Title: 2014 Schedule/Comment Thread
Post by: tcdawg on October 28, 2013, 06:07:23 PM
GaTR members, post up your thoughts of the 2013 schedule; the rides and other events. Lets hear what you thought, and don't just blow sunshine up our tail pipes either. If there is something you didn't  like, say it and give us some suggestions as to what would make it better.

Give us any wish list rides as well for 2014. What are your MUST ride locations and are there any new spots you would like to see in the calendar.

Your standard staple list of:

Morris
Chocco
Gluches day trip

Rent Gray Rock(cheap if you throw decent amount of rigs $1000) - GATR Fest - larger park

Harlen, KY

Further but different
Superlift
Rush Creek

Little bit more
AZ and NM wheeling

Grey Rock would be good, but I am unsure if the $1000 flat rate is actual.  It might be that the $1K covers the first 'x' rigs and that there is an additional charge for more.  It would be good to contact the owner to get a firm price.  The ride I went on ended up costing $80 or $90 for the two days.  If the club wanted to rent the park  I think it would be good to collect the fee in advance to make sure we didn't have a lot of no-shows jacking up the price for everyone else.

The informal group I went with does a Spring ride there as well, so it might work to try to go the same weekend.

I thought that the 2013 ride schedule was very good despite all the rain we had.

I can't see many in this club paying $80-$100 for a ride fee. Factor in gas prices, food and other things most will bow out. Not that I don't want to do this, but each ride for me is a budgeted event, and that budget is tight  //;D//

im glad garfest is only 1 time a year, i cant afford to many of those.   :)   I tend to agree with Krawler on this.

I was there and it wasn't that much. Its something to look into and I don't think it based off numbers but a flat fee.

The more we can have commit up front the cheaper it could be. Just need 20 rigs to make it $50 for the weekend. Any more than that and it could be one of the cheaper parks.

Gray rock is $850 for 10 rigs. After the 10 it is $75 each above that. That is what it was the last time we rented the park.

Thanks.  Very doable.

Are there trails for all levels of rigs?

Yes. But most trails are more difficult. //letseat//

Kvom and Mortalis5509 can tell you they where there.

that comes out to $80 per rig if you have 20.  That's expensive.

On the high side but the price of admission. If we don't have enough (10) that will pay it we will need to go with the other group.

I can cover the $80 or $85 bucks.  Count me in, depending on the weekend.

I think it's like Moab and Harlan; only a certain number of members will want to pay that much for a ride.

All the rigs in the group I was with were locked on 35s or higher.  Plenty of stuff to do at that level,  but also plenty that are hard at that level and above.  And some things that are ridiculous.  Check out some youtube videos.

Hale mountain was a fun park with a ton of rocl. With that said I spent a lot of time on the bypass or multiple trys in my LJ on 35s and a locker.

Harlan price is cheap.......

I was thinking about the fuel cost to drive there and back plus 2-3 nights accommodations.  It's at least $400 for a long weekend.

For those who camp, the cost of any ride is the fuel to get there and back plus the park fee.

Its worth it when that covers camping, shower, toilet,  and covered areas. Owner comes out and bs with you as well. There is a lot of traction and a range of trails. Spread out some traffic jams aren't really an issue.

Also second hale. Has a range of stuff but some nasty stuff. Watch xj on 37 climb some good stuff in there.

If that $80 covers camping and stuff also it wouldn't be tooooo bad....

If we are comparing parks, I would prefer to compare the total cost of the trip, and note the value a park represents, versus just comparing the cost paid to the park for riding on their trails.

I talked to Tim Kirk about Grey Rock again today.  The group I went with does two rides there a year, and the Spring ride will be March or April.  Getting "invited" seems to be a matter of someone on the list inviting you to join in, and after a couple of times you can get added to the list directly.  Maybe bjeep can comment on this.  One of the guys pays the fee in advance for the group and then collects on-site.  We can ask if having some GATR rigs participate next Spring, but since the date is apparently chosen only a couple of weeks in advance it would be hard to schedule on the calendar.

Tim says there is a lot of trails for stock Jeeps, but the issue would be finding them for people who don't know the park.  None of the regulars with built rigs is likely to volunteer to lead an easy ride.  I'm not sure how to address that.  Those with F&R lockers and 35+ tires could hang with the regular group.

I also got a clarification on the costs.  $1000 up-front to rent for up to 10 rigs at $850 + $150 refundable deposit.  More than 10 rigs it's a flat $85/rig, no charge for passengers or camping.

During the GATR fest scavenger hunt it would be neat to have a golden egg (or whatever you want to call it) that was an instant winner prize of some sort.  Obviously it would need to be hidden better than the other regular point based items.

Good idea but there would be need to be more than one based on the trail difficulty. A small guy shouldn't have to go look on a buggy trail for one and the other way around.

The guy who bought my toyo tires lives close to Hawks Pride.  He said he'd guide me around (buggy trails) if I ever got over there.  Might be willing to lead a group if we schedule.

I agree. It's 4 hours for me, but wasn't that bad. There are two camping areas. Different trails for different folks so there is a lot available at the park. I am one of the few that would tow so diesel cost would be higher for me, but worth the cost when making a weekend of it.

Dang, that one sounds fun too.  With a couple of weeks lead time I can go to just about any of these places if anyone is interested in going on non-gatr weekends.   I can't go where buggies go, but I'm willing to try most single black trails.

If that is what 39 at Windrock was...then you are correct...That was a damn blast.  Of course, I never did try that route you took...next time I will.

Yeah 39 was for sure a double black. But Windrock did seem to be a little overrated on their trails.
