I've got a bone stock Dana 44 from an '87 with 3.54's for $250. Currently located in Augusta, GA but will be back in Macon tomorrow afternoon. If someone wants to pick it up in Augusta, I need to know by tomorrow around noon and I'll leave it with my parents. Will post pictures later. Doesn't seem to have any problems and no rust.
HOWEVER
If the price is right, I could be swayed to part with the 8.25 under my Jeep and build the 44. The 8.25 has Yukon 4.56s, Auburn LSD, ZJ discs, and a Ruff Stuff cover.
PM me or post here if interested.

Forgot to say that the 44 is $250 OBO.

What is the width? Same or close to a TJ?
-
Should be since the front axles are identical. Obviously you'd need brackets to put it under a TJ though.
Here are some pictures. It has some gunk on it (the engine had a big oil leak that got all over everything under the Jeep, but I cleaned it all off just a little bit ago).

What does the inside look like? Good or crappy?

I can take a picture for you when its light out. Looks nice though, the gear fluid I drained out of it today looked almost new.
-
I assume an 87 XJ?
-
Yup, with a I6, auto trans, and 242. Also, I MAY be able to get zj discs on it for a little more if you want.
-
Jimmy just keep it and build it as you have to money. It will be lot better than the axle you got now. If you dont want to i would ask more that you are asking.

Thats what I have been thinking too since I can actually get a lunch box locker for a 44.
The 29-spline 8.25s are just about as strong as the 44's though, just slightly weaker. The 8.25 has 29 splines, 8.25" ring gear, 3" tubes, 1.2" shafts, and has c-clips. The 44 has 30 splines, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" tubes, 1.3" shafts, and no c-clips.

Alex, stay outta this :D

Alex is axle blockin!

Jimmy, the small gain to the 44 is not worth the effort for you with an 8.25. You have a nice setup now, and it performs well. Unless you're going 37's, I think you're fine.
-
Haha, I was actually thinking about it on the drive back to Macon today, and I think Doug's nailed it. Minimal gain from big hassle. I'd probably go with a 60 if I went 37's anyway :D And to add more fuel to the fire...... http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/97-06-Jeep-TJ-Rear-Bracket-Kit-p-16942.html
