This is a great park!!  Lots of variety, dirt hills, V ditches, rocks from mild to way wild. Lots of areas to watch others as well. Just a super fun park and very easy to get to off I-20.

Bypasses all over the place, a real easy park to enjoy whatever type of obstacle you want.

Looking forward to this ride!

Depends on the weather. We got a lot of drying out to do between now and then. You probably can't even get out of the parking lot there in 2wd right now

Weather will definitely help in the decision making process. There are 9 or 10 hotels very close (15 min.) I think we stayed in the Holiday Inn last time.

If we all meet at Cracker Barrel Friday morning, what time would everyone want to meet?  We need to consider traffic also.  I know for me coming from Woodstock, traffic will be terrible getting over to I-20.

From Woodstock, you should head west on 120 and down 101 to Villa Rica and meet out there.  Saves you a lot of time unless you just want to eat bfast.

You have a 1 hour time change going to MM.

I assume the times posted for Sat and Sun are AL time.

A better and quicker way, 120 west to a right on Hwy 278/120, then a left on Hwy 61 takes you right to Villa Rica.  101 is out of your way.

The trailer meg grandmother has is a bumper pull single with brakes on 1 axle i think. Needs new tires they said they could get at cost being a dealer but still got to pay trailer+tires and drive to FL to get it!

Post by: DOUG on January 28, 2013, 09:57:05 AM
That's a deal, and worth picking up and seeing the folks.  Lots of folks go to FL and could pull it back for you.

Where in FL?

Is the GVWR 7k?

Easy to add the second brake axle if you need it. it makes a HUGE difference.  About $250 for an entire new axle hub to hub and comes with springs and bolts.  4 bolts to install and easy to wire to the other axle.

Depends on if u prefer a smaller group and more exploration.   Saturday will be more folks.  I always like the Friday ride better if I can get there. I prefer riding ro watching others. If u like a big group more then Saturday.

Both days will be fun but I imagine the weather will keep a lot from camping so for most it will be a Saturday day trip. But...as Doug said, Friday is always a good day to hit a bunch of stuff. I am looking forward to Friday afternoon!!!!!

I always prefer Saturday rides. It's just easier to get to the park Friday night and get set up for Saturday + everyone usually trickles in on Friday so it's harder to get everyone on the same page. << Just my opinion

if the weather is just too cold or wet, I'll most likely stay at the America's Best Value Inn right at the I-20 exit 199 interchange.  Only about 11 miles from their to MM

I saw that hotel in orbitz. I first wrote it off because I'm usually not a fan of older single story motels but after checking out the web site it's clear that this one has been remodeled and clean. What's everyone's opinion about this place? I reall just need a place to shower and sleep but with f'ing bed bugs running rampant, I'm pretty picky. Thanks for the input.

Weather is not looking good for this upcoming weekend.  If it doesn't get better looking I will be out for this trip.  No point driving all that way for nothing.

Agreed. I won't haul out and pay to ride in the mud! Will have to watch weather for sure.

Still a newb (only two rides with the club) so I gotta ask... what's the problem with rain and Morris Mountain? Some of you just don't like to ride in mud? Is this particular location no fun or too difficult when it's muddy?

I wont speak for everyone, but I hate riding in mud. Overall less of a rush for me, less skill involved, pain to clean.

Mud does suck. Morris mountain has a lot of dirt between the rock obstacles. You end up with tires filled with clay and having to be a throttle junky to hope to climb some of simple obstacles. If it was close it wouldn't be a big deal but driving 3-4 hours round trip and $20 to ride the bunny trails all day sucks.

There would be a lot of mud depending on weather. But the way the weather keeps changing since earlier this week, I think we will be fine. As long as it keeps changing in our favor. But my opinion is a nasty muddy day on the trails is better than a day doing anything else.

That's what I like to hear!  Looking forward to this ride.  Weather is definitely looking better.  Trying to clear my schedule to make this an overnight trip instead of a day trip.  Hopefully some of y'all will still be camping.

The MM mud is particularly clingy, and as well the rocks are quite slick when wet.  Bring the horsepower or stay home.

I can think of a lot of things more fun than wasting money to play in the mud but if you like mud its a diff thing...

Weather looks solid. Dry till Thursday, some rain, then sunny with a light wind Friday. There will still be mud but it shouldnt be any worse than a normal ride at MM.

I just called the park and got the answers to my questions.  For you guys that haven't been there before like me, they said that we can show up whenever we want on Friday, that the gates are open.  They have showers and bathrooms there also.  He did say that they have made one change there for now and that is that there is no night rides allowed there and we have to all be in by sunset.  Sucks a little bit, but really no big deal.  I will be concentrating on getting my drink on by that point anyways.

He did say it was a little bit wet there right now, but not bad.  For the most part pretty dry there.  Keeping fingers crossed that weather holds up all week.  Been really looking forward to this trip.

Since I already had Friday scheduled off for this ride, I was considering going for both Fri & Sat. But if there are no night rides. I am thinking that Saturday only may be the way to go. It would save me as I wasn't going to camp this time and was hotel'ing it.

