I am trying to buy a 2006-2008 Honda Civic to drive back and forth to work. I have called a around to a few dealers most are not american for this price range of cars. I am paying cash of it. I was always under the impression than when you buy from a dealer, they would collect money for the new title tax and tag fee and send that stuff and my title off to my county. it would then be mailed to me. When I called one of the dealers, they told me that I could pay my own tax and tag fee after I bought the car. Is this something that can be done? I have never had to deal with these type dealers before. If they would sign the title over to me and give it to me i would rather just do that myself than trust them to get it right.

Yea, if they have the title there and willing to do that, then that would be better and faster in my experience. Take the title down to the tag office and pay your own tax and tag fee.

This link explians that there is no sales tax on car sales in Georgia purchased after March 2013. You should have to pay an ad valorem tax to the dealer and then only like $20 at the Tag office for plates. I believe the only time you are supposed to be able to pay the ad valorem at the Tag office when you get tags is when you are buying from a private seller....
Hope that helps.

I paid the ad valorem fee and tag on both vehicles I've gotten since the new law at the tag office. One was from a dealer. I got the title for both at time of sale.

The one that you used to do is add that into finance if it was a large amount (40,000 car would be 2,800 tax) what do they do now?

If you are financing the vehicle, the dealer can roll the tax account into the loan and pay the tax for you.
