Title: Need a metal pin turned down? Lathe?
Post by: BigMike on January 27, 2014, 12:31:01 PM
I absolutely LOVE my ACE Pro Series rear bumper.  The workmanship and quality is top notch.  BUT, one of the d-ring shackles wasn't drilled big enough for the d-ring pin.

My choices:
Drill out the hole
Have the d-ring pin cut down 1/16"

Thoughts?

What size is the hole?

They make different size d rings

If you turn down the d-ring pin then your  taking away from the strength. You need to drill the hole out to at least 15/16" The od of the pin on a 3/4" D-ring should be 7/8". You should call ACE and tell them about the problem and they should mail you out a drill bit.

I doubt they will send you a bit lol... I would drill out the hole in the bumper. If you do the d ring then you can only use that one

Still, I would highly doubt they're going to up and send you a bit. They're probably laser-ed out tabs anyway. Is there enough room on the bumper to get a good drill in there with a bit?

There is enough room to drill it.  I have a 1/2" drill so I'd only need to get the bit.  Then I'll have to find a coating that is as strong as powdering coating to keep it from rusting.  Maybe POR15.

I have a 7/8...I needed it once and it's a good one.  Let me know if it will work

I'd just get new, and smaller, d rings.  The hassle isn't worth it, to me.

You're right.  They sell them in 5/8".  7000# instead of 10,000#