They are mediocre facilities that is for sure...for some reason I think they don't have hot water, could be wrong on that one.

But yes, the RBD event is a full tilt deal, those bathrooms get pounded at that event!

OK, now that we all agree the bathroom facilities are less than stellar I am going to try and redirect us to a more interesting topic.

I was able to get Friday off so thinking about heading over earlier than I had originally planned.  Are others still planning on arriving early enough on Friday for an afternoon ride?  Also do you have a predetermined CB channel to use?

Other than Thursday the weather is looking better every day.  High of 65 on Saturday with 0% chance of rain.  Looking forward to meeting and riding.

lol i just mistyped but idea is the same. hopefully uhaul doesnt take forever to hook a trailer up to my jeep

Good luck on that, last time I had Uhaul attach a trailer, they couldn't even get the ball size correct.

Yep, there is a big system rolling in from Texas/Louisiana right now. If it looks bad, I may cancel my trip or at the least grab a hotel room. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Richard I agree but I already have the 2" ball and regular plug on the truck so it should be a matter of dropping it on and going... but uhaul seems to take forever to do anything even with a reservation already on file! It will probably take me less time to load and strap the jeep up then it will to get out of uhauls parking lot with just a trailer.

I am watching the weather as well. I saw somewhere rainfall prediction is over an inch in some parts  :o ....... If it ends up raining friday I might just save myself the money and go for a hike or something. For those who have not been to MM the parking lot can become a challenge for some after a good hard rain  </LMAO/>

Ok, I'm just trying to get a grasp of what trails I will be able to do with my rig. Looking at the MM web page I need 33" tires, a winch and at least one traction device to ride class 3 trails. With that said I have everything except the winch. (I am running a 13 JKU rubicon stock) As long as there is a winch in our group would I be fine on class 3 trails? If not are there drive arounds and access to the obsticles? If I can't do an obsticle I would really love to video/photgraph those who can. Thanks for the input in advance.

Marc.

BTW I'm going no matter what the answers are but I really want to plan my day ahead of time if possible. If there aren't many trails my stock rig can negotiate I would love to ride with someone and video the trails.

Would I still be able to point you guys out when I get there after 9 am? I have never been in this park before.

For any new members please try to have these items for the ride this weekend. A CB Radio is MANDATORY for saftey and navigation of the trail

1. Functional Parking brake or Line Lock

2. Tow strap (minimum 2"/20,000lbs, can be bought for +/- $20)

3. Jack (tall enough to change your own tires)

4. Fire extinguisher (must be secured and easily accessible; mandatory for certain ORV parks)

5. Seat belts/restraints for all passengers

6. CB that operates properly with clear transmission and reception (***See note below)

7. Recovery hooks or D-rings front & rear.  (Cheap Idea:  http://www.stu-offroad.com/guards/gas/tj_hooks.htm)

8. Battery hold-down (OEM or after-market, bungy cords are not acceptable)

9. Emergency Contact Form

10. Functional 4WD is REQUIRED. No 2WD vehicles are permitted.

11. Small First Aid Kit. Highly Recommended, Not Required.

*** The properly tuned CB radio is how we communicate on the trail systems.  From time to time, we cannot see or hear each other and this is where our CB's come in handy.  If you are on a budget, you can pick up one of the best "budget" CB's on the market for around $59 (Uniden Pro510XL) or a Cobra for $49 at Walmart.  Try to get a cable only as long as you need and don't coil it.  Make sure you have a good ground, and get power straight from the battery to reduce noise.  Some staff members have SWR meters and are happy to assist with a tune at a time other than ride time.

MM is about 15 miles south of Heflin so that should be fairly accurate. I would say MM recovers very average. Lots of trees to block any sun that may help to dry things out. May the wind will blow through tonight.

But, we were there last year and it rained the night before. It was wet in the morning but did dry out fairly decent. We'll see tomorrow!

I won't know what I'm doing behind the wheel in all that mud, but I'm still going. If it's really as bad as some make it sound, I figure somebody will be kind enough to pull me out of the mud and I'll head back to Atlanta with my tail between my legs. Actually, I'll have a good time even if I'm standing on the sidelines watching the more experienced drivers with tougher rigs work the trails.

Besides, my friends are starting to think I bought a garage queen.  I need to get some pictures of my Jeep somewhere besides parked in front of my house and in front of the neighborhood bars!

I'm waiting on some condition reports from the guys already there. I hate mud. I can stand a hole or two but if the whole trail is a slop fest I'm out.

There wont be traction. If there would be some traction if you had stickies but even then its gonna take some wheel speed to get the mud out and to get them to work. My 1 ton with stickies is about to go through a rebuild so its not moving, but I had intention of bringing my rubicon on 35 until the park owner made that statement. When he says something like that ill stay at the house.

Sucks!

It does. Sitting here watching KOH all week and I have the itch to be off road but I know better! I had to fight myself quite a bit to decide not to go tomorrow. Its for the best
