I had this mason jar for a while and moved it from the fridge to the freeze. I just noticed the freaking thing is almost frozen. I remember asking the proof and they said 150. Maybe 150% water. If I knew the guy I would be asking for my money back. I'm pissed.

I bought some pink stuff but haven't tried it yet. He said it was 120 proof. I was skeptical.

These days you can get so much good flavored, regulated alcohol, there is no reason to buy from the back of a truck.

That's the problem with bootleg whiskey. No regulation.
-
It's not really even alcohol, really. I doubt it's 30%. I like the real stuff and have had some.

Harlan ftw

Me too. All he did was run his mouth.
My shine guy is in Harlan County Kentucky and has never let me down in 4 years.

Have you ever proofed it? Normally you need the starting gravity and final gravity, but there may be other ways to determine the level of alcohol.
A quick search of the internet didn't yield a result besides the shake method. I would think there would be a way based on freezer temperature, but IDK.
Check out the Turbo 500 if you want to make your own. Be aware the Turbo 500 is small enough to be moved from one house to another if you work out a sharing agreement. Let me know if you get one, I have some old homebrew that I'd like to distill. I'll split the product with you.

I have never proofed it.
The reason Mike's shine is so good is that it is smooth and drinkable. It's not that "I'm a badass, I make shine at 150 proof" crap. It is almost always around 90 proof, sometimes up to 100 but that's a max. Based on my years of experience, I agree with what he tells me.

Tony, hook a brother up!
I'm building a still in January. If anyone can help with a mash recipe let me know.
The still will triple distill the ethanol.

I would probably target using cheap US 2 row barley, add in some sugar, and champagne yeast to handle the higher gravity.
I have a software application that can tell you what the target alcohol % will be based on ingredients. It is used for beer brewing, but the logic is the same, you're just getting about 20% of the output. There are some free applications out there, but I really like BeerSmith, especially for beer brewing. It's probably overkill for distillation.

Simple distalation is the process. Constant temperature, and then cooling off the steam to turn back into liquid.

Make the Harlan trip, it's a killer trip for many reasons and the rocks are just one of them!

I have friend here in town who has been making his own wine and shine for about 5 years now. He gets closer to the taste of the apple pie from Harlan every time he makes a batch but he still not matched it yet. Sure is fun sampling the batches.

start a thread on this. I have brewed beer in the past and am getting back into it but have never distilled liquor and am interested.
It is legal to do it on your own property as long as you don't sell it right?

Just beer and wine under certain gallon limits per year, correct?
Bummer.

Correct, but those vary by state. Georgia is fairly liberal as long as you do not transport it. Georgia, unless they have changed it, is at 100 gallons of beer per person in a house as long as they are 21 or older. They may have gone to 200 or 250. My memory is failing me. Good luck proving what people brew.

knew it wasn't shit. Spit some on the fire and it put it out. Should have been an impressive fire show.

Im reading the message here is that the more enjoyable shine is not the pure high alcohol stuff, but the smooth well flavored blended and cut stuff is much more desirable
-
what "color" did ya'll have?
The pink did exactly what it was suppose to do for us.
If you want something you can run the lawn mower off of ill trade you.
-
I want pure white lightening. I got that apple stuff which isn't close.

For me, yes. That stuff that you can see the fumes rising when you open the can is just nasty.
