So I'd like to get my wife something so that she can do more than just ride along in my Jeep. Right now, we have narrowed it down to two choices:
1995 Range Rover Classic- loads of custom fab, straight panels, new paint, beadlocks, 35's. I have a feeling the axles would need to be built up to make sure they don't grenade.
2000 Taco Truggy- d60 kingpin front, 14 bolt rear, lockers, gears, exo, straight panels, good paint.
I like the Taco since she could wheel it without worrying too much, but she likes the Rangie since it is so different and is inherently cool for mixing "luxury" with great offroad capability. I just worry about the axles. Let us know y'all's thoughts.

I'd choose the yota

Not even close. Yota from those choices.
If she were going to drive it to the mall or work everyday I see her point but for a trail rig those profits will not serve get well.
Where you going to find parts for that rover when you have a trail failure? Big city dealer...if he doesn't have to fly them in. They are also an electronics nightmare.
I'm a Jeep guy so my choices would be
LJ
2 door JK
Tj

Yoga at of those two. Jeep would be best choice. The guy that owns the Toyota lives down by lake Allatoona
-
Yeah, I've been messaging him back and forth. I agree on the spare parts argument. We already have the Jeep, so we are looking for something different.
-
Something similar means common parts.
Danny had a Toyota buggy for sale. Not sure if he still has it.

Yota out of those two.

I'd vote Yota for the trail, but that being said, that has got to be the most badass range Rover I've ever seen!
-
I like that range rover, but I'd go with a Toy.
-
Toyo for sure, that thing has the bones to take a beating and keep on wheeling //SLAMIN//
-
Toy hands down. The rang rover would have some sheet metal damage quick. You won't hurt the toy axles.

Toy.

IF you have the means to tow the yota around go that route if you have to drive your rigs to the trail get the other.

Good damn point!

Yota all the way.

If you get the Toyota, which would be a beast to drive on the highway, go ahead and get a trailer. If you're getting a trailer, go ahead and get one that can haul the Toyota and your Jeep. If you are doing that, go ahead and get a big ass heavy duty pickup to haul the trailer.
Help my memory...is Bane your first offroad vehicle (not including any 4 wheelers, SxS, or dirt bikes)? Does your wife have any experience with this hobby (eh hem...sport)?

What engine, transmission and transfer case is the Toyota running? A lot of them came with a manual, the 22r/re is a damn good engine, and easy for a propane swap. If it has the dual cases transfer case it will have a super slow crawl ration but unless they did some MAJOR work it will still rock a manual
-
It's a 2.7L 5 speed manual. Marlin crawler case with low and double low. Pretty much the only only thing I would change is to pull out the rear spool and put in a Yukon Grizzly so I could street it better. It already has Warn Premium hubs with lockout so I'm not worried about the welded front.

That's a good engine to have. Can't tell from the pics what side the front diff I'd on, my guess is it's running a toy crawl box in front of the stock taco chain drive case. The chain drive is not as desirable as the older gear driven cases but still a decent case.
If you want to talk anymore toyota specifics let met know.

Once I swap out the spool rear for a Yukon unit and balance out the tires really well with airsoft pellets, what's keeping this rig from being decently streetable? I mean as streetable as you get with 40's.
-
Brake lights work? My advice for what little its worth, don't buy on off road rig to make it road worthy. If you want that buy the LC or get a Wrangler. The 40s will bring the suck esp with that engine. I ran 39 stickies with the 4cylinder 22re and 4.88 in the diffs and the one time I ran on the street it sucked to keep up

Streetable at 30 mph or 60+? How do you mean?
It's hard to have a hard core trail rig that is hwy worthy for long trips. Not impossible but takes more effort.
You need to drive it to see if it has road manners. A lot of rigs I looked at awhile back were trail rigs and they worked well off road but every joint was sloppy and worn out and they wouldn't hold a lane on the road and bounced all over.
Which tires are those? Swampers? Not sure but some like those are not known for being nice and round for the road above 40, and hard. Light rig.
What gears are in it? Will that motor push it to highway speeds ok? What will rpms be at speed? Those are heavy tires.
So a road test will tell you what you have.

I don't see how you could go wrong with either of these.
If it were my wife though (and if my wife liked trail riding), she would prefer the smaller Toyota because it would be easier for her to navigate the trails with.
-
If you don't get the Toyota, please point me in the direction of where I could look into getting it.

Will do. I'm 90% sure it's the one I'm going with, but I'll let you know if something changes.
-
If it doesn't have a current tag and emissions plus a clean title, I'd stay away from getting it for possible street use.
-
It has a clean title and current tag. All electrics work. Still on leafs. Kingpins recently replaced, heims recently replaced on tie rod. Previous owner used to drive it to the trails and back. No trailering. Although that would be ideal, I just don't have the tow setup right now.
-
I would go with a tow rig and trailer first. But that is just my opinion. That way she can ride and drive your rig before she gets one, to make sure she likes it. Plus then your not diving yours everywhere.

Yeah, I hear ya on the tow rig, but I'm going to see how she does with it. Plus I don't want her learning a manual on my Jeep : ) She really wanted it so that her dad could come out with us and give them something to do together. He has been out with us before and loved it, so we will get the whole family involved.
It looks like I'll pick it up this Sunday.
-
Awesome. Ready to see it on the trails then.

So what's the axle gears in the 60 and 14 bolt? The lower the better with the engine so it can rev.

Good for you, her, and your father-in-law! I look forward to seeing this beast and your beast in the rocks (well, towering over them).
-
Yeah I really hope I'll be able to make it out this weekend in the Jeep. It is going to be really close.

Did you pick up the pick-up/buggy on Sunday? if so, Pics, Pics, Pics!!!
