Folks that have manuals support them, and same for Autos.

I have a great respect for those that can operate a manual trans in sticky situations.

But Auto is by far the better choice for the dual purpose rig.

- Auto allows for a higher level of success for the novice and the experienced in some cases.

- Auto overcomes some gearing issues with the torque/stall converter.

- Auto allows more focus on the spotter in tough situations.

- Auto allows for an easy application of power, more smoothly for most.

- Auto does not put the clutch through hell on the trail if you don't have low gears.

Manual also has benefits, but none that benefit the driver so much, especially the novice or  //OLDSKOOL//.

I personally will have to say manual. With some of the off camber and precarious situations you are bound to face an auto would quit pumping fluid.

I wheeled mine with a manual for years and felt very comfortable with it, however sometimes I would kill on some hard bumps, and having to restart in a sticky situation sucks. Also I would sometimes get more throttle than I wanted, opposed to riding the clutch. I made it work and would have kept it that way, but I drive it every day in traffic, so I swapped to an auto with the engine.  Im getting old and this is alot easier to drive on the highway and offroad. I feel that most manuals are probably more reliable mechanically, not as much stuff on the inside to screw up.

Having a manual currently, I would say that it is not easy at all! After a day of hard wheeling my legs hurt! I wish I had an auto just to cut down on some of the stress that driving a manual can cause.

I had manual on previous Jeep, auto on this one.  Auto is much easier in most situations.  Shifting from neutral to 1st with a manual when in a nose-up situation on a hill takes coordination or a strong e-brake.

And no danger of burning the clutch when learning.

For harder-core wheeling, a reverse manual shift pattern allows hitting reverse from 1st almost instantly, something that can prevent a rollover.  That's why almost every buggy and rock racer you see had this.  The auto parking brake is almost always superior to the stock Jeep e-brake.

Auto. I drive a manual, love it, wheel it nicely but it's just easier with an auto geared correctly. The clutch doesn't mess with concentration or being able to pay attention to a spotter because the clutch is 2nd nature like a brake or gas pedal to people who use it everyday. Still it's 1 more thing to deal with. I do like being in 4Lo, 1st gear and the jeep just drives itself and going down a hill it will crawl without any brakes needed. The end of it is simple, outside of pro, manual or auto is personal choice and 1 really isn't that better than the other with 2 skilled drivers compared

I drive a manual everyday so shifting and clutch work doesn't bother me. There is a big price difference between manual and auto Jk's

Both have lots of pros and cons, many of which have been touched above.  I have wheeled both, and drove both around town. It comes down to personal choice and driving style.

I have ended up with the fact that a properly set up auto is for me. Geared low with a low TC, it crawls great. Keeps me smoother on the obstacles and allows me to concentrate on my spotter and the obstacle and too just have fun!  It is a hobby after all and a manual to me(at my age) is just a little more like work.

In 2wd on the road it is just easier to drive while at the mall. It's hard to drink my mochachino double latte half cafe while picking up soccer moms AND shift gears.

down a hill it will crawl without any brakes needed.

Auto will do this too when shifted manually into 1st gear...

As much as I love a manual, go auto. If I ever buy a rock crawler/rock bouncer/dedicated trailer queen, it'll be auto.

A manual can be just as good if you have a strong engine but overall Autos are smoother.

You have had both... is this just a thread to stir the pot?? JK

I would throw this out there. Me, myself, I test drove a JK x and didn't like the clutch feel, I test drove my Rubi and loved it. I didn't have a Rubi budget but the deal they gave me (I think they screwed themselves) was too good to pass up for the Rubi. With that being said, I would have to agree with some of the above comments about manuals. However, with the gearing and t/case of a Rubi, I love my manual, y'all seen me wheel, this is my first Jeep for all intents and purposes. When wheeling, it feels natural to work the clutch and shifter. I have no problem stopping on a climb or drop... okay, sometimes but if it was easy, soccer moms would be out there doing it too.  Not being a smart a$$ but I like to drive my Jeep, not ride it.

With all that being said, if we were to sell our 4Runner and get a 4dr JK, we would get an auto.  But I am not giving up my 2dr Rubi manual.

 </LMAO/>  Manual. I would not know what to do with an auto on the rocks. It takes more skill to wheel a manny ;D and do it with style {popcorn} It is not for everyone. If you gear properly and get a clutch worth a dang, you will love it. gears and clutch boys, gears and clutch {peek}

I had both and I now own a manual my two cents may not be worth much but te 2013 jk feels like it has more power with a manual over automatic I drove both in rubi and non rubi I drive mine everyday from Atlanta to school and back been stuck in traffic it don't bother me even though I am learning how much clutch works off road I enjoy it more. I have a better feel of what I am doing off road different feel. But hey it's just me and what Do I know ha ha lol

Have always been a manual guy,  especially with my cars.  This being my first Jeep I had to go with a manual just because its what I prefer.  Its a good workout and is more technical imo.  I too dont know much but I am also willing to bet as I get older Ill be singing a different tune but Ill be in a manual as long as possible.  Like someone said before I too wouldnt know what to do with myself with no clutch pedal  </LMAO/>

My choice was strictly based on street driving. My last two vehicles were 6spd sports cars, I was ready for a break. Glad I have it for wheeling too. Let's me focus on spotters, lines, etc.

I love manual transmissions for autox and road racing. I even drag raced with a manual transmisson for years.

My Tj started out as a 5 speed manual but once the axles went to dana 60's and the tires got to 40's I swaped it to an auto and have been much happier ever since. It is alot easier to handle on the crazy stuff with one foot on the brake and one on the gas.

I like both and know that both are doable off road, just that one is easier to handle.

I have wheeled both, I currently prefer AUTO since my wife drives and I spot. However I love how manuals actually allow you to creep up/down hills. My Jeep has the 1-2 selection but I wish it would stay in 1st a bit longer when climbing.

When you go down to 1 on the auto, it should not change gears.

If I am creeping it doesnt change gears, but when the RPMs reach about 3000-3200 it goes to 2nd. As soon as the gas is released it slams back into 1st

Something is up, shouldn't do that.

Add this to your jeep and be happy.

Luk Pro Gold. It is made to slip. Centerforce is on or off, no in between. Once you get the clutch skills down, it is second nature.

No, they are awesome.  Google them. They are in CA.

Luk PRO GOLD CLUTCH

I found out about them on a Colorado rock crawlin website.  I'm glad he likes it or I think he would have made me put another one in his Jeep.

looks like they have no applications for the JK... only the TJ.  I still have the OEM clutch in my rig and I find it does allow for quite a bit of slippage. Which helps you hang on the clutch with no brakes.

I thought the JK computer held brakes on a hill in 4 low while you let out the clutch.  Know how that works?

The "Hill Assist" is on the '09 & up. Mine is an '08. But how it works, I assume like my Prius, you mash the brakes to the floor and hold it for a second and the computer acts like a line lock holding the brakes until you move. I'm not too sure how that would work when crawling as you want the brakes and gas at the same time to limit speed. That is one of the things I like about the Rubi gearing, I can dump the clutch and limit my speed with the brakes. In stock forum the Rubi has a 73.1:1 crawl ratio compared to the non-rubi 38.9:1 crawl ratio.

Ben, you can laugh all you want.. It's was my choice of a company car and it gets ~43mpg with me driving it "digital".  But hey...  WTF did I just compare a Jeep to a Prius?
