Title: GoPro battery charge
Post by: mudauber on August 12, 2014, 04:18:23 PM
Anyone with a GoPro try charging the battery with the USB ports on the radio or in the console while filming?

From an electrical point of view I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Unless it had an internal interlock.  //???//
Curious now.
Gotta go try

Maybe Check the amp rating coming out of the port.  Do go pros require the 2.1a charge rate?

How would you check the current flow coming out of the USB port? I'm curious because I don't know.

Thanks Tony.  Which port did you use....seems like I read somewhere that the port on the radio did not charge an IPOD but the one in the console would.  I have the battery pack but would like to leave the viewfinder attached so I could see what I was filming.  Also I would like to use the Wi-Fi remote to control the camera (those little tiny buttons are hard to find with the camera hanging upside down on the windshield).  Both are battery intensive.  I checked and have a USB extension cord (the supplied one will reach the radio) that will reach the console.  Maybe this afternoon I too will check to see if it charges.

I bought this so I don't have to worry about having charge on the trail. Worked perfect for Moab last year.

I have used the USB on my stereo to charge the GoPro.  I have the GoPro 3 but use the backpack LCD veiwfinder from my old GoPro 2.  It works but I can't charge it for some reason when the viewfinder is attached so when I charge I have to take it off, no big deal really.

I use the iphone wifi remote app.  Works great, you can turn the GoPro off and on,start and stop the recording and see what you are filming all from inside the vehicle.

If you are asking if I have charged the GoPro while filming, no,have not done that.

No problem with charging the batteries.  What I want to try is with the viewfinder attached (can't use battery pack) and Wi-Fi enabled (you have to have Wi-Fi enabled to use a tablet), be able to film for the length of the memory card without having to change batteries.  Seems like when things get "interesting" on the trail is when the battery goes dead.

i know they make a different case that allows you to charge while filming, not sure if it works with the lcd though, why do you need the lcd if you will view on wifi?

The answer is........both USB's charge the battery, however, I tried filming with a weak battery while charging and it would not work.  I scoured the instructions and waayyyy in the back it states "for charging and filming at the same time you need to use a wall charger or car charger".....looks like another $29 to GoPro for a cigarette lighter power plug.
