//cheers2//
So yesterday (Sunday) my buddy and I took our rigs to Durham town. Apparently union city got a bunch of rain last Friday, so it was pretty muddy.
First we hit the rocks, to get warmed up and get some pedal control. My buddy seems to lack pedal control, and he hung up his front axle on a rock. It was no big deal and he backed right off it but it scared him and he decided to park his truck on the road and just ride my h2 with me back on the mud trails.
We hit the trail in my h2. First obstacle is a deep mud pit with a decent hill climb. Keep in mind it's my first real offroading experience in my new car (scared //:o// ) it was no problem but it gave me the itch. So we kept going for a few miles, conquering crazy obstacles I never thought I'd attempt. It was awesome.
The deeper in the woods we got, the tighter the trailers got, and deep the ruts got. I got stuck the first time. After about an hour of unsuccessfully trying to use the hi-lift jack as a come along, a group of about 6 jeeps rolled up to save the day (I got an earful from the jeepers about pulling out a hummer). They winched me out and off we went. About 100 yards down the trail, i attempted to bypass an extremely deep rut by driving around. H2 was too wide and the back end slipped into the rut, rendering me door deep in mud at an uncomfortable angle, both axles at full flex. Once again the very nice built up jeeps came and winched us out.
At this point I decided to turn around. I figured I'd only continue to get stuck.
So I thanked the jeeps and headed back. On the way back I hit a mud puddle too slow and got high centered. Long story short, hiked miles no phone no water, rode on back of Polaris for about an hour lost. Ended up getting her home in good health!
Great day overall!
Ill add pics and videos soon. My buddy has them.

Yep and yep...lol...glad you got out! I had my own similar on my own experience. Never again.

Been there...
So, what is the next upgrade on which you are going to spend money? Let's see what lesson you learned!
-
So what is the first mod gonna be?
Sent off camber

Correct answer...Jeep TJ :) I'm really just kidding around...kind of.
Nah, if you go to DP without a winch, you're asking to be helped out by others at some point or you are just along to take pictures of other people doing stuff.
-
Long as you had fun, all the rest will come.
-
Glad you had fun!
DT is an absolute hot mess of a place to be after a rain...but you know that now :)
Jeep guys usually start salivating when they see Hummers heading out to the trails because they know they'll be recovering them soon, no hate there, just a fact of life.

Yep I need a winch. Hands down. I almost bought one for 800$ last week, only to find out I'd have to buy a 1600$ warn bumper for my hummer, then get the winch. I didn't have the dough for that.

Either a winch or a riding buddy who isn't afraid to take his truck off the pavement!
-
Good story! Old news as I already heard it from one of the Jeepers who pulled you out. //;D//
Bummer you had to hike out. Glad you got out OK in the end.

Back in the day, there was a Hummer group that wheeled at Tellico. They seemed to do OK, although most seemed to be over careful of their paint jobs.

I was impressed by the hummer. It walked up mud hills that the tractor had to bypass!

Now if that was a HUMVEE.........Just kidding Dude...yes I think a winch and a front selectable front locker would be in order. Actually the locker first.

If you are going to be in mud more than rocks, then I would go with a winch first, especially if you plan to wheel alone for a while. I was with a Rubicon JK with 35s at DP that was stuck with the factory lockers engaged, but his winch pulled him out.
$1600 for a bumper is WAY too much. Find a fab shop or learn to weld. You should be able to make a bumper for that beast for relatively cheap, if you can get access to equipment. I recently heard about 'rent a shop' and 'makerspace' concepts, which, as I was told, allow you to rent access to a facility that is loaded with 'shop' tools, such as those required for metal working. Here is what I found in Atlanta and I've asked them about their metal working capability via email...no response yet: http://decaturmakers.org/
Their website is pretty pathetic, but the concept is pretty damn cool.

Oooooh I want to wheel with a hummer

My hippie side is digging that right there.

This is one I had seen/heard on a news report: https://secure.techshop.ws/memberships.cfm?step=select_location&code=TechShop&storelist=1,4,5,6&offer=58
I believe there have been some successful iPhone accessories created at TechShop. I also believe a guy built a car there. http://money.cnn.com/2010/09/14/technology/techshop/
A friend of mine mentioned these types of shops to me since he stumbled up on it while looking for a 3D printer...yep, those type of shops have 3D printers available (of course, for about $1,200 you can have your own). I wish Atlanta had a techshop before I bought a few grand worth of tools. //::)//

Man yeah. Come play at Chocco or Morris mountain.
I saw one of those shop things on the DIY network one day and super wish we had one.
