Title: Spooling a steel winch cable in correctly

hello to all,
i just purchased a SB xrc10 10,000 pound winch for my taco.
i installed it today, and free spooled some out, and all of the cable got a little loose, almost like backlashing a baitcaster.
i have googled how to spool it correctly so all the rope is even and layered correctly, but do you all have any techniques?
also, my brother has the xrc8 on his jeep, and his steel rope has started to get a little rusty over the year that he has had it. his winch is fully exposed on the top of his bumper, but mine is inside of my bumper. should i spray wd40 on the cable and spool every now and then to prevent the rust?

Walk it out just about all the way and put it under a little tension (tree, vehicle, etc.)  and winch it back in. There is a cable lube out there that will help the cable stay at it's prime.

I've always done as stated, but tied my cable to a light pole, power pole, etc. I put the rig in neutral, and do steering input as needed.
