I just got home, after another Harlan "fail".  Buggy worked OK on the short ride Thursday afternoon, and I parked it at the cabins.  Friday morning the transmission shifter is jammed tight,   //???//  So I got to ride shotgun with Brent (kennisau) and Ryan the rest of the weekend.  I disconnected the shifter cable from the transmission and was able to easily move the selector, so the problem is either the shifter itself or the cable.  Both are pretty

Since I could shift the transmission from underneath the Jeep, I was able to get it on the trailer single-handed:  shift with the motor off, get in and press the brake pedal, fire the engine, and drive until the next shift needed.  Turn off the engine and repeat as needed.

Despite being a passenger, I had a good time re-learning how capable a open-open Jeep can be, esp. with good tires and spotting.  Both Brent and Ryan did Mason Jar as well as a number of other technical trails as well as the rigs with lockers.

Hot home about two hours ago. Trying to go through all of the pics, but keep dozing off going through them. May be tomorrow before I can get them all up. For now, here's a couple of Danny in the Lion's Den.

What an awesome ride with a great group!  This place really lived up to the hype. I only took a few pics, but Jonathan has a ton. Also, I have some gopro shots of mason jar, frankenstein, your turn and a few more. Home safe. I have a few pics I'll upload later. Also has some killer video of Danny on Lions Den that I'll cut up and post soon. Danny's Lions Den run was one of the best rock crawls I've ever seen.

A little carnage for me. A big hole jumped out of nowhere on the Friday night ride. I plowed into it with my driver front tire and stopped me dead. Bent driver side sway bar link, blew up the frame side CA bushing and jacked up the inner axle seal causing a gear oil leak. Possibly bent the axle but not sure, I'll have to break the front end down and check everything out.

It was a great weekend of wheeling for sure and Saturday nights campfire was awesome.

Awesome ride, this place is outstanding.  Night ride - pinball was awesome!  Thanks JRay!

Here is my first batch, killing time (never wheel alone!), stadium, lower rock garden, some misc stuff, and a nasty rock ledge where Jay shares a wheel with Jared.  Plenty more to come, in particular Mason Jar, Frankenstein and Your Turn.

Thanks again to the leaders and those of you who planned this.  I had a great time, wish i could have spent more time with the group, maybe nxt time i can.   learned alot, hopefully getting better, and once i re-gear i should feel better about crawling.  spent most of my time on incline climbs and such, but over all was fun.  i did about 3 more runs on that short section at the entrance to lower rock garden, still going way to fast.

thanks to those that i spoke with about my son, i really do appreciate the thoughts, and this was a nice weekend get away, i also think the time alone helped me reflect and spend some time alone , just me, my jeep and God.  it was nice.   Im glad i got to see Danny run Lions den.  that was really a sight.

thanks again.

Tired. ride home was uneventful other than rain... welcome home //fu(// Got pics coming off the cameras now. No real carnage other than a rock light and the pass side windshield pillar got a new dent off trail 5... I hate that trail. Jeep did great and got to wheel mason jar twice. Still bummed about no night ride down the jar though.

Great weekend on the trails!  Enjoyed the time around the camp fires and the weather couldn't have been better.

Big thanks to Tony and Wes for helping with the mid-mountain tire change... and even bigger thanks for Jay for lending me a tire and letting me wheel on it for most of Saturday.

Early on Friday, I backed into a tree and pushed in the sheet metal on the rear passenger corner.  Might be time to look at some EVO corners...

Saturday morning, I got up the ledge entering Frankenstein, but sliced the side wall in the rear passenger tire, literally on the word "Tear".  Otherwise, the Pit Bull's worked great again...

Danny's run through Lion's Den was really amazing.  If he hadn't had the hose leak/issues he'd have been through it in 15 minutes or less.

Figured out the shifter issue today.  Banged the muffler/exhaust somewhere, which moved the exhaust over towards the shifter cable where the liming melted.  So I need new cable, muffler, and to move the exhaust further to the right.

So in my 2013 wheelin' goals I wanted to get out on a major trip and ride with people and see/do some spotting.  So at Harlan here is what I learned, which may be normal to the veterans but for the junior squad I think this is valuable to put out there.

Airing down 3 pounds more can make a 100% difference in getting through the obstacle
Never lose your momemtum going uphill if you are hooking up
The shady part of a trail and the sunny part of the trail will have completely different traction
Synthetic winch line is awesome
An extension for a winch line is awesome
Winching up a massive hill is going to happen, you can always get up (who knew?)
Snatch blocks are awesome, bring more than one
Undercut rocks are not awesome
The toughest tires can get cut in a second
Need a chain and bolt to strap up your axle when you are hi-lift jacking so the axle doesn't droop
On the trail it would be useful to have more than one type of jack
Spare tires are awesome
TJs are awesome, JKs are comfortable, but also awesome
TJ back seats will break your back!
Bump it, gently
Deep set sockets!

Off camber goes way more off than I ever thought before the Jeep will get unstable
Don't have passengers move/exit when the vehicle is off camber unless they are really in danger
Tie down that off camber vehicle

Deep woods off gets rid of gnats, regular spray doesn't
Maps lie to you
Pork wrapped with bacon is freaking awesome on the grill

JRay has an invincible windshield he took a direct hit from a 2 inch rock off of a dump truck with no chip or crack

And I clearly saw the adage Never Wheel Alone

Love the list!  Basis for a newbie thread.

A ratchet strap also does a great job of holding up an axle when you have to jack it up.

Spare tires are the squeeze, and
RULE #12 for a reason.
12. Spare Tire (on rig or on site)

we used a ratchet strap to hold the axle in place when we swapped Jareds tire, not a chain.  But in that circumstance, you've got to use something so a chain would work if that's all you had.

Great list Jonathan.  Whoever I have proved #7 wrong. Last weekend at Chocco I got stuck going up a hill. About half way. Tried to winch up the hill.  Jeep up top came down and hooked up. Two winches, one pulling up, one pulling down, and still could not get me up.  I will say though, I was deep in sandy mud so couldn't get much traction.

Not sure what brand the other guy had but mine is an XRC 8 comp with synthetic line.
Here's the proof. Video might be a bit long but you can forward through it. I was really deep into the mud and stuff. Remember, I'm still on 31's.

Nope. Was a little wet up there and we had mixed rigs in the group. Makes it hard to jump on the hard stuff and drop everyone else. I would like to put a trip together for a small group to hit all the big stuff someday. //OLDSKOOL//
