisions when buzzed.  Not planning on giving it up but taking a break and then it will be occasional.  I was probably consuming 20 drinks a week.

I'm with ya on the alcohol. I had 5 or 6 drinks Saturday night, which was the first drink that I had in several weeks. I'm on a 90 day trial run with no alcohol lol.

While I still drink I'm staying around 220.

Another knee surgery in the books yesterday. I think this one hurts more due to taking a muscle out of my leg, right above my knee. Cannot use my quad at all to hold my knee due to the amount of pain.

Rehab starts monday. First time with a nerve block but it did pretty well. Ita all about positioning your knee just right to tolerate the pain. I get to watch koh all week...lol

Surgery went well. They used my quad ligment for a new acl and fixed the cartilage on the inside. Because of the cartilage repair I'm on crutches until March. This one sucks more than all the other due to removing the quad muscle which has prevented me from picking up my leg.

To get in the shower, my wife had to pick up my leg those 3" just to get in with crutches. I'm slowly gaining strength to pick it up on my own and reducing pain meds. Been to rehab 3 times so far and around 5 or so months left to go..lol.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200213/3fd39c32e506288ec44e4a43de1f8edf.jpg)

When I had my ACL transplant in 2001 it was
more common to have a donor ligament instead.
Then toward the end of the year there were
reports of people dying due to contaminated
donor tissue. I remember being worried if mine
came from one the facilities.

Mine in 2005 mine was a donor and it's still going well in my left knee.

Yes mine is still doing good..... scared the shit out of me when
the story about a Minnesota man’s death was attributed to
contaminated cartilage provided by Georgia-based CryoLife Inc
came out in 2001 though.

I worked at CryoLife from 97-99.  Nothing like going down to the shipping department and passing a lab training room with 20 cadaver legs on tables.  The found and CEO (believe he stepped down) is a piece of dog shit.  Didn't give a single shit about any employee.

Who is still working out?

I'm just getting back into it. Took a few months off and then the pandemic hit and then working from home, back to bad eating habits, drinking a little more than I should blah, blah blah. I started perfecting my round belly again. Gained 14 lbs.

Hopefully I dont Tripp over those words later...

Eating from home during this pandemic has actually caused me to eat better than I normally do when I am traveling and running through airports.  I've been able to also exercise more consistently and have been able to drop 17 lbs so far.  Cardio every day and some strength exercises and I'm feeling pretty good for my advanced age.

We got a peloton in February and have had a squat rack/dumbells/barbells/kettlebells for years so we're pretty well set up at home. We both usually do cardio 4 times a week and lift weights 2-3 times.

If I ever stop drinking beer it will probably show

Cardio, cardio, cardio.....I need to add cardio to my workout. I hate it. I have no problem going in and lifting weights but, I just can't bring myself to do cardio. The Cross fit work out is high intensity but, it still not enough cardio to lose the weight that I need to lose.

By the way - I hate cardio!

I'm back down to a loose 36" Waist. I eat far fewer calories than I used to.

2 eggs and a Soy-sausage, for breakfast, 100 calorie roasted cashew snack, Salad and Veggie patty for lunch, and a granola bar in the afternoon. Dinner is a low carb veggie dish or occasionally a chicken breast or turkey burger. Fish/Shrimp for Sunday dinner. Eating less has been the ticket for me.

I still walk and work in the yard daily. The garden is cranking out a fresh supply of tomato's and peppers and roses. I have not stepped on a scale so I can't tell ya the weight. I feel much better than before.

Nice work Jimbo.  It's a very simple equation, just takes discipline.

My wife and I blew it out the first two weeks but got it under control and have been eating salmon, chicken, lean red meat, veggies, qunioa, brown rice, etc.  We have one cheat meal a week like pizza.  I workout using dumbbells 4 days a week and get in as much walking as I can tolerate.  I'm down 11lbx from Nov 19 and 6 or so from COVID era.  Decided last night to make the extra push to drop 8 more in July.

Well, I guess “ getting In shape”  means your BP as well.  I spent 6 hours in the ER wed.  Went in because I coiuodnt catch my breath and was worn out walking 20 feet to the bathroom.
Found out BP was 210/160 and resting heart rate was 110.
ER dr gave me PX for bp meds until I got to it dr.  I have an appoint Thursday.
I spent wed thru sun on the couch doing nothing. Went back to work today. BP is still high but  I feel 100% better than I did at the ER.

Yep, I've had high BP for almost 20 years now. Been on medication since around the age of 34. Sometimes diet can help but, most of the time it takes a little pill to keep it straight.

That is really high Kevin did they let you leave before it came down?
You need to keep an eye on that from now on.

Yeah, incredible...thank goodness you got to the ER.

If you're going to buy a home BP tester, the full arm cuff ones are the way to go.  I have a wrist one, and it's not trustworthy.  I also prefer the non battery powered ones.

No dairy
No gluten
No soy

Brining back the dead lol. You mention visceral fat, apparently, this is what I'm fighting now and its very slow going.
